Good evening and welcome to tonight’s match against Adelaide United at ANZ Stadium. 2019 is a very exciting year fro the Wanderers with the completion of Bankwest Stadium and the new training facilities in Blacktown for the club’s Hyundai

A-League, Westfield W-League and Academy teams. Having worked with the club for the last two year’s as one of the PFA’s Player Development Managers, it has been fantastic to watch the way the club has grown and produced a number of talented

local players that you will see on the park tonight. I returned to the club this season as the U20s head coach and assistant of the Foxtel Y-League team and it was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. It is an honour to come back to the club and learn from people like Arthur Diles, Ian Crook and Markus Babbel to progress further as a coach. My time here at the club in 2014 was very memorable, we had a great bunch of players in the squad and it was a time where it was all new and fresh. I still talk to a lot

of those players and I have many fond memories of being player at the club. This season has been challenging for our Hyundai A-League squad but it has been great to watch the next generation come through the squad and get some minutes under their belts. If we can repeat our performance against Perth and have a bit of luck on our side there’s no doubt that we’ll be snapping up all three points at home! Come on you Wanderers! The Red & Black are back at home tonight for their second match this season against Adelaide United.

The Wanderers come into the match following a seven-goal thriller against Perth last Sunday night at HBF Park. Perth Glory staged a second half comeback to defeat the Wanderers 4-3, in what was arguably one of the games of the Hyundai A-League season. The result was a frustrating blow for the Wanderers, who had taken the lead late in the opening half through Kwame Yeboah.Yeboah, making his first start in the competition in over five years, teed up second half goals for Roly Bonevacia and Abraham Majok. Despite the finish, there are plenty of positives that Wanderers members and fans took out of the match.Fielding a squad with an average age of 23.1 re-affirmed the bright future and the ability of the next generation of Wanderers coming through the Academy system.Whilst, 11 of the 16 players selected for the match were either from Western Sydney or came through the Wanderers Academy system. The Reds come into the match after their four-match unbeaten run came to an end in Sydney.

Craig Goodwin's penalty was not enough to inspire a comeback as Adelaide United lost 2-1 to Sydney FC at Jubilee Stadium. The last time these two sides met was on Boxing Day last year with the match ending in a 2-2 draw. The Red & Black will tonight need to secure all three points for any hopes of a finals berth this Hyundai A-League season.

WARM

This Westfield W-League season has definitely been a season of 'what ifs' for the Red & Black. It's been the narrative of our season so far, having had a number of fantastic

performances but nothing to show for it. This Sunday, we travel to South Australia to face Adelaide United who are in red-hot form and in the line for their very first finals berth. We'll be coming off the back of a very frustrating finish against Sydney FC last Thursday which saw a second-half brace to Caitlin Foord secure a 3-0 victory over us in the Derby. We were close to taking the lead with Lo'eau LaBonta, having seen Bledsoe off her line, launched a long-distance strike from more than 30 metres out, but it was denied by her compatriot. Georgia Yeoman-Dale and Elizabeth Addo both had their chances from distance and close range but we were unlucky in front of the goal and struggled to break the duck. Moving forward to Sunday's match against Adelaide we will need to take our chances, score some goals and more importantly secure our first three points of the season. With finals now out of the question, now it's just our pride on the line.

The Socceroos reached the knock-out stage of the 2011 Asian Cup by defeating Bahrain 1-0 in the final group stage match on this day in 2011. Needing at least a point to finish in the top two of Group A, Australia's match against the Bahrainis was hard-fought, with player-of-the-match Mark Schwarzer saving a string of shots in the second half. The Socceroos' scorer was Mile Jedinak, with a strong strike from 20 metres out, scored towards the end of the first half. Australia eventually made its way to the final of the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar, losing to an extra time goal (0-1) in an epic 120 minute affair against Japan. It was Australia's second Asian Cup; after being defeated at the first knock-out stage game in 2007 (against Japan) the Socceroos secured the Championship title in 2015 at home in an unforgettable Asian Cup final, an extra-time winner against South Korea (2-1) sending most of the 76,000 crowd at ANZ Stadium into delirium.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHTTHE NEXT GENERATION OF RISING STARS HAVE BEEN COMING THROUGH THE WANDERERS RANKS

When the Red & Black took to the field last Sunday night against league leaders Perth Glory, the average age of

the players in the Wanderers squad was 23.1.

Despite the frustrating result against Perth, the match was a milestone moment for a number of youngsters from the Wanderers who had either graced the big stage for the very first time of their careers or made it their very own. It was also a symbol of the future of the club, with 11 out of the 16 players named in the squad either hailing from Western Sydney or coming through the Wanderers Academy system.Looking to develop the future of both Western Sydney Wanderers and football in NSW, the Wanderers Academy was formed in 2015 with teams from U13s all the way to senior level, with the aim of providing a seamless pathway from juniors to the Hyundai A-League.

Page 10: THE 92ND VS KIDS ARE ALRIGHT - Wanderland...The Reds come into the match after their four-match unbeaten run came to an end in Sydney. (Left to right), Roly Bonevacia concentrates

10

History makers, the Wanderers were the very first Sydney-based Hyundai A-League club to play in the PS4 National Premier League 2 competition and have made waves since their introduction.Last season alone, the clubs U20s, U15s and U13s were crowned Champions whilst the U18s lost out at the final hurdle. The Red & Black have also consistently dominated the Young Socceroos and have been unmatched in their state team selections. The Wanderers Foxtel Y-League team also finished their season at the top of their Conference table and took out the honours, being crowned the Champions of last season's Foxtel Y-League competition.

Fast forward four years since the inception of the Academy under the guidance of Wanderers Academy Technical Director Ian Crook, the Wanderers Academy has quickly become the breeding ground of the next generation of footballers from the country's heartland of football. This season in particular marks a very exciting time for the Red & Black with the first big crop of Academy graduates making their way into the senior squad. The likes of Nicholas Suman, Tass Mourdoukoutas, Tate Russell, Mark Tokich, Mathieu Cordier, John Roberts and Kosta Grozos have all had their call-ups to the first team and have not only had minutes, but impressed on their debuts.

But this isn't the only success story from the Wanderers Academy this season, with former graduate Keanu Baccus becoming a regular starting player for the first team.Baccus has consistently bossed the midfield and played with a confidence beyond his years, a bulldog in the Wanderers midfield.Similarly, Abraham Majok has come into his own and has been dangerous on all accounts, scoring his first Hyundai A-League goal this season against Perth Glory. On an international level, the Wanderers Academy were invited last year to participate in the Guangzhou International Championship and after some incredible performances, the club made it to the Semi Final against

Villarreal. A feat that no other Australian Academy side has matched and that was only the Academy's U15s side.Wanderers Hyundai A-League head coach Markus Babbel has continued to make the Academy his own and has prided himself on blooding in the next generation of Wanderers stars this season, giving members and fans the opportunity to see plenty of locals achieve their dreams. It has been a youth revolution of some sorts at the Wanderers this season and despite it's challenges so far, it's safe to say that the future is very bright for the Red & Black.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

18-year-old Tate Russell is a recent graduate from the Wanderers Academy having been part of the system since 2015. A defender with pace to burn, Russell was part of the Wanderers Foxtel Y-League Championship winning side and made his senior debut for the club in their most recent match against Victory.

After making his debut for the Reds in 2008, Michael Marrone joined Shanghai Shenzin from Melbourne City, before returning to the Reds in 2013. With versatility to play as a right or left-back, Marrone has become a consistent mainstay in Adelaide’s defence.

MATHIEU CORDER IS READY TO PROVE HIMSELF AFTER HIS RECENT PROMOTION TO THE HYUNDAI A-LEAGUE TEAM

CORDIER READY TO SHINE

The versatile defender has been part of the Wanderers Academy since 2015 and is on a scholarship contract for the remainder of the season before being promoted to a

senior contract next season. The West Pymble junior has been a stalwart in both the Wanderers Academy's Foxtel Y-League and National Premier League sides and has dominated Young Socceroos selections for a number of years. Wanderers supporters have already had a taste of what Cordier is capable of, having made his senior debut for the club during the Red & Black's FFA Cup campaign last year.

CORDIER READY TO SHINE

But the work starts now, insists the youngster who has his sights set on learning the most he can in the senior team environment. "I've been training with the first team for probably a month now and I have played in some of the pre-season friendly games, so I am just really grateful to finally get my first professional contract with the club," said Cordier. "In saying that though, the hard work starts now. This is the first step in the right direction but I know there's still a lot of work to do. I'm happy that I've got a secure future at the club."It's a big step up and the requirements of a professional footballer aren't easy but it's what I love and what I want to do, so I'm really looking forward to keep on doing that at the Wanderers."Obviously, I'm excited for the new training facility and the new stadium, and then looking forward to the rest of the Hyundai A-League season and the season to come.

Cordier training with the Wanderers

Foxtel Y-League team

"I just want to help the team in whatever way I can, make sure I'm training at my best and putting myself in content for the weekend's game."Cordier has already been on the bench in almost all of the Wanderers Hyundai A-League matches in January and it is only a matter of time until Cordier is thrown into the action.Having made his debut in the passionate Sydney Derby, there's no doubt that Cordier is primed and ready to go for whatever this season brings him.

THE WANDERERS WESTFIELD W-LEAGUE TEAM WILL BE BACK IN ACTION THIS SATURDAY IN THE CITY OF CHURCHES

PRIDE ON THE LINE

Travelling to Adelaide this Saturday, the Western Sydney Wanderers Westfield W-League team are still searching for

that elusive first win. The Wanderers went down 3-0 to local rivals Sydney FC last Thursday but head to the City of Churches hoping to spoil the Red's chances of a maiden finals appearance.

STORY BY JANAKAN SEEMAMPILLAI

The Red & Black were well and truly competitive in the first half against the Sky Blues with Elizabeth Addo and Georgia Yeoman-Dale looking very dangerous. Captain Servet Uzunlar was everywhere as the Wander Women took it up to their Sky Blue neighbours. But it was an all too familiar tale with three lapses in concentration contributing to Sydney's goals. The Wanderers defeated Adelaide twice last season, a pair of 2-1 wins helping the Red & Black finish ahead of United on the ladder. Striker Rosie Sutton netted an injury time winner in the first encounter at Marconi Stadium whilst Lee Falkon scored the decisive goal at Marden Sports Complex in the return match.

It is a vastly different Adelaide team this season though with the Reds in the hunt of a finals berth.Adelaide are fifth, level on points with fourth-placed Sydney FC despite last week's loss to Canberra United. Former Wanderer Ellie Carpenter's second-half goal proved the difference as Adelaide struggled to create clear-cut chances in the match. Despite, Adelaide pushing for an equaliser towards the end of the match, the side could not restore parity as their two-match winning streak came to a crashing end. Whilst pride is all the Red & Black have to play for in the remaining three games of the Westfield W-League season, Dan Barrett's team have shown plenty of that this year despite their very disappointing campaign.

A win in Adelaide would be no less than what the Wander Women deserve for their efforts this season and it promises to be a spirited encounter on Sunday afternoon in Adelaide.

It was a personal phone call from Markus Babbel that saw flyer Kwame Yeboah return home to Australia for the first time

since moving overseas at the age of 19.Yeboah had plenty of potential suitors in the Hyundai A-League when he decided he had enough of playing in Germany.

FROM GERMANY TO WESTERN SYDNEY

THE CALLTHAT LANDEDYEBOAH

But it was the personal touch from the Wanderers boss that brought Yeboah across the line. "I had some calls from agents, so for Markus to personally call me I wasn't really expecting that," explained Yeboah."For me to wear the Red & Black, it's a very good feeling and I feel very welcomed. "When I met everyone on the first day I felt very welcomed and I felt very welcomed when Markus called me in Germany with his dreams of the club and how he sees me integrating with the team."Looking back on his experiences in Germany, Yeboah believes the culture shock of being overseas at such a young age has helped define him not only as a player but also a person.

"When I first got to Europe, I was 19 year's old, a fresh boy from Queensland, and it was a massive culture shock. "When I went over in January, it was winter there, and there was a 30 degree change in temperature. "When I walked into the dressing room, all the boys were speaking German so you can put yourself into my shoes."There was also a big change for me in the training sense and all, all the exercises were in German and it was a different football approach. This was also a massive challenge for me. "You can't really explain your experiences overseas, it's a totally different world and it has opened up my eyes a lot."

Since arriving at the Red & Black, Yeboah only had a handful of training sessions under his belt before he was thrown into the midst of the action. His spark and ability to create chances have been second to none, scoring his first goal in the Wanderers epic seven-goal thriller against Perth Glory last Sunday. Having already been touted as one of the future legends of the Wanderers, Yeboah has his focus on making his mark at the club over the next few seasons. "My goal at the club is just to show everyone what I can do, everything that I've learnt over my five years of being away in Europe."Obviously with the team going as high and as good as we can."

On the week of my debut it was just a normal week at training as usual and towards the end of the week I saw my

name pop up more and more. I guess my suspicions were there and come game day, I was positive and my mindset completely switched. I was focused on what I had to do, my jobs and I had full confidence in myself. The boys had full confidence in me and it was just a few choice words from the older lads that set me up for a pretty good debut. First initial thoughts as soon as I was walking out was that it was insane, I couldn't believe it was happening and I wasn't really ready for it as I didn't expect it to happen. I blocked out everyone but when the crowd lifted I definitely felt it and it pushed me harder to go in for the next bit of action, the next ball and the next challenge. It didn't set in at the time and it still hasn't set in now that I have made my debut.

I was just focused on the game and I was just trying to do my bit for the team and get the ball into the back of he net. It was very overwhelming post-match as there were a lot of people congratulating me. It was very humbling just to see that support from everyone and I received some personal messages from fans that I've never received before so it was a very good feeling.

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC HOST CLINIC FOR 150 WANDERERS

Prior to the Wanderers match against Victory on Saturday night, Mitsubishi Electric hosted a community clinic at

ANZ Stadium.A free event, the Kids Kick-Start a Healthy New Year Coaching Clinic was designed to teach families the importance of a healthy lifestyle, with a focus on fresh foods and physical activity. The event saw approximately 150 children from Western Sydney take part in a one-hour coaching clinic with Hyundai A-League players and Wanderers community coaches. The clinic included basic ball skills, teamwork and gameplay. Following the coaching session, those in attendance were treated to a delicious Chicken Rice Bowl,

created and prepared by Mitsubishi Electric Australia Brand Ambassador and Celebrity Chef, Ed Halmagyi.Recipes from the BBQ were included in the Healthy Lifestyle Guide so families could recreate Ed’s summer-fresh dishes at home. Participants were treated to giveaways, including a free Mitsubishi Electric Australia Healthy Lifestyle Guide and a general admission ticket to the Wanderers game against Melbourne Victory. The longevity of the successful partnership between Mitsubishi Electric Australia and the Wanderers can be attributed to the strong alignment of their shared values, with Mitsubishi Electric taking great pride in the Company ’s continued support of the Western Sydney community.
