The doorbell rings. Mary stops reading and looks in thedirection of the front door. She is alarmed. She looks at theclock. 11:30.

    Someone starts knocking frantically.

Mary puts a bookmark in the Bible, leaves it, grabs aBASEBALL BAT and approaches the door cautiously.

    MARY (CONTD)Who is this?

She looks through the peep hole and sees Tobias. He looksintimidating.

    TOBIAS

    Its Tobias. Open up!

    MARY(pause)Go away!

    TOBIASWhos there? Lottie?

    MARYIts not Lottie! Go away!

    LOTTIEWhats wrong? Whos that?

    MARY(whispering)

Its that drug dealer fromdownstairs! The one with the uglyhair!

    13.

TOBIASWhat the hells wrong with her?

    LOTTIEShes kind of religious. She

    doesnt like you.

TOBIASFeelings mutual... Come on,please. Were being chased here.

    Lottie removes the chain.

    MARY(raises the bat)

No, Charlotte! Dont let them in!Ill scream! (screams)HELP!

Tobias pushes the bat out of his way, puts a hand over Marysmouth and pins her against the wall. He twists her arm andthe bat falls to the floor.

    TOBIASShh. Quiet now!

    CHARLIEAre we safe here?

RAPHThere is probably about 5% chanceof Siba deciding to raid randomflats. But hes not likely to do

it. People who live here arent theharmless type.

    TOBIASJust be quiet and wait.

LOTTIEI got a better idea. Lets playsome music. Raph?

    RAPH(hugs the boom boxtighter)

    No. I think thats stupid.

She stands up, plugs the boom box into a socket, gets a tapeand puts it in. Lotties music plays.

Lottie sits next to Charlie. Mary looks at her, hateful.

    LOTTIE (CONTD)(to Charlie)

So, youre the fifth one then?

Lottie puts her hand on Cahrlies lap in a friendly manner.

    CHARLIEFifth what?

    TOBIASOf the circle of five.

CHARLIEDoesnt it work with less than fivepeople?

TOBIASWell we know for sure it works withfive.

    RAPHWeve only done it once.

CHARLIEWho was the fifth? Her? (almostturning towards Mary)

    Mary.

TOBIASHell no, God forbid... The fifthone is... gone.

  • 7/30/2019 The Advantages of Being Colorblind

    19/28

RAPHHe had a condition calleddissociative fugue, which causesyou to wander off and adopt newidentities. One day he went awayand we never saw him again.

    CHARLIEIm sorry.

    TOBIASIts not your fault.

LOTTIEI gotta admit, Toby has found agood addition for the circle. Im ahuge fan of stand-up comedy!

    CHARLIE

    Im not that good really.

    LOTTIEOh, dont be modest.

    Mary disappears into the corridor.

CHARLIENo, really, Im not being modest.Anyway. What do you do?

    Mary reappears with the bat.

    LOTTIECe moi? Im studying law.

    RAPHAs recommended by Mephistopheles.

LOTTIELike youre a medic or atheologist.

RAPHSorry darling, philosophy makesatheists... and whores.

    Awkward silence.

CHARLIESo, whats with the Christmastrees? Do you guys still celebrate?

    18.

  • 7/30/2019 The Advantages of Being Colorblind

    20/28

    RAPHYeah, but not for religiousreasons.

    TOBIASIts more about tradition.

    RAPHAnd because: fuck politicalcorrectness.

TOBIASYeah, were being rebellious byhaving Christmas trees.

RAPHIt is better than what Siba does.

    CHARLIE

What the hell do you have in commonwith that guy?!

TOBIASMore than youd think. We used tobe friends once.

RAPHLike us, he sees certain... smallfaults in the direction this cityis taking. Were given freedom ofchoice but the options arecontrolled by the high levels...

LOTTIERaph, we dont live in a RayBradbury novel.

    RAPHBut were getting there, darling.

    LOTTIEDont call me...

RAPHHow did you feel when they rejectedyou from the Academy?

    LOTTIEThanks for reminding me.

    19.

  • 7/30/2019 The Advantages of Being Colorblind

    21/28

RAPHThe point is: you had a choice butyou didnt have a chance in thefirst place. Not unless you live onthe high levels.

TOBIAS(to Charlie)Its unofficial but its the law.And thats what Siba fightsagainst. And that were against.Thats what connects us and makesus different from the rest ofNewport.

    CHARLIEBut hes bad different. Andyoure...

TOBIASGood different? You say thatbecause you dont know us.

CHARLIEBut I feel like I do. I feel thesame way about whats going on inNewport.

    LOTTIE(smiles at him)

Then youre going to fit right in.

Mary goes into the corridor, towards the front door. The batis lying there.

Flashes of Lotties unconscious flirting with Charlie, exaggerated by Marys mind.

    Mary takes the bat.

TOBIASWere the free folk, Charlie. Wedont pretend to be perfect. Itswhat the high levels do. We dolittle things like decoratingChristmas trees. We follow the oldways of nature and magic. And wetryto be better people. We arelike that. Raph is a bit of a prickbut otherwise were different...like you.

The tape suddenly stops. Lottie stands up, changes it, thenwalks back and puts her hands on Charlies shoulders.

    20.

  • 7/30/2019 The Advantages of Being Colorblind

    22/28

Mary goes into a trance and dashes forward, raising the bat.

    MARYLeave him alone!

Mary hits Lottie over the head. Lottie falls to the ground

    unconscious.

    TOBIAS(falsetto)

    What have you done!

MARY(drops the bat, grabs herhead with both hands)

    What have I done?

    TOBIASWhat have you done!

    MARYWhat have I done...

Mary hesitates for a moment then takes the bat again.

    MARY (CONTD)(completely psychotic)

    Dont come near me!

CHARLIECalm down. Were not going to hurtyou.

    TOBIAS(to Raph)

I think shes still breathing. Raphfind me some plasters and ice.

    CHARLIE(to Mary)

Calm down and leave the bat.

MARYNo! I want them out of my flat!

Charlie steps forward. Mary steps back.

    Raph runs into the kitchen.

CHARLIEListen Im on your side. Im notgonna hurt you. Youre not gonnahurt me, are you?

    21.

    MARY(screams back at Charlie)

Mary swings the bat. Charlie dodges.

CHARLIEWoah! No! No! Sorry! Please, let go

    of the bat!

    MARY(starts crying)

You dont understand. I know you. Iknow you! Ive seen you in mydreams.

    Charlie advances.

    CHARLIEWhat?

MARYHaven you not dreamt of me?

    Pause...

Charlie suddenly slams the door shut and locks it, shakes hishead and walks away.

In the living room Tobias is holding a bag of ice on Lottiesforehead. Raph is holding her hand.

RAPHLottie? Lottie? Please wake up. Imsorry Lottie. Im so sorry. Pleasebe alright. (suddenly psychotic)Im gonna kill that bitch!
