The 17th

Century in the GardenA real haven of verdant tranquillity only 30 minutes south of Paris in the Regional Natural Park of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse, the Château de Saint-Jean de Beauregard is a choice destination for garden lovers from all over the world. Remarkably preser-ved, this is retaining all the charm and elegance of its classical 17th century environment. In a setting of earth and wood, the seven courtyards, park and French garden boast a variety of treasures, including a chapel, outbuil-dings, a vegetable garden, a dove-cote, an orangery, a water hole, an ice house, and a moat… everything we needed for life in the 17th century. This property may be a Historic Mo-nument, but at heart it is still a living, breathing family home, whose current owners are dedicated to keeping it alive and sharing with the public. Their passion for plants and gardens is on display in the exemplary resto-ration of the kitchen garden and the launch of one of the first ever Plant Fairs in 1984. Over the years, this has become one of the most famous horticultural events in France.

The Château A real «transparent» castle, this Château opens directly onto the surrounding countryside and boasts a truly exceptional pano-ramic view, earning it the title of «Beauregard». Inhabited all year round, it is fully furnished and houses a number of portraits and family heirlooms. From the summer room to the library and from the green room to the dining room, the remarkably well-pre-served interior decoration is the perfect illustration of an exquisitely refined and delicate way of life.

The pigeon-houseBoasting 4500 pigeonholes or ter-racotta nest boxes and 12 metre high double turntable ladder, this is the largest pigeon-house in the Ile-de-France region and the oldest building on the castle property. It provided eggs and meat, and also precious guano used to fertilize the kitchen garden.

The French flowering kitchen gardenThis kitchen garden, completely walled like most 17th century kitchen gardens, is one of the few castle kitchen gardens to have survived intact. A masterpiece of the art of the flowering kitchen garden, this garden of delights covers two hectares and houses a whole host of rare and forgotten flowers, fruit and vegetables in a series of beautiful, continually renewed compositions. Among the paths branching out from the central pond hide glasshouses for grapes, a fruit cellar and an astonishing grape storage chamber. This has officially been recognized as a Jardin Remarquable, and is a source of constant inspiration for many gardeners.
