Roundtable: Connected Car to Connected World – The Road to MonetizationA new trend from “Connected Car” to a “Connected World” has opened up a vast new landscape of opportunities for the entire ecosystem and supply chain there are also many challenges that will need to be explored or overcome. Will the ecosystem be able to provide solutions and services fast enough to enable seamless and secure communication IoT enabled nodes in the network? If so, how will these companies be able to monetize their technology investments and is their current business models going to be able to compete e ectively against all the emerging disruptor innovations challenges ahead?

Roundtable: Creating Smart Cities for the Citizens, Not as Technological PlaygroundsAs engineers, we often create technology solutions and seek a problem to solve. Smart Cities requires a new way of thinking - fi nding out the problems, prioritizing them, then adapting technology or inventing technology to solve them. This is further compounded because it impacts the lives of the citizens for a long time as cities invest for 25 - 50 years. Deeply thinking about ROI and amount of investment is critical. This panel is comprised of members from the public and private sector to talk about the impact of exponential technological growth, policy, legislation, data privacy and all aspects of smart city implementation. Lessons learned will be shared to better understand what is needed as we face an aging and fast growing population including urban densifi cation.

Moderators - Carla Bailo, Center For Automotive Research Panelists - Chris Baker, KEOLIS North America; Thomas Bauer, Tra c Technology Services Inc.; Ken DiPrima, AT&T Internet of Things Solutions; Rachel Han, OpenDataSoft Co.; Tina Quigley, Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada; Karina Ricks, Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure

The Tech Hub

The Third Wave of the Internet and What that Means to the AutomobileWe have moved far beyond “fi le transfer” and “web page refresh” needs, which represented the First and Second Waves of the Internet. The Third Wave, which has now begun, requires the underlying Internet architecture to evolve. Data - of any type - is only useful if it is available at the time you need it and in the appropriate context - presented in a meaningful way, on the device you are using. This is irrespective if that device is a smartphone, a programmable manufacturing platform or an autonomous vehicle. This Third Wave must be built on a ubiquitous Internet that is completely integrated into every aspect of our lives; everything we do, every product and service we use.

This session will discuss the macro and micro trends that have brought us to this point and explore the underlying architectural fabric required to deliver on this promise that we will have of the Internet of Everything

Rear Ended in the Rinse Cycle (and other places) In a survey of over 500 car wash locations, the International Carwash Association (ICA) learned that over 60% of car washes are experiencing problems with shift-to-park transmissions, nearly 40% are having cars with ADAS technology or stop/start systems stop in the tunnel causing damage from vehicles approaching from behind and nearly 40% are having keyless entry systems locked by rotating brushes. The result is a rising amount of vehicle damage and increased costs for car wash operators and vehicle owners. In this fast paced presentation the results of the ICA survey will be presented along with a three-step solution proposal.Derek Kaufman, The Car Wash Association

Kirigami Optics – The Pathway to Flat LIDARsTraditional LiDARs exemplifi ed by iconic Velodyne models that ushered the development of autonomous vehicles, are costly and bulky. Complex algorithms are used to recognize objects and their movement patterns around driverless cars. Kirigami-patterned nanocomposites make possible thin, conformal, and inexpensive LIDARS. Furthermore, the laser beam modulators with kirigami optics enable new data processing tools that accelerate object recognition for timely assessment of driving situations around the vehicles.

Roundtable: Big Data and the Future of Diagnostics and Prognostics for PHM/IVHM (Co-sponsored by SAE International and PHM Society)As data becomes central to the operation and the maintenance of aircraft and automobiles, it is imperative that the standards that govern the handling of data are established early in the process. Both SAE International as well as the PHM Society are involved in various aspects of this endeavor. While the PHM Society has been involved in advancing the technology and disseminating knowledge about this, SAE International has started to identify gaps in the standards landscape and to begin the process of writing appropriate standards. Diagnostics have been around for a long time and are well understood and standardized. Given this history, there is a huge database of archived machine-readable diagnostic data that can be mined by big data analytics. This panel session brings together experts from automotive and aerospace industries to discuss data interoperability and big data techniques to help improve data collection and diagnostic analysis. The panelists will present case studies for the next generation of diagnostic and prognostics development.
