phDIntegration of Structured

Risk Assessment into Clinical Practice

Though mental health professionals often receive considerable training in the use of structured approaches to assess violence risk, they rarely receive training in how to integrate the assessment results into clinical practice. Dr. Sarah Desmarais, co-author of the Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) risk assessment tool, will fill this gap with this presentation about using assessment tools to assist with treatment planning, decisions regarding supervision, and matching assessment results to appropriate interventions.

Dr. Desmarais trains and consults with mental health and criminal justice professionals worldwide on the implementation of START and other risk assessment approaches.

psYD Treatment of Violent

Delinquents with Psychopathic FeaturesIn every state, a small number of particularly

violent and intractable juvenile delinquents absorb a disproportionate amount of rehabilitation resources and account for an excessive number of violent crimes. Many of these juveniles show early indications of psychopathic features, and many continue to commit violent crimes into adulthood. This workshop will describe the Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center, an innovative approach to these youth that has proven successful at reducing violent recidivism, even among youth with significant psychopathic features.

Dr. Michael Caldwell is Co-founder of the Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center and works there as a Senior Staff Psychologist.
