OUR SAINTS FOR THIS WEEK ST. BERNARD – ABBOT & DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH (August 20) St. Bernard (1090-1153) was born near Dijon and died in Clairvaux, France. He was of a noble family and received a careful education in his youth. With his father, brother and thirty noblemen he entered the Ben-edictine monastery of Citeaux. Two years later he led a group of monks to establish a house at Clairvaux, and became its abbot. The monastic rule which he perfected at Clairvaux became the model for 163 mon-asteries of the Cistercian reform. He was a theologian, poet, orator, and writer. He is sometimes consid-ered as a Father of the Church. Patron: beekeepers; bees; candle-makers; chandlers; wax-melters; wax
refiners; Gibraltar; Queens College, Cambridge.
ST. PIUS X – POPE (August 21) On June 2, 1835, Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto saw the light of earth at Riesi, Province of Treviso, in Venice; on August 20, 1914, he saw the light of heaven; and on May 29, 1954, he who had become the two hundred fifty-ninth pope was canonized St. Pius X. Two of the most outstanding accomplishments of this saintly Pope were the inauguration of the liturgical renewal and the restoration of frequent communion from childhood. He also waged an unwaver ing war against the heresy and evils of Modernism, gave great im-petus to biblical studies, and brought about the codification of Canon Law. His overriding concern was to renew all things in Christ.
QUEENSHIP OF MARY (August 22)
ST. ROSE OF LIMA (August 23) Historians remember St. Rose of Lima for her piety and chastity. Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru to Spanish colonists, and named Isabel Flores de Olivia, she was exceptionally beautiful. Her beauty was so great that she was nicknamed "Rose," a name that remains with her to this day. According to legend, a servant had a vision where her face turned into a rose. At her confirmation in 1597, she officially took the name of Rose. As a young woman, her beauty began to attract suitors. To deter these men, St. Rose marred her face, rubbing it with pepper to make it blister. She cropped her hair short. Her parents opposed her plan to take a vow of chastity. This resulted in a clash of wills, because her parents wanted her to marry. Her fa-ther eventually relented and gave her a room to herself. It was said she slept only two hours per night so
as to have more time for prayer. When she turned 20, she was permitted to join the Third Order of St. Dominic. She continued a life of extreme prayer, fasting and penance. On one occasion she burned her hands as a self-imposed act of penance. She was known to wear a heavy silver crown, with spikes that could pierce her flesh. The spikes reminded her of the Crown of Thorns. At one point, one of the spikes become so lodged in her skull that the crown was removed with great difficulty. Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1667 and Pope Clement X recognized her as a saint, canonizing her in 1671. St. Rose is the patroness of embroiderers, gardeners, florists, those who suffer ridicule for their piety, and people who suffer family problems.
SAINT BARTHOLOMEW (August 24) Saint Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus from ancient Jewish Israel. He has been identi-fied with Nathanael or Nathaniel, who appears in the Gospel of John as being introduced to Jesus by Philip (who would also become an apostle), Eusebius of Caesarea's Ecclesiastical History states that after the Ascension, Bartholomew went on a missionary tour to India, where he left behind a copy of the Gospel of Matthew. Other traditions record him as serving as a missionary in Ethiopia, Mesopotamia, Parthia, and Lycaonia. Popular traditions and legends say that Bartholomew preached the Gospel in India, then went to Greater Armenia. The account of Bartholomew being skinned alive is the most represented in works of art, and consequently Bartholomew is often shown with a large knife, holding his own skin.
ST. LOUIS IX (August 25) At his coronation as king of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed, as the father of his people and feudal lord of the King of Peace. Louis was devoted to his people, founding hos-pitals, visiting the sick, and like his patron Saint Francis, caring even for people with leprosy. He is one of the patrons of the Secular Franciscan Order. Louis united France—lords and townsfolk, peasants and priests and knights. Every day, Louis had 13 special guests from among the poor to eat with him, and a large number of poor were served meals near his palace. During Advent and Lent, all who presented
themselves were given a meal, and Louis often served them in person. After leading another crusade, he died on foreign soil at the age of 56. He was canonized 27 years later.

QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY On the 11th OF October 1954, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of the Queenship of Mary to be celebrated throughout the world, and commanded that on that day each year, the world should renew its consecration to her. In the future the Feast came to be celebrated on 22nd of August.
The purpose of the Feast is that all may recognize more clearly and venerate more devoutly the merciful and motherly sovereignty of her who bore God in her womb. On the day of her As-
sumption, Mary our Mother was solemnly crowned by Christ and received by the whole court of Heaven as Queen. What Christ has done in Heaven and the Church has done on our behalf we
should now do individually, that is, we should recognize Mary's Queenship, enthrone her in our homes, consecrate ourselves to her and, by this means, establish in our lives the reign of Mary Im-
maculate Queen of the Universe.
How to Enthrone Mary Immaculate Queen in Your Home and Consecrate Your Family to Her
A statue or picture (see previous page) may be blessed; If convenient, ask a priest to perform the ceremony, otherwise the head of the family can do it. Prepare her altar with flowers and candles,
giving her an honored place in your home where all will see her and often pray to her. Recite together kneeling: Act of Contrition; 3 Hail Marys; 3 Glorias; 3 times the invocation:
Mary Immaculate Queen: Triumph and Reign. followed by the
Act of Consecration O Mary Immaculate Queen, glorious Queen of the Universe, most powerful Virgin, merciful
Mother of a merciful God and refuge of sinners, we consecrate ourselves to thy Royal and Immaculate Heart. It is through thee that Jesus Christ our King has come into the world to save it.
It is also through thee that He is to reign over the world. In order to obtain this great benefit for ourselves and all mankind, we come to thy feet to consecrate to thee our persons, our lives, all
that we are, all that we have, all that we love. Keep us, enlighten us, dispose of us, reign over us. May all hearts and all homes willingly proclaim thee as their Immaculate Queen.
PRAYER O Mary Immaculate Queen, look down upon this distressed and suffering world. Thou knowest our misery and our weakness. O Thou who art our Mother, saving us in the hour of peril, have
compassion on us in these days of great and heavy trial. Jesus has confided to thee the treasure of His Grace, and through Thee He wills to grant us par-
don and mercy. In these hours of anguish, therefore, thy children come to Thee as their hope. We recognize thy Queenship and ardently desire thy triumph. We need a Mother and a Mother's Heart. Thou art for us the luminous dawn which dissipates our darkness and points out the way to life. In thy clemency obtain for us the courage and the confidence of which we have such need. Most Holy and Adorable Trinity, Thou Who didst crown with glory in Heaven the Blessed Virgin
Mary, Mother of the Savior, grant that all her children on earth may acknowledge her as their Sovereign Queen, that all hearts, homes, and nations may recognize her rights as Mother and as
Queen. Amen.
