APRIL 2018 / ELK CALL PAGE 3

My Brothers and Sisters,

Did you notice in your Elk Call that my picture has moved to the top of the page? I am so excited to have arrived at this wonderful position as your Exalted Ruler. As I have advanced through the Chairs in our Lodge, I have learned many things. I am looking forward to applying this knowledge and serving all of you to the best of my abilities. I want to thank you again for the confidence you have shown in me by electing me to this very honorable position. I promise to do all I can to support all of you as members and to do all I can to ensure that our lodge continues to be the best lodge in Elkdom.

This year the Orange Coast District will be having the annual Ritual Contest at our Lodge the weekend of April 28th and 29th. Last year we were the Orange Coast District’s Ritual Champions and we will compete for this title again this year. We are scheduled to perform in front of the judges on Saturday, April 28th at 9:00 am. I hope that you can be there to watch us perform and if possible, wear your red shirts. There will be a tailgate party on Sunday, April 29th at our Lodge and all are welcome to attend. If you would like to attend this tailgate party, please bring a side dish to share will all. This party will start at 10:00 am. At 11:00 am our Esteemed Leading Knight, Anthony Manzo, will be participating in the “Eleven O’Clock Toast” with all the Esteemed Leading Knights in our District. I hope to see all of you on Saturday and Sunday to support our Ritual Team.

And remember my members… “Fidelity is of Supreme Importance”.

Fraternally yours, Sherrie Larson

Hello brothers and sisters,Easter Sunday is one of my favorite brunches of the year! Spring is here, and the kids

and families come dressed in their Easter digs. This year, the Easter Bunny returned to the lodge for a fun morning of egg hiding and hunting! The children eagerly searched for eggs and treats to fill up their Easter Baskets! Members took family pics, children had their faces painted and everyone enjoyed their time at the lodge! I would like to thank everyone who donated eggs and candy, and of course thanks to everyone who helped fill them. Also, there were a handful of members who donated cash to help fund our Easter Bunny! Helping to build wonderful family memories at the lodge is very rewarding, so thanks again everyone!

I would like to begin my year with asking for volunteers to help at the upcoming Strawberry Festival. I have posted up the sign-up sheets out by the pool tables. The festival begins on Friday, May 25th concluding on Monday, May 28th. We have a full schedule to fill so I am counting on everyone to put in at least 2 hours “minimum” to help us at the booth to promote our lodge and to sell Raffle Tickets. This year’s major raffle will be a very nice getaway vacation package for 2 with a few runner-up prizes. Our lodge goal with this annual raffle has always been to raise much needed funds for our lodge. But times are changing so we thought we would try something new this year. Remember, the raffle winners are drawn at our Labor Day Family Picnic. More details on the raffle to follow.

The next few months our officers will be busy with the district lodge visitations, witnessing installations as well as attending Inaugural Balls. It is a very busy time of the year, but I find it very rewarding to visit with the other lodges. All members are welcome to join us at visitations; the bigger sea of red, the better. So check the lodge calendars for dates and locations. Or, ask one of us. We appreciate the support and we’ll be glad to have you there!

Please remember that Elkdom promotes Brotherly Love and Charity. Fill your Purple Pigs to the rim and turn them in! Remember to get involved! Just reach out to me or the other officers and we’ll help you find a spot for your opportunity to help make a difference!

Anthony ManzoEsteemed Leading Knight

Hello to all my fellow Elk members. The new Elk Year has just begun and many of the activities at the lodge are already in progress; Inaugural Ball, Easter, Mother’s Day and many other lodge activities are ready for you to enjoy. This year will bring a lot of excitement to the lodge. We have our Orange Coast District State VP at our lodge, Randy Eldridge. When you see him around the lodge, congratulate him on his new assignment and be sure that he will make our lodge and members proud. We, the Officer Corp, promise to make you proud during this year’s district ritual competition. Also, to continue making Garden Grove Lodge the best lodge in the district, we need your help. Come and get involved in the lodge. We need all the help that you can provide. You can volunteer, become an officer, work in committees, or visit the lodge for one of our dinner nights, and have a drink and a delicious dinner while you meet new and old members. Only you can make this lodge the best lodge in Elkdom. I challenge everyone of you to get involved by inviting a friend or acquaintance to become a member this year. For the first time in a while we are a +1 lodge. Let’s continue the trend this year.

Remember my brothers and sisters…“Be Just to Your Fellow Man”

Sincerely,Tony Lopez

Esteemed Loyal Knight

Hello, my fellow members of Garden Grove Elks Lodge #1952. We are entering into a new Elk year and I have a very positive outlook toward it. I would like to bid a fond farewell to my position as Lodge Esquire. Good luck Dean. And, I welcome the opportunities, duties, responsibilities and challenges that my new position of Esteemed Lecturing Knight will most certainly bring. However, I know that with the help and support of each one of my brothers and sisters in Elkdom everything will be great! I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming Installation night and at all Lodge meetings from then on. The Officer Corp is very dedicated to make this lodge the best in the Orange Coast District, if not the best in the nation. With the large membership that we have, this goal should be attainable if we all work together for this common goal.

With a couple installations, (Mission Viejo Saddleback Valley Lodge #2444 & Huntington Beach Lodge #1959) and an inaugural ball, (Huntington Beach Lodge #1959) under my belt I am very excited to be part of Garden Grove’s festivities and show that we stack up the highest in relation to the other lodges. That being said, the list of other events happening at our lodge this month is staggering. A few that I would like to mention are Easter Brunch, The Comedy and Magic Club S.I.D.S. fundraiser and the District Ritual Contest. Thank you all for the help and support you have given and will continue to give to make Garden Grove the best lodge in town!

Emblem ClubPresident’s Message

Thank you so much for the honor of electing me as your President. Also, Emblem has a great Corps of Officers serving this year.

The Installation on March 18th was a wonderful event, attended well by Emblem, Elk, and Family members. In attendance was our “Installation Suite” which is comprised of current and past Emblem State and Supreme Officers. A lovely reception, organized by all our Emblem Past Presidents, chaired by Ruthann German, PP followed the installation and was enjoyed by all. Thanks to all Past Presidents and members that worked so hard to prepare the appetizers and delicious food.

Our Scholarship Luncheon was held on March 24th, honoring five deserving students. Thank you Mindy Osborne and your committee for all your time and efforts in awarding these young people their scholarships, and organizing this luncheon.

The Elks “Elk of the Year” Banquet is being held on March 31st, with the Elks “Installation of Officers” being conducted on April 5th. The “Inaugural Ball” will be Saturday, April 7th. Please support our Elks by attending these important functions.

The Emblem State Convention is being held in Ontario on April 30th through May 5th. If you are planning on attending please bring your checks, payable to State Convention Fund, one for registration and one for meals, if applicable. Since Ontario is so close, it would be terrific if many of you could attend, one day or all six.

Lake Elsinore Marina RV Park February 23-25

The Elk-Ender February outing at the Lake Elsinore Marina RV Park was superbly led by the Wagon Masters, John and Annette Zahn, and a cast of volunteers (Zulke’s, Racke’s, and the Nicholson’s). This year we grew to thirty-four RVs up from the seventeen last year. It was great to be back at this campground it did not rain again but we had sunny skies and cold temperatures, down to the low thirties at night.

Friday’s activities included the normal welcoming of fellow Elk-Enders updating each other on recent news and rumors. In addition John Zahn’s knowledge of RVs was put to a test when the hot water faucet in the Morrissey rig came off creating a geyser in the trailer. Fortunately no damage just another chance to dry out a few cabinets and pots and pans. Dinner on Friday was Chili Dogs cooked by our Wagon Master Team. The homemade Nicholson chili was excellent. Following dinner our members enjoyed a rigorous card game of “Skru Your Neighbor.” We owe a big thank you to Janice Skelton for organizing this fun event. Cheri Racke was the eventual winner, Curt McMillian and Chuck O’Dey catching second and third place.

The Pot Luck breakfast on Saturday morning provided variety delicious choices to more than satisfy the hungry campers. After breakfast we rested to ensure we were ready to enjoy the open house reception at new RV’s for David and Robbi Maurer and Ken and Karen Moody. We enjoyed celebrating their new “Homes” with champagne and appetizers. The baseball game in the afternoon on was won again by the men with a score of 15-11. It was good to see Rob and Karen Neil and Jim and Leslie Minor visit knowing where to find a good time. In addition, we were more than happy to have members from the Corona Elks Lodge join us for the weekend.

Saturday night dinner consisted of cooking your own choice of entrée and various salads and delicious desserts. Keeping with tradition John Zahn thanked all of our members for their help in making the outing fun then conducted our meeting. Of course we were visited by a local constable, Sheriff Bob Zulke, who did a great job observing and reporting on the “out of control campers”. Following the meeting a rousing game of left, right, center, organized by Anita McMillian, with Evelyn Morrissey the eventual last person standing. The combination of our fun games and sheriff fines added to the Purple Pig grew by $171.00 and Lodge Maintenance Fund received $105.00.

The Wagon Master Team did a superb job and we thank them for their efforts.

SINGLE ELKS(Single, Widowed, Divorced)

The single Elks will be meeting for lunch at the Garden Grove Lodge on April 10th at 11:30 am. Join us to enjoy a reasonably priced luncheon offered by our Lodge and to meet and interact with others in our group. Hope to see you there.

Our second meeting of the month will be on Sunday afternoon, April 22nd for pizza at 2 pm. We would love to have you stay and enjoy the afternoon entertainment.

To make reservations please contact Mary Ferraro at 626-422-1839.

Elk of the Month April 2018

The person I have chosen for my first “Elk of the Month” has been my biggest supporter in Elkdom since I joined the Officer Corps as your Lodge Esquire. This person has been sharing his knowledge and experience in each of the positions I have held in this lodge.

He has been my advisor and my constant source of information and advice when I have needed it. In addition to supporting me through my years of progressing through the chairs, this member, has stepped up and

volunteered to help many others in the lodge. He is the Orange Coast District’s Piggy Bank Chairman and was awarded the CHEA Chairman of the Year. He is our Orange Coast District’s Association Vice President Designate. He is our Lodge’s Assistant Ritual Coach and helped our Ritual Team become the Orange Coast District’s Ritual Champions and the CHEA State Ritual Contest 2nd Place winners. He helps cook at our Sunday brunches, sort, box, and deliver Christmas Basket at Christmas time, and the Needy Children’s Christmas Party.

It gives me great pleasure to name Randy Eldridge, PER as my April 2018 Elk of the Month.

April 2018

Here is the latest news f rom you r Travel Club.

We are hard at work putting the next outings together as well as trying to make this club into the best in the district. A big thing you can do is

attend the Quarterly meetings. This is where you can get a good insight into what’s going on in the Club. Without your input, we can’t do it. Right now we are working on a trip to the Famous Del Mar Race Track. If you have never been to a thorough-bred- horse race, now is the time. In addition to a nice bus ride to the city of Del Mar you will be treated to a great lunch and be given instructions on how to bet.

Of late, I have had members ask me “are there any trips that we, who are still employed can go on”? Such weekend trips can be set up if you the members want one. One I know of is the trip to Los Al Race track that will be held this coming June 15th to celebrate “Father’s Day”. Being it is not a bus trip, the number needed is in the 20’s or more. Social hour is 5 to 6 pm, then, comes the food 6 to 7 pm, followed by the races at 7 pm. Ends about 9 pm. If interested contact me at [email protected] or call 800 300 6246. The earlier the better.

A reminder, the next travel club meeting will be held on May 5th at 10 am, a light lunch will be served. It’s not too soon to make your reservation and it’s easy, all you have to do is call 800 300 6246 and tell them your name and how many will be in your party.

To assist you, as you come into the outer Lodge entry, NOTE the message board on your left, it will have information on coming trips, plus the travel book is in the office for your convenience.

Coming trips you might want to look into. May 17, Trail of treats in Solvang. June 10th, 7 day motor coach tour of Northern California Coast, July 26 we have the Gondola Getaway at Alamitos Bay. Lots more are offered. See you at the May 5th meeting.

Remember, this is your Travel Club. Make use of it. George Flores

HOWARD WHITTAKERElk of the Year 2017-2018

Howard Whittaker was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1934. He lived on a farm while growing up with his parents and 11 brothers and sisters. He tried logging as a teenager and lost part of a few toes. Since many of his brothers had been in the military he decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corp. in Portland, Oregon. He was a proud Marine from 1954 through 1958. He was a helicopter mechanic in the Marines and spent 16 months overseas in Japan. After that he was stationed at El Toro, California, which is where he met his wife Mary Jane. She had five children and they got married,

lived in Garden Grove and then had three more girls. They were married for 51 years. They raised a family of 7 daughters and 1 son.

When he got out of the Marines, he and his brother Dick were partners in a gas station for a few years. Then he was a mechanic for Jack Hale Automotive in Garden Grove. Howard was like a son to Jack and he ended up buying the automotive business from Jack. He then bought a piece of property on Brookhurst Street in Garden Grove and built a new automotive shop and moved the business there, where he was successful for many years. He sold the automotive business in the late 1970’s and as everyone knows he never stopped working. During all these years, he had a good eye for real estate and was able to be successful at that too.

Howard was active in the City of Garden Grove during the 1970’s. He was a member of the Traffic Commission and the Planning Commission. He also served as the Chairman of both of those Commissions.

In 1981, several years after he sold the automotive business, he decided to buy property just outside of Grants Pass, Oregon, in the Applegate Valley. He bought a house and 11 acres of alfalfa. It didn’t take long and he decided that grapes were a better crop. So, in went a vineyard. He harvested grapes and sold to the local wineries. One year a wine made from his grapes even won the Oregon State Fair award. He also developed a trellis system for the grapes and used this in his vineyard. Again, this trellis system was pretty good and other people were interested in it. From that he started another business of producing trellis’ and cross arms, which today is Vineyard Systems Mfg. He opened a shop in Garden Grove again, and after a few years moved it to Stanton where he bought an industrial building. He tinkered at the trellis business and E & J Gallo Winery was even one of his customers. Howard had 6 patents on trellis’ for the grape industry and forklift pallet stops. He sold Vineyard Systems Mfg. in 2007 and it continues to be a very successful business.

Among many projects that Howard had was an opportunity to open a mortuary in Moreno Valley at one of this commercial properties. The business opened in 1994, and was another very successful venture for him. He sold this business in 2001.

Howard stayed in Oregon until 1991. He then returned once again to Garden Grove. He has been a member of the Garden Grove Elks since 1960. He likes to attend dances, lunches, dinners, special parties and Elk-Ender motor home adventures. He has earned the Fred Morrison Award, Grand Exalted Ruler Award, Elk of the Month and the Blake Barregar Award.

He has personally raised funds for the following: 911 First Responders - $8K, Elks Park BBQ/patio cover - $3K and the draperies for the Elks Banquet Room - $6K. He works at the Elks Lodge doing various repairs, i.e. replaced parking lot lights to all LED to save money on electrical, all lights inside at the facility to LED, and any other mechanical or electrical repairs needed. He does that along with several others as part of the Wednesday Repairs & Maintenance Team.

Howard is interested in classic cars and car shows. He has restored a 1955 Cadillac and also owns a 1956 Chevrolet truck. He always has a project going and stays busy taking care of his properties, helping hand to his kids and handy man to his friends. He welcomes all to his home for barbeques and his house is the meeting place for his big family. He enjoys people and is a friend to all, a successful business man and family man. He is very proud to have served in the United States Marines and continues to be a true patriotic American!
