The North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) brought a buzz to Hungerford Corn Exchange on Saturday with
its Bountiful Landscape Market.The celebrations marked 40 years since the area’s
designation as one of Britain’s fi nest landscapes.A wood carver, stonemason and blacksmith showed
off their skills on the High Street. Inside, children and adults played Find the Lost Sheep, watched a live beehive, ground corn, built Stonehenge, tried local cakes and honey, sowed seeds, bought windmill-ground fl our and bread, tea and plants, entered the raffl e with prizes of local produce, and learnt more about the area, its landscape, history, wildlife and walks. -Henry Oliver

Aldbourne Band is now ranked in the top 50 Brass Bands in the World, and that’s offi cial! This is fi rst time in the Band’s 152 year history that it has achieved this. The rankings are done by
the well respected ‘ 4BarsRest’ who have been following Aldbourne’s rise to success very closely over the past year. And what a year it has been!
At the recent, well attended, AGM held in Aldbourne Memorial Hall, chairman James Sheppard said, “We have had a tremendously exciting and successful year, where everyone has worked incredibly hard. The fruits of that sustained effort are now showing – we are the current National Champions of the First Section. We were awarded fi rst place in the Senior Cup Spring Festival at Blackpool which is part of the British Open Qualifi er, at which Richard Hughes was also awarded Best Soloist. We were invited to the All England Masters International at which we accredited ourselves by beating several higher ranked bands, and have been invited back for next year’s contest. The Training Band has nearly completed its fi rst year and has successfully played at several venues under conductor Janet Rowe. The Friends of Aldbourne Band continue to raise much needed funds for instruments and music. Thanks must also go to our musical director – David Johnson – for his belief in Aldbourne and for taking us on this journey.’
The Band are looking forward to welcoming in the summer at their annual Proms Concert held at 4pm on Sunday 5th August on the Green in Aldbourne....or in the church if wet! All comers are welcome and Friends of Aldbourne Band will be manning the tea and homemade cake stall, and the Prize raffl e has great wins including £100 cash, an Ipod docking station and a lunch for 4 at the Bell at Ramsbury along with many more.
David (Grandad) Johnson is looking forward to a celebration of a different type this August after the Proms– he is marrying a fellow member of the Band – Susan Lewis- at Oxford Town Hall. No surprises about which band will be playing at the Reception...Aldbourne of course!

COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT DELAYEDHungerford’s John O’Gaunt Community Technology College expansion plans have received a set-back through lack of funding and the project is on hold until 2013/14 fi nancial year. The school is planning a music, drama, learning resource centre and sixth form facilities.THERE’S A RUN AFOOTPlans are under way for a Hungerford run as part of HADCAF. Cr Benneyworth told the Hungerford Town Council’s recreation, amenities and war memorials committee hat the run would receive publicity.
CHAMBER TO HELP WITH CARNIVALHungerford chamber of Commerce is expected to take over running Hungerford’s annual carnival.Hungerford Round Tble told a recent chamber meeting that Round Table no longer had the man-power or resources to organise and run the carni-val.Chamber chairman Nigel Perrin told the meeting that Neale Marney had agreed to chair a carnival committee comprising members of Round Table and the chamber.Concern has been expressed that the carnival dates may clash with the Marlborough Jazz Festival which drws many people from Hungerford.
CHURCH APPLICATION RECOMMENDEDHungerford Town council’s environment and planning committee on Monday recommended that there be no objection to an application to re-new planning permission for Our Lady of Lourdes church and 14 residential units. The committee voted 4/3 after discussion was held on the com-mittee’s original objection based on parking and the size and concentration of units.
PRESSURE FOR CROSSINGHungerford Town Council’s highways and trans-port committee will recommend that the council still press for a pedestrian crossing in Bridge Street near the war memorial.A recent traffi c and pedestrian survey found there was no basis for a crossing.
