THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Daughters:

Summer will be ending about the timeyou receive this message. I hope each ofyou and your families have had an interesting, restful and fun-filled vacation.I also hope you have each returned refreshed and ready to pick up your workin the Order with a spirit of RENEWALin all that you undertake in your fulfillingof our vows of "PRAYER AND SERVICE." May God bless each of you as youstart this winter's work.

National Council met and though theremay not have been the serenity and quietof Seabury House (and we all missedbeing there), we did accomplish muchand laid plans for a very productive andexciting Triennial Convention in 1976.Do plan to be in Minneapolis as a Delegate, Alternate, or Visitor. Each issue ofThe Royal Cross will be telling you moreof plans. Since we are in our 90th year, many of us in our Chapters and/orDioceses have had some special programsto honor this occasion.. I would like to tellyou with as few as possible statistics something of what has gone before us in these90 years. As you all know. The Order of The

Daughters of the King is an outgrowth ofone of the senior Bible classes for youngwomen of the Church of the HolySepulcher (now known as Church of theResurrection) in New York City, in theyear 1885. Other women's Bible classesin other parishes seeing the growth of theCleiss, the growth of the Sunday Schooland Parish of Holy Sepulcher, were attracted and convinced of the work. Theybecame members, adopting the Cross, theMotto and the Watchword. This led tothe adoption of the original constitutionwhich remained in force until 1891 — 61Chapters had been admitted, each yearthereafter 25 to 103 chapters were added,so that by 1905 the aggregate membershipwas 18,575 members. It must have givenMrs. Margaret Franklin, the Founder of

the Order, a much deserved tribute at thefirst Convention held in Baltimore, Maryland, October 25, 26 and 27, 1893, when103 Chapters had been added in that year. Not only did the Order grow in the

United States, but in Great Brittain,Ireland, Haiti, Danish West Indies, WestIndies, China (Shanghai and Hankow)and Honolulu. In 1891 a member of St.Luke's Chapter, Brooklyn, N. Y., carriedinformation about the Order to Canada. The Order grew very rapidly and in 1895the Canadian Chapters met and organizedthe Daughters of the King in Canada, and practically adopted the Constitutionof the Order in the United States. It isinteresting to note that though the membership was much larger in those earlyyears than now, that at no time has theChurch been without the Prayer andfinancial support of Chapters of TheDaughters of the King. Just as 18,575women were praying daily for the spreadof Christ's Kingdom, so today morewomen and men, boys and girls, are realizing Prayer is the resource to the sourceof life and strength. It is an inspiringthought that thousands of Daughters areuniting in Prayer to God each day, aswell as keeping the Rule of Service byputting forth a conscientious effort tobring some other women (and all peoples)nearer to the source of all spiritualstren^ and life. Just as this Bible classwatched for every opportuniiy of doingsomething for others, especially bringingwomen to Church to hear the Word ofGod, they were neighborly with strangers, helping them to use the Prayer Book, etc. This established the basis by which theyattracted the women to membership in theOrder. Yes, we all do this, but let's notlet any opportunity pass by in this yearof Evangelism and Renewal in the Chxurchto bring some woman or girl (man orboy) within the hearing of the Gospel ofJesus Christ; remembering we are closelyallied to The Brotherhood of St. Andrew,

Page 4: THE 1975 ROYALS CROSS...ROYALS CROSS THE ROYAL CROSS OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE ORDER OF DAUGHTERS OF THE KING Mrs. Thomas L. Prosser, Editor EDITORIAL OFFICE, 101 …

started out in Apostolic simplicity to spread the Kingdom of Christ—especially among women.A warm welcome to all new Chapters

and members. We welcome those whohave become active after being inactivefor various reasons. Our growth is steadyand as you see by the lists in Tlie RoyalCross, we are growing in all sections ofthe country — as is the Brotherhood ofSt. Andrew. Can this be the result ofpraying for and with each other????I am sure all of you are awaiting news

that Gladys Norris is back at her desk—not at this writing, but she is very anxiousto be able to go to the office at least ona part time basis very soon—^just cannotreally keep her down as she is doing somework at home until she is able to travelto the office. We are grateful to Gladys'husband for calling for the work and returning it to the office; also to our part-Ume assistant for doing extra hours during this emergency. Margaret Lennon haskept your orders moving out and underGladys' guidance, Margaret and I havetried to answer all mail. If you have notreceived an answer to any questions, please write us.

Faithfully, F.H.S.Hattie K. Bunting

Anglican Fellowship of PrayerThe "Playground of America" was

turned into the "Prayeiground ofAmerica" from April 30 - May 2, 1975when the Anglican Fellowship of Prayermet at Atlantic City. Following an Opening Evensong at the Church of theAscension, a Banquet was held at Haddon-Hall at which the Rt. Rev. Albert VanD^er, Bishop of New Jersey was host.High point was the thrilling presentationof "The Life of Christ in Song" by Mrs.Flora James. Bishop Van Duzer addressedthe Conference following an early Communion, and Workshops then met, bothmorning and afternoon. The Eucharist atthe Hotel at 5:00 P.M. was "StandingRoom Only," and that evening the Rt.Rev. David Leighton, Bishop of Marylandaddressed the Banquet and Helen Shoemaker and Polly Wiley gave a duet ofmemories as they turned the reins ofA.F.P. over to the Rev. Donald Hulstrand, new Executive Director. May 2nd broughtthree inspiring addresses by the Rt. Rev.James Montgomery, Bishop of Chicago—on the person of Jesus and His impacton us as we seek to follow Him. Timeschedules somewhat disrupted the Workshops that day, but the Conference closedwith an informal hour of fellowship andrefreshment at tea.

Because our President was responsiblefor the A.F.P. Booktable (and for guarding Helen Shoemaker's beautiful bronzesculpture of St. Michael, I representedthe Order at the Board meeting precedingthe Conference. Barbara Merrick

MEDITATION FOR ALL SAINTS DAY

For all the Saints who from their laborsrest,

Who Thee by faith before the worldconfessed.

Thy Name oh Jesus be forever blessed—Alleluia

O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine

Yet all are one in Thee for all are thine.Alleluia

As we approach All Saints Day whenwe again think of the many who nowabide in heaven, who once walked on thisearth, we remember those who servedtheir Lord in spite of all adversities. Weremember those who walked with Jesusand later died to prove their love. Weremember as we study the history of theChristian Church the many who gavetheir all so that the Christian Churchwould grow, that more people could readthe Bible, that more of all classes shouldknow of our Saviour and our Lord. Didyou ever stop to think of all those thatmake up our background, our hope, ourfaith, our knowledge? Today we have somuch to build up our Christian lives. Thisdid not happen overnight. This Christianfaith of ours has come to us down throughthe ages. It has smvived in spite of manywars and adversities.. This faith todayneeds everyone to fill his whole being withthe Love of Jesus Christ. It is only withthis Love that we can conquer the evilthat is filling our world. We must wantnothing else in our lives. If we have thisLove, if we know our Lord is within us,we have nothing to fear.We often think of the saints who have

been our companions on the walk throughthis world. We know all is well with them.Often we know they can not be far fromus. We know they are praying for us aswe struggle here below. We know thatwe can do more for our Lord and Saviourif we give all our thoughts, all our minds,to serving Him every minute of the day.Let us give special thanks for all that

has gone before and so fill our dailylives that we help others who will comeafter us. Let us thank our Heavenly Fatherfor all our blessings. Especially do wethank Him for robbing death of its sting.

robbing sin of its power, for making peacemore peaceful and joy more joyful andhope more secure. Amen

A Few Thoughts for our ConventionTheme I

"Lordj What Wilt Thou Have Me Do"How blessed we are to be members of

the Order of the Daughters of the King!As we sign letters and repeat the Motto,we constantly remind ourselves who isour King and that we seek to act "ForHis Sake."

About the time our Order was founded,a Unitarian minister in Boston (who laterbecame Chaplain to the United StatesSenate), wrote a piece for the "Lend-a-Hand Society." Edward Everett Hale isbetter remembered for his short novel"The Man Without a Country," but wecan easily recognize his piece as the sourcefrom which the explanation of our Mottowas adapted:"I am only one.But I still am one.I cannot do everythingBut still I can do something; And because I cannot do everythingI will not refuse to do the something

that I can do."

Was it not divine inspiration that led anearly member of the Order to adaptthese lines, shifting the emphasis fromindividual decision and effort (I will notrefuse to do the something that I can do)

to emphasis on the grace of God guidingand empowering us as we ask, "Lord, what wilt Thou have me do?"

Turn to page ten of our Handbook andcompare Edward Everett Hale's lines toours. Of our own will and strength, however fine and noble is our resolution to"do the something that I can do," ouregos are bound to get in the way until, like St. Paul, we cry, "For the good thatI would I do not; but the evil which Iwould not, that I do." We've all heardthe expression that Hell is paved withgood intentions. Our line reads, "WhatI ought to do, by the grace of God, I willdo." By the grace of God! We do needalways to be reminded of our need forHis grace; we do need always to askthat question, "Lord, what wilt Thouhave me do?"

Service, even loving service, performedfor its own sake quickly becomes debasedand self-centered, seeking thanks and approbation from those served. If, however,we know that we act "For His Sake," andif we continually ask Him, "Lord, whatwilt Thou have me do?" then we moveinto His world in joy, knowing His Lovesustains, empowers and motivates us. Bestof all, when our focus is on our King, weare saved from having to measure successor failure by worldly standards and areable to place our service at His feet inprayer, knowing that the Cross redeems, transforms and saves.

Barbara Merrick,Dev. Chr.

Shatter our fears and misgivings, andlet the light of truth so govern ourthoughts and guide our hands that withall the brotherhood of the Sons of God wemay build as our home that kingdomwhich belongs to thy Son, our Saviour,Jesus Christ. Amen

Lord, give us grace to live in Thy willalso.

Help us to master any fear, any desire, that prevents us from living in Thywill.

Into thy hands we commend our spirits.Amen

(Adapted from a prayer in Pton's "ForYou Departed")

On the Ninetieth Anniversary of our OrderAlmighty God our Lord and King,

we give hearty thanks that You did raisein Yom* Church The Order of the Daughters of the King; and that during theninety years now past you have put itinto the hearts of an ever increasing number of women and girls to offer themselvesfor the ministry of Prayer and Servicewithin this Order. May it be Your willto continue the Daughters of The King asan Order within Your Church, to blessthe work of its members with the graceof your Holy Spirit and, finally, by Yourmercy grant to ALL Daughters of theKing the joy of serving you in heaven. All this we ask for Jesus Christ's sake, whowith you and the Holy Spirit, lives andreigns, one God, world without end. Amen(Adapted from the 80th Anniversary Prayerwritten by the late Edward Leith Merrow,Priest and National Chaplain, 1965)

With Loving Remembrance of FatherMerrow and of all Daughters of the Kingwho have preceded us through the gatesof the larger life.We give thanks to you, O Lord our

God, for all your servants and witnessesof time past:Abraham, the father of believers,Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, and all the

Prayers for members of the Order:Lord, give us grace to die in thy will.

Prepare us for whatever place of condition awaits us.

Let us die true to those things we believeto be true.

And suffer us not thru any fear of deathto fall from Thee.

Prayers for our Life of Prayer and ServiceO God our Father, whose gift of faith

alone makes work fruitful and beautiful, enable us to see'Christ in all the hungry, sick, homeless and needy throughout theworld, that our service, sustained byprayer and the sacraments, is done for Hissake and thus made beautiful forThee. AmenO God of both the living and the dead,

we praise your holy Name for all yourservants who have finished their coursein faith (especially ); andwe pray that, encouraged by their examples and strengthened by dheir fellowship, we may be partakers with them ofthe inheritance of the saints in light; thruthe merits of your Son, Jesus Christ ourLord. Amen

[A Prayer inspired by Muggeridge's"Something Beautiful for God.")

O God, enlighten our hearts and mindsto know that;

"The hill outlined against Ae quiet skyEnclose the one world visible to me.

But on beyond them through the gloam-ing fly

Birds soaring home in utter certainty.'Tis nothing but the measure of my sight.

That far horizon—real only to me.As a horizon—etched against the lightOf the sweet evening's dying radiancy.

Death's dim horizon limits vision here. But they who pass it, pass out of sight.

Leaving our dar^ess, soaring homewardswhere

Other horizons lose themselves in light."Amen

The highlight of themeeting was having Pat Powers with us.She showed beautiful and informativeslides which gave us some idea of the workshe was involved in during the monthsshe spent in Brazil. We sensed the bondof friendship that exists between her andElizabeth Daniel. She helped us to understand more fully the enormous task thatconfronts Elizabeth and how well she is

responding in doing the work of the Lordin a foreign country — "For His Sake."

THE MESSENGER FOR DIRECTRESSESAND JUNIOR DAUGHTERS

Mrs. Elizabeth RhinesNational ChairmanJunior DivisionCleveland, Ohio

Dear Directresses and Junior Daughters:

When you read this there will be onlyone short year until Triennial, Sept. 5 thru10, 1976. Most of the plans were formulated at Council Meeting in Minneapolisin April. An interesting program has beenoutlined utilizing the time most advantageously so that delegates and alternateswill not only represent you in decisionmaking but will return to you with renewed spirit and vision to carry out ourmission. Each Directress is urged to attendthe Triennial and participate in the workshops. Because the dates of conventionwill prevent most Juniors from attending,an idea was bom which will make it possible for each chapter to be represented.

Banners carrying out the theme "Lord,What Will You Have Me Do?" areto be created by the girls themselves. Theywill be a very important part of the Jr.Workshop, after which time they will behung in the hotel lobby for the balanceof the convention Some may even beselected for the Exhibit Hall of GeneralConvention which follows. So girls—^puton your thinking caps, team up and beginyour entry. The one requirement is thatthey be rolled and inserted in mailingtubes. The style, color, size, etc. are youroptions. Each chapter Directress shouldhave already received specific instmctions. If you have not, please contact your Provincial Representative at once. We havebeen blessed to have the Rev. DouglasLorig of Brainard, Minn., consent to beour Workshop Leader. More about himin the next issue of The Royal Cross. AllJuniors able to attend will also be actdvel)involved. Directresses are asked to advisethe Provincial Representative at once whowill be planning to attend. Correspondence in the next few months will beheavy and we urge you to answerpromptly. Changes in report requirements, formats, contacts, etc., will bemade smoothly with your cooperation. And so with quickened pace we look forward to our third year of leadership andthe closer fellowship it will foster. One of the highlights of my summer

was a lovely afternoon spent with Pat

Powers and Elizabeth Daniel. They gaveus the latest information on the severalspecial projects in their work and theappreciation of the natives for theirefforts. Altho I had seen the slides before, the natural team work of Elizabethand Pat in their narrations made meaware of much I had missed previously.May God continue to use these womenas our hands and hearts across the miles.

Elizabeth G. Rhines, Chr.

A MEDITATIONSERVICE

What does this word mean to you?Consider the following three phrases:

1. Is it something you receive fromanother or some act you render toanother?

2. For what form of compensation isthis act performed?

3. What is the importance of ChristianService in our lives?

As Junior Daughters of the King arewe daily practicing Christian Service inour relations with those with whom wehave contact? Are we patient with otherswhen our own demands are great? Dowe listen to another when we wouldprefer to talk? Do we let the other persondo when we know we can do it better? These too, are forms of service!

LORD, SHOW ME THE WAY!

HUMILITY

Humility is perfect quietness of heart. It is to have no trouble. It is never tobe fretted, or vexed, or irritated, or sore,or disappointed.

It is to expect nothing, to wonder atnothing that is done to me, to feel nothingdone against me. It is to be at rest whennobody praises me, and when I amblamed or despised. It is to have a blessedhome in the Lord, where I can go in andshut the door, and kneel to my Father insecret, and am at peace as in a deep seaof calmness, when all around and aboveis trouble.
