EVENT INTRODUCTION

We began this event by investigating what was on the minds of leading practitioners in HSE. We asked them “What‘s coming next, what will the safety culture of the future be like?”

These efforts contextualized past, present & future HSE practices & highlighted the ‘true‘ innovation that has occurred: Better understanding of the drivers that cause accidents, as well as management practices and institutional cultures that bring industry closer to the zero accident threshold.

The platform, developed with our advisory panel, attracted a global core of heavyweight speakers and a well-seasoned delegation. Discussions focused on HSE‘s vital role in management and its impact on both employees’ lives & communities hosting industry.

HSE Excellence Europe has now emerged as ‘the‘ platform for sharing knowledge & true innovation. Backed up by the palpable emotional impact experienced by attendees, ‘feeling it‘ has now become a must for the HSE professional to sharpen management practices necessary to bring industry closer to the zero accident threshold. The pressure is on for 2013. See you in Prague.

“Goodwill is decided by the thumb kept in“

6th Annual HSE Excellence Europe was the realization of 10 months of research, consensus building, planning and execution... in other words “Combat”.

While the pressure never stopped, I knew from the moment that our Chairman Andrew Sharman linked HSE to Rome‘s ancient gladiators, that the event was going to be

a spectacle. There was history, statistics, strategy, and there were tears.

At it‘s finish the crowd gave our HSE Gladiators a thumbs up... or for safety‘s sake - thumbs kept in!

INTERACTIVITY... INNOVATION... KNOWLEDGE

‘HSE in Bedsheet‘

“He was carrying me like a superman. I loved him so much. A few days before he was due to go offshore again, I wished he could stay home forever... Twenty seconds of human error has destroyed our lives forever. At the end of the day it‘s people who cause the accidents, because we are human.“

Emma Currie | British Actress | Managing Director of Acting Up | delivered a highly evocative portrayal of how deeply work related accidents and human error can cut into the wellbeing and self esteem of employees as well as the wider communities that they support.

Ms. Currie‘s portrayal of ‘Gail‘ the spouse of a recently injured and now paraplegic Offshore Rig ‘Roughneck‘, reminded the delegation that safety lapses have consequences far beyond the initial impact to the employee or the company‘s productivity.

‘My Life After a Fall from Height‘

Jason Anker“I am in the wheelchair because I did something which I knew was unsafe”, was definitely one of the most impactful statements that most of delegates have ever heard in their lives.

Mr.Ankerdeliveredhisfirsthandaccountof“AFallFromHeight”.Itwas a stern reminder, shared widely, to highlight the role employees have to play in their own safety. By his own account he destroyed a number of lives when he allowed ‘meeting a deadline‘ to jeapordize his health, well being, and young family.

‘The Safer the Better‘

Davide Scotti | HSE New Initiatives & Change Manager | Saipem | led discussion on instilling proper HSE leadership and its impact on company culture.

Together with the film ‘The Safer, The Better‘. Mr. Scotti was able to demonstrate the direct interconnection between HSE management processes and how company priorities and efforts are played out within the workforce.

Judith Hackitt | Chair | Health and Safety Executive (HSE UK) | convened the event with the opening keynote address: ‘Regulating Health and Safety across the broadest business landscape – Great Britain’s perspective‘. Ms. Hackitt contextualized the key focus of current HSE practice by walking the delegation through primary drivers and legislative developments in the UK.
