The Traditional Story In 1620, on board the Mayflower, the English pilgrims that
wanted to remain faithful to their religion, and not to adopt the one of the king of England, embarked for America.
They arrived on American soil in December 1620, in the winter, and very few among them survived, because they could not grow plants during that season.
Fortunately for the rest, a Native American named Samoset taught them how to cultivate the earth and gave them some grains of corn to sow. In November 1621, the harvest was very good and the pilgrims celebrated it with the Native Americans.
The Holiday To celebrate the memory of these
pilgrims and to give thanks to the Native Americans for allowing them to live and prosper, Thanksgiving Day became a national holiday. It takes place on the last Thursday in November each year.
Since this time the traditional meal of Thanksgiving consists of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie for dessert.
