  • Celebrate National Marriage Week 2021!

This February 7-14, 2021, we will celebrate National Marriage Week! This annual observance is a great prompt for everyone to reflect on the gift marriage is to our Church and our country, as well as an opportunity for couples to build up their own marriages. This year the retreat theme is “To Have, To Hold, To Honor.”

    Life & Dignity

International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking (Feb. 8, 2021)

With Pope Francis’ encouragement, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the International Union of Superiors General designated February 8th as an annual day of prayer, reflection, and awareness against human trafficking. On this day, the faithful across the world join together to support, remember, pray for, and be in solidarity with those affected by human trafficking. February 8 also coincides with the Feast Day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who, kidnapped at nine, was sold in Sudan’s slave-markets, flogged daily till covered with scars. St. Josephine Bakhita was finally bought by Italians and taken to Italy. Her last words were: “Our Lady! Our Lady!” John Paul II canonized her in the Jubilee Year 2000, praising God for leading her “from abject slavery to the dignity of being your daughter and the Bride of Christ.”

  • from Father John Paul

he Church receives her commands from her Lord and Master to be

active and tireless in continuing the proclamation of the Gospel which He began. When the Sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught (Mk 1:21). Then he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John (Mk 1:29). There he heals Simon Peter’s mother-in-law so that she is able to arise immediately and serve them. “The evening at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons.” The whole city was gathered around the door, and he cured many who were sick with various diseases and cast out many demons (Mk 1:32-34). Jesus was on his foot in reaching out to those in need.

St. Paul writes in the second reading today, “Woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel!” He further says: “If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me” (I Cor 9:16). He preaches the Gospel “free of charge” (I Cor 9:18). Paul becomes a slave to all to win them to Christ (I Cor 9:19). So, we must be like Paul…We must become, if necessary, all things to all.

We must cry out as Pope Paul VI cried out at Queen Circle, Manila: “Jesus Christ, I feel the need to proclaim him, I cannot keep silent. I must bear witness to his name. He is the teacher of mankind and its redeemer. He was born, died and rose again for us. And he is the center of history and of world. I could never finish speaking about him. The love of Christ urges us.” (II Cor 5:14). We must announce the Gospel to bring people from

darkness to light, from death to life, from ignorance to sure knowledge. Therefore, we must preach because people need Christ.

Simon and those who were with him said to Jesus, “everyone is searching for you” (Mk 1:37). If we search for Jesus, we will find the answer to human sufferings. Jesus, in the midst healing and curing the sick, comes into the life of everyone, especially when one is suffering. He came to alleviate suffering, “God heals the broken hearted, He winds up all their words” (Ps 146).

Then we must not delay. Here is our most urgent task. We must fill our hearts with the message of His love, His compassion, and His life. The Church is the visible sign, the sacrament of Christ’s presence in the world. Like Christ, the Church has to set out on a humble pilgrimage, discovering how to proclaim the Good News to the poor. Embrace the small and weak; heal the sick; bring joy to those in need; and take away the burdens of sin by the power of the Holy Spirit.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
