Thank You ! By the time that you receive my note, I will be returning to the states. I wanted to thank you for your mili-tary support. I, and my soldiers en-joyed the snacks & supplies that you provided. I thank you on behalf of everyone that enjoyed the goodies. Hope all is well in Birmingham. Appreciate all you do. Jeff Gilmore
(Jeff is one of the soldiers that we mailed goodies to during the Christ-mas holidays. We have received an American Flag and Certificate, that is located in the curio cabinet in the foyer, for you to view. This flag flew over his camp in Afghanistan.)
Living Up to Your Name - Part 2
Last week we saw how that Onesimus a run-away slave was not living up to his name which means “profitable.” However, after he was converted to Christ by Paul and he then returned to his master, he became truly profitable. Another example of one living up to his name is Simon Barjona, “Simon the son of Jona.” Simon was a fisherman who worked with James, John and his brother Andrew. All were to become disciples and later apostles of Jesus. Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, saying to him, “DYou are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" (which is translated, A Stone) (John 1:42). The expression “you shall be called” indicates that Simon would win his name. The name Peter means “a mass of rock de-tached from the bedrock.” At the time that Jesus said this Peter was a weak and vacillating person. While he had boldly confessed before the disciples that Jesus was the Christ and that he was willing to die with Him (Mt. 16:18; Mt. 26:35), before the Jews he denied Je-sus three times. When Jesus was arrested, Peter fol-lowed at a distance and he went into the high priest’s courtyard and sat with the servants to see the end. The Matthew records for us what happened. “Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, "You also were with Jesus of Galilee." 70 But he denied it before them all, say-ing, "I do not know what you are saying." 71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth." 72 But again he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!" who stood by came up and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you." 74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, ‘I do not know the Man!’” Later however, we see Peter change from one who was weak and vacillating to one who was strong and steadfast! Peter was the one to open the kingdom (Acts 2); who was imprisoned for preaching Christ (Acts 4:3); was threatened and told not to preach any-more (Acts 4:18, 21). He was imprisoned a second time (Acts 5:18) and later imprisoned by Herod who intended to kill him (Acts 12:1-3). Yet Peter did not waver. He declared that “We ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). Eventually he would die for Jesus even as Jesus had foretold. “Most as-suredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish. 19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spo-ken this, He said to him, ‘Follow Me’.” (John 21:18, 19). Peter was living up to his name!
