2020 Hall of Fame InducteeGREGORY SNYDER
FormerLakotaWestbanddirector,GregorySnyder,isthe2020inducteeintotheOhioBandDirectorsHallofFame.Snyderisdirectorofbandsemeritus,Lakota West High School, West Chester, Ohio. He taught and conducted high schoolbandfor35years,teaching27yearsinLakota—9yearsatLakotaHighSchool and 18 years at Lakota West High School. Under his leadership, the Lakota/Lakota West instrumental program gained a national and international reputationforexcellence.HisconcertbandstouredEuropeandearnedanearly-unprecedented three invitations to the internationally-acclaimed Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (Chicago, Ill.). The Lakota West Marching Firebirdsearnedmorethan75grandchampionawardsandnumerousaccolades, including two invitations to perform in the iconic Tournament of Roses Parade (Pasadena, Calif.), and in the legendary Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade (New York, N.Y.). Prior to Lakota, Snyder taught eight years in the Clyde-Green Springs School District. Snyder retired in 2015.
From1988–2015,SnyderledtheLakota/LakotaWestHighSchoolbandstosuccess in performance and victory in competition. For two decades, Lakota/Lakota West students were awarded the most positions in OMEA All-State
Ensembleseachyear.NotonlydidtheLakotaWestprogramgrowtoanearly-unprecedentedsevenconcertbands,butthetopthreeensemblesperformedinstatecompetitioninclassesAAandA,earningsuperiorratingsannually.Underhistenure, the instrumental music program grew from 100 students in grades 9 - 12 to more than 800 district-wide.
SnyderisthefounderandconductoroftheNashvilleYouthWindEnsemble(NYWE).Hementorsbanddirectors,coachingtheminconductingandrehearsaltechniques.HeholdsclinicsforbandprogramsinNashvilleandacrosstheU.S. An adjunct professor for Bowling Green State University (BGSU), Bowling Green, Ohio, Snyder coaches and advisesBGSUmasterscandidatesaspartoftheMasterofMusicEducation—TeachingArtistrySpecialization.AtBelmont University, Nashville, Tenn., he is also an adjunct professor, teaching Brass Methods and supervising student teachers.
As a highly sought-after guest conductor and clinician, Snyder regularly travels the country. Recently, he guest-conducted the 2020 Mississippi State University Honor Band; the 2019 W.D. Packard Concert Band, a professional Northeast Ohioensemble;All-StatebandsfortheMiddleTennesseeSchoolBandandOrchestraAssociation(MTSBOA);theUniversity of Tennessee at Martin Honor Band; the Utah State Concert Band Festival; the East Tennessee Honor Band, and the Northern Kentucky Select Band.
Snyder is a consultant for KHS America. He serves as a clinician for VH1 Save the Music, conducting clinics in San Diego, Calif. and New Britain, Conn. He is also the Nashville clinician for Music Travel Consultants. Snyder recently served as a clinician for Mississippi State University; through Music & Arts in the Charleston County School District, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; The Fresno State University Sutherland Wind Festival, Fresno, Calif., and the Boise State Band Clinic Festival, Boise, Idaho. He also conducted clinics for Fayette County High School, Fayetteville, Ga.; Hoover High School, Hoover, Ala.; Jackson High School, Jackson, Ohio; South Forsythe Middle School, Cumming, Ga., and Williamson County(Tenn.)banddirectors.HeisaCentralStatesJudgesAssociationofAmerica(CSJA)adjudicator.CSJAprovidesselective,exclusively-trainedjudgesforcompetitivemusicalandvisualensemblesthroughouttheUnitedStates.HeisaMassachusettsInstrumentalChoral&ConductorsAssociationadjudicatorandaselect-judgefortheAlabamaBandmasters Association.
SnyderisanelectedmemberoftheexclusiveAmericanBandmastersAssociation.HewasawardedtheDistinguishedAlumni Award from Bowling Green State University in 2014. BrantKarrick(b.1960)joinedthefacultyofNorthernKentuckyUniversity in the fall of 2003 as Director of Bands. His prior teaching experience includes nine years at the University of Toledo and seven yearsofpublicschoolteachinginKentucky.AtNKU,headministerstheentirebandprogramincludingtheSymphonicWinds,theConcertBandandtheChamberWinds.Healsoteachesclassesinconducting,instrumentalmethods,marchingbandmethods,musictheoryandbandscoring and arranging. He is heavily involved with teacher preparation and is proud to have many former students serving as music educators andbanddirectorsinOhio,IndianaandKentucky.
InadditiontohisresponsibilitiesatNKU,Dr.Karrickremainsactiveasa guest conductor, adjudicator, clinician, composer, and music arranger. Hisbandcompositionshavebeenperformedaroundthecountry,inCanada, Europe, South Africa, South America, Japan and Australia.
In the fall of 1991, Karrick entered the Ph. D. program in music education at Louisiana State University, completing the degree in 1994. His prior education includes a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Louisville which he completed in 1982, and a Master of Arts in education from Western Kentucky University, completedin1984.Dr.Karrick’smusicallifehasbeeninfluencedbymanyindividuals.HestudiedtrumpetwithLeonRapier,musiceducationwithCorneliaYarborough,andconductingwithFrankWickes.HisprimarycompositionteacherswereDavidLivingston,SteveBeck,andCecilKarrick.Hisprofessionalaffiliationsinclude: NAFME, the Kentucky Music Educators Association, Phi Beta Mu, ASCAP, and the College Band DirectorsNationalAssociation.HeandhiswifeCarole,alsoabanddirector,resideinCovington,Kentucky.DuringleisuretimeKarrickenjoysgolfing,hiking,fishingandtraveling.
2020 OBDC Guest ClinicianAMANDA DRINKWATERDirector of Fine Arts, Lewisville Independent School District (TX)
Amanda Drinkwater serves as Director of Fine Arts for the Lewisville Independent School District. Lewisville ISD includes 61 campuses designatedintofivefeederpatterns:FlowerMound,Hebron,Lewisville,Marcus, and The Colony High Schools. LISD schools are located within 127squaremilesapproximatelytwenty-fivemilesNorthwestofDallas, Texas.
Ms. Drinkwater formerly served twenty-three years as a Texas music educator, with teaching opportunities at Leander High School (1996-2001), The Colony High School (2001-2003), and Marcus High School (2003-2018). She received her academic training at Louisiana State University and at the University of Kansas in Music Education and Instrumental Conducting, respectively.
Ms.Drinkwater’sconcertbandsconsistentlyearnedsuperiordivisionratings at the University Interscholastic League Concert & Sight Reading contests. Under her direction the MarcusWindSymphonywasnamedaTMEAHonorBandfinalistin2006,2008,2010,2012,and2014,andperformed as the TMEA 5A Honor Band at the 2015 TMEA Convention in San Antonio, Texas. The Marcus WindSymphonywasafeaturedensembleattheMidwestBandandOrchestraclinicin2007and2012andwasrecognizedfivetimesasaNationalWindBandHonorsfinalist.Ms.Drinkwater’smarchingensemblesearnedeleven consecutive trips to the 5A/6A Texas State UIL Marching Contest and were consistent Bands of America finalistsandrecipientsofvariouscaptionhonors.In2006,2008,2010,2012(5A),and2014(6A)theMarcusMarching Band earned the UIL Texas State Marching Championship, and in 2016, the group earned third place at the State Marching Band Contest. The program was awarded the John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Shield forexcellenceinmarchingbandperformanceandtheSudlerFlagforexcellenceinconcertbandperformancein2008 and 2014, respectively.
Ms.DrinkwaterwasnamedfivetimestoWho’s Who Among America’s Teachers,andisamemberoftheTexas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, and the American Bandmasters Association.ShehasbeentherecipientoftheMusicEducatorsNationalConference“ExcellenceinTeachingMusic”Award(2009),theBayardH.Friedman“Hero”AwardforcontributionstoMusicEducationinTexas(2011),andtheUILSponsorofExcellence(2015).SheresidesinHighlandVillage,TXwithhusbandRob,andis an active clinician and adjudicator.
