Conference Paper 2

• “Innovative types and abilities of neural networks based on associative mechanisms and a new associative model of neurons”

• Main Idea– A new kind of neural networks, called as-neurons– The structure is automatically constructed and parameters are

automatically computed on the basis of plastic mechanisms– Allows to quickly create associations and establish weighted

connections between neural representations of data, their classes, and sequences

– Automatically interconnect representing similar or sequential data

Conference Review

• Conference and Sessions– During registration, they lost my name tag at first, but made a

new one for me on the same day– There were only few people in the audience

• Due to it being the last day

– The chair was a little disorganized with time– Provided two thick books containing accepted papers

• Banquet– Banquet was very lively– Very good social environment– People were very willing to mingle with other researchers, ex-

change contact information, and engage in conversations about research and non-research topics

• There were a lot of Polish people in the conference• But I was able to meet a lot of people from other countries,

too (due to high number of attendees), at the banquet and during the succeeding days

Conference Review

• People– There were noticeable a big number of Polish people– Nevertheless, I was able to meet a lot of people from other

countries (due to high number of attendees), at the banquet and during the succeeding days

– The biggest international crowd I have met in a conference• American professor from Purdue University, three Polish guys, a Polish girl, a

Czech, a Taiwanese professor who knows Taichi, an Indonesian girl taking her Phd in Taiwan, a Mexican, an Uruguayan, and a Spanish guy

City Info

• Zakopane, Poland– Normally 2-3 hours from Krakow Int’l airport– Took me 5 hours because it was raining; going back to the air-

port was faster (sunny day)– 1 bus to Krakow city center, 1 bus to Zakopane Bus terminal,

and taxi to the hotel– The journey from Krakow to Zakopane is a sight to see; lots of

very cute, almost identical, triangular houses, pine trees, and green fields

– Weather is cold (equivalent to late autumn in Korea)

• Hotel Mercure Kasprowy– Three-star hotel– Whole hotel has no aircon– Hotel room, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all included in the

registration fee (980 euros)

City Info

• Food and transportation– Mostly meat in the menu; very few veggies– The polish has their version of strong alcohol (very much like

vodka)– Cheap transportation (one bus ride=4 zloty; Zakopane bus=15

zloty)– Very cheap bread; big, thick, immortal pretzel for 1-2 zloty

• People– Only few people are fluent in English as opposed to what I ex-

pected– They pronounce ‘W’ with ‘V’– Polish dance is composed of a lot of jumping

Miscellaneous: Berlin Technical Trip

• Visited a friend working at the Technological University of Berlin (TUP)– Virtual Reality and Human Psychology

• Virtual reality goggles create an environment that induces emotions (e.g., standing on top of a high-rise building)

– EEG and Object cognition

Miscellaneous: Berlin Technical Trip

• Comments– Very large experiment room provided– Large room approximately has 27 cameras to detect human

movements (360 degrees)– Uses high-performance laptop (goal is to make EEG mobile)
