One of the biggest fears people have about artificial intelligence is that it will render their job obsolete and steal their livelihood. This is certainly not the case currently, and even looking to the future it seems fairly unlikely for the majority of people. In fact, according to PWC’s 2019 Economic Outlook report, there is a very real chance that ‘AI will create as many jobs as it displaces.’

If anything, the parts of your job that AI might steal away from you are the parts you most likely hate anyway - it has the ability to augment most boring working practices – searching through documents for crucial information, arranging data to make it more readable, and sorting information into things you should concentrate time and energy on vs. those you can ignore.

What’s more it can help you get the right job. TiG have collaborated with a UK-based health recruitment firm to implement AI technology. In this case AI is used to cleanse databases and quickly find people who fulfil the right criteria for a role. In addition, AI analyses data on people who have either accepted or rejected a new position, therefore narrowing down the criteria in the future and shortlisting candidates who are more likely to accept. It can then offer these shortlists to the recruitment consultants, and as a result their time time is freed up to concentrate on forming human connections with their prospects.

Will AI steal your job?

The successful organisations will be the ones that transform both technically and culturally, equipping their people with the skills and knowledge to become the best competitive asset they have. Human ingenuity is what will make the difference – AI alone isn’t enough. Clare Barclay, Chief Operating Officer, Microsoft UK.

Certainly, as the capabilities and usage of AI expand, the question of how to programme and deploy it in a way that is ethical, unbiased and inclusive is one that nearly every organisation is having to answer. Large organisations such as Microsoft are already working on the framework for this, severely limiting the aspirations of any robotic assassins from the future.

AI isn’t what you’ve seen in the movies – this isn’t The Terminator

Hasta la vista,

baby

AI is only able to do what we teach it, which at this stage is mostly administration type tasks (sorry Arnie). Through machine learning organisations can boost their productivity by enabling AI to do simple everyday tasks.

Some of these machine learning ‘bots’ are probably already working in your business and even in your home, even if you don’t realise it yet. For example, when you’re on your computer working on a big spreadsheet and get a tip for what you’re about to write on the next line. Or when you finish watching a show on Netflix and get given suggestions of what you might like to watch next. These are both examples of machine learning, spotting patterns of behaviour and trying to predict your next action.

Bots can make you live longer

There are multiple ways AI is already being used in the healthcare field. In one instance, AI is helping to speed up and streamline radiology diagnoses. Using its ability to analyse unstructured medical data (radiology images, blood tests, patient medical history) to give doctors better insight into a patient’s real-time needs. This in turn frees up doctors’ time to focus on the patient.

AI in Healthcare is an extremely exciting prospect. Used appropriately, there is no doubt AI will help medical professionals improve and verify the decisions they are making. To be clear though: this can never be about replacing staff. It should be about allowing them to maximise their skills, be more efficient, spend more time with patients and, ultimately, get better outcomes. Darren Atkins, CTO at East Suffolk & North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

There’s even a soft side to artificial intelligence being used in healthcare, which is being used in the care of dementia patients. PARO the seal, developed in Japan by automation engineers, has been found to reduce patient stress and stimulate interaction between patients and

caregivers. PARO can learn to behave in a way that the user prefers, and to respond to its new name. For example, if you stroke

it, PARO will remember your previous action and try to repeat that action to be stroked.

We’re not quite at the stage where a robot will come along and cook your dinner for you, but there are multiple stages along the food production process where AI is being implemented.

TiG collaborated with a wholesale poultry producer, showing how AI could be used throughout the manufacturing process to reduce food waste. This was achieved by using data from images and weight to inform the machines on the most efficient way to portion a chicken before it was packaged up for a range of supermarket product lines. Automatic systems are now able in seconds to collect hundreds of pieces of data on a single item and rapidly make an assessment about it. These systems can significantly reduce costs and cut out waste.

Online food delivery business Deliveroo has been one of Britain’s most successful startups since its launch in 2013. They use data and machine learning to enable real time operational monitoring, both to see and react quickly to problems that may arise, and predict and avoid these if possible.

The company’s VP of engineering Dan Webb says, Ever since Deliveroo was founded, the

use of data has been absolutely critical to ensuring that our customers, our riders and restaurants have the best possible experience on our platform.

Utilities businesses are facing number of challenges from ever-tightening regulation and pricing controls. In addition, the integration of renewable energy sources, and the need to upgrade an aging grid infrastructure, are combining to place unprecedented pressure on traditional operating models. Consequently, the sector finds itself moving towards a more data driven approach where the focus is on delivering customised energy management solutions as opposed to just access to gas or electricity. Within this space, the value of AI cannot be underestimated.

50% of UK utilities businesses are now using AI to some degree.

AI can keep the lights on

One of our most successful AI projects has been an assisted web chat function for our customer support agents. It uses natural language processing techniques to understand what the customer is asking for, and is then able to provide the answers they need – Centrica

AI could save the world

AI can be harnessed in a wide range of economic sectors and situations to contribute to managing environmental impacts and climate change. Some examples of application include: AI-infused clean distributed energy grids, precision agriculture, sustainable supply chains, environmental monitoring and enforcement, and enhanced weather and disaster prediction and response.

The application of AI could reduce worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 4% in 2030, an amount equivalent to 2.4 Gt CO2e – equivalent to the 2030 annual emissions of Australia, Canada and Japan combined.

OceanMind is a not-for-profit organisation that empowers enforcement and compliance to help governments and the seafood industry to protect the world’s fisheries, their CEO explains how they are using AI on page 12.

OceanMind CEO, Nick Wise – A big part of what we do is looking at the movement of fishing vessels around the world, monitoring the data we’re able to track from them. In the past, all this data had to be reviewed by a human and there was simply too much of it to manage. So, we trained a machine to understand some of the key knowledge among our employees. This meant it could perform an initial sift of the data before it was passed on to us humans. Based on what the AI filters, the teams can then spend their time looking only at information flagged as anomalous or important.

As we saw earlier, there’s no need to fear a terminator-style takeover any time soon, however we should be implementing rules for AI to follow along with the outcomes we want it to reach, if only to get the most out of the investment into new technology.

There is a clear link between an organisation’s full deployment of AI technologies and its ability to accelerate growth, improve productivity and retain a competitive edge. To make the most of this acceleration, businesses need to think about the impact they want to make with AI, as well as the problems they want it to solve.

Using AI, businesses can forge ahead on vital areas like productivity and business outcomes as well as on more culturally-led (but no less important) aspects such as fostering an ethos of active participation and continuous learning among employees. Establishing clear usage principles to ensure the technology’s benefits are experienced in their entirety, without bias and inclusivity by all, is an important place to start.

However an organisation is using AI technologies and whatever the steps they are taking to ensure they harness it effectively from a technical point of view, understanding the ethical implications of embedding and scaling the solution is now equally important.

We do the teaching, the machine does the learning

AI can put you in the driving seat

The TiG Data Analytics team has created business intelligence dashboards which put decision makers in the driving seat, giving them all the information they need in one place to enable quick decision making. We’ve done this for a wide range of businesses, from Private Equity firms to manufacturers.

In a more literal interpretation of the driving seat, the Renault F1 team uses AI to unlock the power of its data and make every second count.

Our cars have more than 200 sensors that collect over 50 billion data points, all of which are analysed to improve aerodynamics, performance and handling. To manage this, we have built an AI model that analyses this data, deals with normal feedback and highlights any anomalies, meaning our engineers can focus on the data points that matter and require attention. As a result, some work that used to be time consuming is now done in real-time. This is a massive productivity saving for us, particularly when our ROI is measured in tenths of seconds. – Pierre d’Imbleval, CIO, Renault F1 Team.

We should go this

way

The AI Guide to World Domination 1918

By using AI in business processes we can remove human bias in some areas of decision making. Psychologists identify the problematic area of human decision making as confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is the tendency

to search for, interpret, favour, and recall information in a way that confirms or strengthens one's prior personal beliefs or hypotheses. In business this can be dangerous, leading to poor decision making and the stagnation of progress. Being presented with unbiased information collated by AI means decision makers can see a more realistic picture of the business as it is, and the next steps that should be taken.

The more advanced a firm is in their AI journey, the better they are at tackling overall bias. When presented with the statement ‘We have the capability to identify bias in our organisation or industry when it is observed’ only 34% of businesses not using AI agreed, whereas 77% of those using advanced AI agreed. Of course, as we examined earlier, AI’s ability to present unbiased information relies on the humans in charge presenting it with unbiased information to start with.

AI can show you things you’re not looking for

We have to rewire how we think about leadership and what we think to run our organisations. What we did to get us here will not get us to the next level. We’re creating the road as we are mapping it. – Maureen Metcalf, Founder and CEO, Innovative Leadership Institute.

The AI Guide to World Domination 2120

As much as we’d like to think AI is a silver bullet to solve all business problems, AI does not have the capability to simply do it for you. Any AI process that is implemented is there to augment human decision making, not replace it.

A large number of organisations struggle with balancing their desire to introduce AI quickly and the need to establish a clear roadmap for where and how they do it. Consequently, many miss the vital step of actually identifying the precise business problem(s) AI is best equipped to solve and, thus, fail to experience the true value it can deliver.

If you don’t understand what you are trying to solve, you are carrying a hammer looking for a nail and AI is going to be of no real use to you.

Something all advanced business users of AI tend to have is a strong data strategy. 43% of business leaders agree that preparing usable data represents their biggest challenge to scaling AI.

But the effectiveness of AI has already been recognised. For example, Global AI investment in the financial sector topped $5.6 billion in 2019.

The next chapter for the UK’s financial institutions will involve highly personalised products and services throughout the customer journey, along with state-of-the-art fraud prevention and enhanced technical security. This progress will, primarily, be made possible by automation.

AI will do it all for you

The global AI market is expected to be worth up to $15.7 trillion by 2030 (PWC global artificial intelligence survey)

44% of leaders recognise AI is a skill that will help secure their future prospects.

More than half of UK organisations (56%) are now using AI to some degree.

Next steps...

There is an element of organisations looking over their shoulders and fearing they are missing out on something that will provide a massive competitive advantage – that if they are not engaged in AI, they are going to lose. – Robbie Stamp, CEO of management consultancy firm BIOSS.
