HABIT (Human Animal Bond in Tennessee) is an animal-assisted interaction program made up of more than 550 volunteer teams. Each week, these volunteer teams make contacts across East Tennessee in area nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, and hospice programs.
HABIT was founded in 1986 as a joint effort of the University of Tennessee College of Social Work and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Today we are one of the oldest animal-assisted interaction programs in the nation. Our teams, which started in one location in Knoxville, can now be found in over 160 programs in 15 east Tennessee counties.
