Principal s Message The Davallian Grow with Respect No. 10 30th July 2020 Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to Term 3. I trust you all had an enjoyable 2 weeks with your children and are keen to get back into the new term. We are all set at Davallia Primary School for yet another awesome term full of high quality teaching and learning all wrapped up in a heap of fun. There are so many things happening this term, so please keep your eyes on the live calendar on the website to keep up to date. Term 3 is Athleticsterm, so the students will be very active leading up to the Faction and Interschool Athletic Carnivals. Cross Country training is in full swing and I would encourage as many students as possible to continue/start coming along and having a run each morning from 8.20am. Phase 5 of the Roadmap is on hold! With the deferral of the implementation of Phase 5 until 15 th August 2020, we are left with a few restrictions on events we had hoped and planned to proceed with during Term 3. At present, restrictions will apply for the following events due to the 2m2 rule: 4 th August - Faction Cross Country – Student Only Event (parents not permitted to attend the site) 11 th August - Interschool Cross Country – Student Only Event (parents not permitted to attend the school site) Along with you, I am disappointed parents will not be able to attend the school site, however, I thank you for your understanding and respect of this decision. 15 th August 2020 is the next date the government will consider the implementation of Phase 5. Should Phase 5 be implemented, school operations will return to pre-Covid processes. Unfortunately, should Phase 4 be retained, the following school activities may/will be affected with the following expected actions: Week 5 - Book Week – parent access to the Book Fair will be rostered Week 5 - Open Night – will not proceed Week 7 - Faction athletics Carnival (Student Only Event) Week 10 - Interschool Athletics Carnival (may be a student only event) Week 10 - Lapathon (may be a student only event or postponed to Term 4) I will continue to keep you well informed during the course of this term and again, I thank you for your understanding in this regard. New phone number During the holidays, Davallia Primary School has been transitioned to a new phone system. As a result, we have been allocated a new phone number. Our new phone number is (08) 9246 8750. Parents are requested to store the new number in your phones. We have found a number of parents are not answering our calls as they are not aware of our new number. Its another Baby! Congratulations to former staff member Cindy Baker (nee Allen) who along with husband James are expecting their first child in early Jan 2021. We wish them all the best and look forward to meeting the new little Bakernext year. STEM Centre With the support of a Local Schools Community Grant of $18500, Davallia Primary School is developing a new STEM Centre for classes to access. This initiative is being led by Simon Haworth and Sunny Kendrick and the old mini lab in B Block is currently being transformed. This new facility will have standing work benches, new interactive technologies, robotics and will house all STEM resources for staff and students to access. As you can see in the picture, the room has been completely gutted and painted. The next stage will be the installation of new LED lighting, benches and storage. Although the picture below doesn’t look much at the moment, it will be great once it is completed towards the end of this term.

2021 Kindergarten Enrolments – Now closed Applications for our 2021 Kindergarten Program enrolments have now closed. It is expected we will commence 2021 with 60 Kindy students (3 groups). Later this year, we are looking forward to welcoming a number of new families to our school. Families who have been successful in applying for enrolment will be informed on Wednesday 5th August 2020.

How many students attend Davallia Primary School? Lots of parents have been asking this question recently. The answer is 541! Yes, we continue to grow and it is projected we will have a student enrolment of approximately 555 students for the commencement of 2021. Considering the current enrolments of neighbouring schools, only Carine PS has a larger student enrolment than Davallia PS, with an enrolment of 604 students. Fraction Facts Fractions are a fascinating part of everyday life. We apply fractions to things like time, cooking, and sharing, routinely. The relationship between good old fractions and their decimal and percentage equivalents are very interesting and worth exploring. Have you ever thought of a fraction as a division sum? A fraction makes a bit of sense when you view it in this way. One half, for example, is one divided by (in) two. If you do this (1 divided by 2) on a calculator, you will get the decimal version of the fraction. (0.5) Older children could benefit by adding these to their list of basic facts. They come in handy later as percentages too. E.g. 1/2 = 0.5 = 50% 1/4 = 0.25 = 25% 1/5 = 0.2 = 20% 1/10 = 0.1 = 10% It is interesting to observe the relationships between common fractions. Have you noticed how interesting 1/3, 1/6 and 1/9 are when they are expressed as decimals? (0.333, 0.166 and 0.111). And check out 1/7 and

see if you can commit it to memory. (.142857) Can you see a pattern? Do you know anything about π? This is expressed as 22/7. Do you notice something when you do this calculation? I think fractions are fascinating, don’t you agree?
