Why Thailand ?

Thailand is ranked 50th the biggest country in the world which accounts for 513,115

square kilometers, along with bordering to their neighbor countries namely Burma,

Laos, Cambodia, Andaman sea and Malaysia. The country itself is well-known as a

famous tourist destination and a natural resource country. Thailand's macro

economics have literally been driven and growth as a result of electronic

components and appliances. Particularly, the growing demand of LED backlighting of

electronic appliances.

Thailand's LED lighting market tends to be gradually rising as the income from the

market generated revenue of more than EUR 7 billion (USD 9.3 billion) in 2010. The

potential LED lighting products are categorized as follow; general lighting,

automotive lighting and backlighting sectors. More specific, the current potentiality

of LED lighting market can be obviously measured as it is accounted for USD 27

million or 12% of total lighting market share with expected tendency to increase up

to 45-50% by 2015. This can be said that LED lighting market seems to have a bright

future to grow in Thailand.

In terms of business opportunities, it is possibly foreseen that a number of booming

LED products and government massive projects will be using the products as

evidenced below:

1. LED Automotive lighting – number of cars with LED headlights would grow

from 1.5 million to 5 million from 2013-2015 with value of LED components

grow from USD 130 to 300 million (According to Dirk Banderhaeghen of Philips

Lumileds)

2. Government Project : The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) is preparing to

replace one million street lights nationwide with light-emitting diode (LED)

bulbs

3. Public & private infrastructure projects from construction of new parliament

house, stadium, residential, commercial , hospitality to entertainment

projects

Gateway to Asia Thailand enjoys a strategic location and serves as a gateway into the heart of Asia –

home to what is today the largest growing economic market. The country also offers

convenient trade with China, India and the countries of the Association of Southeast

Asian Nations (ASEAN), and easy access into the Greater Mekong sub-region, where

newly emerging markets offer great business potential. Thailand is ideally located at

the crossroads of Asia, with easy access to the region's dynamic markets, including its

own booming domestic consumer market of 67 million people. Thailand has long

been a proponent of free and fair trade and its attractiveness as a production base for

leading international companies is enhanced by a number of free trade agreements,

and Thailand is certain to be a beneficiary of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC),

which will enter into force in 2015. Thailand is a foreigner friendly and welcoming

Buddhist country. It offers World-class infrastructure.

Numerous government agencies support investors. Through the Board of Investment, the government offers a range of tax incentives, supporting services and import duty exemptions or reductions to an extensive list of promoted activities.

Thailand lighting market value was THB 7 billion in 2011, with an annual growth of 4% from the previous year. LED Lighting share was 12%, expected to grow up to 45-50% by 2015 owing to several government supportive policies which promote the use of energy efficient & eco friendly lighting technology. As GO GREEN is the motto of the world, Thai government is also working towards this goal to ensure energy saving and a greener world to live in by adopting green lighting technology like LED.

Ministry of Energy of Thailand plans to reduce energy consumption by 20% in 2030. However, EGAT has initiated the Demand Side Management (DSM) Program since 1993. This program was designed to promote the efficient use of electricity in Thailand with targets of reduction in the nation's energy consumption. One of DSM strategies focuses on promoting the use of high efficiency appliances in Thailand including lamps for lighting system. For almost 20 years of DSM implementation, EGAT successfully persuaded consumers to use various kinds of high efficiency lamps.

Growing economyThailand is ranked as the 10th most attractive host economy country in the world.

Foreign direct investment policies The country's well-defined investment policies focus on liberalization and encouragement free trade.

Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Energy. Its mission is to generate, acquire, transmit and sell electric energy as well as conducting electricity-related businesses and other businesses related to EGAT's activities.Electricity is vital to the country's development in all aspects. However, the continual increase in power generation to accommodate the fast-growing demand requires huge investment. This resulted in escalating power generation costs leading to the inevitably increasing of environmental impact.

Australia: Has implemented strict policies on importing and selling incandescent lights since 2008

Canada: Its government will forbid selling incandescents starting 2012

China: Will forbid selling and importing incandescents with luminous efficacies of 100W and higher, 60W and higher, 15W and

higher starting from end of 2012, end of 2014, and end of 2016 respectively

EU: Has started forbidding the use of 100W incandescent lights since 2009 and started forbidding the use of 65W since 2010, and

has forbidden selling 60W incandescent light bulbs since September 2011. It will forbid selling 40W and 25W from September

2012 onwards and only light bulbs with luminous efficacies higher than that of type D light bulbs are allowed to be sold in the EU.

EU also plans to fully replace incandescent light bulbs by 2015 and only light bulbs with luminous efficacies higher than that of

type B light bulb are allowed to be sold by 2016

India: Plans to replace 400 million incandescent light bulbs with energy saving lights by end of 2012

Ireland: Has forbidden selling incandescent lights with low luminous efficacies since 2009

Japan: Will strictly forbid the use of incandescent lights starting 2012

Korea: Will forbid the use of incandescent lights starting 2013

Malaysia: Will forbid manufacturing incandescent light bulbs with energy‐saving lights at end of 2014

Philippines: Has begun advocacy of forbidding incandescents in households and other infrastructures since 2010

Switzerland: Has forbidden selling type F & G light bulbs with low luminous efficacies included a few kinds of incandescent lights

since 2007

Thailand: Has been encouraging the replacement since 2007

UK: Has forbidden the use of incandescent lights since 2011

USA: United States' government will completely replace incandescent lights from 2012 to 2014
