The following information is required to properly specify and order iron pipe fittings for pressure. -Coatings -Configuration/Description -End connection -Material -Pressure Class -Size ANSI, ASTM and ASME are the most commonly recognized publishers of standard specifications for pressure pipe fittings. ANSI covers dimensions and tolerances, pressure & temperature ratings, markings and pressure testing. ASTM covers materials, including chemical analysis and mechanical properties. ASME has adopted the same standards and numerical designations as ANSI and ASTM. In some applications, UL and FM approvals may also be required. Please note that not all configurations are available in all end connections, materials, pressure classes or sizes. Please refer to the manufacturers catalog for information on commonly produced fittings.

Materials & Pressure Classes

Manufactures may vary in their designs and specifications. The following standards are the most common. Cast Iron (CI) – ASTM A126 Class 125 Class 250 Ductile Iron (DI) – ASTM A536 Class 150 Class 300 Malleable Iron (MI) – ASTM A197 Class 150 Class 300

End connections End connections have many terms that designate the same standard. The most widely recognized standard is NPT – American National Pipe Taper Thread (ANSI B1.20.1.) This is usually preceded with a F for female or a M for male (FNPT or MNPT.)

Sizes NPT sizes range from 1/16” thru 16”. For the sake of simplicity only commonly produced sizes are listed below. 1/8” 1/4” 3/8” 1/2” 3/4" 1” 1-1/4”

1-1/2” 2” 2-1/2” 3” 4” 5” 6” When writing descriptions for Reducing fittings the Larger size is always listed first. Per Industry standards Reducing Tee’s and Crosses are written as below. Run 1 2 3

1 2 2” x 1-1/2” x 1” Tee (2”) (1-1/2”)

The Branch is always listed last. Like all reducing fittings, the larger size Branch is listed first. 3 (1”) 3 (1”) 1 2 3 4 2” x 2” x 1” x 1” Cross 1 2 Like the Tee, the run sizes are first (2”) (2”) and the branch sizes are last. The larger sizes determine the run and are listed first.

4 (1”)

Coatings Any coating can be applied to iron fittings, but typically only two are available from the fitting manufacturers, black and galvanized. Black is a plain mill/casting finish. Galvanized is a zinc coating per ASTM A153.

Putting it all Together

Based on the data above, a complete description example would include the following. Size + Pressure Class + Coating + Material + End Connections + Description 1” class 150 ASTM A153 Galvanized ASTM A197 Malleable Iron FNPT x MNPT 90o Street Elbow per ANSI B1.20.1 & B16.3 The above example is a complete specification. However, there are many assumptions that can shorten this description for ordering.

1) All malleable iron fittings have NPT threads. 2) All 90o Street Elbows are FNPT x MNPT. 3) All reputable Malleable Iron fitting manufacturers comply with ASTM A197, ASTM

A153, ANSI B1.20.1 and B16.3. 4) 150 is only applicable to the pressure class 5) Common abbreviations can be used

We can shorten this description to: 1” 150 GMI 90 ST Hayward Pipe & Supply’s descriptions are accepted and understood by all reputable manufacturers. We created a simple matrix to create our part numbers and descriptions. Our part numbers are easy to decipher and when understood, could be used as descriptions on their own. Using the sample above our part number is TMG19SD F T MG 1 9S D F NPT Galv Mal Iron CL-150 90 St El Domestic Mfg Size Refer to the chart on the next page to build an iron pressure fitting part number.
