THE OPENING // 5

My first day back in our beautiful Cape Town today after a magnificent trip to London and Berlin. We had the opportunity to manage a networking dinner in the beautiful Berlin. So what is happening in Europe? Of course Europe is just spectacular. The fashion, the architecture, the decked out food markets, the culture and the night life. You might ask - so what is South Africa missing? Except for German efficiency and a really complex public transport system I would say that we are not missing much. We might be a tad behind with the fashion “trends” as they call it but that is just because our seasons differ. On my flight back to Cape Town I rather asked myself what is Europe missing. The obvious is sunshine. But the one thing that I really missed was uniqueness. Yes the shopping was spectacular but still I miss our privately owned little boutique shops in Kloof street created by young and creative South African talent. I also could not find a decent cup of coffee anywhere. Everything is spectacular but I still feel that a lot of their projects really lack a creative South African mind, especially when it comes to special events and weddings. Don’t get me wrong, I will pack my bags in a second and go back to Europe tomorrow if given half a chance. However a week later I will want to return to my Cape Town. Our wonderful City that lacks nothing and where we can create and achieve anything our mind desires, because our market is well educated, sophisticated and creative. Herewith a few trends coming our way next summer from Europe: Leopard print is huge. Leopard sox, belts, ties, bow ties, head bands you name it.

THE OPENING Thirteenth Edition – July 2012

Snake skin is back again, believe it or not. In fact anything animal related is huge at the moment. Especially animal knits and jerseys. I had my eye on a beautiful jersey with a monkey print, everybody is wearing them. Believe it or not Shwe-shwe fabrics have taken the world by storm. All of us will be wearing fitted Madiba shirts next summer. I got a fabulous one on sale. Native American patterns are featuring everywhere. Anything natural and untouched is the way to go. Natural leather bags, shoes and belts as well as wooden and leather accessories are all over the place. The colours to look out for next summer are rusty reds, mustard yellow, seaweed green, kaki and navy - all still going strong. With all that being said, I am looking forward to see South Africa’s interpretation of this at this month’s Fashion Week in Cape Town. So herewith this month’s showcase of wonderful South African talent that created the most beautiful weddings and events to any continent’s desire. Please excuse me I have to go and soak up a bit of our Winter sun... Enjoy the read.

Kind Regards,

Johnny Hamman - Creative Director - The Aleit Group

How did you start at The Aleit Group?

At the time I heard from a friend that Aleit was looking for a driver and that the applicant must be a Christian, so I immediately thought I will get the job if I apply, because I am a Christian! It took a while for Aleit to get back to me (very unusual) but I went for an interview and just after two days Hans phoned to tell me that I had been appointed. I was so excited! What is the most enjoyable part of your job?

I enjoy it the most when I have to set the table and prepare for dinner guests at Aleit’s house or sometimes at weddings and events. I feel like part of the family! That part of my job I really like, because it makes me feel as if I am growing and learning new things in other divisions of the company too. Most memorable moment to date at The Aleit Group?

My most exciting time to this day was when I had to fly to Jo’burg last year to work at a few of the corporate year-ends. I have never been in an aeroplane before and I really enjoyed working at these massive events with the team. I will never forget it! I was a little nervous as the plane took off for the first time, but I was sitting close to Gustaaf who gave me a bit of alcohol. The alcohol helped me to relax a bit and I thought “This is nice, this is good”! (Big smile from Foster!) Tell us more about your family… I am originally from Malawi where my mother and

FOSTER KANSENGWAOriginally from Malawi, Foster, our ever faithful and soft spoken logistics manager joined The Aleit Group in 2009 and has never looked back. Anyone would be lucky to see all of the fantastic places he has seen and meet all of the interesting people he has met over these years! Foster is an integral part of The Aleit Group, always friendly, humble and genuine. He is an open, honest character and is always ready to jump in and lend a hand when needed. When Foster is not out and about driving around for the company he is happiest at home spending time with his wife Esther and their beautiful two year old son, Jireh.

three younger sisters live. My dad passed away when I was still in school. You are Aleit’s right hand man and “shadow”… tell us something about him that we don’t know!

(Foster laughs out loud). I think I know a lot of things about Aleit that other people don’t know! Like every morning when I see him at his house, the first thing he would ask is “Foster, which shoes should I wear today, the shiny ones or the matt ones? What colour laces do you think?” And I always say “You always look nice, Aleit!” Aleit also works a lot on his laptop when we drive and listens to jazz in the car, such as Harry Connick Jnr and Michael Bublé. He likes to ask me to buy curry at a specific place in Cape Town when we are there for meetings. Aleit loves curry food! What is your favourite food?

I love Chicken Roti’s and curry food. Aleit taught me all about Indian. What kind of music do you listen to?

I like to listen to international gospel music such as Michael W. Smith and Hillsongs. Do you have a hobby?

When I am not working I mostly attend church meetings or sometimes preaching in church on Sunday mornings. I also like to go to the park with my wife, Esther and my son, Jireh.

How did you meet?

A very long story, but to cut it short, I first met Kulani in Standard 5 and I knew from that moment he was going to be my hubby! We did go out and after remained friends and I always knew I could count on him any time. What I liked about him was his outmost respect for me. I also had a constant dream about him and decided to call him one day when we were both already working in the corporate world. After that it did not take long - we reunited and here we are married!

How did he propose?

Kulani requested permission to send his family representative to my family for introduction and proposed to them to make me his partner for life. We followed the traditional route and decided together with the families to have a white wedding where most of our families and friends can celebrate with us as we take the covenant in front of God. This was the biggest blessing.

How did you experience your wedding day?

I told myself that on the day, let what God has made be. There were signs of rain and as I laid in bed I said a prayer: if it rains, let it be what God wants and I will rejoice in that rain! If it doesn’t rain, it is still great and the ladies can show off their outfits and we can have the garden wedding we wanted! But then again wisdom has taught me it is not about what I want, it is about what God wants. It rained and it was the most beautiful and special day... out of the ordinary. I had my new best friend, Johnny, with me - he was calm and he knows his game so that also made me relax. Can you believe I did not see the reception décor – that is how much trust I had in Johnny that he will deliver and indeed he delivered.

How did you meet?

We grew up together, Rudolph is my brother`s best friend and we spent most of our days together as children. But something happened in high school and the rest is history!

How did he propose?

Rudolph had set a romantic dinner for two in his Pink Lady orchards on his farm and caught me totally by surprise as it was supposed to be just another Tuesday afternoon. With lanterns in the apple trees, rose petals everywhere and champagne on ice… he went down on one knee, took out the small box and asked me if he can have me by his side for the rest of our lives.

How did you experience your wedding day?

Breathtakingly beautiful!! It was so relaxed and the mood was perfect with the fires and the fairy lights outside in the amazing oak forest. Everything was perfect!

Your best moment of the day?

When we saw each other the first time that day. Sooo happy!!

Something nice about us.

The fact that we did not have to worry about anything, not even confetti! The service is above excellent!

NICOLETTE & ANDRZEJWEBERSBURG WINE ESTATE

How did you meet?

Nicolette: We were both living in London at the time and met through a close mutual friend’s 40th birthday celebration on 29th November 2008. I found out that night that it was also a shared birthday party with Andrzej. I went over to wish Andrzej a happy birthday and we started talking and ended up having a wonderful evening together, laughing and dancing the evening away. A few weeks later I received a bunch of flowers at work from Andrzej asking me out on a date. On our date we realised that our family homes are less than 5km away from each other in Cape Town. We know the same crowd of people in Cape Town and in London, even been to the same parties, but have never met. Love and faith had decided it was time for us to meet. As fate would have it, we both were flying to Cape Town to spend Christmas with our families. I flew out a week before Andrzej, not expecting to spend much time with him.

Andrzej: She made a huge impression on me and I did not want to let her get away so easily. I had to turn on the charm, so arranged for some flowers to be delivered to her family home in Cape Town while I was still in London, which really impressed her mother!

When I arrived in Cape Town a week later, I was only there for 24 hours as I was spending Christmas with my family in Etosha. I knew that Nikki’s parents had a house in Hermanus where they will be spending the holidays and if I was going to see her again when I got back before New Year’s, I would have to impress the parents big time and get an invite to the holiday house. I called Nikki to arrange to go out that night and then surprised her with the fact that I wanted to go round to her parents’ house so that I could meet them. She did find this very odd but went along with the idea. I first met her mother where I turned on the charm. After an hour, her mom invited me up to the holiday house. Nikki just stared big eyed at her mom, as nothing was

discussed with her and this was not part of the plan! I met her father, Arnold, a short while later and continued the relaxed charm offensive, which seemed to work.

The charm offensive worked like a dream as when I came back to Cape Town, drove up to Hermanus, we spent every available moment together. Nikki also changed her plans and decided to fly back to London on the same flight as me... and the rest, as the saying goes, is history!

How did he propose?

Nicolette: Two weeks before Andrzej proposed, we were on a holiday in Ibiza where I hurt my foot and received eight stitches in my baby toe.

We were dating for nine months when Andrzej popped the question. The Wednesday night before flying to Scotland to spend the weekend with my parents, I was sitting on the bed while Andrzej was cleaning and caring for my toe. While being on his knee, holding my foot, he asked me to marry him. Here he is holding most probably the ugliest part of my body and he says he wants to spend the rest of his life with me! Being Afrikaans and bit traditional, or making him work for it, I told him that our engagement will only be officially once he has asked my father for my hand in marriage. That next weekend we were meeting my parents in Scotland which gave him an opportunity. I still believe he planned it all that way.

Andrzej: I had been thinking about when would be the best time to “pop the question” and I wanted to do it the traditional way, down on one knee. While I was cleaning and dressing Nikki’s damaged toe it seemed to be the best possible moment, there was no chance she could run away!

WEDDINGS // 23

Page 24: The Aleit Group Magazine - Thirteenth Edition

When I asked her father for her hand in marriage, I did go through a heart-stopping moment. We were busy having dinner at the Castle we were staying and I had followed him to the toilet as the bar was on the way. I bought two shots of whisky, found two chairs in a quiet part of the bar and waited nervously for him to come out. When he came out I called him over, sat down and asked him for his daughters hand… There was a long silence and it felt like he took ages to think it through but eventually he smiled and welcomed me into the family. He announced our engagement at the dinner table where tears and laughter followed.

The best moment of the wedding day, for the both of you, individually?

Nicolette: Due to the weather changing, our wedding planner decided to move the ceremony from outside to the wine tasting room and cellar without informing me. It was a big surprise when I saw that no one was outside for the ceremony, but when walking through the large wooden wine cellar doors, the whole scene took my breath away. It was so beautiful, perfect and so much more personal than an outside ceremony. The trio band was playing, candles were burning, flower arrangements filled the room and people turned around to see me walk down the aisle to my future husband. This perfect moment, surrounded by friends and family, was my most perfect moment.

Andrzej: I had helped the wedding planner make the above decision as we felt a few drops of rain, and I have to say the sight of Nikki entering the cellar from the back really took my breath away and confirmed that the decision to move was not regretted at all. She looked radiant in her dress and had a lovely sparkle in her eye. I have to say that for me the best moment was when we were saying our vows, listening to Nikki’s confident voice and seeing a little tear in her eye is something I will not forget.

The Africa Energy Forum is hosted each year to create a meeting place for the African power sector as it unifies government and power utilities of Africa with the energy industry to focus on delivering power infrastructure projects in Africa. The AEF has become THE place to do business and meet new and prospective clients as it has become the leading marketplace for Africa’s renewable energy, power and gas sectors with participants reaching a record of approximately 700!

Government and state utilities utilise the AEF to address the international energy community on opportunities available in Africa’s power and gas sectors, such as Caterpillar who are committed to supplying energy with the electric power systems supported by the financial industry.

It has been a tradition that the leading sponsors host the private clients at an intimate and decadent Dinner on the 2nd night of the conference. This illustrious dinner is always located at one of the most prestige hotels that has the ability to illustrate and capture the true culture of the specific country that they are in. This lead the Aleit group to the Hotel de Rome situated on the famous Library square in Berlin.

The evening consisted of a fabulous five course meal which was rounded by a befitting German wine pairing. The 60 guests’ were welcomed and entertained by a jazz duo and wowed by the primarily white décor, 20 meter high glass ceilings topped off with glamorous glass chandeliers – true Aleit style. The dinner tables were adorned with carefully selected flowers in shades of blue and purple and the most sought after silver cutlery and glassware.

Another personal touch was added– as always – as they made sure the Euro 2012 Semi Final between Portugal and Spain was projected on a wall while guests were having their whiskey and cigars outside.

The A-team never seems to disappoint, even when not on their own turf!

A-PARTY

Wednesday the 30th of May 2012 – almost the middle of the year and most definitely the unofficial end of wedding season for the first half of the year. This date also meant that some form of celebration was in need – perhaps not so much to celebrate anything in particular except that we have survived! But then we remembered that the beautiful Lourensford Wine Estate was readying to launch their newly renovated Polo Deck so why not celebrate survival in chick Polo Style?!

All we needed was a name for this celebration... Launch was so done and Excuse-for-a-party wasn’t going to cut it. Then it hit us – we needed to launch our new company logo! The party was swiftly dubbed the A-Party and given a dress code of Black, White or Grey to tie it in. But then Aleit got creative (again!) and added in a fresh twist of green to the dress code and we eagerly began planning our outfits...

The planning of the event was bestowed upon Meagan Bridger, a 3rd Year Aleit Academy Student in the middle of a specialisation placement with Aleit Events. Meagan grabbed the project and ran, she had a couple of weeks to pull off an event where the guests list consisted of all her peers from the Academy as well as the entire Aleit Group and selected Service Professionals. Pressure was not the word...

Guests arrived at the beautiful Lourensford Wine Estate and were greeted by white shuttles branded with the bold Aleit A – the tone for the evening was firmly set! Shuttled to the Polo Deck and met by a refreshing glass of Pimm’s

and Lemonade and the delicious smell of canapés, guests went from strength to strength! Chatting and mingling was in need and backed by the beautiful sounds of the live Swing duo – new to the scene but definitely not wet behind the ears and they had the crowd swaying to their beat! Guests were invited to indulge in the Charcuterie and Soup stations whilst nibbling on freshly prepared wontons proffered by elegant waitrons.

Guests were then surprised that that was not the actual event – the real party was across the Polo field inside Laurent, Lourensford’s elegant venue. Surprised guests were shuttled again across the Polo field to have their minds blown by the decor and environment created inside...

Lighting, lighting, lighting… we proved our point at this event! The chandeliers glistened in appreciation as Aleit got through a few formalities. Guests were then entertained at the live Braai and Pizza stations as well as the self service Vodka Bar. Not long after that the dance floor was over utilized as guests danced the night away and straight in to the second half of the year…

I don’t know about you – but I can’t wait for the next one…

AFRICAN THEMED EVENTIt was a blustery Friday afternoon in March when Aleit Events were surprisingly tasked with an interesting event... Create an elegant Colonial African Dinner in the Winelands at a fabulous location – for 300 guests!!! And not just ordinary guests... High profile guests from all over the world were heading to our beautiful Country, more specifically, our seductive Mother City for the 59th Annual CIC General Assembly for the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation.

Upon their arrival, guests were met by a plush turf carpet underfoot guiding up to impeccably dressed waiters offering perfectly chilled Champagne – this would set the mood for the evening significantly! As guests mingled through the venue, an African Marimba Band could be heard enthralling guests even further…

A voluptuous venue allowed us to have many areas for guests to settle themselves for the formalities to begin. Whilst speeches were being made guests were offered delicious canapés and more importantly, more Champagne!

The venue was beautifully decorated with exquisite African elements combined with the fact that our guests were international, antique globes adjacent to various types of proteas with stacks of battered World Atlases adorned wooden tables. Candle light played an important role in the evenings look and feel. The clever addition of aluminum lanterns in rusty blues

and reds added depth and interesting warmth.

Guests were treated to bite sized portions of ten different meals that they could go and watch being prepared by top chefs in front of their very eyes. They could also nibble as they went along helping themselves at whichever section they were standing. This went down a storm and guests dug in opening their palettes to the new flavours as they mingled with the prestigious wine they were served.

Once the sun had completely set, we surprised guests with Fire Dancers who performed a daring number on the rolling lawns in front of the veranda. Backed by the lush vineyards the rich auburn fire was a complete vision not wasted on our guests who were glued to the action until the very last ember was extinguished.

After all the excitement guests were invited to have a perfectly roasted cup of coffee freshly ground and prepared at the open Coffee Bar. We also paired each cup with a clever South African handmade Truffle – think Milk Tart flavor!

Needless to say, after a fun filled evening, guests were fully sated and home time was close by… Guest made their merry way home having had an evening to remember – with the pictures to prove it!

| THE ACADEMYFEATURES

Page 47: The Aleit Group Magazine - Thirteenth Edition

The Aleit Academy strives to give back to the community in any way possible. In the past running charity drives such as SmartSarmies, the students have had a close up and personal look at the lives of those less fortunate and help make a noticeable difference. Something as small as playing with the kids and handing them something to eat at lunch time, made a world of a difference to them.

The Aleit Academy 1st year students are currently planning the Reach for a Dream Gala dinner, scheduled in November this year. While the 2nd and 3rd Year students assist the Jan Kriel School each year by coordinating their annual charity event which takes place in August this year.

Until then, we have had a look at children who need our help in their everyday life right now and we came across the Andrew Murray Children’s Home in Wellington.

The Home started out with a pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church in Wellington, Dr Andrew Murray, who established an industrial school for girls in Wellington. These girls could learn skills like housekeeping, food preparation and sewing, as well as learning to read and write. Later on, the schools started accepting boys and was then renamed as an orphanage. The Home hosts children ranging from ages 6 months to 18 years and places them in a “house unit” to try to form closer family bonds.

Viewing their gorgeous website, we found that the children needed some necessities, such as toiletries, bedding, stationery and toys. Reading this, it broke our hearts to think that some of the teenage girls do not even have a body cream or face wash to call their own!

Jumping into action, we decided to approach the shops and do what we do best – Shop! Buying anything we can on the list, we ended up spending more than our budget allowed. We decided to take it a step further and make it our winter project, by setting out a specific day to assist these children through tutoring sessions and play dates with the younger ones.

We are starting off with a monetary donation this month but make sure to check out our August Newsletter to see what we have managed to organise. The Aleit Group is bound to impress – as usual…

IN CLOSING

Page 51: The Aleit Group Magazine - Thirteenth Edition

In closing of yet another inspiring Aleit magazine, I am tremendously proud once again to see what each and every colleague and associate of mine has achieved and mastered every day over the past month. So stimulating to work alongside each and every team member on a daily basis.

In my opinion, both event management and wedding coordination is directly linked to hospitality. And that brings me to my conclusions made during my nu-merous appearances at various functions as a guest speaker, and through the many television appear-ance of late. There is a great hunger among people to recognize what is ethical, as hosting a private inti-mate dinner party can in many instances be directly linked to the presentation of a large event. You are hosting guests, and bottom line is, it is your duty and privilege to make them feel special and to create those moments of truth, that will separate you from any other hosts. One might think that in today’s modern society the old rules don’t apply anymore, however that is far from the truth, old school rules still apply and must never be overlooked or neglect-ed. So familiarize yourself with the do’s and don’ts of entertaining guests. A few must know’s would be that the lady is always placed on the left-hand side of her partner or spouse. Serve the eldest lady first, and then you end off with the youngest. The same applies for the male congregate. The host is always served last though. Who to invite to celebra-tions, mmmmm, well, my rule is, if they don’t know the name of your pet, they should not be making the guest list…not for your wedding, your birthday or any other festivity. Also keep in mind, should you host a function after six pm the partner of each and every guest needs to be invited.

The flip side should also not be overlooked. According to the legendary famous master of etiquette Emsie Schoeman, there are a few cardi-

TO END IT OFF

nal rules one must adhere to when invited to a dinner party. Two days before, find out what the decor and colour scheme is and send flowers that would suit the theme, this can then be used as decor. My rule as far as wines …when attending the party, take wine but do not expect it to be savoured the evening of the dinner party...and also, never ever take wine that has not been consumed back home, that is a big no no!

A few years ago, before the onset of technology in our everyday life one would send a postcard or telegram to thank your host or hostess. Nowadays a simple thank you card highlighting what stood out during the evening and also the host’s generosity is enough. An email, although acceptable, is a bit impersonal.

Additional tips when hosting or being hosted. Avoid sensitive conversational topics such as race or reli-gion. Keep dialogues light and easy going – every-body enjoys talking about good food, the Blackberry vs iPhone debate…and then of course everyone’s fa-vourite, Julius Malema.

The Aleit Group is still exceptionally proud to be the most published company in South Africa, the UK, Po-land and Germany - what an immense honour! Visit our media page to see more of the wonderful events we are able coordinate and execute for our high pro-file clients.

Here is to another prosperous month, good manners, brilliant dinner parties, great friendships and as al-ways, a spectacularly beautiful Winter in South Africa!
