The alternatives
Transition Keynsham Energy GroupA Hydroelectric PowerScheme for Keynsham.
Is it possible?
What is a hydroelectric power scheme?
• Uses water and gravity• Provides a large amount of electricity • Renewable• Sustainable
Types of hydroelectric power schemes
• 3 main types Storage system – Dam creates a reservoir Pumped storage schemesRun of River (ROR) schemes
In Keynsham we are suited to an ROR scheme
Where can it go?3 Possible sites: Albert Mill Memorial Park Keynsham Weir
Keynsham Weir – best current option
What could it look like?
How much electricity?Annual mean flow rate greater 20 m3/s*
If we take 20 m3/s as the peak flow rate:• One turbine = 518 homes
(1.96 M kWh per year)• Two turbines = 1,036 homes
(3.92 M kWh per year)
*Estimated figure only
Who gets the electricity?• National grid• Energy supplier pay: - Fixed sum per kWh generated - Separate payment for exported to national grid• Payback in approx. 10 years
FundingCost:• Potentially between £300k* and £500k*
Funding:• Bath and West Community Energy (BWCE)• Create a ‘Keynsham’ energy company - Community members become shareholders
*Estimated figures only
Next Steps• Engage- Community- Landowners- Weir/river owners- Environmental Agency
• Feasibility study
