As Memorial Day rolls around this May 30,more than a few of us are busy, thinkingabout picnics and opening the cottageand inding the best deals at the mall. Butmany American families are going to beremembering their loss — the absence of adear one who gave his or her life in serviceto the armed forces. Especially painful arethe memories of loved ones who sufferedfrom post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)after returning home and who took theirown lives.
A 2012 report from the U.S. Departmentof Veterans Affairs suggests that as manyas 22 veterans take their own lives everyday, many of them while suffering fromPTSD; many more make an attempt butsurvive. It’s a heavy toll, on top of wartimelosses.
These men and women may have beenburdened with guilt for acts committedduring war; they might have been unableto forget terrible violence committedagainst themselves or comrades-at-arms,or even against innocents caught in thewrong place at the wrong time.
They may be veterans of the Vietnam War,the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom orEnduring Freedom. They may have servedoverseas during combat or on a ship or on a
