2 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF MARY

FROM THE PASTOR July 8, 2018 3

My dear sisters and brothers, As I begin my 9th year together with you here, I believe the most important thing I can do is watch and listen for the movement of the Holy Spirit. That flickering light, within each of you as individuals and within this congregation as a whole and to open myself, with the help of God’s grace, to be a vessel through which God’s Spirit can move to inspire you, to nurture you, and to lead you to more fully respond to the call of God in your lives. As a symbol of our Mutual Ministry; I offer you the gift of being able to see the big pic-ture and connect the dots. I offer you the gift of my love, my compassion, my intuition, my imagination, and my intellect. I offer you the gift of my eyes and ears, my voice, my heart, and my energy. I offer you the gift of being able to laugh with you and to laugh at myself. I offer you my vulnerability and my fierce commitment to honesty, integrity and justice. I offer you my faith in Jesus Christ, whose prophetic boldness and tender compassion I seek to follow. I offer you the gift of my strengths as well as the gift of my weakness, for I believe that God does and will work through both. I offer you my passion to reach out to those in our surrounding community who long for a spiritual home, who long for a faith community where they can

experience God’s extravagant love and gracious welcome no matter what their situation or station in life and who long to be part of a church that is committed to doing justice, loving mercy and walking humbly with their God. Thankful Everyday For the gift of people who listen to me, for the mercy of those who forgive me, for the help of all who pray for me, for the patience of those who wait for me, for the friendship of those who have my back, for the wisdom of folks who correct me, for the favor of those who endure me, for the strength of all who support me, and for the care of those who love me, thank you, Lord! Help me, Lord, to listen, forgive, pray, wait, protect, correct, abide, support and care for others as patiently and faithfully as I am generously loved...

Amen.

I thank our God each time I think of you for the gift of being able to serve you, with love Fr. Rich, SS.CC.

8 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME IN OUR COMMUNITY

July 8, 2018 9

TREATING ‘DISEASES OF DESPAIR’ NOT EVERY HEALTH CONDITION HAS A MEDICAL SOLUTION By Michael Rozier A couple of years ago, I was grading final exams for a class on global health when I came upon a very fine essay, but one that did not answer the question I had actually asked. I asked the student to visit my office so I could understand why he had written what he had. After some hedging, he said that he did not have any clue how to answer the question on the exam, so he figured his best shot was to compose a solid essay on a related topic that he knew well. I secretly admired his ingenuity.

Today, something similar is happening in health care, but I fear it is less intentional than my student’s behav-ior—and the consequences are much more serious.

The suicide rate in the United States jumped by more than 20 percent in one decade, from 10.9 deaths per 100,000 people in 2005 to 13.3 deaths in 2015. Alcohol-related deaths have recently reached a 35-year high. And drug overdose deaths continue to climb at alarming rates despite national attention to the opioid cri-sis.

In general, we see these tragedies as matters of medicine and public health. But that is only part of the story. A small but growing segment of the health care world has started to describe these and similar conditions as “diseases of despair.” This idea suggests that some of the major drivers of substance abuse, suicide and even certain chronic physical conditions are hopelessness, an absence of opportunity and unrealized desires for be-longing.

It is understandable that many actors in the health care system do not consider despair to be a driving factor of these medical conditions. Much like my student, who knew he could not accurately answer the exam question, practitioners are not always well equipped to deal with matters of hope and belonging. So they respond to what they do know: the medical aspects of the disease. There is nothing inherently wrong with this. It only be-comes a problem if the institutions that can help to ask and answer existential questions are sidelined or fail to contribute their expertise.

As a priest, I often face the flip side of this coin. When students and parishioners seek counsel, I must determine whether I can provide adequate care or must refer them to another kind of professional. I fail them if I pretend a psychological or medical issue can be solved with spiritual direction or pastoral care. The same is true when we accept systems that suggest there are medical solutions for existential and social crises.

Diseases of despair can affect anyone, but we must pay particular attention to the marginalized groups who are the most affected. People with a disability are at least twice as likely to have a substance abuse disorder as the non-disabled. L.G.B.T. youth and military veterans commit suicide at higher rates than their heterosexual and civil-ian counterparts. Native Americans have the highest rate of heavy alcohol use of any ethnic group in the United States. The litany of those who suffer the most is sadly predictable, and one of the primary reasons is that they are given fewer reasons to hope, see less opportunity and are denied a sense of belonging.

Effective medical and public health interventions are necessary to solve diseases of despair. We must promote medication-assisted treatment and change physicians’ prescribing behaviors for opioids. We must properly fund mental health care and reduce access to means used for suicide, especially guns. But every health condi-tion does not have a medical solution.

In order to effectively fight these diseases and help people lead flourishing lives, we must also begin asking better questions. Questions of why opportunity is not distributed equally across our society. Questions of what form community and belonging take in the modern world. Questions of how to communicate hope in a way that is believable. If we take these questions seriously, the diseases will not disappear entirely, but they will no longer be driven by despair.

Don't let your worries get the best of you; Remember, Moses started out as a basket case.

MEDITACION EN ESPAÑOL July 8, 2018 11

Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, Comienzo mi octavo año junto con ustedes, Creo que la cosa más importante que puedo hacer es ver y escuchar el movimiento del Espíritu Santo, que chispea luz, dentro de cada uno de ustedes como individuos y dentro de esta congregación en su conjunto y para abrirme yo mismo, con la ayuda de la gracia de Dios, a ser un recipiente a través del cual el Espíritu de Dios puede moverse para inspirar, para nutrir, y para llevarlos a responder mejor a la llamada de Dios en sus vidas. Como símbolo de nuestro Ministerio Mutuo;

DID YOU KNOW? Cell Phone snapshots might not be so innocent Nearly everyone has a cell phone and that may be great for communication and connection, but it also gives rise to concerns about who may be taking photos of you or your children without your knowledge. You can’t police the behaviors of others around you, but you can avoid taking pictures of your own children in public, and posting photos online that give away the locations of your favorite parks and hangouts. If your children have phones, monitor the photos they are taking and sharing, too.

SUPPORT YOUTH MINISTRY The City of Saints Teen Conference is a Catholic teen conference hosted by Archbishop Jose Gomez and the Youth Ministry Division of the Arch-diocese of Los Angeles. This 3 day event is a wonderful and local op-portunity for young people to deepen their relationship with Jesus. The conference features dynamic speakers, diverse liturgical experiences, music, interactive exhibits, opportunities to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and penance, and more. All of this is set in an atmosphere where teens can learn and experience the beauty of the Catholic faith with its rich symbols and traditions.

Holy Name of Mary is taking a group of teens to this conference. These teens who will attend already give back to our community in unimaginable ways. Youth Ministry will be hosting several delicious fundraisers in order to help them offset the conference fee of $250.00. If you cannot make any of our fundraisers, you are welcome to make a donation online via Online Giving or making a donation in our parish office. Checks payable to Holy Name of Mary Memo: City of Saints Conference. For more information or ways to give please contact Jamie Alarcon, Youth Ministry Assistant (909) 599-1243 ext. 220 [email protected].
