Dear Friends,

In 2013-2014, the Board of Directors unanimously approved a shift in method from trying to keep up with unmet community needs to addressing the underlying causes of those needs. This step is a continuation in our alignment with the focus areas of Education, Financial Stability and Health, providing the building blocks for a solid community. To that end, we are happy to report that we established and filled a new staff position this year, Director of Community Impact. As a United Way, we are uniquely positioned to train the spotlight on critical issues, engage with private and public sector leaders, and coordinate agendas with partners to influence collective efforts. When we leverage our role as a funder to build relationships between organizations rather than fund them individually, we are also redefining our own role within a larger context for impact.

The difference we make in people’s lives is the reason for our work. The Annual Campaign grows the financial support needed to make this good work happen. Our efforts, under the leadership of Campaign Co-Chairs Chad Morrison and Gerry Thistle, began with a flash mob at the Sebastian Clambake Lagoon Festival. They went on to raise over $2,600,000, which was leveraged into over $3 million, now pouring into Indian River County supporting human needs.

United Way partnered with Historic Dodgertown for the Jackie Robinson Celebration Game on April 15. This was a tribute to professional baseball’s first African-American player, especially poignant here in Vero Beach where he played with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948. This first, of what will be an annual event, honored the significant strides made in baseball here in Indian River County while benefiting our current community in multiple ways.

We were pleased and proud when Kip Jacoby, long time United Way of Indian River County volunteer leader, was elected to chair the United Way of Florida Board of Governors. Kip’s great insight and passion for the work of United Way has been a tremendous asset both here in Indian River County and around the state.

United Way is a proven leader in addressing pressing community issues effectively and efficiently. Thank you for joining us as a volunteer, donor, funded partner, or business, we look forward to working with each of you to strengthen our community for everyone.

Sincerely,

Chris Loftus Michael KintBoard Chair CEO

Mission:To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.

Vision:United Way of Indian River County will proactively build a strong, healthy and caring community. United Way will bring our community together to focus on the most important human needs by building partnerships, forging consensus and leveraging resources to make a measurable difference.

Graduation rates in Indian River County have risen from 68% in 2009 to 80% in 2013. But that means 20% of young men and women won’t have a high school diploma, leaving them at high risk for a future of poverty. Research tells us that in order to graduate more high school students, more children need to come to school ready to learn and by 3rd grade, more students need to be reading at grade level.

That’s why United Way works with community partners to educate new parents; support quality childcare and early learning; provide tutoring and one on one mentoring; and develop young people to become responsible citizens.

Education

The cost of housing, health care, child care, gas and other basics is far surpassing income in America. Almost 15% of households in Indian River County have an income between $15,000 and $25,000. After basics, there is often no money left to save for buying a home, sending kids to college or retiring. Just one unanticipated expense – a car breakdown, an uninsured illness, a week without a paycheck – can lead to crisis.

United Way supports programs and initiatives that alleviate hunger; prevent and rapidly rehouse the homeless; assist with education or vocational and skill training; help families increase income; and prepare tax returns facilitating the highest possible credits and refunds. Financial Stability

Good health is fundamental to people’s capacity to enjoy their lives, provide for their families, and realize their dreams. 26% of people in Indian River County are uninsured and a full 1/5 are in only poor to fair health. United Way seeks to promote healthy lives. This is done through programs providing mental health services; hearing loss assistance; pediatric dental care; child abuse prevention and support; substance abuse treatment; nutritious meals and respite care for vulnerable populations. Health

Over and above the almost $2 million spent on direct services and grants, United Way supported community needs for information referral, disaster preparedness, and the Non-profit Incubation Center.

Day of Caring is a familiar event to this community. United Way matches the needs of area nonprofits with volunteer teams giving people a chance to work together for the good of others. 389 men, women and children turned out to complete projects at sites all over Indian River County. Painting, yard work, power washing, window washing, and food sorting were some of the many projects done for area nonprofits. Piper Aircraft, Inc., provided four teams of volunteers as well as sole sponsorship for Day of Caring.
