The 16 Lock Walk This hike is another one of our favorites, though it has probably changed more than any of the others over the past 10 or so years since we discovered it. A circular route, it takes us from the Nivernais canal up to the little feeder canal (“La Rigole”) that supplies water to the Nivernais, along the feeder canal to where it joins the Nivernais, and then past 16 locks in the final 4 km stretch. To reach the start of the hike we go west through Corbigny, a pretty little town with the region’s 2 nd best viennoiserie (puff pastry filled with chocolate and almond paste, dusted with powdered sugar. The best we’ve found is down the block from the vigneron from whom we buy Pommard en vrac, but that’s 90 minutes south and too far to go on a whim.) In Corbigny, we turn south to Sardy‐les‐Epiry and park at the edge of the canal, near the recycle bins, across the road from the 16 th lock. Heading across and then away from the canal, we take a short grassy track to the road that climbs up to the feeder canal. It’s a long, slow climb – but once we reach the top it’s all downhill back to the car, some 10 k later.
