  • 1. What is a Social NetworkingService? A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, who, for example, share interests and/or activities. -Wikipedia.com

2. A social Network service consists of representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web- based and provide means for users to interact over the internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging. Social Networking sites allow users to share ideas, activities, events and interests within their individual networks. 3. Social networking sites share a variety of technical features. The most basic of these are visible profiles with a list of friends who are also users of the site. A profile is generated from answers to questions, such as age, location, interests, etc. Some sites allow users to upload pictures, add multimedia content or modify the look and feel of the profile. Others, e.g. FACEBOOK, allow users to enhance their profile by adding modules or Applications. Many sites allow users to post blog entries, search for others with similar interests and compile and share lists of contacts. 4. User profiles often have a section dedicated to comments from friends and other users. To protect user privacy, social networks typically have controls that allow users to choose who can view their profile, contact them, add them to their list of contacts and so on. Some social networks have the ability to create groups that share common interests or affiliations, upload or stream live videos, and hold discussions in forums. 5. Web-based social networking services make it possible to connect people who share interests and activities across political, economic and geographic boarders. Through e-mail and instant messaging, online communities are created where a gift economy and reciprocal altruism are encouraged through cooperation. Information is particularly suited to gift economy, as information is a nonrival good and can be gifted at practically no cost. 6. TRIVIA Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.[8] The Web sites membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities before opening to high school students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over. However, based on ConsumersReports.org in May 2011, there are 7.5 million children under 13 with accounts, violating the sites terms of service. 8. Social networking is allowing scientific groups to expand their knowledge base and share ideas, and without these new means of communicating modern science theories might become isolated and irrelevant.A final rise in social network use is being driven bycollege students using the service to network withprofessionals for internship and job opportunities. Many studies have been done on the effectiveness ofnetworking online in a college setting. 9. Social Networks are being used by teachers and students as a communication tool. Because many students are already using a wide range of social networking sites, teachers have begun to familiarize themselves with this trend and are now using it to their advantage. Teachers and professors are doing everything from creating chat-room forums and groups to extend classroom discussions to posing assignments, tests and quizzes, to assisting with homework outside of the classroom setting. Social networks are also being used to foster teacher-parent communication. These sites make it possible and more convenient for parents to ask questions and voice concerns without having to meet face-to-face. 10. Through data mining, companies are able to improve their sales and profitability. With this data, companies create customer profiles that contain customer demographics and online behavior. Social Networks has been especially important to marketing strategists. Social networks Social Ads program gives companies access to the millions of profiles in order to tailor their ads to a social network users own interests and hobbies. 11. Put simply, social networking is a way for one person to meet up with other people on the internet. Thats not all though. Some people use social networking sites for meeting new friends on the Net. Others use it to find old friends. Then there are those who use it to find people who have the same problems or interests they have, this is called Niche Networking. Following this trend is the emerging trend of people meeting online to meet offline. More and more relationships and friendships are being formed online and then carried to an offline/in person setting. 12. Privacy Issues Privacy concerns with social networking services havebeen raised growing concerns amongst users on thedangers of giving out too much personal information andthe threat of sexual predators. Users of these services alsoneed to be aware of data theft or viruses. There is also an issue over the control of datainformation that was altered or removed by the user mayin fact be retained and/or passed to third parties. 13. Potential For Misuse Online bullying, also called cyber-bullying , is arelatively common occurrence and it can often resultin trauma for the victim. There are not manylimitations as to what individuals can post whenonline. Individuals are given the power to postoffensive remarks or pictures that could potentiallycause a great amount of emotional pain for anotherindividual. 14. Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal communication has been a growing issue as more people have turned to social networking as a means of communication. The convenience that social network sites give users to communicate with one another can also damage their interpersonal communication. There is the risk that we come to see others as objects to be accessedand only for the parts we find useful, comforting or amusing. Furthermore, social network sites can create insincere friendships. 15. Risk for child safetyCitizens and governments have been concerned by a misuseby a child and teenagers of social networking services, inparticular in relation to online sexual predators. A certainnumber of actions have been engaged by governments tobetter understand the problem and find some solutions. A2008 panel concluded that technological fixes such as ageverification and scans are relatively ineffective means ofapprehending online predators. In May 2010, a childpornography social networking site with hundreds ofmembers was dismantled by law enforcement. It wasdeemed the largest crimes against children. 16. U2 Ukay Ukay 17. In October 2006, a fake MySpace profile created in the name of Josh Evans by Lori JanineDrew led to the suicide. Megan hung herself, a story broke in the media linking aMySpace hoax with her death.Supposedly, Megan had spread gossip about a former friend that lived just four housesaway from her. In retaliation, Lori Drew (the mother of the girl), her assistant, and thegirl created a faux MySpace account. The account was for a non-existing sixteen year oldmale named, Josh Evans. Josh contacted Megan and began an online friendship. Thetone of the messages soon changed from positive, flirtatious, and uplifting to negativeattacks. Lori Drew, as Josh, posted bulletins, shared private messages, etc.. in an effort todefame and embarrass Megan. Megan told her mother what Josh had done, but hermother admits that she was most upset by the foul language Megan had used to respondto Josh. The last messages taken from Megans computer read: Everybody in OFallon knowshow you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of yourlife. The world would be a better place without you. Meier responded to Josh with:Youre the kind of boy a girl would kill herself over. Megan was found hanging in herroom just twenty minutes after the last message was sent. When the hoax first hit the associated press, Lori Drew claimed it was all just a joke.Public outcry pushed prosecutors to come up with something to charge Lori Drew with. She was indicted in May 2008 on three counts of accessing protected computers withoutauthorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress and one count ofcriminal conspiracy. She was found guilty lesser charges of misdemeanors, and the jurywas deadlocked on the fourth felony charge of criminal conspiracy. Witnesses clearlytestified that Drew intended to use the correspondence with Josh to get informationabout Megan, and then later humiliate her in retribution for her allegedly spreadinggossip about her daughter. It was also said that Lori Drew knew of Megans battle withdepression. The assistant was given immunity in return for her testimony. 18. text & e-mail reactions..I get the biggest nightmare ever!
