DJ RP and labelmate singing duo Que have been locking the place with the hit tune ‘Walk Away’, that has the young ladies going crazy. Both the single and the music video have been getting heavy rotation, cementing Que and RP as two acts poised to take over the biz. Signed to the S-Lock Entertainment label, the young DJ RP declared this is just the beginning. He is about to make his mark with such a massive impact the world will be forced to stand still and take notice.

To his credit he has the singles ‘Ghetto Youth Time’ on the Main Source label, ‘Leprican’ and ‘Brukwild’ on the Shocking Vibes label, ‘Don’t Stop’ produced by Skatta Burrell, ‘Time Will Tell’ on the One Bullet riddim for the Subconscious label, and now ‘Walk Away’ featuring Que on the S-Lock Entertainment label. The vibesy DJ has also just released ‘Lyrically Incline’ on the Robbie Tuff label and ‘In These Streets’ for S-Lock. RP shot his first music video for ‘Ghetto Youth Time’, which got some rotation on the local channels islandwide and created a buzz in the streets. He later shot the videos for ‘Leprican’ and ‘Brukwild’, which also received good airplay locally. Followed by the video for ‘Walk Away’ featuring Que, directed by Simeon Hedge and shot by Asha. The video for ‘Lyrically Incline’ is expected to drop soon. With some seven years of experience in the music industry, RP has achieved a great deal of street and media credit and is fully prepared for the music industry with no room for mistakes. Look out for this fresh, new DJ. He’s ready to lock the biz. Teen Herald sat down for a One on One chat with the DJ.

Minister of Youth, Sports & Culture, the Honourable Olivia Grange, MP, handed over 22 computers and other equipment to the leadership of the National

Secondary Students’ Council on Thursday, March 4. The equipment, which included Laserjet printers, multifunctional fax machines, UPS, line conditioners and printer ink cartridges, was sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) which has been assisting the Ministry’s youth development strategy, through the National Centre for Youth Development (NCYD). The equipment will serve 15 schools. Minister Grange said she “expected the NSSC to use the equipment well in the furtherance of the work of the organisation.” On April 17, 2008, KOICA and the Government of Jamaica signed an agreement described as the “Records of Discussion” with the objective of encouraging youth participation in sound social activities. Another of the objectives is the empowerment of student leaders in the National Secondary Students’ Council. Director of the NCYD, Mrs. Roberta Brown-Ellis, said she was “glad that the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture and KOICA were able to help the NSSC in building its ICT capacity.” President of the NSSC, Andre Stephens, thanked Minister Grange and KOICA for the equipment and said it would be put to full use in the work of the NSSC. The NSSC is the highest body advocating for student affairs at the secondary level. The NSSC receives technical and financial support from the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture through the NCYD.

The 1,000 female students attending the Mandeville Primary and Junior High School, Manchester, were on Wednesday (February 3) exposed to several motivational talks, and entertained by a fashion parade and a netball match against teachers, as the school

celebrated Girls’ Day. Held under the theme ‘Good Girls, Great Women’, the day of fun-filled activities saw the students engaging in all that was delivered to them, including defeating the teachers in the netball match. Representative of the Parents Teachers’ Association (PTA), Vivia Ford, noted that part of being great is practicing kindness in everyday life. “Great women are kind: They plant seeds that help others to strive. They do not allow the negatives to overshadow their joy, and the joy they offer to others. They strive to do the right thing, because that is the core of who they are, (and) they recognize room for growth and take responsibility for their mistakes,” she told the youngsters. Principal of the school, Byron Farquharson, said that they have celebrated Boys’ Day, as it was felt that they needed the attention. But, they have now moved to give the girls similar recognition. “We want to start them right, give them the core values, allow them to set their sails high, make the right choices and ultimately become great women,” the Principal said. One of three guidance counselors at the institution, Jennifer Hall, said that the day became necessary, as there is a need to speak to some of the issues concerning girls, including self-esteem building and identity. “And so, we came up with the theme to invest in our girls and lift them, motivate and talk with them about their morals. That will help them to be great women,” she argued. For, at least, one parent, Vivia Johnson, Girls’ Day was important, “because it helps the girls to identify women who are successful, and take them as role models, to inspire them as they grow.” She said it was a good initiative, and the children will benefit from the experience.

We want to look at the way two variables change together in an experiment. In direct variation or direct proportionality, one variable increases as the other increases or decreases as the other decreases. In inverse variation or inverse proportionality, one variable increases as the other decreases or decreases as the other increases. If x is directly proportional to y , then we write yx α where α (alpha) is the proportionality symbol. We can then introduce the constant of proportionality K , hence we form the equation

Kyx = . Similarly If x is inversely proportional to y , then we write

Since 2004 the e-Learning Project, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry with responsibility for the Telecommunications Portfolio (currently the Office of the Prime Minister),

has been impacting on the quality of education in Jamaica’s high school system through the use of Information Technology. To date, 7,090 teachers have received certification in ICT Skills in the programme. The programme is an extraordinary one directed at keeping the local educational system in pace with those schools in the first world. By utilizing Information Technology and Internet based communication tools, teachers are being trained to deliver a more exciting and interactive approach to learning that the students understand. On Friday, March 5, the latest batch of 580 teachers graduated with certification in basic Information and Communications Technology skills, at the Manchester High School, Mandeville. The group consisted of teachers from 12 high schools in Manchester and Troy High School in Trelawny. The teachers gain competences in operating a personal computer, word processing, spread sheeting, database management, accessing the internet, making power-point presentations which provides them with the basic skills to integrate the technology into their lesson plans and project assignments and deliver lessons utilising the technology.

The e-Learning project is providing technology-based materials to teachers and students, and is therefore providing computer and audiovisual equipment as well as data networks to the schools, so that teachers and students are able to access and utilize these materials. According to Adelle Brown, Training Consultant at e-Learning Jamaica Company Limited, “the project has been an exciting teaching and learning experience.” “Initially the response was lukewarm. However, momentum gathered shortly after the training commenced and now the teachers are very responsive,” Mrs. Brown said. “The students also are very happy that their teachers are now further equipped to deliver, using ICT.” There are five components in the project designed to address each of the following objectives: Development of ICT-based Instructional Materials in 11 subject areas, Provision of Equipment/Technologies, Training of Teachers, Remedial Interventions, and a Continuous Assessment component. There are currently 3,384 teachers in training. The project is a far reaching one aiming to train approximately 11,400 teachers and impact some 260,000 students.

Over 7,000 teachers given NVQ-J Level 1 certification in Information &

Communication Technology

It is said that “a good education is the key to success” and, as such most, if not all able bodied persons always strive for the best in educational opportunities for themselves and

their children, with a view to realizing social, economic and other improvements in their lives. Whereas for persons with all their physical faculties intact, achieving a good educational training can be easy for some, and not so easy for others based on their learning abilities. One can imagine the degree of difficulty there is for persons not so fortunate to have all their physical faculties intact, to achieve a good educational start in life. In such cases, special attention, care and tutoring, which calls for great patience, skill and professionalism, are necessary to assist those unfortunate ones with their disabilities. This is where the work of the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf, located in the tough inner-city community of Granville, St. James, becomes important, as it caters only to youngsters with hearing disabilities, trying to prepare them for life in general, and how to become independent, productive individuals. With approximately 164 public educational institutions in the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) region 1V, which takes in the parishes of St. James, Hanover and Westmoreland, the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf (CCCD) holds the distinction of being the only MOE recognized institution of its kind in the parish of St. James. It started operating in 1990, receiving its first student in 1994 and, based on its recognized independent school status by the MOE, it receives a stipend from that ministry as a form of financial support and constant monitoring and supervision from an assigned Education Officer. The Granville institution is one of three such institutions catering solely to deaf persons, being operated by the Caribbean Christian Centre, a non-government organization. The others are in Kingston and Knockpatrick, Manchester.

Do you classify persons who wear glasses as nerds and why ?

BETYUHNEVAKNOWSEH?

Alex, 18 – NCU No, I think it’s a stigma attached to wearing glasses, even though that stigma is not unfounded. The reason someone wears glasses is because of the fact that something is wrong with that person’s eyes, not because he/she is a nerd.

Sarah, 15 No. Because I wear them! Occasionally but yeah, I think it enhances some people and then again, others just need them and they all can’t be as good looking as others. Isn’t a nerd like an OCD study freak?

Shevaughn, 18 – Excelsior Community College I do not believe that wearing glasses makes someone a nerd; because glasses are recommended by doctors or medical advisors, for better eyesight or 20/20 vision. There are different styles of eyeglass wears that might alter the person’s appearance and this makes the person look nerdy.

Michael, 18 Well, a Jamaican nerd is a person in the school without any form of importance to his/her peer and they don’t really care about dressing or any form of fashion or an outdated wardrobe. Then you have wanna-bes, the funniest gallists, pretty boy gangsters, etc. but nowadays glasses don’t mean you’re a nerd. With the right glasses it can look “mad” cool.

Overview of a PhysicistPhysicists study the natural world, from the tiniest subatomic particles to the largest galaxies. They do experiments to discover the laws of nature. They study what things are made of (matter) and how things behave. They also study energy. They learn how it changes from one form to another. Some physicists focus on theories. They ask big questions. They might ask what causes gravity, for example, or what the shape and size of the universe is. Then, they use observation and mathematics to find the answers. Many of them do experiments. Some, for example, propel atoms into each other in an accelerator to break them apart. They look for clues about what particles come out of atoms when they split. Other physicists apply theories to practical problems. They might create advanced materials, new electronic and optical devices, or medical equipment. They also design research equipment. Some of this equipment is used in surprising ways. For example, the first laser was created for research, but people later discovered that lasers could be used in surgery as well. Most physicists work in research and development. Some do basic research to increase knowledge. Others do applied research. They take what is learned in basic research and use it to create new

devices, products, and processes. Astronomy is sometimes considered a part of physics. Astronomers study the stars, planets, and other parts of the cosmos.Physicists often work regular hours in labs and offices. At times, they may work long or irregular hours doing research. They may travel to use special equipment in other places.

How do you prepare yourself?

You usually need a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) to work as a physicist. A doctoral degree takes several years of college to complete. People who want permanent jobs in basic research at universities and government

labs need even more training. Many Ph.D. holders teach at colleges or universities. People with a master’s degree in physics often get jobs in manufacturing and applied research and development. Some teach in high schools or at community colleges. Those with a bachelor’s degree often work as technicians or research assistants. Some may be able to work in applied research jobs in private industry or in non-research positions in the government. Some become science teachers in junior high schools or secondary schools. If you want to be a physicist, you should study math and science. You must be good at solving problems. And you should be curious. Physicists are self-starters. Speaking and writing abilities are also important.

Sometimes, physicists have to write research papers or proposals. And some physicists share ideas while working in a team.

The limited amount of money to do research means that physicists will have to compete for basic research jobs. But there will continue to be demand for people with physics knowledge to work with computers and in other applied sciences.

Reading is the most important thing a child can do. Yet

so many parents don’t seem to realize this. Children today have so many distractions - TV, internet, computer games, sports - that they think they don’t have time to read and, quite frankly, they often find reading boring compared to these other things. But, if you can teach a child to enjoy books, that child has a companion for life and will always have the knowledge he or she needs to be successful in everything they do.

Why is reading really so important?Words are our everyday tools. You use words in everything. You

speak thousands of words every day. Most people write something every day. A letter, a resume, an article, a note, even two lines on a post-it - they all require words. If you read, words will come easier to you simply because of the vocabulary you will have. People who read are known to have larger vocabularies and usually find it much easier to compose a written piece or give a speech.

VocabularyMany of today’s teenagers think vocabulary isn’t important. ‘Cool’, ‘hot’, ‘fierce’, ‘rad’ - they think this vocabulary is all they need. Try interviewing for a job that pays more than a supermarket

checkout position, and see how far using ‘fierce’ will get you. What you say puts a vision in the other person’s mind of who you are. If you can express yourself eloquently, the person hearing you has already decided you are intelligent. In most situations in life, intelligence will get you where you want to go. Sounding intelligent helps you on your path to that goal.

InformationReading gives you information. Everything you will ever need to know is available in a book somewhere. It’s available on the internet, or in a newspaper. If you love reading, you will find that

getting information is easy for you. In any job, if you know how to find the information you need, you are miles ahead of your competition. Remember the old adage “Knowledge is power”? The people who are often the most successful have knowledge, and other people pay them for that knowledge. Reading will give you any knowledge you could ever need for any situation.

ImaginationReading feeds your imagination.

InspirationBooks have the tools and the power to inspire.

Teach children to read and instill in them a love of books and of reading and they will never be bored, never be lonely and never be lost for words. Children’s reading abilities will keep them involved, inspired and informed. Everything they do from their first work in basic to their career as a doctor, teacher or author will all stem from the knowledge they have learned from books. Reading is the most important thing a child can ever learn, because even when they are alone, they can still learn, still be amused and still dream. Reading really will be the lifeblood of everything they do and everything they accomplish.

There are some common hair problems that affect everyone’s hair from time to time. Here are tips to help teens deal with some of

them:

Preventing Split Ends Half of the cure for split ends is prevention. Don’t brush your hair too much, and be sure to use brushes and combs with smooth, wide-set teeth; avoid nylon bristles. And no matter what, don’t brush wet hair! If you have knots, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to gently detangle from the ends up, one section at a time. Of course, a trim will rid you of split ends instantly. In the meantime, a split-end treatment, a leave-in conditioner with light hold or a pomade applied to the ends can temporarily seal the splits.

Dandruff

Dandruff – or flakes of dead skin – can be noticeable in a person’s hair and on clothing. No one really knows what causes dandruff, although recent studies seem to show that it may be caused by a type of fungus. Dandruff isn’t contagious or dangerous. Over-the-counter shampoos containing salicylic acid, zinc, tars, or selenium sulfide can reduce dandruff flakes. When shampooing, massage your scalp (but don’t scratch) for at least five minutes, loosening the flakes with your fingers. Rinse your hair well after washing. If your dandruff doesn’t improve, see your doctor. He or she may prescribe a prescription shampoo and possibly a lotion or liquid to rub into your scalp.

Hair Breakage

Hair can break when points in the hair thicken or weaken. Sometimes this happens near the scalp so a person’s hair never grows very long. When hairs break at the ends, they’re called “split ends”, and the splits can travel up the hair shaft. A major cause of hair breakage is improper use of chemical hair treatments, like the treatments described above. But brushing or combing hair too frequently or in the wrong way (such as using a fine-toothed comb on very thick, curly hair or teasing hair) can lead to breakage. Hair extensions and braids can also cause breakage. Leaving them in too long or pulling them out without professional help can cause hair and scalp damage or even hair loss. Sometimes hair breakage and dry, brittle hair are signs of a medical problem, such as hypothyroidism or an eating disorder. If your hair is breaking even though you don’t treat it with chemicals or other styling products, see a doctor. As with the rest of our bodies, hair is healthiest when we eat right, exercise, and protect it from too much sun.

Rapper Lil Wayne has begun a year

long prison term after a string of delays postponed his sentencing for weapons possession, stemming from a 2007 arrest. The ‘Lollipop’ hitmaker, real name Dwayne Carter, pleaded guilty last year to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, and admitted having a

loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun on his tour bus. He was initially expected to be sentenced to a year behind bars last month, but he was granted a postponement to undergo dental surgery. The hearing was delayed again on March 2, after a blaze in the basement of the courthouse forced officials to evacuate the building and close it down for the rest of the day. The rapper was finally sentenced at Manhattan Criminal Court last Monday, and taken away in handcuffs to begin his term at an undisclosed city jail immediately. According to the Associated Press, the Grammy winner’s lawyer plans to ask for protective custody out of concern for Wayne’s safety and health following his dental surgeries. He could be released in about eight months with good behaviour.

Justin Timberlake making a movie with ex-girlfriend

Cameron Diaz is “thrilled” her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake has been cast as her love interest in the new movie ‘Bad Teacher’ – because his on-set antics

are keeping her entertained. The ‘Charlie’s Angels’ actress stars as a junior high school teacher who sets out to steal a colleague’s boyfriend, played by Timberlake, in the comedy. Diaz dated the pop singer for almost four years until they split in 2007, and Timberlake has since found love with actress Jessica Biel. But ‘The Holiday’ star is excited to work alongside her former beau in the film, which also stars Molly Shannon and Jason Segel. She tells Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush, “We’re thrilled to have him. He’s the best person for the job. He’s going to be hilarious. He’s clearly a very talented comedian, look at his Saturday Night Live (skits). He’s fantastic, he’s going to be so great. “We just had our first day of shooting yesterday with Jason. And we just laughed all day. It’s so wonderful, I’m so excited.”

Mariah Carey has sparked rumours she is pregnant with her

first child. The 39-year-old star - who played a social worker in the Oscar-winning movie ‘Precious’ - revealed at the Independent Spirit Awards she plans to do more acting, but has “something special on the way” first.

According to the New York Post, Mariah teased: “I have a lot of new acting projects coming up, I’m talking to [‘Precious’ director Lee Daniels] about three movies, but there’s also something special on the way – I can’t say anymore.” The singer and actress looked radiant in a blue Valentino gown at the Oscars, which she attended with 29-year-old husband Nick Cannon. Nick said last month: “We absolutely plan to have a family. But we gotta prioritize, because that’s a major, major priority. “That’s like the only priority in life, when you think about it, is starting and raising a family. We want to make sure everything is out of the way and that we don’t have any distractions. “She’s on tour right now, I’m doing a bunch of stuff, so eventually we want to be able to say it’s time to have a kid, and set everything up. But we’re definitely moving toward [it]. We got our house in LA, and we got a house [in New York City], established and close to schools. So we take all of that stuff into consideration.”

Quirky, thick “nerd” glasses have become the new Hollywood it. Chris Brown has even gone as far as putting tape to the middle of his frames. I mean seriously? Who would’ve thought that those signature Urkel glasses would have made it on the cool side of life? Interestingly enough, this widespread epidemic has even embedded itself right here in Jamaica. It’s not only tight pants that are rocking it now, but tight pants and thick chunky glasses. Nerd is apparently the new cool. I mean, who would’ve guessed? Where some legitimate geeks may have a huge problem with entertainers copying their look, they need not worry for long. I have a strong feeling that like most trends, the geek look is fleeting. However, in the meantime if you want to make a serious style statement you can always get a pair at any hip accessory store or to make life easier, you can just easily borrow a pair from your grandfather and rock it!

A lot of teens suffer from low self-worth, whether it is because of school, ‘friends’ or experiences. It is becoming really common in schools now-a-days.

Recently, I read a letter in ‘Hi Trish’ where a girl was said to be teased because of her weight, and another girl was writing the letter on her behalf. It really touched my heart when I read it, I almost cried, I really felt bad for the girl. In situations like those it can lead to all kinds of symptoms, including low self-esteem. No one should be teased about their appearance, because none of us are perfect and it should be an individual’s choice to find their imperfections and try to correct it if necessary. According to the Bible, “We must take the beam out of our eyes before we look at the one in our brother’s eye.” Remember, you don’t have to malign someone else to feel good about yourself.

Hot Wheels: 2003 Dodge TomahawkBy Ravion Creary

T he 2003 Dodge Tomahawk Concept is a high performance four-wheel motorcycle with a mid engine.

It was first displayed at the North American International Auto Show in the year 2003 and it stands as a perfect example of Dodges skill in constructing a motorcycle. The Dodge Tomahawk is a single-seater vehicle with latest technology, huge body structure with stylish looks and delivers high performance and also one of the top speeds of about 300 mph. The Dodge Tomahawk features a powerful aluminum viper V-10 engine with a capacity of 8277 cc. The engine delivers an output power of 500 bhp at 5600 rpm and 525 lb-ft torque at 4200 rpm. It reaches the speed of 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and the top speed is about 300 mph. The Dodge Tomahawk features two speed sequential transmission and the gear shifts can be performed easily, even at a higher speed of 200 mph. The exteriors feature the stylish and muscular body structure of the motorcycle and it gives the best driving experience at high speeds.

Panasonic has not sat by and let others take up its mantle. It has introduced the upgraded G2. Both will go into battle equipped with a new, simplified 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 kit lens. Both models offer Panasonic’s new Intelligent Resolution

technology that attempts to smooth or sharpen different parts on the image in a context-sensitive way to optimize image quality. The more expensive G2 will look to win-over the mid-range crowd. It too can shoot 720p HD video but with the advantage of being able to record it in the more efficient AVCHD Lite format at either 60 or 50 frames per second (based on 30 or 25fps data coming from the sensor). The G2’s most radical credentials, though, stem from its touch-screen interface. Touch screen cameras aren’t a particularly new idea (it could be argued that they started appearing before the touch-sensitive technology or user interfaces were really ready), but this is the first interchangeable lens camera we’ve seen to add the feature. Crucially, the touch-screen options are in addition to, rather than in replacement of, traditional controls. The G2 features a touch-sensitive screen that can be used to select focus point, adjust camera settings and even fire the shutter. However, no conventional controls have been removed, so it can still be operated exactly like a G1. An oddly shaped stylus is provided but we found the pressure-sensitive screen responsive enough to not need it. On the button-front there’s been something of a cabinet reshuffle – all the key players are still around but now hold slightly different positions. The big gains are for AF-point selection mode, which gets added to the G2’s scaled-down retro-styled combination dial and switch, and the newly arrived movie mode, which has a direct start button. Intelligent Auto mode also gets its own button, having been displaced from the mode dial by Movie P mode. Q. Menu, exiled from the top plate, finds a new home on an additional button on the camera’s rear (just next to where the ‘Q. Menu’ virtual button appears on the touch screen). Film Mode, which also used to occupy the top of the camera, gets shunted to the four-way controller, nudging AF-point selection down to the Fn button. As a result, the only function to lose direct access is metering mode, which instead becomes one of the other options available for the Fn button (there’s a choice of ten, rather than the G1’s five).

New kit lens

Along with the G2, Panasonic has announced a new kit lens – a lighter, larger, less rangy 14-42mm F3.5-5.6. It loses its O.I.S image stabilization switch, passing control to the camera body. Despite the lens body being 5mm longer, a plastic mount and other materials changes have helped the 14-42mm shed 30g compared to the 14-45mm’s 192g. The optical design has changed, but the basic specification of 12 elements (one of them aspherical), in nine groups is retained. Panasonic says the performance should be to the same standard as its predecessor. We look forward to getting the chance to test these claims in our studio.
