2007 PRESEASON PROSPECTUSThe John Carroll football team hopes to build upon the momentum of

the final five games of the 2006 regular season in which it went 4-1,

posted three shutouts, and wound up ranked sixth in all of Division III in

yards allowed per game.

However, the Blue Streaks will also be mindful of avoiding the same

kind of slow start that hindered the 2006 regular season.

“We had a lot of unknowns to deal with last year,” said head coach

Regis Scafe. “We felt the talent existed, but our concern was how quickly

it would it come together. Obviously, it took us almost half the season.”

Once the talent blended, it offered a sign of things to come. Scafe will

welcome back seven starters on defense from a unit that allowed just over

200 yards per game, and five starters back from an offense that averaged

24 points per game over its final six contests.

“There are still some position battles that will be decided upon in

camp, but I feel we are in a much better place this year then we were at

this same time last year,” said Scafe. “I really like the potential we have.

If we can stay healthy, this could be the best team we’ve had in a number

of years.”

DEFENSE

Up front, senior nose guard and Derrick Bendau (104 career tackles)

anchors a unit that also features fellow seniors Nadhal Eadeh and Tony

Skrtic.

While the loss of All-OAC and all-region defensive tackle Manny

Andreoulakis is significant, the return of three-time letterwinner Bendau

and the emergence of Skrtic and junior Dane Schaffer could help minimize

the effect on the run defense.

Ryan Cantwell, a special teams standout from last season, will also

vie for increased playing time.

Eadeh (3.5 sacks) is the top returning pass rusher from a year ago, and

his effectiveness will get a boost from junior Ken Bevington, who

recorded two sacks in the 2006 season finale against Otterbein.

The linebacker position is arguably the deepest on the team. Second

team All-OAC selection Mike Nettling, who led the team with 68 tackles

a year ago, leads a unit that also features a pair of three-year letterwinners

in Luke Palmisano and Sean Harmon. This trio has combined for

nearly 200 tackles over the course of their collective careers.

The key word is depth at linebacker, as the Blue Streaks can turn to

emerging players such as senior Nick Bjelac, juniors Ben Adams and

Pat Ryan, and sophomore James Gilchrist to play major roles

throughout the season.

The secondary is also on solid footing with the return of first team All-

OAC junior safety Carlo Melaragno, as well as senior starters Matt

Siracusa and Matt McDonald. This trio accounted for 13 pass break-ups

and seven of John Carroll’s 11 interceptions in 2006.

For the backfield to thrive,

the Blue Streaks are counting

on the continued development

of some talented

underclassmen -- among them

juniors Dominique Fischer and

Douglas Mayer.

“We lost some important

pieces to the defense through

graduation, but we retained a

healthy part of the core,” said

Scafe. “There is enough

experience back that this unit

should be able to hit the

ground running and pick up

from where they left off last

year.”

OFFENSE

There are more questions that need answers on the offensive side of

the ball, where five starters return.

One of the questions is a good one to have, as two experienced signal

callers will compete for the quarterback job. Junior Mark Petruziello

and sophomore Rudy Kirbus were a combined 5-3 in starting assignments

throwing a combined 20 touchdowns and 1,777 yards.

The more probing questions are who will catch the passes, and who

will run the football.

Junior Peter Spachner is the most experienced and accomplished of

the wide receivers. A year ago, he tallied 271 yards and three touchdowns

on 22 catches -- second

only to first team All-OAC

performer Joseph Konrad

(who graduated in May).

primary target early in the

2006 campaign, while

fellow junior Vince

Doorhy emerged in the

second half. Sophomore

Scottie Williams made

nine catches in an

impressive rookie season.

Junior Jacob Ens, a former

high school quarterback,

will also be an asset to the

passing attack.

The Blue Streaks have

the luxury of three

letterwinning tight ends.

Junior Tim Cohn and

senior Chuck Sroka had

over 300 receiving yards between them, while sophomore Nick Spahar

was one of only five freshmen to letter a year ago.

The offensive line will be in a state of transition, as talented

underclassmen might be called upon to fill voids in three of the five spots.

Returning to anchor the line will be senior guard David Kaszar and

senior tackle Andy Matusek. Both are converts from other positions

(Kaszar a former tight end, Matusek a defensive lineman) who stepped

up large in 2006 and started the final nine games.

The rest of the picture is yet to be painted. Senior Chris Marhofer

has starting experience at the guard position, while fellow senior tackle

Michael Piovesan is the only other returning letterwinner.

Also unclear is the running back prognosis. Junior Matthew Harmon,

who started at 197 pounds for the JCU wrestling team last winter, returns

after platooning at fullback. The tailback job is wide open after three

seniors departed the program.

DEFENSE

Sophomore Kyle O’Laughlin is the most experienced kicker left on

the roster. He was 10-for-10 in extra points but has just one career field

goal to his credit.

Four-year punter and All-OAC selection Bill Goodrich leaves a void at

his position, and training camps will be needed to find his successor.

The return game has a number of able-bodied candidates to chose from,

most notably those who did the job last year -- Melaragno, Spachner and

Williams.

REGIS SCAFE

Head Coach

Regis Scafe, the 16th head coach in the proud history of John Carroll University football, will begin his

eighth season at the helm of the Blue Streaks program.

Appointed to the position in December of 1998, Scafe has posted seven consecutive winning seasons for

the Blue Streaks. In going 53-21 over those seven seasons, Scafe has helped John Carroll to extend its

current run of consecutive winning campaigns to a school record 19 years.

Since he began his tenure at John Carroll, Scafe has had 19 players earn All-American accolades, and

another 62 have been named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference teams, including five (Tom Rini, Matt

Payne, Jeff Lerner, Chris Cubero, Victor DeBoer and Doug Phillips) who have been named the OAC Player

of the Year at their respective positions.

Not only has Scafe maintained the winning tradition at John Carroll, but he has added to it as well. In

2002, the John Carroll football team reached the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III playoffs — the

first time a Blue Streaks team had ever reached a national final four in any sport. Along the way, JCU won

a school-record 12 games and captured the East Regional with victories over Hobart, Muhlenberg, and

Brockport State. For his efforts, Scafe was named Ohio Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year in 2002.

Scafe began his coaching career at St. Peter Chanel High School in Bedford, Ohio, where he joined the Chanel staff as assistant football and wrestling

coach. Scafe became Chanel’s head football coach, where he stayed for nine years. His most memorable season was in 1982, when the team had an 8-

2 record earning him Co-Coach of the Year accolades in the North Coast Conference.

In 1987, Scafe joined the collegiate ranks when he took the position as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator on the John Carroll staff

under Tony DeCarlo. In his seven years with the Blue Streaks, his defense was ranked in the top 20 nationally in total yards and/or points allowed four

times. During that stretch of time, Scafe had four All-Americans and 16 first team All-Ohio Athletic Conference defensive players. He also was part

of an Ohio Athletic Conference championship and NCAA Division III playoff appearance in 1989.

His last coaching assignment prior to his current one for JCU was in Berlin, Germany, at the American Bowl on May 28, 1994. John Carroll defeated

the Berlin Bears (a semi-professional team), 27-6, in a game played in what was formerly East Berlin. That 1994 JCU team would go on to win a share

of the Ohio Athletic Conference title, the last captured by the Blue Streaks.

Scafe went on to become the head coach at Case Western Reserve in 1994. Before his arrival, the football team had only won four games in two

seasons. Scafe turned around the Spartans into a .500 club in two of his final three years. His 1998 squad finished the year 5-5 and 1996 squad (5-5

record) was a tri-champion of the University Athletic Association. In return, Scafe and his staff were named UAA Coaching Staff of the Year in 1996.

In 12 seasons as a head coach (five at CWRU, seven at John Carroll), Scafe has compiled a career coaching record of 69-55.

Scafe graduated in 1971 with a B.S. degree in health and physical education from Case Western Reserve University, and in 1983, earned a Master’s

degree in physical education from Cleveland State. In addition, he garnered first team All-Presidents Athletic Conference honors as a defensive back for

the Spartans as a senior in 1970.

In addition to his duties as head football coach at John Carroll, Scafe

serves as an advisor to the JCU chapter of the Student-Athlete Advisory

Committee (SAAC), and has been instrumental in helping the annual Julie

Zajac Memorial Run each November.

For John Carroll University football’s fifth trip overseas, the destination in 2007 was Switzerland. Just as the case had been in Germany (1994),

Spain (1997), Italy (2000) and Ireland (2004), the central focus was to play a football game.

But the journey was about much, much more.

Long after the score of the game is forgotten, the memories of the John Carroll football team’s trip to Switzerland in late May of 2007 will linger on

for those who took part.

Whether it was a boat cruise on Lakes Thun

and Lake Brienz, or a trip to Wengen and a train

ride to Jungfraujoch (“Top of Europe”), the nine

days in Switzerland offered sights to be seen and

experiences to be shared.

Senior Luke Palmisano seemed to echo the

thoughts of many of his etammates.

“This experience did more for us off the field

than it did on it,” said Palmisano “Before we left,

we pretty much practiced, then hung out with

each other. Once we got to Switzerland, we all

were able to take in a once in a lifetime experience.

It’s hard to beat that for team bonding.”

Fellow senior Matt Siracusa felt much the same

way.

“There were a lot of great moments during that

trip to Switzerland, but one I’ll never forget was

climbing the mountain,” said Siracusa. “It was a

couple of thousand feet up, but it was completely

worth it. The view was unbelievable … and it was

definitely something you don’t see every day.”

Big Plays All Day Lead JCU Over Heidelberg In Home Opener

Sept. 16, 2006 - A career best three touchdown receptions from Joseph

Konrad, a career first 100-yard rushing day by Matt Divis, and a defensive

effort that yielded minus-25 yards net rushing all contributed to a 42-7

victory by the John Carroll football team in its home opener against

Heidelberg College.

Konrad finished with seven receptions for 127 yards and three

touchdowns. Divis led all runners with 108 yards and a touchdown on 12

carries. Four different JCU players — Petruziello, Spence, Matt Martin

and Rudy Kirbus — were a combined 15-24 passing for 256 yards with

three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Defensively, Nettling led all players with eight tackles, with Nick

Tomba and Matt Siracusa each coming up with interceptions. Heidelberg

had 25 rushing attempts, gaining 45 yards but losing 70 for the net total

of minus-25 yards.

Blue Streak Defense Grounds High Flying Marietta Offense

Oct. 14, 2006 - The John Carroll University football team used a

staunch defensive effort to ground a potent aerial attack at Don Drumm

Stadium in Marietta, Ohio, as the Blue Streaks snapped a three-game

slide with a 20-7 victory over the host Marietta College Pioneers.

John Carroll rolled up 376 yards of total offense while limiting Marietta

to 169, including just 63 in the opening half. Petruziello was 12-21 for

210 yards passing, throwing one touchdown to go along with one

interception. Konrad was the leading receiver, catching five passes for

138 yards and one touchdown. Divis was the leading ground gainer,

amassing 88 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

John Carroll Gets Defensive In Posting First Shutout

Victory Of 2006 Campaign

Oct. 21, 2006 - The John Carroll defense limited Muskingum to just

105 yards of total offense, but more importantly, held the Muskies off

the scoreboard as the Blue Streaks

cruised to a 38-0 victory over

Muskingum at McGonagha Stadium

in New Concord, Ohio.

The victory marked John Carroll’s

first shutout of the 2006 campaign,

and the first since blanking

Muskingum, 34-0, at Don Shula

Stadium on October 8, 2005. It was

also the Blue Streaks’ first road

shutout since November 9, 2002.

John Carroll finished the game with

367 yards of total offense by

amassing 268 through the air and 121

on the ground. Petruziello finished with 208 yards and three touchdowns

on 10-16 passing. Joseph Konrad (4-96, 1 TD), Peter Spachner (3-57, 2

TD) and Tim Cohn (3-55) were the main targets.

The JCU defense limited Muskingum to 105 yards on 53 offensive

plays, and average of 2.0 yards per play.

Lightning Delays Fail To Stop JCU From Posting

Second Consecutive Shutout Victory

Oct. 28, 2006 - A lightning delay prior to the start of the game and the

second half did little to deter the John Carroll Blue Streaks from posting

their second consecutive shutout victory as the hosts defeated visiting

Wilmington College, 35-0, at Don Shula Stadium.

The back-to-back shutouts were the first for John Carroll since blanking

Gannon (22-0) and Ohio Northern (52-0) to open the 1996 season.

In conditions that were difficult throughout the day (lightning, sleet,

rain and winds in excess of 35 mph), John Carroll resorted to playing a

high efficiency offense without making any mistakes. John Carroll rolled

up 452 yards of total offense, gaining

209 yards on the ground and 243

through the air. Mark Petruziello

finished the day with his first four-

touchdown effort, completing 13-19

for 234 yards. Joseph Konrad caught

seven passes for 132 yards and a

touchdown , while Matt Divis plowed

his way to 107 yards on 17 carries.

The defense was equally if not more

the story, as the Blue Streaks limited

the Quakers to one first down and 11

net yards of total offense for the game.

Wilmington gained just 22 yards passing and finished with negative 11

yards rushing on 26 attempts.

Streaks Post Third Shutout In Four Games To Close 2006 Season

Nov. 11, 2006 - The John Carroll Blue Streaks put just enough points

up on the scoreboard to post a 14-0 victory over Otterbein in the final

regular season game for both teams at Don Shula Stadium.

The Blue Streaks took control of the contest when Michael Nettling

forced a fumble on a punt return that led to the second and final touchdown

of the game.

John Carroll, which held Otterbein to 21 yards net rushing and 107

yards total offense, posted its third shutout in the last four games. The

last time John Carroll had three shutout victories over a four-game stretch

was all the way back in 1962, when the Blue Streaks closed out the

season with five consecutive shutouts.

Andrew Provost, who had a fumble recovery that set up the first

touchdown, led JCU with nine tackles.

On offense, Matt Divis had a career-high 111 yards on 19 carries to

lead the ground attack.

Although the Streaks had a run of winning seasons end at 19 consecutive

with their fifth loss of the year the previous week at Mount Union, they

extended a streak of non-losing seasons to 20 with their fifth win of the

season. Also extended was a 17-year run of top four finishes in the OAC.

JOHN CARROLL SEASON-BY-SEASON RESULTS


Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, SJ – President

Father Robert L. Niehoff, S.J., became the 24th president of John Carroll University on

August 22, 2005

Prior to his arrival at John Carroll, Father Niehoff was Associate Provost and Vice President

for Planning and Budget of the University of San Francisco. He has also worked in higher

education, non-profit organizations, and church and Jesuit community administration.

Father Niehoff joined the Society of Jesus in 1972 and completed a B.A. degree in philosophy,

two master’s degrees in theology, an MBA at the University of Washington, and a Ph.D. at

Gonzaga University located in Spokane, Washington. Since ordination in 1982, he has served

as: treasurer of the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley; associate treasurer of the Oregon

Province of the Society of Jesus; financial officer of the Archdiocese of Nassau, in the Bahamas;

financial analyst, co-director for Mission and Identity, and assistant to the vice president for

Student Life at Gonzaga University.

Joining USF in 1996 as associate dean in the School of Education, he became associate

provost in fall 2000. In January of 2002, he was given the additional title and duties of vice

president, planning and budget.

Father Niehoff is currently on the board of directors at Wheeling Jesuit University, where

he also serves on the board of trustees, the executive committee, and is chairperson of the

Academic and Student Affairs Committee. He is a member of the Academic Affairs and

Finance Committees of Saint Louis University’s board of trustees and a member of the

University Mission and Financial and Business Affairs Committees of Regis University’s

board of trustees. He also serves on the board and as chair of the Audit Committee of the

board of directors of the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology and serves on the Finance

Committee of the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus where he also chairs the Audit

Committee.

John Carroll is a Catholic and Jesuit University dedicated to developing women and menwith the knowledge and character to lead and to serve.

John Carroll University, founded in 1886, is a privately controlled, coeducational, Catholic and Jesuit university. to the need for social justice in response to current social pressures and problems.One of 28 colleges and universities operated in the United States by the Society of Jesus, John Carroll was founded as St. Ignatius College in 1886, and

has been in continuous operation as a degree-granting institution since that time. In 1923, the College was renamed John Carroll University, after the firstarchbishop of the Catholic Church in the United States. In 1935, it was moved from its original location on the west side of Cleveland to its present site

in University Heights, a suburb 10 miles east of downtown Cleveland.In 1968, the University made the transition from full-time male enrollment to a fully coeducational as women were admitted to the College of Arts and

Sciences for the first time. Today, John Carroll can boast over 3,500 full-time undergraduate students.Twenty major buildings inhabit the 60-acre campus. Graselli Tower, a landmark on Cleveland’s east side, is part of the administration building.

Other buildings include Graselli Library, the Bohannon Science Center, the Thomas P. O’Malley Center for Communication Arts, and the Boler Schoolof Business. The latest addition to campus is the Dolan Center for Science and Technology. Just four years old, the Dolan Center houses the

departments of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science, and psychology, and supports initiatives to improve K-12 educationand encourage technology start-ups in northeastern Ohio.

Athletic facilities begin with the Don Shula Stadium at Wasmer field, home to JCU football, soccer and track & field. In 2001, this outdoor facilitybegan to go under construction to transform it into the Don Shula Stadium, in honor of the John Carroll graduate who is the National Football League’s

all-time winningest head coach. The stadium has a new playing surface (AstroPlay brand artificial grass), and features brand new locker room facilities,grand-stands on both home and visitor sides, offices, a memoribilia room, and a press box for both football and baseball.

Other athletic facilities include Schweickert Field, home of the JCU baseball team; Bracken Outdoor Athletic Complex, home to the Blue Streaksoftball and tennis teams; the William H. Johnson Natatorium home of the Blue Streak swimming and diving squads; and the 2,500-seat Tony DeCarlo

Varsity Center, home to the JCU basketball, volleyball, and wrestling teams. The gymnasium was renovated during the early part of this decade andopened in time for the 2002-2003 winter sports season

The gymnasium is part of the the Student Center, which also houses the Ralph Vince Corbo Fitness Center.

ABOUT JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY


In all of college athletics, only three conferences are 100 years old.

Only three leagues had the vision and foresight to be organized before the

NCAA itself came into existence. The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)

is one of those three.

It began in 1902 with the major focus on the welfare of the student-

athlete. One hundred years later, that focus has never wavered. And

while maintaining the priority that “student” always comes before

“athlete,” the OAC charges into its next century on the heels of another

banner year athletically.

The OAC is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic

Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than

the Rose Bowl, the World Series and has survived two world wars, the

Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a

modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as

many as 23 members in the mid-1920s.

Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or

another have been members of the OAC.

Currently the Conference consists of 10 members, including Baldwin-

Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg College, John Carroll

University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum College,

Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College.

In the OAC’s first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference

champion was crowned — Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0

record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross

country, became a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily

added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating with

the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The Conference currently

sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s.

The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,100 to 4,500.

All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and

outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic

standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have

consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national

level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an

extension of the educational programs.

BLUE STREAK ALL-AMERICANS


John Carroll has extended its reach beyond the borders of colle-

giate football. The Jesuit University of Cleveland is making a

name for itself in the National Football League.

Former Blue Streak linebacker London Fletcher continues to

make a name for himself in the

NFL, recently signing a contract

to play for Hall of Fame coach

Joe Gibbs and the Washington

Redskins.

As the starting middle line-

backer for the St. Louis Rams,

Fletcher appeared in two Super

Bowls. He posted a team-high

nine tackles in a thrilling 23-16

victory over the Tennessee Ti-

tans in Super Bowl XXXIV.

He also made five tackles in

the Rams 20-17 loss to New En-

gland in Super Bowl XXXVI.Fletcher was a three-year

letterwinner for the Blue Streaks

(1995-97). He was a first team All-American selection in 1996 and

1997, as well as Football Gazette’s Division III Linebacker of the

Year in 1997. That year, Fletcher set a school record for tackles in

a season with 202.When Fletcher took to the field for Super Bowl XXIV, he became

the first John Carroll alumnus to play in an NFL championship

game in 40 years. The last Blue Streak to do so was Carl Taseff,

class of 1951, who played on the Baltimore Colts’ back-to-back

NFL Championship teams in 1958 and 1959.

Fletcher is part of a distinguished list of Blue Streaks who haveperformed in regular season pro competition.

Graham Armstrong (class of 1941) played for the Cleveland

Rams of the NFL in 1941 and 1945 (NFL champions that year), and

the Buffalo Bills of the AAFC in 1946-47. He played in 36 games

over four years, playing a variety of positions including placekicker.

He made 23 of his 27 extra points during his four-year pro career.Ed Ecker (class of 1944) began his career with the Chicago Bears

in 1947, then played for the Chicago Rockets of the AAFC in 1948.

After a year off in 1949, Ecker played with the Green Bay Packers in

1950-51 before concluding his career with the Washington

Redskins in 1952.

Tom Lahey (class of 1941) had a brief stint with the Chicago

Rockets of the AAFC in 1946 and 1947, playing end.

Burrell Shields (class of 1952) also played two seasons in the

NFL as a back, hooking on with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1954 and

the Baltimore Colts in 1955.

Don Shula (class of 1951) had a much bigger impact as a head

coach in the NFL, but his career as a player spanned seven sea-sons. He started with the Cleveland Browns in 1951-52, moved to

the Baltimore Colts in 1953-56, and concluded with Washington in

1957.

Gene Stringer (class of 1925) played for the original Cleveland

Bulldogs in 1925. Stringer was listed as playing five positions:

halfback, fullback, tackle, quarterback, and end.

Carl Taseff (class of 1951) had the most successful career in the

pro ranks of any Blue Streak up to this point. Originally a halfback,

Taseff made his name as a defensive back. He made 20 intercep-

tions over 11 pro seasons, starting with the Cleveland Browns in

1951. From 1953-61 he played with the powerhouse Baltimore Colts.

He wound up his career by playing with the Philadelphia Eagles in

1961 and Buffalo of the AFL in 1962.

Taseff’s banner season was 1958, when he made seven inter-

ceptions for the storied NFL champion Colts. He played and started

in the legendary 1958 NFL championship game when the Colts

edged the New York Giants in overtime.

In more recent years, quarterbacks from John Carroll have re-

ceived NFL and CFL attention. Larry Wanke (class of 1992) was

a 1991 draft choice for the New York Giants. P.J. Insana (class of

1995) signing a free agent contract with the British Columbia Lions

of the Canadian Football League in 1995.

Tom Arth (class of 2003) spent two seasons wit the Indianapolis

Colts as well as two spring seasons in NFL Europe with teams in

Scotland and Germany.

John Carroll’s impact in the NFL is not limited to players. Two

JCU graduates – Taseff and Gary Stevens – served at one time or

another on Shula’s staff with the Dolphins.

Another JCU grad, Dick Walker, was a member of the Pitts-burgh Steelers staff that won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1978

and 1979. He also was part of Woody Hayes’ staff at Ohio State

from 1969 to1976, appearing in five Rose Bowls and one Orange

Bowl. He was inducted into the JCU Hall of Fame in September of

2006.

Chuck Priefer, a 1962 graduate of John Carroll, is currently aspecial teams coach with the Detroit Lions. Included in his resume

are a collegiate championship as a member of Georgia Tech’s staff

in 1990, and a Super Bowl XXIX appearance with San Diego Charg-

ers.

Greg Roman, a former defensive lineman for the Blue Streaks,

spent several years with the Houston Texans before moving on tothe Baltimore Ravens after the 2005 season. Roman is a 1995 JCU

graduate.

Nick Caserio and Josh McDaniels, both of whom played for

JCU in the late 1990’s, have been part of three Super Bowl wins

with New England Patriots.

McDaniels was recently promoted and is now the youngestoffensive coordinator in the NFL, while Caserio is Director of Pro

Personal for the Patriots.

Three former Blue Streaks are employed by the world champion

Indianapolis Colts in administrative roles -- Chris Polian (VP of

Football Operations), Tom Telesco (Director of Player Personnel)

and David Caldwell (Western regional scout).

Media credentials are available by writing ChrisWenzler, Sports Information Director, John Carroll,University Heights, Ohio 44118 or calling the SportsInformation Office at (216) 397-4676. You can alsoemail at [email protected]. Credentials can bepicked up at the JCU Sports Information Office untilthe Friday before a home game, and at the TicketKiosk on the day of a game.

A school’s official campus radio station may usethe visiting phone line on a reciprocal basis or pay$50. Stations must restrict themselves to two personsin the press box and one on the field. Commercialstations must pay $50 and pay for activation of aphone line. All reservations must be made throughthe JCU Sports Information Office. Please plan inadvance (48-72 hours notice recommended).

Parking is available in the lot across BelvoirBoulevard from Shula Stadium, adjacent to the TonyDeCarlo Varsity Center. Limited reserved parkingwill be available for members of the media whorequest credentials prior to 5:00 p.m. on the Fridaybefore a Saturday home event.

The Press Box is located at the top of the home sidestands. The press box can be accessed by an elevator(entrance is at end of walkway between footballstadium and baseball bleachers) or walking up thestairs of the stadium bleachers. Phone lines andoutlets will be made available on a first-come firstserve basis, and all efforts will be made toaccommodate all requests for space.

Game Day Information including rosters, depthcharts, and game notes will be provided in the pressbox. Food and beverages are available throughoutthe game.

Statistics will be available in the press box athalftime. After the game, complete play by playand statistical summaries will be made available inthe press row area. Please allow at least 15 minutesfollowing the end of the game for statistical game tobe completed.

Telephones and a Fax Machine are available formedia use in the Athletic Department. Future plansare to include these items, as well as internet access,in the press box.

Postgame Interviews are to be conducted in thelocker room concourse or other designated area inthe stadium. The John Carroll locker room will beopen after a 10-minute cooling-off period (perNCAA regulations). The visiting team will determineits locker room policy. If requested, players andcoaches will be brought to the specified postgamepress conference site. A press conference stagingarea will be arranged if need arises.

Non-Game Day Interviews must be arrangedthrough the Sports Information Office. The best timeto reach Coach Scafe is weekday mornings from 9a.m. to noon. Players may be interviewed before orafter practice.

ABOUT DON SHULA STADIUM

In a ceremony held on campus on the 16th of June, 2001, John Carroll University announcedplans to begin construction on its new football facility, Don Shula Stadium at Wasmer Field.

On September 27, 2003, Don Shula Stadium was officially dedicated in front of a capacitycrowd in the 5,416-seat state-of-the-art facility.

Just as he was in 2001, the stadium’s namesake was on hand for the ceremony, which was heldduring the halftime of John Carroll’s 28-23 win over Ohio Northern as part of Homecomingweekend at JCU.

“Who would ever thought all those years ago that a football stadium would be named afterme,” said Shula after he was introduced during the halftime ceremony by Reverend EdwardGlynn, S.J., who was President of John Carroll University at the time.

Modest words indeed from Shula, who grew up in nearby Painesville, Ohio, and is a 1951graduate of John Carroll. Shula has often said the mental, physical and spiritual foundation ofhis John Carroll education were instrumental in helping him become the winningest coach inNFL history.

At the time the plans were unveiled for the construction of the future home for JCU football,soccer and track & field, Don Shula shared his feelings toward the project to the assembledcrowd.

“Needless to say, I am overwhelmed,” said Shula shortly after Father Glynn made the officialannouncement. “It is such an honor to have a stadium named after me. This is something I willalways have a great deal of respect for and pride in.”

The project began in earnest in the fall of 2001, as the old Wasmer Field bleachers were torndown on both sides. In time for the 2002 season, the visitors side was constructed, housing 1,400spectators. A temporary press box was also put in place to add functionality to the facility.

All the while, construction continued on the home side. Locker rooms, five coaches offices, aweight room, a training room and equipment storage areas were built on the ground floor. Accessto the home side dugout of Schweickert Field -- the baseball facility -- was also made available.

The main concourse houses the Shula Memorabilia Room as well as a fully-functioning con-cession stand.

The finishing touches were the upper levels, where the press box, coaches booths and a film-ing area were placed on top of the home side.

For Shula, this honor is a continuation of the promise a Jesuit education has fulfilled in hislife.

“When I look back and think about the things that have happened since 1947, the year that Ienrolled at John Carroll, and think about how my life has gone in different directions ... to befortunate enough to have the Jesuit education, graduate in four years, and to have the coaching Ihad on the field are opportunities I will always be very, very grateful for.”
