Ed Gain, DTMDistrict Governor
Welcome to the Spring Conference!
he first Armed Forces Day was on May 20, 1950. Since then, it has been celebrated every year on the third Sat-urday in May. The theme for the first Armed Forces day was “Teamed for Defense,” which expressed the unifi-cation of all military forces under one government department.
My theme for this year is “Geared for Success!” This theme represents my belief that we have the talent, expertise and energy in our District to achieve any goal that we desire. I have been privileged to meet many of the amazing and talented members of District 5 during my Toastmasters journey. Today you will be witnessing some of those talents.
To get the most out of your Toastmasters journey, I invite you to look beyond the contests. You will see a remarkable panoply of volunteers that keep the gears of our District running smoothly. These volunteers have embraced the ideals of servant leadership and in return have felt the joy of helping others to achieve success.
The theme for this Conference is “Step up for District 5!” It is a not-so-subtle invitation to step out of your comfort zone and step into a servant leadership role with District 5.
On this Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 17, 2014, I perso- nally extend a heartfelt appreciation to our military mem-bers for their patriotic service in the support of our country; to the many volunteers who have make our District shine, and to the contestants who have entertained and inspired us during this contest season.
THANK YOU!You have all stepped out of your
comfort zone to serve others!

PAT JOHNSON served as President of Toastmasters International for the year 2010-2011. Imagine the varied and chal-lenging opportunities of a shy, insecure woman who started this amazing journey in northern Manitoba and found herself the spokesperson for an international communication and leadership organiza-tion active in 122 countries of the world!
Join her as she shares her perspectives and experiences on her amazing journey of leadership that began when she first joined Toastmasters in 1983. Pat is a firm believer that Toast-masters provides us with a safe and supportive environment in which to grow and develop.
Pat continues to serve Toastmasters as Moderator for the Learning Masters, who provide expertise to the Revital-ized Education Program; she also is serving as Chairman of International Leadership Committee for 2013-14. Pat has been active in a number of community, education, and arts organizations, including Rotary International, the Com-monwealth Games, and Leadership Victoria. She is now Assistant Director of Learning and Development for the BC Pension Corporation, in addition to developing her own speaking and speaker coaching business.
In this Keynote Address, she will share her thoughts, stories and experiences of how we can support one another through-out our developmental journey to personal achievement. Meet some of the characters that have taught her life lessons – you may recognize some of them in your life.

DON GRIFFITH has been a very dedicat-ed Toastmaster for many years. Having been elected as International Director for Region 10 for 2012-2014, he is an amazing “working ambassador” for the organization. He works with the Board to develop and support the policies and procedures that guide Toastmasters In-ternational in fulfilling its mission.
Don is a a retired electrical engineer. Throughout his distin-guished 42-year engineering career, his work was recogniz-ed for excellence in design, customer service and problem-solving. An Advanced Class amateur radio operator, Griffith also participates in disaster preparedness training, provid-ing emergency radio communications. Don now owns and operates a genealogical research service dedicated to helping people discover their heritage and their place in history.
“Taking full advantage of ‘stage time’ opportunities in and out of the club has given me the confidence and facility to handle just about any speaking situation,” he says.
Don recognizes that all of us do a good job of marketing Toastmasters and turning guests into members, but our “Achilles Heel” seems to be keeping those members over the long term. What would happen if our clubs were so good that no one would even think about leaving? In this interactive educational session, Don will address the challenge of member retention. Join him and help to discover and share winning strategies that can make your club “too good to quit!”
