What is Thanksgiving?

• Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the 4th Thursday in November.

Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?

People from England left their country to live in the United States so they could practice their religion freely.

They were called “pilgrims.” They came on a boat called

the Mayflower on a long, hard journey across the ocean.

Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?

• When they came to America, it was very cold and hard to survive. Many pilgrims became ill or died.

• The Native Americans helped them very much their first year, showing them how to use the things they found in nature and what crops to plant for food.

Page 5: Thanksgiving in La Guindalera!

• When it was time for harvest the next year, the pilgrims had many crops to gather…enough for the year ahead and more. They would not have survived without the help of the Native Americans.

• So the Native Americans and Pilgrims decided to have a large feast (meal) together to celebrate the big harvest and “give thanks” for all they had.

Thanksgiving today!

• Thanksgiving is still a time for people to gather together, spend time with their families and be grateful for all they have.

• In the U.S., most people go to the house of a family member and have a very big meal together.
