Medical Teams International ➤ 2010 Accountability Report
Thank You for Being Part of Our Team
“I’m a dead man.” That’s what Alex said when he came to our HIV and AIDS center in Ogur, Uganda.
Alex was sick, weak and in trouble. He had lost his family. Then, he found out he was HIV-positive—a death sentence for many.
Our staff and volunteers befriended Alex. They showed him Christ’s love through their care and compassion. They helped him find the treatment he needed for his HIV. This love transformed Alex’s life.
Today, Alex is strong and happy. He has regained his health. He has hope for the future through his new faith in Christ. His spiritual transformation has reunited him with his wife and family.
This year, we touched the lives of 2.5 million people—many like Alex.
We could not have done this work without our dedicated volunteers and staff, without the incredible donations of medicines and supplies we shipped around the world, without our faithful local partners in the field, without God’s blessing on our efforts.
And, we could not have done this work without you.
Alex is alive today because you helped to support our work. I wish you could meet him. I know he would throw his arms around you and thank you for your compassion and help.
On behalf of Alex and millions of people like him, thank you for your support. I’m so grateful for your partnership with us in bringing hope to those whom Jesus called “the least of these” in our world today.
Thank you for being someone who cares,
Bas Vanderzalm President

T he January 12 earthquake in Haiti crushed Robertson’s leg. For nine days, Robertson’s father-in-law desperately searched for
help. Finally, he carried Robertson to our medical team at a Christian hospital that had survived the earthquake.
Our surgical volunteers operated on Robertson and saved his leg. While
Robertson was in surgery, his wife, Regine, went into labor.
With the help of a volunteer OB/GYN physician who walked into the hospital at that moment, our team was able to deliver a healthy baby girl for Robertson and Regine.
Within hours, Robertson, Regine and their new baby were reunited in a hospital room they shared with other patients.
Your support helped our volunteers save many lives like Robertson and Regine after the earthquake in Haiti. We could not have done this without your support and prayers.
Bringing open Hands of Healing and Hope, HaitiSince January 12, 2010, when a terrible earthquake destroyed large parts of Haiti, almost every day is the same for Dr. June Hanks.
Dr. Hanks is a member of our team in Haiti. She runs an orthopedic rehabilitation clinic in the city of Les Cayes. Each morning, when Dr. Hanks opens her clinic, she finds a line of amputees and disabled people waiting for her help.
Many of the people in line have lost arms and legs as a result of the earthquake. Some are young children, like Jodeline, a three-year-old whose legs were crushed and who lost every member of her family.
Seven months after the earthquake, Jodeline walks again, on a prosthetic leg developed by Dr. Hanks and her staff at the clinic.
Another child receiving help is Frenel, a 15-year-old-boy who was moved from hospital to hospital after the earthquake. Weeks later, out of money and his leg fully infected, Frenel’s leg had to be amputated to save his life.
Now, thanks to Dr. Hanks, Frenel walks again on a prosthetic leg. Dr. Hanks thinks Frenel will be able

With the help of many generous companies and medical organizations, we sent medicines and donated medical supplies valued at $189 million around the world this year. These supplies touched the lives of
more than 1.67 million people.
One of those who received help was Adil, an 84-year old man living in Kyrgyzstan.
Ethnic violence in his country forced Adil to flee for his life. His son carried his father in his arms to the safety of a refugee camp. Unfortunately, on the journey, Adil’s son was injured and hospitalized.
Adil was alone and desperately needed help in the camp. He had suffered a stroke and could not move without help.
With your help, we sent an emergency shipment of medicines to the camp—enough to care for 40,000 people for three months. This aid was a lifeline for Adil and thousands of others in the camp with him.
The medicines we sent restored Adil to health. We also found a wheelchair to help him move around the camp. “Thanks to this gift I can easily sit and now I can be transported easily,” he told our team.

An Orphan Thrives Despite Disease Two years ago, when João* was 11 years old,
both his parents died of AIDS within two months of each other. Their horrific deaths—
without any treatment—haunt João to this day.
João’s three older siblings abandoned him after their parents died. They needed to find work in nearby towns to survive.
One day, João’s uncle Angelo visited him and found him very sick. So, Angelo brought the young boy home with him. Soon, Angelo noticed that João struggled with basic chores—fetching water and gathering firewood.
It seemed that João would die from the same disease that killed his parents. Angelo took him to traditional healers. They could not help. João grew weaker.
Angelo had little hope left … until he heard about the Kuwangisana Project, our church-based health program in northern Mozambique.
Workers at the project tested João and learned he had HIV. They counseled João and his family. Angelo hugged João and told him he would get better.
Since that day, João receives antiretroviral therapy. He also receives treatment for infections and other medical issues at Kuwangisana’s community center.
With your help, João has regained his health. He’s now strong enough to attend school.
João also farms. “I love plants because I like to see things grow.” João touches a drooping plant and says, “I thought I was going to die just like this plant. But with tender loving care, this plant can grow and become healthy, just like I did.”*names have been changed

Natasha Crunican was a teen model, with a beautiful smile and a happy life.
Yet, Natasha—raised by her grandparents—always longed to live with her mother who had a troubled life. So, as soon as she turned 18, Natasha left her grandparents to reside with her mother.
Unfortunately, Natasha’s mother was a drug addict. Soon, Natasha also started abusing drugs. She went to jail 17 times. Her teeth
begin to fall out due to her drug use. The last time she was in jail, Natasha went to a drug treatment program. When she was released, she was referred to our mobile dental van for help.
“My teeth were severely damaged. I only had six teeth left on the top of my mouth,” Natasha said. Our staff and dental volunteers worked hard to provide Natasha with the care she needed.
Today, Natasha has her smile back. She’s in good health. She has been drug-free for more than three years. She is determined to return to school so that she can counsel others about the dangers of drug abuse. She said, “With my confidence back, I know I can accomplish my goals and my dreams.”
Natasha is one of 17,000 people served by our great team of volunteer dental professionals, local partners and financial supporters who make this program possible.

Priscilla Lewis grew up next door to a family that could not afford the health care needed for a dying relative.
This led her to spend 36 years in health care, first as a nurse and then in healthcare administration—
always with the goal to ensure people who needed help would have access to health
care. “It is really a privilege to be part of people’s lives as a nurse or health care provider. It changes you. You have to be an optimist when you see the grace of spirit in the most difficult times in people’s lives,” Priscilla says.
Working in Oregon, Priscilla also saw a need for dental care among patients with other health care problems. “I began to look for low-cost or free options for our needy patients. That’s what brought me to Medical Teams International.”
Medical Teams International has offered dental care to those who could not afford it since 1989. Today, the program serves more than 17,000 people in

Providence Health System, where Priscilla works, sponsors 48 clinics each year to continue this care in the Northwest.
As she worked with Medical Teams International, Priscilla said she became impressed with the commitment of staff to the organization’s mission and decided to join an international volunteer team in Guatemala. She took her 15-year-old daughter, Noelle, where they helped a community with a water project.
“I can’t say enough of the transformative power of the trip,” Priscilla said.
The work was challenging, Priscilla admits. They helped villagers dig a deep ditch to carry water pipes over hills and tree stumps so that clean water could reach the village.
Despite the challenges, Priscilla and Noelle view their lives differently after going to Guatemala. “It puts into perspective all the gifts and bounty of what we have here. It’s humbling to see these folks whose lives are not easy, but their spirits are certainly buoyant.”

The mother and daughter hope to annually revisit the friends that they made in Guatemala. “It’s the personal growth that is so important,” Priscilla concluded. “On a global scale we felt small, but when we make a one-on-one connection it is so powerful.”
Priscilla decided to make a difference by raising money for our work here at home and volunteering on one of our teams overseas. Find out how you can give or volunteer at: www.medicalteams.org.
