AMBER CELEBRATES HER BIRTHDAY!
Since Amber came to us in 2004, herrole at The Sweater Venture hasgrown dramatically. Originally she wasonly a tiny homeless kitten to whomwe thought we were providingprotection. However, she quicklyshowed us she has a wide range ofskills. First, it was her “people skills.”Not only does she love all the attentionfrom all of you who come to see herdaily, but she quickly expanded thatrole and regularly steps to the door
to greet you as you enter the store. You have let her know howmuch you enjoy her presence by selecting her as one of theCapital Region’s “best-in-store-pets” and in doing so she hasbecome our ambassador to the community. She humbly thanksyou for the recognition. From there it was only a matter of time. Since fashion is thename of the game around here, her eye turned to color, cut andfabric. Everyone wanted her opinion on how it looked, how it fitand did it “make them look fat?” She demurely declines tocomment about such personal matters. Now Amber is offering you her weekly recommendations on newor special offerings as the seasons change. You can see someof those recommendations next to her photo in our store windowsor on our Facebook page. When you visit our Facebook page, inaddition to Amber’s specials, you will be invited to become a fanof The Sweater Venture. All eligible fans will be entered into amonthly drawing for prizes. This week I believe that she isrecommending one of our newest arrivals, the “magic skirt.”While all this acclaim does not appear to have gone to her head, she has been reminding us that her birthday is coming up andshe would prefer that it not pass unnoticed. So we arecelebrating on Saturday, April 23rd, and we invite you to join us.From 10am to 3pm we will be having refreshments, door prizesand several in-store specials (we can’t wait to see what thebirthday girl selects). Amber said she hopes we don’t make toomuch of a fuss over her, but she would appreciate any donationsto the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society. See you on the23rd!

SUPERFUND INCLUSION
GOOD NEWS FOR NASSAU
Letter to the Editor: For decades, residents of Nassau andsurrounding communities have lived in a toxic shadow. A toxicwaste site on Mead Road containing more waste than what wasdiscovered in the infamous Love Canal has affected theenvironment, property and quality of life since the 1950s andcaused no small amount of concern for those living near the site.An attempt by New York State to address the toxic contaminationin the 1980s was widely regarded as a failure and is seen asleading to the unfortunate pollution of nearby Nassau Lake andtributaries of the lake.Through the more than five decades the toxic site has been withus, a dedicated group of residents and local elected officials havehelped raise awareness and demanded attention on the issue. That work has resulted in increased testing and monitoring aroundthe site, improvement of a dam at Nassau Lake and increasedpublic awareness of the issue. The grassroots efforts have also paid off with the recent majorannouncement by the federal government that the Loeffel sitehas been added to the Superfund list. Inclusion on the Superfundlist follows a visit earlier this year to the Loeffel site byCongressman Chris Gibson with Nassau Supervisor David Fleming,Nassau Highway Superintendent Fred McCagg and representativesof the County Legislature. The Superfund raises the profile of theclean-up needs of the site and can result in funding and otherresources being committed. The inclusion of the Loeffel site comes after years and years ofhard work by many dedicated residents and local officials andthose involved in the effort, including the resident groupUNCAGED, should be commended. That commitment will beneeded in the coming months, as efforts will need to be made toensure the federal agencies that control the Superfund do notlose focus on the need for a comprehensive clean-up of the toxiccontamination that has plagued Nassau for too long. The comingmonths will be crucial in ensuring the inclusion on the Superfundlist brings real and needed progress with the Loeffel site.~Alex Shannon, Legislator - Environmental Committee ChairmanEditor’s Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.
POESTENKILL HISTORICAL SOCIETY -
THE BARBERVILLE FALLS
Tom Hohman and Chuck Friday will be guest speakers at thePoestenkill Historical Society’s April 26th program on Harnessingthe Barberville Falls. Chuck has studied the Barberville Falls andwill be presenting a program on the history of the falls. Tom,who lives on Plank Road, has harnessed the power made fromthe falls with water turbines and uses the power it generates inboth his home and sawmill. The Hohman Water Turbine Projectis an example of how this form of power transmission operatestwo distinct applications along the Poestenkill Creek.By using anatural head of water provided by the Barberville Falls, Tom hasdesigned, installed and is operating a 12KW water turbine/generator system. Tom’s system uses the natural flow of theCreek to direct water power to a turbine, then reintroduces thewater back into the Creek in an eco-friendy manner. Tom andChuck’s program will be held in the Poestenkill Town Hall [RT351}at 7PM, April 26th.All our programs are open to the public andare free. Refreshments will be provided. For information, contact Pat at 366-3986 orWWW.Townofpoestenkillny.org/Town historian for our upcomingevents. HAMMOND’S LETTER MISUNDERSTOOD
Letter to the Editor: In the March 24 Advertiser, Paul Miller wrotean extremely critical letter about Keith Hammond questioning adecision made by Judge Jacon. I read the letter twice and stillcould not understand what Paul Miller’s point was. If his intentwas to claim that Keith was opposed to the judge’s decision toappoint Mrs. Signoracci because she was not a Democrat insider,he is sadly mistaken. Judge Jacon did not pick her name out ofthe air. Bob Signoracci was a long time Democratic Mayor of Cohoeswith a great deal of influence within the Democratic party. Youobviously missed the point of Keith Hammond’s letter. Keith waspointing out the fact that it was a political appointment. Insteadof appointing someone who has spent their life working to improvethe quality of life in Rensselaer County, through volunteer workand a career in public service, the appointment went to someonewho has political connections in Albany. In his letter, Paul neveronce told us why he believed Judge Jacon’s decision was the rightone. He resorted to name calling, saying that Keith was un-American and compared him to Hitler because he did not agreewith Judge Jacons decision. Our constitution allows us to disagreewith our representation. Do you really think Hitler would haveallowed Keith to disagree with his policies? Being able to disagreewith our elected officials is what makes our country great. You should applaud Keith for speaking out. Do you really think itis easy to criticize your own political party? Keith has a right to hisown opinion just as you do. I have no sympathy for the DemocraticParty, as I am a registered Working Party, but I did understandthe point Keith was trying to make in his letter.~Erika Buchholz - Averill ParkEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

SCHODACK PLANNING AND
DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION
Most folks who live in Schodack know and appreciate the factthat we live in a beautiful town which is: rural in nature, yeteasily accessible to cities, towns, and needed services. However,as much as we would like to be able to maintain and protect the“rural character” of our community, as citizens, we often feelpowerless to affect the town’s policies in this area. This is themain reason I joined the Schodack Planning and DevelopmentAssociation (SPDA) approximately five years ago. This Associationis an advocacy group dedicated to: encouraging smart planningfor sustainable development, and raising the awareness ofresidents as to how they can participate in Town planningprocesses. Our main goal is focused on the implementation of a visionarycomprehensive plan with the involvement all the key stakeholdergroups. We believe that maintaining a healthy tax base as wellas the character of Schodack is possible if the Town explorescreative strategies for reducing sprawl & other developmenttrends which could destroy the town’s natural and historicresources and other positive characteristics. We believe the Towncan achieve these goals by taking advantage of the expertise ofits citizenry and the resource of State and County government. Some of our accomplishments have included:The Future of the Town of Schodack: Perspectives onGrowth and Development – This Report was developed withthe input of more than 120 residents. We presented it to thePlanning Board in Dec. 2007 with recommendations for action. One recommendation was the need for a Town ComprehensivePlan, which the Town now has.Commercial Design Guidelines Manual - In 2009, workingwith the Town, the Association helped develop this manual. Theneed for design standards was another recommendation in our2007 report. Three SPDA members served on the TownCommittee that developed the proposed standards.Community Forums - We have organized public forums on:“Town’s Drinking Water Resource”; “Schodack Town History”,“Schodack’s Farmland Forum” and “Strategies for Planning andDevelopment in the Future”. We also sponsor “Meet theCandidate” nights prior to local elections.Want to learn more about our Association, call me at 477-9574in the evenings or on the weekends. Our next meeting will beheld at the Nassau Free Library on Church Street on 5/11 at6:30 P.M. ~Tony Kirby, President SPDA

It commem-orates the beginning of the Civil Warjust 150 years ago, and it will beraffled at Market Day, on Poestenkill’sTown Green on April 30th.Some of the quilt squares are printedwith battles and dates; others withsongs sung by the soldiers, and thedominant theme is the Lincolnpattern. Judy’s daughter, ChristinaGordon, helped her design the quilt, and when both the handsome backand front were pieced, Judy’s friends Betty, Kitty, and Vernahelped her “tie it off”. The result is a beautiful 48" x 72" heirloom.Judy’s raffle table also includes her wonderful Theme Baskets. Please join us for our traditional Market Day, on April 30th,from 9am to 1pm. And also celebrate the Library’s ten years inits present home at an Open House. Everyone is invited.

SCHODACK DINER
As we near our one year anniversary on April 26, 2011, all of us at the Schodack
Diner would like to sincerely thank our customers for supporting us this past year!
After 35 years in the restaurant business and briefly considering retirement, we
decided to have a go at another restaurant featuring a large varied menu with
homemade specialties in addition to classic diner fare. After hearing the demands
of numerous area residents and seeing a genuine need for a family friendly casual
restaurant with great homemade food at affordable prices, the seeds for the
Schodack Diner were planted. Because of our hard work, dedication, and constant
attention to customer feedback, our business has become an area landmark for it’s
superb quality, immense variety, and prompt friendly service. With dozens of options
from American diner classics like salad platters, steaks, burgers, sandwiches, chops,
and cherry pie to authentic Greek specialties like gyros, moussaka, spanakopita,
pastichio, and baklava, there’s something for everyone. This spacious diner offers
two large dining areas with comfortable seating and a laid back atmosphere.
Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails, or private parties up to 100, the
Schodack Diner is perfect for any occasion.
Where Can You Find Great Homemade Food at Affordable Prices? At the Schodack Diner, of course!
