Our 100th Anniversary year in Newmarket was marked by events and celebrations – from the flag-raising on the first day of school, to the unfurling of our athletic banners, to 2010 Grads passing through the Pillars en route to exciting new adventures. We marked our fundraising efforts with extraordinary success with PC events, as well, themed on our 100th. Our Spirit of Community shone through with a record-breaking and most festive Holiday Home Tour; we saw the school transformed at the 100th Anniversary Gala; and the Golf Tournament was a great success. Your generosity didn’t stop with events. While individual gifts to the annual fund saw a decrease, other donations to our community, by parents, past parents, grandparents, staff, faculty, alumni and friends stepped up in support of scholarships and bursaries; capital needs such as building repair; co-curricular programs; student awards; teacher professional development; improvements to technology and teaching aids; and so much more. Overall, fundraising efforts improved by one-third over the previous year. In recognition of the role that events played in the 2009/2010 school year, we expanded the criteria for recognition lists in this Thank You to Donors report to include those who supported the Annual Fund through contributions through events. We are very, very grateful to each and every one of our school’s supporters, and to each and every one of the extraordinary, selfless volunteers who make it possible for PC to reach its goals. We hope you enjoy the stories about such parents and alumni found in the pages of this report.

Pickering continues to become even more exciting! Your investment in our school makes the difference for each student. And each student, reaching their potential, can make the difference in the world.

With thanks,

The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of all fundraising at Pickering College – the very foundation

upon which all other fundraising efforts rest. It is the only ongoing, annual fundraising activity that

touches every member of the Pickering College community. While we host several events each year in

support of the Annual Fund, individual giving by alumni, families, faculty, staff and friends is vital to

the success of the PC Annual Fund.

Our Achieving Balance Annual Fund campaign reflected key funding priorities which we call our Headmaster’s

Initiatives. Designed to support our greatest needs, the projects funded through the Headmaster’s Initiatives

contribute to the creation of an environment that allows and encourages students to explore new interests,

activities, talents and opportunities, safe in the knowledge that they are well-supported.

Headmaster’s Initiatives

Even in Grade 8, Angelica Blenich '03 knew she was destined to do something other than just attend her local high school in Richmond Hill. She wanted some-thing different. She wanted a place to study where she could grow and excel. Parents Peter and Darlene chose Pickering College. Today, all four Blenich children – Angelica, Daniel, Nicholas and Emilie – have benefited from their PC education.

As a student (1999-2003) and now an alumna, Angelica has made a significant contribution to the school. An active, involved student, she also worked for two summers in the Admissions Department. “During the school year, I babysat many times for Jayne Fillman who was the admissions director. So, when she offered me a summer job, I jumped at the chance.”

It didn’t take her too long after graduation to commit to her alma mater. Elected to the PC Corporation, she’s served as a volunteer member since 2006. Last year, Angelica’s signature on the Give Your Year fundraising campaign appealed to graduates from 1996 to 2003. She’s a frequent donor to the Annual Fund, so was more than happy to be the Young Alumni rep for the fund. She’s also supported special endowment campaigns like the Promise Fund.

It may strike some as unusual for such a young person to have enough funds to donate, but, as she points out: “If I can buy a new pair of shoes or a dress, I can surely afford to donate to Pickering College.”

Graduating from PC in 2003, Angelica earned a four- year Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in political science and international development, from Dalhousie University. She followed this with a Journalism post-grad degree from the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Today, even as she’s making her mark as a general assignment reporter with the Haliburton Echo and the Minden Times, she finds time to attend as many Pickering events as she can.

One thing she’s always found difficult? “I’ve always been an involved kind of person and I find it difficult to say ‘no’. When Pickering College asks me to come back and take on a new volunteer role, I automatically want to say ‘yes’ but know I can’t always because of distance, time and my new career.”

Her motivation for giving back is simple: being a part of Pickering really made a difference in her life. “Pickering College played a really important role in my life. Attending the school helped me define who I was and who I was to become. I am proud of who I am and what I’ve become and I want to pay it forward.”

She describes her time at Pickering as being full of “character-building moments.” She credits the small classes, the focus on a solid education and the support of her teachers as contributors to her happy school memories. “I especially felt inspired as a Senior student during our morning meetings with Peter Sturrup. He always set a course for the day with his thought-provoking sayings.”

In the future, Angelica intends to continue her volunteer commitment and donating to Pickering. She credits her mother with being a terrific role model. “I guess when you look at my Mom, the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree!”

It has been exciting to see the listing of annual supporters grow each year and even more exciting

to see such growth in our Circle of Friends. The Circle of Friends recognizes leadership giving

of $1,000 or more during the fiscal year.

This year we are delighted to welcome over 130 members to our Circle of Friends.

These findings fit Pickering College parents and active volunteers Mirella Morra and her husband, John, to a tee. Volunteering at PC seemed to come naturally to Mirella.

Even though they’ve only been a part of Pickering for three years, they’ve already formed strong social bonds and their efforts keep strengthening our community. Just a few examples: Mirella’s involve-ment helped propel two Spring Galas to success. Her passion and creativity was essential to the décor team. With the help of her husband John, she was able to source auction items and various sponsorships. John provided a free “man-jack” which made the décor possible and alleviated an expense that this would have created. Mirella’s involvement in this event did not stop there! She invited her entire family to the party, further enhancing the sense of community and family at PC.

Mirella also took part in the Fun Fair and is an enthusi-astic volunteer for the classroom. John, self-employed in the building materials business, provided a lot of legwork and source information for the Gala. And, most important to them, their volunteerism sets an example they hope their Grade 1 daughter, Michaela, will follow.

“We see Pickering College as her second home, “says Mirella. “As such, we want her to know, through our example, that getting involved builds on the sense of community that so many built before us. We have a responsibility to do this.”

The Morras enrolled Michaela in Junior Kindergarten at Pickering because they heard glowing reports from other parents, some of whom work with Mirella at the Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket.

“I was so impressed with how other parents spoke of the school and of how the guiding values permeated everything. I quickly learned that ‘servant leadership’ isn’t just talk. Everyone at PC lives these values.”

When Michaela started at Pickering, she was only three years old, the youngest child the school had ever enrolled. Any potential concerns her parents had evaporated as they experienced universal welcoming behaviours of teachers, students and staff. “Older kids say hello; she’s saying ‘hi’ back to them. She’s excited about going to school. That’s all the reassurance we needed to know we had picked the right school.”

Along with volunteering, the Morras donate to the Annual Fund each year as part of the Circle of Friends. “I want to help the school grow, support the strate-gic plan and ensure Pickering’s small class sizes and individual attention to students continues.”

Now that Michaela is a little older, Mirella’s goal is to become even more involved with PC and in fact, she will be Chair of PC’s 2012 Gala. For now, she estimates she commits about 90 minutes a week volunteering. She finds it a rewarding use of her time. “I’m helping to build a stronger sense of community, meeting new people and having lots of fun.”

Her advice to potential parent volunteers: “Start small. Stick your toe in the water. If you can only give an hour of your time, do it.”

A few years ago, Multicultural and Citizenship Canada conducted an anecdotal study about vol-unteer motivation. Survey administrators concluded in Why People Volunteer: “The formula for success-ful volunteering appears to go something like this:

•provide opportunities for personal achievement; •allowvolunteerstomakenewdiscoveriesabout

themselves and others; •and enable them to feel they are forming social

bonds and strengthening their community.

Mix with appropriate training, feedback and recog-nition and you have volunteers who feel energized by the assignment, see it as fun to do and complete it feeling better than when they started.”

Hockey Day on the Hilltop 2010

Many families have contributed to the life of Pickering College as it is today. One of those families is the Veale family. Thanks in large part to Eric Veale ‘31, students enjoy the arena. In addition, his sons, Roger ‘61, Ronald ‘63 and David ‘68 – graduates of PC – are still involved with the school today.

The Veale legacy began in the late 1920s when Eric Veale, of Beaverton, Ontario, attended PC. Later, in the early 1930s he began working as a tutor, or faculty assistant. He left the college and began steadily ris-ing in the ranks in business, most notably at General Motors of Canada. Then his life took an interesting turn.

“Dad realized that this career path wasn’t working for his family,” says son Ronald. “He was away from us too much.” So when Eric was offered the job of teacher of business and mathematics at PC, he jumped at the chance, returning to the college in 1956.

Eric taught until 1970 and served one year as Headmaster when Harry Beer was on a sabbatical. In his final year (and into retirement) he took up the challenge of raising funds for a new ice hockey arena. At the time, students clearly needed a new place to play, as ice time at the Newmarket Arena had become expensive and difficult to secure. The Board felt Eric was the best person to head up the campaign.

“In some ways, Dad viewed the completion of the arena as a bit of a pay back to the place that had been so good to him,” says Roger.

All three Veale sons attended PC when their father was a faculty member. They were not alone: the “Beer boys” and the “Blackstock boys” were students at the same time. Eric’s eldest son, Roger, attended from 1956 to 1961 and had at least two classes with

his father. “Having Dad as my teacher in Grade 9 and Grade 11 was an interesting experience. He was wise enough to distance himself from me and our relation-ship outside of class.”

Roger followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a teacher and, eventually, a school superintendent. He’s still connected and committed to PC. He served close to ten years on the Pickering College Board and has been an active member of the Pickering College Corporation for the past 14 years. As of November 2010, he is again on the Board. He still has lunch two or three times a year with his high school buddies Brian Blackstock and Ken Hills, and is a regular Annual Fund donor.

Why is he so committed? “Our family was intimately involved with Pickering College. The school, and the people connected with it, was our larger family.” Whether they were attending classes or chapel, taking part in sports or joining their mother and father for dinner at the College on Sunday night, it was their home away from home.

Second son, now Mr. Justice Ronald Veale of the Supreme Court of the Yukon, attended PC from 1958 to 1963. He says the two big influences on his life while at school were sports and the questioning nature of his studies. “Everyone at Pickering had to play a sport; it was mandatory but it was fantastic—a fantastic, healthy way to develop a lifelong sport. Dad was an athlete in his day. He used to ski a lot. At one time, the College had a connection to Limberlost Lodge in Huntsville, Ontario, so he got lots of chances to ski.”

Ronald recalls the second biggest influence – that the focus of much of his studies wasn’t just about passing and moving on. “We were constantly being chal-lenged to answer questions like: ‘what are you going to do later on in life?’ and ‘what is going to be your contribution to a better world’?”

He acknowledges the contribution of his “fabulous” teachers. Teachers such as Harry Beer, Keith McLaren, Don Menard and Judd Purdy who began his history classes by challenging his students with questions like: “what is better than honour?”

The youngest Veale, David, attended PC from 1961 to 1967. An active athlete, he played all the sports, including hockey and football. Now in real estate, over the years he’s attended a number of College-sponsored events, especially the golf fundraiser. He also donates to the Annual Fund campaign.

planned giving pRovides peaCe of mind

Daniel Weinzweig is convinced that attending Pickering College changed the life of his son, Joshua. When he applied to PC, Josh was a young man strug-gling to find his place in the public school system. As a result, his parents were more than pleased when then Headmaster Sheldon Clark told Daniel that his son “read beautifully” and he would be pleased to enroll him.

In five short years, Josh blossomed. He made friends. He was named Chair of his House. He made the Headmaster’s List on several occasions. And, he thrived in his English Literature courses. Even when he wasn’t in class, he read and wrote plenty of poetry and short stories.

Following Josh’s premature death in 1995, just two years after graduating from Pickering, Daniel expressed his gratitude in a most tangible, long-lasting way. He provided funds to create the Joshua Weinzweig Creative Writing Program and the Joshua Weinzweig Memorial Awards. He also decided to create a lasting personal legacy through Planned Giving.

Planned gifts can include charitable bequests pro-vided in a will, gifts of new or existing life insurance policies and gifts of retirement funds. Planned gifts do not have to be designated. They can apply towards the school’s highest priorities, or to supple-ment teaching/capital requirements, or to create student awards.

“Planned Giving is just so easy,” says Daniel. “It’s as easy as adding a line to your will. But it’s incredibly satisfying. It gives me peace of mind to know the legacy of my son lives on long after I’m gone.”

Daniel’s involvement with Pickering, through the creative writing program and the awards that go to Grades 9 to 12 students who demonstrate excellence and dedication to creative writing, is very much a joint effort between donor and recipient. “The program, and the awards, would not be as impactful without the full support of Peter Sturrup and Dean Gessie. The way the school embraced the awards has been tremendous.”

Daniel meets often with Dean to share ideas; he attends annual graduation ceremonies to present the awards. He also sponsors the Visiting Authors Program and he recently brought in David Gilmour, author of The Film Club, winner of the 2005 Governor General’s Award for Fiction. He comments, “The fact that Pickering is developing English Literature as one of the cornerstones of its programming means it’s going to be a beacon for parents and students. They’ll want to come to Pickering for its outstanding English Lit program.”

When Daniel was growing up, his parents advised him to leave a legacy “where it really counted.” His parents were excellent role models for doing so. Father John Weinzweig was the celebrated Canadian composer who founded the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Music Centre. Mother Helen Weinzweig was an award-winning author nominated for a Governor General’s Award for Fiction for her 1989 novel View From The Roof. Awards and honours in their names now exist at the University of Toronto and the Toronto Public Library.

John Weinzweig was quoted by writer Dave Foley in the Winter 2003 issue of Notations, the newsletter of the Canadian Music Centre, as saying, “If something wasn’t around and I felt strongly that it should be, I went out and did it. I didn’t ask anybody, I just did it.” It appears Daniel, managing partner and founder of Searchlight, an executive search firm in the media and entertainment sectors, learned his lessons well and is leaving a lasting impact on current and future Pickering College students.

By the Numbers

Annual Fund 2009/2010 raised almost $30,000 more than budgeted – thank you!

Pickering College had an outstanding year in student achievement and programming in 2009/2010 and our continued investment in increasing philanthropic giving can only enhance this progress.

The school targets 90% of total revenue to come from tuition and fees and 10% from other sources. In 2010, parent paid tuition and fees dropped to 86.7% of PC’s total revenue, with auxiliary programs, rentals, investment income and donations and fundraising revenue making up the balance.

A total of $635,000 was raised through fundraising efforts, significantly higher than the 2008/2009 total of $478,000. This can be broken down as follows:

• $387,000wasraisedthroughtheAnnualFundofwhich almost $345,000 was in unrestricted giving. Events led the way in fundraising successes, with a record-breaking Holiday Home Tour 2009 and a successful Golf Tournament. The Spring Dinner/Dance, themed in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Pickering College in Newmarket, raised three times the amount that was budgeted.

• $147,000wasdonatedtoendowments,including a very generous gift of $100,000 into the C.R. Blackstock Fund, and gifts from the 2010 graduating students and their families to endowments and to direct donations to the Arts program at PC.

• $91,000wasraisedinsupportofThePillarsRestoration project, and

• $10,000wasreceivedasdonationsfor the Athletic Complex.

Thousands of volunteer hours contributed by our parents and alumni make these results possible, in partnership with a dedicated Development and Parent and Alumni Relations team. In addition, many, many donations of gifts-in-kind help our bottom line, and in 2009/2010, PC received an estimated $185,000 in gifts-in-kind, including the opportunity to have a renowned chef prepare our 100th Anniversary Gala dinner, and an extraordinary gift of fleece jackets from alumni in Hong Kong.

THANK YOU TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF OUR PICKERING COLLEGE SUPPORTERS!

an endowment CReates a lasting legaCY

I believe in Pickering College, and I believe in the

need for a really strong endowment program, to

help the school to grow and to help deserving kids

come here now and in the future. I’ve been talking

about this for years, including when I was on the

Board. So like a number of other alumni, here’s

what I do – I put my money where my mouth is. I’m

proud to invest in the students through supporting

endowments.

–Ed Richardson ’45

investor in the Blackstock, McCulley, Veale,

and Jewell endowments at PC

Growing endowments is a primary focus of Pickering College. It is a goal of the school to be able to provide our student population with the neces-sary financial aid, to ensure we get, and keep, the kind of students who will make a positive difference here and in the world they inherit. Endowments also support specific programs, to provide the funding needed to help our teachers excel at what they do.

This year, among other generous endowment donations, such as to The Promise Fund, PC was honoured to benefit once more from an initiative by the family and friends of the late Peter Widdrington ’48, marking the occasion of Peter’s 80th birthday with gifts to the endowment in his name. We believe Peter would have liked this very much. Peter's friends, like Robert Prittie '49, are stalwart supporters of endowment funds to provide for the future of the school and its students. The Grads of 2010, with the help of their families, started building an endowment to recognize their year, in addition to providing expendable funding for the Arts program. What a great start to their alumni years!

Thank you to everyone who supports scholarships, bursaries and endowments at Pickering College.

If you wish to learn more about endowments at PC, please contact Kim Bilous, Executive Director, Development at [email protected] or 905-895-1700 ext.260.

Endowment giving offers opportunity to create a lasting legacy. Endowment gifts are not spent, they are

invested in perpetuity, with the income providing a stable and flexible source of annual funding to support

the school’s priorities. These funds are, in a very tangible way, a gift from those who have loved and supported

Pickering College to the generations of students who will experience our community in the future.

The power of the Pickering College community was ever present at the 2009/2010 signature events

– Holiday Home Tour, The 100th Anniversary Gala, Spring Luncheon and Golf Tournament.

Raising nearly $260,000 (up 33 per cent over the previous year), activity was driven and inspired

by dynamic volunteers, generous event supporters, and a fun-loving community of parents, alumni,

past parents, faculty and staff, grandparents and friends. Each event played a vital role in growing

the Spirit of Community at PC, allowing us to sustain and grow the exceptional programs, resources

and experiences offered to students.

Thank you to each and every one of you who organized, participated in and donated to

The Holiday Home Tour is a very special event for Pickering College. It has become a tradition that kicks off the festive season for many, uniting our school with the larger community in this wonderful celebration of the season. Volunteers worked the entire year to bring Holiday Home Tour 2009 to fruition, and spent countless hours connecting Pickering College with many local businesses, florists, decorators, home owners, artisans and vendors, to make the event a record-breaking success. Over $70,000 was raised, with ten per cent of net proceeds going to Southlake Regional Health Centre Maternal Child Care Program. Congratulations to Co-Chairs Tracey Antchak and Heather Smith.
