remind us that God is Love and that Love is the Greatest Commandment.

Our sermon series, With God’s Son: Following our Rabbi through the Gospel of Matthew, consists of several
sub-series. The current sub-series, Jesus’ Last Week: Kingdom, Conflict, Crucifixion, will take us through
Matthew 20 - 27 and invite us to find ourselves in the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross. Today’s
sermon, Enthroned: From Palms to Thorns, is the sixth in the series. You will find an order of service
on Page 4 and sermon notes on Page 5.

Series Spiritual Practice: You are invited to read through the
Gospel of Matthew once a month for the next 12 months. This
will give us an opportunity to focus on the whole book while we
share the sermons based on passages in the book of Matthew at the same time.

Youth: Spring Events The spring is filled with opportunities for
our youth to be the hands and feet of God, to
grow in their faith and to celebrate God’s work
in their lives!
Today, April 9,
the youth will meet at the
Love and Care Ministries kitchen (233 Fannin)
at 4 p.m. to begin cooking and prepare to serve a
meal to those in need at 5 p.m. Students under
the age of 14 will not be allowed to cook, but
they may serve by handing out drinks and
helping clean up. When we finish serving and
cleaning up, we will drive the church vans back
to Aldersgate to eat and continue our time together. Our evening will conclude at 7:30 p.m., as normal.
The youth group will not meet on Easter Sunday (April 16). We will resume regular Sunday night
meetings (5-7:30 p.m.) on April 23.
This year, we will join the youth of St. Paul and First UMC for an 30 Hour Famine during April 28-
29, from 5 p.m. that Friday until 6 p.m. Saturday night. This event will raise funds for our neighbors in
other countries who struggling with hunger. The fundraiser will conclude with an overnight youth
event that begins with a dinner before we start our fast until the following day, when we will break the
fast with another dinner. (If any youth or volunteers have dietary issues, they are more than welcome to
participate without fasting.) The fundraising portion will begin on April 17, and if you would like to
make a donation, you can make the check out to Aldersgate Youth and put “30 Hour Famine” in the
memo line. If you would like additional
information about the 30 Hour Famine, you can
visit www.30hourfamine.org.
The youth will meet as regularly scheduled
on Sunday, April 30.
Our Senior Sunday event will take place on
May 21. If you are a senior in high school or
know of a senior who is a part of our Aldersgate
community, please contact Daniel Mathis at
[email protected] so preparations can
be made. Grace and Peace. — Daniel Mathis
Art Gallery: A Lasting Impression On Sunday, April 9, our main hallway has once again
transformed, as we welcome the art of McMurry alumnus
Rebecca Schneller. Aldersgate has the privilege of hosting
Rebecca’s exhibit titled, “A Lasting Impression.” For this
exhibit, Rebecca painted 12 portraits of influential
Christian leaders who left a lasting impression in the
church and the world. Rebecca was born in Fayetteville,
Arkansas, and later moved with her family to Abilene. She
graduated from McMurry with a bachelor of arts in studio
art and English in May 2015. While at McMurry, she was
involved in the Honors Program, Gamma Sigma social
club and Kappa Pi art club. In August 2016, she relocated
to East Texas to pursue a master of fine arts degree at
Stephen F. Austin State University. After graduation, Schneller plans to teach art at the
university level and continue to paint and exhibit her work.
Music: Children’s Choirs This year, the children’s choirs at Aldersgate continue to blossom in their presentations
under the direction of David Patterson. David has a gift for inspiring the children and has
provided some great opportunities for these young choir members to grow into their talents.
During Advent, 45 children presented a wonderful Christmas program with a powerful
message. They sang again in our worship
services on February 26, and today they play a
strong role in our Palm Sunday festivities.
The children’s choirs provide a great place
for the children to learn skills, grow in their
appreciation and confidence and feel valued as
they offer their gifts and talents. David enjoys
seeing the growth of the children, both in their
musical abilities but also in their love of music.
This, he says, is key to their continuing on and
evolving into a frequent “voice” in our
worship. — David Wallis
