From the Station of FidelityHere it is the thank you article, and my last one. Looking back, this has been one of the
best times of my life. Representing our lodge this year as our Exalted Ruler has been both anhonor & pleasure. The support shown by the members has been very much appreciated.Being an officer and member of this lodge, I feel we are very fortunate. We have a large groupof people who are on the same page; we are all welcoming, friendly, and are always there toget the work done, when it is time to do so, a trait that we are known for throughout Elkdom, both locally, and abroad. We have great people that sacrifice self for betterment of our lodge, and that is why we are so successful. Thank you to all of you!
I would like to thank our Officers Corps for the 2008-2009 year. You have been verysupportive and complimentary to both Lisa and I; we really appreciate it. You are a fine groupto work with! Thanks to our committee chairs, you did a fantastic job with your respectivecommittees in furthering the good work that we were able to accomplish.
I want to thank our Ritual Team and our coaches. This year, we did something in our lodgethat we have not done since 1986, and not in our District, since 1992: win the State RitualChampionship. I feel very blessed that I was able to be a part of this team. Being the ER for this team was an extrabonus for me personally. Everyone did their part through hard work, and dedication, and it was well worth it. Thanks fortaking care of business! What a great ride! Keep up the hard work and we’ll be in Portland on another “business trip”soon.
I want to thank all of the PER’s that have been there to set examples, listen, and advise when asked. I especiallywant to thank my father & mother, PER John Miller III and PFL Jeanne for their support. You both made this sound likeso much fun, I jumped at the chance to join the chairs and make my way to becoming ER. I would also like to thank PERDavid Skelton & PFL Janice, for their help and guidance this last year as well. I want to give special thanks to PER Randy& PFL Luann, for taking Lisa and me under their wing, preparing both both of us for the busy year ahead. Many timesI was on the phone making sure I was not missing something or running an event improperly. I would be remiss if I didnot thank our Chairman of the Board and his lady, Gerry & Lorraine McConnell, for their help and support as well. Youare all very special to us and were lifesavers in getting us through this year.
To incoming ER, Jim Anderson, his First Lady Esther Aceituno, and the 2009-2010 Corps of officers, I wish you all ofthe good fortune that we had this year. I have said this many times to many people, but it is true: As much fun as we had,and good things that we accomplished, I know that next year, and the years ahead will be even better.
Lastly, I need to thank my wife & best friend, Lisa, and my girls Meredith & Carley, for all their help and support, thesepast 8 years as an officer. Without your patience, commitment, and sacrifice, I would not have been able to be an officer.
To anyone that I may have forgotten, it was not intentional. Thank you all for “Stepping up to the Plate for Elkdom”!As John Wooden stated, “There is more value in the journey than the victory itself”. Never in my life has this been truer!
John Miller, IVExalted Ruler
Exalted Ruler
From the Station of CharityJohn Miller the 4th, is one class act, as is his wife Lisa. IV and I have become very good
friends over the past four to five years, and without their help and friendship, I would havebeen up the creek many times. John’s commitment to our lodge is second to none. I’m going tomiss him being an officer this year, but I know he will be there when we need help. That’s thetype of guy he is, thank you both.
I’m sure you all know by now, that Esther Aceituno will be our First Lady when I’m ER. I’mvery excited to have Esther as my First Lady, and I know she will do a great job representingour lodge. This next year will be an exciting year. Everything seems to be falling into place withthe Ritual Team and Officers, and we have a lot of new things planned that we are going to bedoing. Stay tuned.
The Leading Knights Auction is March 7, at our lodge. Please plan on attending. We will beserving Westminster Elks Santa Maria Tri Tip dinner at 5:30, and the Auction starts at 7:00 pm.We have some great items that will be auctioned off.

From the Station of Brotherly Love
Let’s talk about Volunteers this month. Webster’s Dictionary defines it as a person whovoluntarily offers himself or herself, for a service or undertaking, or a person who performs aservice willingly and without pay. The B.P.O.E. is made up of many volunteers, working inmany areas, all for a common cause. Most recently we had a group of volunteers deliverChristmas baskets to needy families in our community. This is a yearly undertaking and benefitsmany, but we need more volunteers. Just this last weekend, I had the opportunity to help withthe annual dues statements, and this took many people to turn a major undertaking into avery simple task. I overheard one of the volunteers’ say that they had never been asked tohelp out like that. Let me assure you that there are many areas of the lodge in which we needhelp. So please stop by and see any one of the officers and we will be more than happy to getyou in touch with the right people to help you. For instance, there is Monday Taco Night that isput on by teams one through four and most of them are always looking for help. There isTuesday night Bingo. This is a very worthwhile cause where volunteers are always needed.Come down and ask for Bob Holliday. I am certain he will find a place for you. We have a newGreeter Chairman, Joe Stevens, who is looking for volunteers to be greeters. Of course there is the Assistant Tilers whoalways can use extra help. Larry Hudson is the Lodge Tiler, so if you are interested give him a call or say hello oneevening when he is in the lodge.
As you can see there are many opportunities to become a volunteer in the Garden Grove Lodge. All it takes is youto say YES I CAN.

From the Station of JusticeHere we are in the last month of the Elk year. It has been a good one. Johnny 4 and Lisa
have done an outstanding job leading the lodge, its officers, members, staff, and employees,to a new level of energy, enthusiasm, and accomplishment. Good leaders are only as good asthose that they lead, so all of you deserve a pat on the back for jumping in when needed, andworking hard in front, and behind the scenes, getting things done.
The E.R. Getaway was a great success as always. Leslie did an outstanding job as CruiseDirector. Constance and I spent most of it in bed! Yi Haw! Just kidding … We got a stomach bugthat hit us pretty hard for the last half of the trip. Good thing the first half was great! I got a bitof time on the crap table, so life is good. LOL. Constance won the scavenger hunt. Thanks to J4and Julie for helping her along. The Pub Crawl was a blast. I thought our straight, Ace high, was pretty good until I found out a couple of people had Royal Flushes. Coincidence…I thinknot. If we make it to ER we are planning something unusual so stay tuned.
As of this writing the Sweetheart Dance is a few days away but I know it will be a fine timetoo! Plus, we have started nominations, elections, and Elk of the Year will have been done inFebruary.
When you receive your Elk Call, the Officer Corps will have been elected, and be busy working on the end of theyear, and beginning of next. It is very busy times for these volunteers, so please bear with us if we look a bit distracted.Ritual Contest is starting to loom big on the horizon too so we are working weekly to be the best we can be for you, andto keep the First Place title in the District and the State.
I will be heading up Labor Day. I have had a couple of people volunteer to help, and I can use all the volunteers I canget, so please let me know if you are interested. Time is getting close to decide on the fundraiser. I would like to dosomething other than the vehicle. Please let me know if you have any ideas.
Jackie Lucas Rice has agreed to stay on as Sickness and Distress Chairperson. She did a great job for Jim, and willcontinue to serve the lodge well.
I am looking for members to “Step up to the Plate for Elkdom” by being willing to chair some committees. I need helpwith Flag Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Major Project, to name a few. Please let me know if you have some timeto help.
We are winding down the year in March. But, as always, we still need to focus on bringing in new members, andkeeping the ones we already have. Please recommit to calling a friend and bringing them for an event. Or, if you have anold Elk buddy you have not seen at the lodge, ask them to join you for a meeting, burger, or a taco!

Editors CornerOr a night with
KaraokeBernadette, our lovely
lodge organist, decidedshe wanted to see a
“Karaoke Night” at the lodge, and Wednesday night would be anideal night to have it. Why not? There are a lot of folks here forFamily Night Dinner, and hopefully, some might stick around andtest the “vocal water” afterwards. Others may be curious who canor cannot sing, and a whole lot of people come to watch theaction. The lodge was a bit hesitant, because it’s always risky tospend new dollars on something that might not work. Bernadettewouldn’t give up, and decided to fund a few weeks, and see if shecould get it going. The lodge, now seeing some growth weekly, islending a hand, and hopefully this will be a fun regular event.Robert Edmonds, a man of many Karaoke CD’s, probably closeto 1000, brings them, and his Karaoke machine, and a good timeis had by all.
Karaoke is an amazing phenomenon. It brings out the bestand worst of those who believe rightly, or wrongly, that they cansing. Many don’t really have any idea, but everybody has funwatching their friends sound like a leaky faucet, or knocking theirsocks off with a standout performance. The great surprise is seeingwho does what. Virtually everyone who wants to get up and performgets to do so, and can even get a CD of their performance forposterity, for only five bucks! Those who just want to beentertained, and care less who is good and who isn’t, can becomeinstant critics. I had a blast, being both surprised by the quality, and amazed by an occasional few, who should really be applauding, drinking more, and staying as far away from a microphone aspossible. The bottom line is that it’s fun, and in a lousy economicatmosphere, it gets us away from our troubles, it’s inexpensive, and it can be a new source of income for the lodge. The fun startsabout 7:00 PM and goes till 10:00. Who knows; you might becomea star!
To John and Lisa, thankyou for a wonderful year filledwith many memories, and goodtimes. John and I have workedtogether, and I believe thatthings were great. We did manyevents as a team, Elks andEmblem, working together tobetter the lodge. All the Emblemladies enjoyed the activitieswhere we were helping the Elks, and the Elks were helpingEmblem. Togetherness is what it’s all about, and goodcommunication. I think that we have achieved it this year.
Allen and I have just returned from the E.R. getaway, cruise to Mexico. What an awesome time we had. JohnIV and I, sincerely hope that you enjoyed it too.
John, stay safe and keep well, and I hope that we willalways be friends, thank you to Lisa, she has been a dear, and also the girls, we love all of you. It has been wonderfuland what can I say but THANK YOU, GOD BLESS YOU,AND KEEP YOU SAFE!
To Jim, and his Corps of Officers, I know that we willhave another wonderful year filled with many of the samememories. Our club installation is March 22, 2009; hopeto see you all there. Remember, “EMBLEM WILL FILLYOUR HEART WITH LOVE.”
GOD BLESS US ALL,Rose Marie

Emblem ClubPresident
A Thank you from Bob and Ann, and apology from me!In the almost six years I have been the Editor of the Elk Call, I have
accidentally overlooked less than 10 articles that should have been printed.Unfortunately three of them were written by “Chili Bob Griffith”. I havealso misspelled his name on the cover yet; when he was named Elkof the Year! So here is my latest missed article by Bob and Ann Lybeckto those who helped them at Christmas time. I’m sure there are more tocome.
We would like to thank the 29 Elk member volunteers, andspouses, who helped wrap presents donated to our lodge from theToys for Tots. Again this year we asked Rose Marie Quinn of theEmblem club #279 for help. Not only did she and her club membersrespond, but they also wrapped 800 presents! Then she coordinatedthe separation of the age groups of the boys and girls (up to 12years old) and saw to it that their presents went into the food boxesof approximately 192 needy families, with 23 presents going tochildren of our own employee’s. The balance went to theOrangewood Children’s home. There is an average of 150 to 200abandoned and abused children year around, with some having nohome or parents! We wished we could have had enough presentsfor all but ——— maybe next Christmas!
Happy New Year to all Ann and “Chili” Bob

Archaeologists to Begin GG Elks Dig
April 1, 2009Garden Grove, CA
Last January while some of the members of theGarden Grove Elks Lodge were digging up the soil andre-doing planters at the rear of the lodge a notedpaleontologist, Dr. Moishe Pipick, who was visiting thelodge noticed some bone fragments in the soil. Heimmediately was cognizant of the bones being quiteancient and retrieved many for study. In his laboratory atMIT he determined that they were from the long extinct(dating back to 2591 BC) and rare “North American FlyingRaptor Weasel.” This animal was about the size of a largemonkey according to Dr. Pipick.
On March 20th, the lodge was notified that no furtherdigging will be allowed anywhere on the lodge groundsand that much of the east side patio will have to beremoved immediately for the starting dig by archaeologistsattempting to retrieve every bone and fragment. Lodgemembers may volunteer to participate in the dig byshowing-up on the start date with appropriate dress andeye protection.
California Paleontology Committee Chairman Dr. EddyPusswreks stated that he hoped the entire lodge andparking lot would not have to be raised because the Stateof California hasn’t the money to replace the lodge andparking lot, let alone the park area. He was very upbeatthat it should take less than two years. Excavation is setto begin April 1st at the far northeast corner of theproperty.
