Charter 2005 – What is it?A.I.S.E.: A track history of voluntary initiatives improving the sustainability profile of the industry

Charter 2005:

• 11 Sustainability Procedures across the product life cycle; independent verification

• 10 Key Performance Indicators• Annual “A.I.S.E. Annual Sustainability Report”• On-pack logo allows companies to demonstrate commitment to

sustainability• A living scheme

Charter 2005 – Success

About 80% of the industry production committed (Dec. 2009):• 99 companies (59 manufacturers, 40 distributors)

• A total of 831 companies operating* in countries covered by theCharter, thereof 612 manufacturers (ca. 65% of A.I.S.E. membership)

Significant progress measured (2006-2008):• Chemicals covered by HERA + 10%• Use of poorly biodegradable organics - 13%• Energy consumed per tonne of production - 4%• CO2 emitted per tonne of production - 4%• Packaging per tonne of production - 9%• Products with at least two safe use icons + 22%

*'Operating' means a company owns a manufacturing facility or sales force or has a significant distribution network in that country.

Charter 2005 – FeedbackAn industry scheme well received by external stakeholders

• Regular consultations with external stakeholders at EU and national levels

• External verification and regular reporting appreciated

• Objectives fully in line with EU political developments (SCP/SIP* Action Plan)

Main suggestions received:• Inclusion of a “Product Dimension” enabling companies to give a

sustainability assurance for individual products

• Setting of equivalences vs ISO and certain other standards in order to avoid duplication between the Charter verification process and ISO and similar company audits

* SCP/SIP: Sustainable Consumption and Production/Sustainable Industrial Policy Action Plan by the European Commission

Charter review

Commitment from A.I.S.E. to regularly review the scheme based on feedback and political developments.

VisionThrough regular upgrades of the Charter, A.I.S.E. aims at constantly offering the most advanced sustainability assurance scheme for promotining best practices within the industry, using LCA and scientific data as a basis.

Charter 2010 UpgradeAims to cover even more completely both sustainable production and sustainable consumption:Charter Sustainability Procedures (CSPs):

• Slight revisions to some existing CSPs

• Addition of two new ones (internal KPI targets; product dimension)

• Equivalences vs ISO and certain other standards for some CSPs

Development of the “Product Dimension”:

• Household and I&I sector: Creation of an Advanced Sustainability Profile (ASP) per product category (or group)

Consumer/Customer information:

• Extension of the range of information recommended to promote sustainable consumption

Reporting:

• New KPI (%ge of ASP rated products)

• Some fine-tuning in the way to report certain current KPIs

Logo: An « upgraded » logo for products meeting all Charter 2010 criteria

Page 8: The A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning: Proposed ... · PDF fileThe A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning: Proposed 2010 upgrade ... • Colgate Palmolive ... whole life-cycle

Verification equivalences

• A modification to Charter verification in order to gain synergies/efficiencies

• New list provided showing which aspects of the Charter Sustainability Procedures are equivalent to ISO 9001, 14001/EMAS and 18001/OSHAS standards

• Factories audited under some or all of these standards can be treated as already verified for the Charter, in respect of the equivalent aspects

• Does not exempt Charter members from verification but removes duplication

Page 9: The A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning: Proposed ... · PDF fileThe A.I.S.E. Charter for Sustainable Cleaning: Proposed 2010 upgrade ... • Colgate Palmolive ... whole life-cycle

Advanced Sustainability Profile

• Based on Life-Cycle thinking

• Defined per product group:• Specific parameters to be proposed

• With a substantiation dossier

• And with consultation

• On parameters

• On timing

• Random verification

ASP: Example for householdlaundry detergents

• Starting point:Life Cycle Analysis =>

• Parameters selected for this product category:– Ressource efficiency– Environmental Safety Check– Consumer Information

1) Environmental Safety Check• Selected in this case due to « down the drain » aspect

(« water emissions »- see LCA)

• Objective is to assure environmental safety of every ingredient used in product

• Safety data drawn from multiple credible sources (HERA, DID, HAD, EU sources)

• Aligned with principles of REACH

• Sophisticated tool makeschecking easy

2) Resource Efficiency

Product must pass three criteria:

• Concentration(product dosage below specific target)

• Packaging efficiency (grams of packaging per use below specific target)

• Use of recycled materials(above a specific % target)

3) Consumer Information

Product must carry information on-pack to encourage sustainable consumption:
