October 2011
Dear Friends of The Advocates,
Your support provided over 30 distinct programs to 4,372 people last year. The impact of
your generosity is that nearly 100% of the people you supported reported a positive life
change as result of their contact with The Advocates. Due to your donations, a boy stopped
having nightmares and he and his mother for the first time feel safe. Due to your gifts, a 12
year old girl stopped being a bully, and a young woman who was sexual assaulted started
the emotional healing process. Your kindness educated, prevented, and supported so many.
Thank you.
Tricia Swartling Joy KasputysExecutive Director President

When I woke up that morning I didn’t remember what had happened. I was
at someone’s house, didn’t have my clothes on, I was terrified.
MY MOM bLAMED ME; she said I was a slut. Some of my friends didn’t want to talk to me. My friend Mary told me to go see you.
Thank you for helping me out and for not judging me.
I now know I was sexually assaulted, that it was not my fault, and that I will have to do some work to heal.

YOU SAVED MY LIfE; when I was sitting in my car in front of the cliff ready to drive off because I was pregnant and alone, my abusive husband had
left me for another woman, my family back home hated me for taking off and I
thought nobody cared about me . . . but for some reason your words stuck in my
mind. I could hear you telling me you cared; that there was hope after all. I am here
now, 8 months pregnant, in shelter, and thanks to you, I’m alive.

When I first arrived to the U.S., I was under the impression that
my family would support me, take care of me. but I was wrong.
They were abusive, took my money, and wouldn’t give me my documents. I am so glad I came to shelter
and had the chance to meet you all. You are now my family and
you have changed my life.

I made it . . . I am in shelter. I was so terrified
to leave him. Thank you for helping me develop
a safety plan. I do not know what the future will
hold for me, I just know that ThIS IS ThE bEGINNING Of A NEW LIfE.
“”
I felt guilty all this time for having allowed this to happen to my daughter. I
was supposed to help her, protect her, and I had failed. Thank you for teaching
me that I do not need to live in the past or in the future. What I have is the present. My daughter and I are doing better now and we have begun to heal.
