Please help us continue to be there

Every 24 hours 10 families are told the devastating news that their child has cancer. Diagnosis often comes as a complete shock. Treatment usually starts straight away and can last up to three years.

CLIC Sargent helps children, young people and their families as they struggle with the trauma of diagnosis, the often long, painful and diffi cult journey through treatment… and we continue to support them afterwards.

But we cannot do any of this without you - because we rely on your support to fund our vital services. Today we would like to say ‘thank you’ and to ask for your ongoing support: so that we can continue to help children and young people who have been diagnosed with this life-threatening disease.

FactEvery day in the UK ten children and young people are diagnosed with cancer.

“Zoe turned this yellow colour, even her eyes were yellow. They took three blood tests and we waited a whole month for the results – then they said: it’s cancer”, said Leah, Zoe’s mum. “I felt my legs almost give way.”

Zoe had to be taken to one hospital for chemotherapy, another for liver-related treatment and to her local hospital for check ups. Because CLIC Sargent Nurses work in hospital and the community, our nurse Lynn could continue to treat Zoe throughout her treatment.

Many children fi nd the idea of treatment scary. CLIC Sargent Play Specialists work on the ward and sometimes in the community. Explaining procedures through the familiarity of play, they help children cope better with treatment.

CLIC Sargent Social Workers are a key part of the hospital team too. They meet families soon after diagnosis, offering emotional and practical support. One example is helping families apply for a CLIC Sargent Care Grant to cope with the extra costs of caring for a child with cancer.

FactCLIC Sargent care professionals help around 5,000 children and young people with cancer every year.

£5 a month over a year will provide a half a day’s professional training for one of our care staff.

The average time a child with Leukaemia will be in treatment is two years for a girl and three years for a boy.

Thomas had an ear infection and was looking pale. He was given antibiotics and an iron supplement but further tests confirmed it was leukaemia. “We had to drop everything, get in an ambulance and go to the specialist unit which was an hour and a half away from home”, said Sharon, Thomas’ mum.

Here Thomas started his 28-day-long treatment. “On the first night I slept on a sofa in the TV room, and Sharon slept in the room next to Thomas,” said dad, Andrew. But CLIC Sargent met the family and gave

them keys to CLIC House, our Home from Home, a short walk from the hospital.

CLIC Sargent’s Homes from Home offer families somewhere free to stay close to the hospital. Here they can talk to other parents, and do practical things like laundry. So even though they are caring for a sick child miles from home, life can be as normal as possible.

When families return home, our family support service helps by picking up siblings from school, doing housework… whatever helps the most.

FactMore than 2,000 people a year stay in our Homes from Home.

In the UK 1,500-1,700 new cases are diagnosed each year in children 0-15 years.

We arrived at CLIC House

£20 a month over a year will fund a family to stay at a CLIC Sargent Home from Home for 10 days, where they can stay for free together within walking distance from the hospital.

When you hear that Tom has spent the last five months in hospital on treatment for a tumour in his back, it’s surprising he can laugh about anything. As a young person your mind is on friends, music, sport… and life on a cancer ward is a world away from all this.

“There are kids with cancer of all ages here, so you don’t get much privacy”, said Tom. On the ward, CLIC Sargent has a Youth Social Worker, Elizabeth. “She’s really nice and comes to see me most days. We’ll have a chat and a laugh together, and that helps”. Elizabeth helps with

practical things too, such as liaising with Tom and his tutor, so he can keep up with his schoolwork.

Many teenagers and young adults with cancer find themselves in children’s or adult wards. In many places there are no dedicated wards for these young people or staff trained to meet their particular needs.

CLIC Sargent offers support to young people in hospital and the community across the UK. Our youth groups help young people share experiences, socialise and learn new skills, such as being interviewed for college or work.

FactCLIC Sargent supports children and young people with cancer up to 24 years old.

£10 a month over a year will fund an activity weekend for a young person who has had cancer. Allowing them to restore self confidence and regain independence.

Currently through the NHS only 30% of young people receive age-appropriate care.

Seeing Simeon on the beach, it is hard to imagine that three years ago he was in a high dependency unit after surgery to remove a tumour.

“At one point, he couldn’t see, hear, swallow or even move, it was terrifying,” said mum June. “One day Simeon just seemed to turn the corner. When I came onto the ward he was riding a toy truck!” said dad Harold.

But there was still a long way to go. Simeon had chemotherapy, more surgery and radiotherapy. When he lost his hair, brother Kadeem shaved his off too. “Me and Kadeem are both bald like daddy,” Simeon told June.

CLIC Sargent provides family holidays free of charge to hundreds of families like Simeon’s. Malcolm Sargent House, on the Ayrshire coast, offers breaks with all meals provided and medical support on hand, if needed. We have four self catering luxury caravans around the English coast too.

£80 a month over a year will fund a family holiday in one of our holiday caravans.

50% of children with cancer (up to 16 years) will be aged under 5 at diagnosis.

FactWe provide over 500 free holidays to families every year.

Please help us to continue to careCancer is a long journey, full of ups and downs. Today another ten children and young people will find out they have cancer. We want to be there for each and every one of them along the way. But we rely on your support to continue to make it all happen.

Making a monthly gift (if you already haven’t done so) helps us know regular funds will be there to fund nurses like Lynn – and more nurses like her. You could do this right now by visiting: www.clicsargent.org.uk/donate. Leaving a gift in your Will is a lasting way to help children with cancer. To find out more visit: www.clicsargent.org.uk/Legacies.

Or you could make a donation by calling us, or by posting a cheque. And if you remember to tick the gift aid box, it means your gift is worth 28% more to us – but costs you nothing more.

There are lots of other ways to help: find out more at www.clicsargent.org.uk/Getinvolved

FactWe need to raise at least £22 million every year simply to continue running our vital services for children with cancer.
