Mother Nature was kind to us over the weekend with all fi nals played under blue skies
and only a slight breeze that did pick up on Sunday. The main change at Sportscover Arena was the addition of a temporary grandstand installed for the all fi nals during September. The stand seats over 400 patrons and the extra elevation gave the spectators a better view of the action.
Already we have fi ve teams who have progressed to Grand Finals and with that, guaranteeing a place in a higher section. University Blues have played like a Premier team all year and after a tight tussle in the fi rst three quarters were able to pull away from St Kevin’s in the fi nal quarter to take a deserved victory. It is terrifi c to see a club’s player group fi nd the resolve to rebound from the disappointment of relegation after 20 years in the Premier Section. It has been a credit to the club, who have also taken out the Winning Edge Club Championship ahead of St Bernard’s, fi nishing on top in the fi rsts and reserves, fi nishing fourth in the higher Premier section thirds comp and second in the Under 19’s. Blues also responded to a VAFA call and fi elded a team in the Under 18 competition. They do deserve the honour of returning to our Premier Section.
After going winless for over a season and plummeting to Division 2, Hampton Rovers have resurged and under youthful administration and coaching departments have won their way back to Premier B. It has been a lot of hard work to see this proud club, who commenced in the VAFA in 1933, return to the upper echelons and it would be great for the competition to see them join rival Bayside club Beaumaris in Premier.
Williamstown CYMS are another great community club success story. They are the only community football club left in Williamstown and their relationship with their VFL club will only be strengthened by their promotion to Premier C. Much of the credit must go to their coach Matthew Montebello who led their juniors in 2012 and progressed with this group coaching the seniors last year to third position and now into the
Grand Final.
I am sounding like a broken record but St Mary’s Salesian have built an outstanding club with a culture that would make many envious. Not only were the seniors and reserves successful on the weekend but the club challenged themselves and entered a team in the Premier C Thirds. They too saluted on the weekend to progress to a third grand fi nal for the club. Congratulations to St Mary’s Salesian President David Malcom and fi rst year coach former North Melbourne and Fremantle player, Jess Sinclair. Jess had a distinguished AFL career playing 192 matches before retiring in 2008.
Hawthorn remain as the only undefeated senior team in the VAFA and fully deserve their promotion to Division 3. After being top of the table last year they were disappointed to fall in straight sets and last Sunday there would have been a few tense moments as West Brunswick hit the lead in the fi nal quarter. They managed to steady and claim victory. The club also has their reserves still alive and the Clubbies went down to the Old Xaverian Crocodiles in Club XVIII Section 1 Grand Final.
The stories of all these clubs are remarkably similar. All have dedicated off fi eld leaders who have patiently built depth into their club. All have either a Thirds or Club XVIII team to add the required depth to their playing roster and all have provided a great environment for the players on and off the fi eld. Four of these fi ve are community clubs who have built a large base of volunteers and are now reaping the rewards of their hard work.
Premier Section joins the fi nals race this weekend with University Blacks taking on St Bernard’s and Old Scotch playing Collegians. Interestingly both of these teams played each other in the last round but with places secure there was a few coaching strategies employed. To give all teams an equal 7 day break leading into the preliminary fi nal these matches will both be played on Saturday at Sportscover Arena and Sandringham respectively. Maybe next year, the Sportscover Arena match will be played at night to avoid the clash.

Hmmm… What was the point exactly of an 18 round season? Well it may have been an inconvenience for both Old Scotch and St Bernards, but for Collegians, Old Trinity, Old Brighton, De La Salle and Old Xaverians there was a lot riding on the results from the weekend. Firstly congratulations to Collegians and De La Salle, the two clubs to fi nish Round 18 with positive news. The Lions locked in a fi nals berth, whilst De La locked in Premier Section football in 2015. Round 18 confi rmed the relegation of Old Brighton. A poor start to their return to Premier costing them in the end, hopefully they will be back soon as it has been a pleasure getting to know everyone at the club this year. Old Scotch spoiled the fun for Old Trinity and to a lesser extent Old Xaverians last Friday night when they fi elded a virtual under age team against Collegains. The Lions cantered home and Old Trinity pondered, what if they had just managed to end that losing streak one game earlier?
The second incarnation of Friday night football proved a vastly more enticing match to attend. The lack of rain and a night that didn’t require thermals greeted the large number of spectators that gathered at Harry Trott. The equation was simple, Collegians had to win to guarantee a fi nals berth, on the other hand if Old Scotch won then the Saturday games would have a lot more riding on it. When the team sheets came through, the disappointment of the neutral supporters and those in Green and Gold that had turned up to support the Cardinals were left fl at. Four debutants and a host of players that had played less than a handful of senior games were on the Old Scotch team sheet. Luckily Shura Taft made his fl ight from China and provided the entertainment with seven fi rst half goals. Despite a strong opening fi ve minutes from the visitors the game was never really a contest. Taft fi nished with 8 for the night, his last goal was his best eff ort, a long range bomb from well beyond 50, taking his tally to a competition high 53 for the year, handing him a leading goal kicker award for the fi rst time in his 12 seasons of brilliance. Of the Cardinals youngsters, U19 player Jonno Daggian and Will Carrington
were impressive, but were ultimately no match for the experience of Tardiff or Ries and the slightly more experienced Lions youth of Apted and Giles.
Just as Old Scotch did the night earlier, St Bernard’s rested or ‘managed’ half their team for their trip to University Blacks. After half time, Blacks showed no mercy as most of their best all played and played well to fi nish the home and away season as minor premiers 15-3. Just like the Cardinals youngsters, St Bernard’s replacements were impressive early. Holding the Blacks goalless in the opener, albeit the home side did have seven scoring shots all going behind the big sticks. Brent Sheehan won a lot of football for Blacks and Peter O’Rourke operated well at both ends of the ground chiming in for a goal. Pattison contributed four goals as Blacks powered away with a 14 goal to 2 second half. Tom Gleeson was again good leading the forward line for the visitors, whilst Alex Singleton was solid throughout. Mind games aside, the tactic of resting so many by Anthony Rock will be revealed as either a winner or a loser when these two meet again at Sportscover for a spot in the Grand Final.
Old Trinity were left with little play for in their match with DE La Salle, almost guaranteeing that will be the fi rst and only time VAFA HQ will permit a Round 18 match on a Friday night when there are ramifi cations for the rest of the comp. Despite this, the T’s put their best foot forward at De La Salle opening up a fi ve goal break at one stage. David Wildsmith, played a game befi tting his appearance as the covershot on the Amateur Footballer, but as the margin was creeping out, De La Salle must have become concerned. There was still relegation to be avoided and their leaders stood up. Sam Williams has had a great full time return to the club as has Matt Fieldsend. Those two along with Tom Humphrey will fi ght out the best and fairest at the Dairy Bell and rightly so. De La couldn’t quite get over the line, but a goal loss and a quick glance at the livescores from Toorak Park left everyone at the Dairy Bell happy in the knowledge they could

In a game that never really reached any great
heights, Old Brighton were in the contest with Old
Xaverians until late in the fi nal term before the home
side kicked away. The Tonners closed to within
seven points of Xavs but couldn’t get the win that
would have salvaged their place in the top fl ight.
Not until the fi nal 10 minutes was the game beyond
the reach of Old Brighton as the experienced and
classy Xavs mids took the contest by the scruff of
the neck to sign off an turbulent season with a
win. Chris Smith returned to the Xavs lineup with
four goals and Matt Handley played but could only
manage 3 of the 8 goals he needed to overhaul Taft.
Daniel Anthony kicked four at the other end whist
Charlie King presented all day and end up with two
goals. Another three votes C Waller?
St Bedes/Mentone Tigers started bravely in pursuit
of a fi nal win of an otherwise ugly year as they
jumped out to a four goal lead at quarter time at
Beaumaris. The Tigers held sway at the main break
before a Shark party in the second half saw them
slot 15 goals to 7 in an open game of football that
had the ball pinging from end to end. Matt Petering
starred with four goals, whilst Anthony Carroll was
prominent. Pat Tyquin capped off a great year with
another four quarter eff ort that will certainly see
him amongst top few of the Tigers B&F.
Thank you to the two clubs (De La Salle and Old
Brighton) that provided a weekly update. They are
most welcome. Good luck to those departing the
comp both this week and for next year. Enjoy the

Uni Blues earned themselves a week off , a spot in the Grand Final and promotion back to Premier with a win against St Kevins whilst Old Carey defeated Old Melburnians and kept their season alive, ending that of OM’s in the process.
Uni Blues held off a hard running St Kevins at Sportscover Arena on Saturday to win their way back to Premier. A moderate breeze blew to the southern end of the ground, and Blues capitalised on it to lead by fi ve goals at quarter time. Tempers boiled over as the siren sounded, and Ben Dowd was red carded in the ensuing melee. SKOB utilised this aggression to dominate contested ball in the second term, steadying the ship with fi ve goals of their own to trail by only 13 points at the main break. A couple of narrowly missed goals late in the quarter hurt SKOB, had they been converted the Tricolours may have enjoyed a possible match defi ning half time lead. SKOB won the third term however, holding Blues to two goals with the wind while converting two goals into it. Over oranges, the Toorak Catholics looked perched to deliver an upset with the wind at their backs for the last term. Although it wasn’t to be, as Blues found another gear and kicked away from their opponents adding fi ve majors to the scoreboard, dominating the play and inside 50s. SKOB’s only goal came from a Billy Kanakis junk time conversion that had no bearing on the game. Pete Summers starred, with plenty of ball and a classy goal, alongside Jack Watts who was a general in defence, as well as Cam Williams in the ruck and Jeremy Mugavin through the middle. Pat Hayes lead the goal kicking tally with three majors.
This is not a death knell for St Kevins, who have the double chance after their round 18 thrashing of the Panthers. Uni Blues have often been slow starters before before dismantling their opposition thereafter, were instead held for three quarters by SKOB, and only ran away with the game in the last. As such, St Kevins proved themselves as capable of running with the Premier B fl ag favourites for three
quarters. A positive they can take into this week and particularly if they can get over Old Carey. Blues on the other hand have won promotion back to Premier only a year after being relegated. Having achieved what was no doubt a pre-season goal, the student’s focus now shifts to the Grand Final and the chance to cap off what could be a near perfect cameo in Premier B.
Sportscover arena was again the theatre for the fi rst semi as Old Carey took down a brave Old Melburnians outfi t last Sunday. In a very similar game to the fi rst semi-fi nal the day before, the more fancied side kicked had fi rst use of a considerably stronger wind than a day prior. The Panthers dobbed six in the fi rst quarter, while Melburnians’ conversion of three meant they probably won a quarter played against their advantage. Melburnians bagged fi ve in the second term and held Carey to one, to go into half time with a seven point lead and the game was theirs for the taking. After a rousing Glenn Cox half time address that stressed composure, run, and bravery, Carey were able to move the ball away from the Golf Course wing in the third term, which had become a dead spot as the cross wind blew into it, scoring a number of goals through the middle in the premiership quarter. An end to end rebound goal converted by Cam Howat from outside fi fty thanks to a gutsy Joel Rice handball and hip-and-shoulder eff ort typifi ed the Carey running game that refl ected their coaches words and probably proved the diff erence in this period. Only 23 points down, OM’s were absolutely a chance at the last break however, as they would kick with what the commentary box had proclaimed a fi ve goal wind. Ultimately they were unable to convert, kicking six behinds, many from the aforementioned dead pocket and only managed two majors. Cox’s strategy of playing Ben Smithwick as the stay at home full forward paid off for the Panthers, Smithwick snaring two goals as Carey kicked three straight into the wind to sure up victory and a prelim berth. the clear best on ground, complemented by Lachy McQueen-Miscamble alternating in the ruck and CHB, Steve Fremantle won contested footy all day whilst Ryan Bongetti culled the infl uential Tom Paule,.
After letting the double chance slip through their fi ngers, Carey will surely be happy with a win that places them on level terms with this week’s opponent St Kevin’s OB. Melburnians, contrastingly, should be happy with their performance. They won the fi rst half against a harder bodied and more experienced Panthers outfi t before simply being outplayed. Valiant all day, take nothing away from the young Melburnians outfi t who will be even stronger next season.
This week’s death match at Sportscover Arena is huge for both sides. Carey will be eager to elevate themselves back into Premier after being the second best team for much of the year, while SKOB

are desperate to win their fi rst senior fi nal in a
decade and gain a hard fought A-Grade berth. The
passion and size of the crowd at Elsternwick Park
last Saturday proved the hunger and culture this
club possess. SKOB certainly go in as favourites for
mine, their 70-point win over a full strength Carey
outfi t gives them that tag. However, that was a
very diff erent game, with far less on the line. Who
ever wins this week will certainly know about it,
this is after all the hardest game to win in amateur
football. If you’re anywhere near Elsternwick
Park on Sunday, get down to watch what will be
the most impassioned and ferocious contest in
Premier B all year. I’m tipping SKOB by four points
in a classic.

The Rovers will enjoy the luxury of a week off after disposing of Marcellin by 34 points on Saturday at Trevor Barker Oval. Opportunities to play in Grand Finals don’t come around very often, but try telling that to the Hampton Rovers, who will now play in their second consecutive Grand Final in two weeks time. The win has also granted the Rovers promotion to Premier B for next season. In the Sunday game, Monash Blues were overrun by a fast fi nishing Parkdale outfi t, this despite kicking eight of the fi rst nine goals in the match. A year after being relegated from Premier B, Parkdale get their opportunity to bounce back up a grade this weekend.
Hampton Rovers proved too strong for minor premiers Marcellin at the newly revamped Trevor Barker Oval. The game ebbed and fl owed for the majority of the afternoon with both sides enjoying periods of dominance. But as the game wore on, it was Hampton who had the staying power. The Rovers started the match, the way they fi nished it, with intent. They piled on six goals to one in the opening quarter to set the tone for the afternoon, on the back of a dominant tackle count of 20-12. The Eagles failed to make any inroads in the second term, despite the best eff orts of Trent Carlson and Anthony Beaini. Three goals a piece for the quarter had the Rovers in front by 28 points.
The wind wreaked havoc in the third term as it changed direction favouring the Eagles for two consecutive quarters. The change in conditions saw the Eagles slam on fi ve unanswered goals in 15 minutes to have all the momentum leading into the fi nal change. The Marcellin midfi elders, led by Jarrod Carlson lifted their work rate, and delivered to their forwards with precision. McPherson (3) and Bortolotto (3) the benefi ciaries of some hard work up the fi eld.
The stage was set for an epic fi nal term. With the Eagles dominating the inside 50 count and controlling much of the game, the Rovers needed to produce a special fi nal 30 minutes. And that they did. With the aid of a strong wind and an opposition reduced to two rotations, the Rovers booted fi ve fi nal quarter goals to put the game beyond doubt. In his fi rst game back since
returning form overseas, Daniel Corp was pivotal in the fi nal term, kicking back-to-back goals to extend the Rovers advantage. Marcellin’s leading goal kicker for the year, Dominic Bolger was held goalless by Rich Atkins. Christian Carnovale also played his best game for the year, and what a stage to do it on. Ed Turner’s fi ve goals were the diff erence, including the sealer.
In two weeks time, the Rovers will be aiming to win back-to-back premierships for the fi rst time since 1946-47. Fortunately for Marcellin they have another chance to redeem themselves this Saturday against Parkdale.
With Mad Monday festivities getting underway as I write for many clubs today, there would be an eerie feeling hovering over the Monash Blues. As the postmortem gets underway, the Blues will be licking their wounds and asking themselves what happened after they coughed up a match winning lead. The 12 point loss, sent the Blues to their second straight early exit from the fi nals in two years.
It was all one-way traffi c in the fi rst term as the Blues made full use of a Trevor Barker breeze. The Vultures looked stunned, allowing Monash to launch a brutal fi rst term assault, which saw them 32 points clear at the fi rst change. The Blues were ferocious around the contest, continually coming in hard off the line to put the Vulture players under pressure. Petering and Cosgriff were lively up forward, creating numerous scoring chances. An Alex Carr major six minutes into the second term saw the Blues lead 8.2.50 to 1.1.7. Fast forward to the 27th minute mark and the Vultures only trailed by a goal. Six unanswered goals had the Vultures right back in the hunt with a Paul Sullivan snap deep in the pocket the catalyst in the resurgence. The Vultures lifted their willingness to work for each other, Shaun Chapman a product of that mentality, continually cutting off any Monash forward foray. The Vultures were down by fi ve points at the main break.
Nathan Papatsanis who has enjoyed a stellar last month, was instrumental in the Vulture revival, kicking three goals all in the second term. While midfi elders Liam Platt (2) and Charlie Dillon (2) were outstanding all day. The third term developed into a stalemate with neither side able to have any impact on the scoreboard. Monash could only manage one major for the term, failing

to capitalize with the wind. A goal to Ben Amberg was the only highlight for the term, as the Blues broke free from the congestion.
A Petering soccer, as he pounced on a loose crumb opened the Blues account in the fi nal term but their joy was short-lived. The Monash defenders were under immense pressure as the Vultures went on the attack. As the quarter progressed the Vultures could smell victory. The Blues struggled to clear their defensive fi fty, as Lopo stalked his prey, unrelenting in his pursuit. Two fi nal quarter goals to Charlie Dillon enough to get the Vultures home.

Marcellin holds the mental edge over the Vultures having beaten them in both encounters this year; In round 2 the Eagles got home by 28 points and in Round 10 they won by 60 points. However the
Vultures possess the best form coming into the
match. Both teams will be feeling the pressure
and have something to prove, but more so the
Eagles, facing the added burden of another
potential straight sets exit from the fi nals.
This is the third consecutive year the Eagles
have made the fi nals in Premier C without fi ring
a shot. A win and subsequent promotion would
be fi tting, a loss disastrous. Similarly though,
the Vultures would be determined to return to
Premier B after being relegated last year. I’m
tipping the Vultures in a close one.

elected to donate $250 to MND Australia, he

University Blues have won the Winning Edge
Club Championship after St Bernard’s failed to
win in any of their fi nal home and away matches
from the weekend against University Blacks. St
Bernard’s lost the championship to Blues who
had fi nished their season a week prior and
were relying on their rivals and neighbours
Uni Blacks to do them a favour by beating the
Snowdogs in at least the seniors and reserves.
The Blues fi nal margin of two points meant that
St Bernard’s needed for only their seniors to win,
or alternatively a reserve and thirds win against
Blacks would have seen the Championship head
to West Essendon. Who would have thought that
Blacks would be helping out Blues by winning
all three games as both clubs continue to lead
the way in the top two sections of the VAFA
this year. Uni Blues’ fi nal winning total of 144 is
one of the lowest in recent seasons. Points are
awarded on 4 points for a senior win, 2 points
for a reserve win, 3 points for your number 1
U19 team and 1 point for your number 1 Thirds

Williamstown CYMS delivered a performance few, besides their loyal fans and the playing group themselves could ever have predicted. The CY’s secured promotion to Premier C for the fi rst time in their history and a spot in the Grand Final by beating Therry Penola in the 2nd Semi-Final at Bill Lawry Oval. The CY’s handing the 18-0 Therry Penola from the regular season, a fi rst loss in 20 matches. At crucial times Williamstown were able to steady their nerve and hit targets and drill majors, along with sticking fat when Therry surged home in the last to win by 36-points. On Sunday, NOBS/St Pats were knocked out of the fi nals race by Old Geelong by 24-points. The OG’s now face Therry Penola for the remaining spot in the Grand Final, Williamstown CYMS earn a weekend off .
From the fi rst quarter, Therry Penola looked uneasy whether it was with ball in hand going forward or defending. Brock Egglestone had the key matchup on Jack Gray, and was punished early, being caught holding the ball before his opponent took the pack mark and kicked truly moments later. Matt John increased the lead to 21 with his second before Corey Bannister replied to end the fi rst term. In the second, Jarrod and Corey Bannister started to get involved, both marking and goaling early in the quarter to reduce the margin to three-points. It was Williamstown’s turn to struggle to maintain possession, but with the last three goals including a late steadier by Jack Gray a 22-point buff er was regained. Therry Penola were unable to contain Gray as he kicked another and the scoreboard started getting ugly. With a lead of 34 and turnovers aplenty, good passages of play were almost impossible to come by for the minor premiers.
Brenton Egglestone was on the receiving end of their best for the day and for the fi rst time in a long time Therry hit consecutive targets. Therry were being forced to play along the boundary and quickly ran out of room due to Williamstown’s repeated pressure acts. This was the CY’s golden ticket, and saw their players begin to run harder than the opposition. Matt John highlighted this, running into the forward 50 unmarked and slotted the goal. Advantage Williamstown by 35. Jarrod
Bannister responded with converting from a free kick, while Brenton Egglestone had the opportunity to take the momentum into the fi nal quarter with a shot after the siren but missed. Down by 28-points at the start of the last, Therry Penola fi nally shifted into gear. It took three and a bit quarters but Therry truly switched on with three quick goals including a Jarrod Bannister blinder from the boundary line chalk to bring Therry back to a 10-point defi cit. Corey had the chance to make it 4-points but the kick faded right. Williamstown proved they had ticker, and wasn’t going to let Therry steal victory, ending the game with four unanswered goals to silence the ravenous comeback and claim victory. Ryan Danaher was best on ground with his outstanding performance down back, Jack Gray and Matt John ended with four apiece, while captain Ben Gray deserves a mention for his job on Jarrod Bannister.
Semi-Final 1 was a very diff erent game to Saturday’s game as the blustery conditions at Bill Lowry Oval caused havoc for both sides. Paul Tucker opened proceedings for Old Geelong before the ball had even been in the NOBS/St Pats forward half. The Nobs replied to being two goals down with two of their own before OG’s big man Tom Wigan kicked his fi rst. Wigan was the focal point early, rag-dolling his opponent taking his third mark and third shot at goal for the game.
Matt Keown got on the scorecard in the second, reducing the defi cit to four-points. The game was back and forth with deep penetration into their forward fi fties lacking at both ends. Old Geelong started controlling the contest, and converted their shots. Meanwhile, the Nobs had considerably more chances but couldn’t even register a score in any of their fi ve entries. A constant theme throughout the match. This butchering of the ball saw the Nobs down 30-44 at halftime. The conditions created sloppy play throughout the game as using the ball by foot was somewhat of a nightmare, especially for NOBSPC. The missing of targets continued as the game was being played

at the Nobs end but they couldn’t get the much needed majors. Old Geelong on the other hand could, and added on two more, including Wigan, manhandling his opponent in the goalsquare and converting, to lead by 27-points. If there was going to be a saviour for NOBSPC, it was Matt Chapman who ended with a game-high fi ve goals. He was ever so dangerous, sparking a resurgence with back-to-back goals early in the last. Brad Holland did as Corey Bannister’s had done the previous day and missed a shot at goal to get his side within four-points. And as Williamstown did to Therry, Old Geelong did to NOBS/St Pats. OG’s charged and fi nished the contest. Captain, Colby O’Brien sealed victory with a late goal as his team moves on to the Preliminary Final. John Forster was B.O.G while Josh Hoevenaars played an incredible game in the ruck.

took the long way round last year and still went on to gain promotion and win the Grand Final. Can they do it again? If they play like last weekend, the answer is no. The OG’s can beat Therry Penola, although it is Therry’s to lose depending on their performance. I am predicting Therry Penola to get a second shot at Williamstown CYMS in the Grand Final, earn back-to-back promotions and defeat Old Geelong by fi ve goals.

St Mary’s Salesian proved on Saturday just
what they’re capable of, with a commanding
display of fi nals football. They’re the form side
of Division 2 and hadn’t beaten Kew this year...
until last Saturday. Jess Sinclair would have
drilled into his side that Kew had to beaten at
least once, if not twice, if they were to deliver
a fl ag back to Ferndale Park. Their semi fi nal
performance was that of a side on top of its
game, with its sight set on greater glory.
It was clear the Saints were on from the opening
bounce, the contest was willing early; with both
sides showing their intent but Kew couldn’t
sustain it. St Mary’s were resolute down back,
led by Tanner and Gatehouse; while Latsas and
Dudgeon were industrious in the middle; and
Rogers damaging up forward. They held a 19
point lead at the fi rst change and were ideally
placed. Kew had no answers and the Bears were
a shell of the side that were so dominant early
in the year. The Saints hit another gear in the
second, banging home fi ve goals to one and
looked set for a week off and a Grand Final berth.
To Kew’s credit they came out after half-time
with great vigour and attempted to peg back
the lead. The margin seemed insurmountable
with the Bears eight goals in arrears. Both sides
kicked three in the last as the Saints held the
Bears at bay and saluted by 48 points. It was a
professional performance. The result was not a
surprise, but the ease at which it came was. St
Mary’s Salesian will rest their heels, content in
the knowledge that they may have one hand on
the cup. For Kew they will know that they played
nowhere near its best last Saturday and will hit
the prelim against Turtles with greater attitude
and intent.
Old Eltham and Old Paradians entered the 1st
Semi-Final on Sunday at Highgate Reserve
knowing that nothing more than a win would
suffi ce. Conditions were blustery out at
Craigieburn and the match was scrappy as a
result. The Raiders started the better and were
intent on denying the Turtles the ball and so
slowed the game down. In a low scoring aff air
Paradians kicked the only goal of the fi rst and
held a slender three point lead. Unfortunately
for the Raiders that’s where the good news
ended. The Turtles started to control the tempo
of the game and capitalise when going forward.
They kicked three goals to one and took a seven
point lead into the main break.
It was much the same in the third term, as Old
Eltham went forward early and two goals to
Sab Ciavolla and opened up a commanding
31 point lead in a low scoring aff air. Lendaro
and Switkowski were solid in the clinches
and their pressure around the ball fi rst-class.
Matthew Crooks was excellent in ruck, and
impassable around the ground. The last quarter
was a scrap as James Kandilakis wasn’t going
to die wondering and the lion-hearted Sean
Miller tried to will the Raiders over the line.
Unfortunately it was too much left to too few,
and even though they peppered the goals,
they never looked dangerous. The Turtles were
the better side all-day and were led superbly
by Michael Hargrave in fi nal term, whose fi rst,
second and third eff orts personifi ed his team’s
will to win. Old Eltham are one win away from a
Grand Final berth and will need to play at their
absolute best to get over Kew at Bill Lawry Oval.
For both Kew and Old Eltham it all comes down
to this. Games like this are where reputations
can be enhanced or diminished and a “win at all
costs” be taken into every 50/50 contest. As they

allowed the time and space as they were last
Sunday will cause the Bears some headaches.
Matthew Crooks holds the key and if he gives
his midfi elders fi rst use then the Turtles can gain
the ascendancy. It is fl ip of the coin for mine with
the Bears getting over the line in a nail-biter.

say “pressure creates diamonds” and it will be at
its peak for two hours from the time the ball is
bounced until the fi nal siren sounds. Both sides
have held the title as “the form side” at certain
stages this year and will head into the clash
confi dent that their best is good enough. In the
mentality stakes, the Bears will be stinging after
their loss last week, while the Turtles’ confi dence
will be at an all time high. If they’re to win, the
Turtles will need to start better than they did
last week because if allowed to play the game
on their own terms, the Bears will carve them
up. On the other side of the coin, the Bears
will want to start well because if the Turtles are
given a sniff they will run over the top.
The keys to victory for Kew are their ability to
control the ball, win the contested ball and
capitalise when going forward. Andrew Brazzale
lacked support last week and you can’t see Ian
Aitken letting that happen again. Bishop and
Leeds will have their hands full with Ciavolla
and Harper and will need pressure on the ball
coming in to make their job easier. For the
Turtles they have all the momentum. They can
match it in the midfi eld with the Bears and if

Division 3 fi nals were always destined for some
twists and turns. With the ever-threatening
Richmond Central lurking in fi fth position, it was
naïve to think that the Snakes were going to go
down without a fi ght. This weekend the four
best teams the Division has to off er will go head
to head in matches too close to call. If teams
have been aiming to time their fi nals runs to
perfection, now would be a good time to begin
fi ring on all cylinders.
REVIEWThe Northern Blues began their fi nals campaign
in emphatic fashion by defeating the sixth
seeded Albert Park Falcons by 67-points at
Meade Reserve on Sunday. The Blues put the
result well beyond doubt after an 11-goal
third quarter placed them 96-points clear at
three quarter time. The Falcons kicked fi ve
unanswered goals in the fi nal term, however it
did little besides add some respectability to the
scoreboard in their season ending encounter.
Lachlan Holmes saved his best work for the
match, kicking a season high four majors while
Todd Beames added fi ve goals in his second
game back from injury. Co-Captain Dean
Calcedo led from the front with his signature
run and carry through the middle of the ground.
James Brick – who was the Falcons only multiple
goal kicker with three goals - was best on
ground for Albert Park. The heavy defeat sours
a resilient season for Albert Park who battled
back inside the top six following a seven game
winning streak late in the year.
Richmond Central continued their scintillating
form to cause the upset of the qualifying fi nals,
defeating Emmaus St Leos by 11-points in a
spirited win at St Bernard’s College on Sunday.
The Animals carried a three goal lead into half-
time but couldn’t hold on, as the Snakes stormed
from the race with the intent of making better
use of their disposal and the conditions after the
major break. Richmond registered 13 scoring
shots to Emmaus’ one in the third quarter then
held onto their three quarter-time lead in a
hard-fought fi nal quarter. The Snakes ability to
quell the impact of star forwards Chris Beluszar
and Ryan Harding – just one goal between them
- was signifi cant in the result. Daniel Hill stepped
up in their place with four goals while Anthony
Ballard was stellar all contest. For the Snakes,
Luke Carland was dominant alongside Steve
Bugeja (three goals) in their win. As the highest
ranked loser in the qualifying fi nals, Emmaus
will activate the double chance and face the
Northern Blues in the preliminary fi nals.
Five goals from centre half-forward Jai Perrett
steered Aquinas into a preliminary fi nal after
they defeated Swinburne University by 51 points
at Meade Reserve on Saturday. The Bloods
won the all-important toss of the coin as wind
stirred before the match, using it at their backs
to kick away to a 31-point lead at quarter time.
Swinburne were able to get back within striking
distance at the half, however Aquinas kicked
away yet again in the third to seal their place in
the next round. Michael Jess and Captain Leigh
Toomey were dominant all afternoon for the
Bloods while Sam Williams kicked three goals
deep in the forward line. For Swinburne, Jye
Bunge kicked four majors in a best-on-ground
eff ort while Zac Scrase added two goals in a
resilient match. Ash Woodhead fi nished off
his stellar season for the Razorbacks with yet
another fantastic performance. Swinburne
were forced to wait until Sunday afternoon to
discover their fate, bowing out of fi nals action

This match-up was my grand-fi nal prediction
last week however top six fi nals series can
conjure up strange outcomes. First will play
second for a place in Division 2 next season in
a match where one club will be left feeling like
they’ve fallen short of expectations in 2014. The
Blues and the Animals met twice during the
regular season, where they split the results one
win each. Northern will need to stem the impact
of forward Chris Beluszar who kicked seven
goals in their second meeting to increase their
chance of winning. The Animal’s will be weary
of team of the year half-forward James King
who stung them for fi ve in the same contest at
Bennettswood Reserve. Paul Baranello featured
in the bests in both contests and combined for
six goals across the two matches.
Aquinas v Richmond Central
The Snakes are now on a six-game winning
streak spanning back to a victory against
the Northern Blues in late July. Aquinas has
quietly put together their own great run of
form, winning fi ve of their last six contests
respectively. Aquinas and Richmond only met
once during the year, with Aquinas coming
away with a seven-point victory at Kevin
Bartlett Reserve in Round 7. That loss was a
part of a fi ve-game losing streak for the Snakes
that nearly cost them a place in fi nals action.
Aquinas’ goal kickers Jai Perrett and Jack
Price were both at their best that afternoon,
combining for eight majors while Russell Foster
was rock solid all match. Richmond received big
eff orts from Ricky Costanzo and Dane Roy in
the loss, who will both need to fi re if they are to
secure a grand-fi nal berth this Saturday.

Finals fever swept Division 4 over the weekend with two absolute humdingers at Garvey Oval. On Saturday, the undefeated favourites Hawthorn faced their closest competition throughout the year West Brunswick. On Sunday it was another highly anticipated snake fi ght between competition newcomers, Canterbury and veterans, Manningham.
A spot in Division 3 awaited the winner of the second semi fi nal at Garvey Oval on Saturday. With the disappointment of 2013 gnawing away in the back of their minds, Hawthorn were never going to take a chance for promotion for granted. Despite Hawthorn’s home and away form earning them ‘un-backable favourite’ status, the Pies lifted for the occasion and provided Hawthorn their stiff est competition of the season.
The fi rst quarter was an arm-wrestle which saw the underdogs lead at the break by the barest of margins. Hawthorn got their noses in front in the second and kept a grasp on their lead at three quarter time. Hawthorn looked destined to do what they had managed in both previous meetings with West Brunswick, escaping to a healthy lead in the fi nal quarter. They were met however, with an unprecedented Magpie resilience as the margin was reeled back by the twenty minute mark to have scores level.
Hawthorn, eager to put the demons of 2013 to rest, did what great teams do and found a way to win it. West Brunswick should take great heart from their performance, as they stuck with the Hawks and pushed them all the way. If the Pies can produce a similar display next week, it would be reasonable to suggest that we will see them take on the Hawks again in the Grand Final. Notable feats for the Pies were their ability to keep team of the year forward Sam Gold goalless and the performances of young gun Luke Buckler and stalwart Nick Mitchell.
Off the back of an incredible run, Hawthorn will return to Division 3 next season after their controversial fall from grace two seasons ago.
Despite this sensational achievement, they’re hungry for silverware. With talk that some of their stars could be nearing the end of their career at Rathmines, nothing less than a Premiership will do for Luke Mather’s men.
Another tightly contested snake fi ght was just what the doctor ordered for week one of the fi nals. Whilst the game was tightly contested throughout, similarly to the fi nal round of the home and away season, Manningham will be left to rue a slow start. Manningham’s Michael Muller made up for lost time fi nding the middle of the big sticks on fi ve occasions through the afternoon. At the other end of the ground, Tom Eckersley collected three majors in a brilliant afternoon at the offi ce.
A rally from Manningham in the second kept the game on reasonably level terms for the rest of the afternoon, once again proving they are capable of mixing it with the top sides when they produce their best football. Particularly at this end of the season however, you have to be able to do that for four quarters. That said, they had opportunities to win the game in the last two minutes, however despite wayward form in front of goal, Canterbury fi nished up king cobras to the tune of seven points. A fi nals fi nish none the less is a big tick for Manningham and a platform for them to build on for next season.
Canterbury now have the opportunity to cap off an incredible debut VAFA season with immediate promotion, their reward should they fi nd a way to get past West Brunswick this Sunday. Their all-or-nothing excitable brand of football has been a welcome addition to the competition this year and they’ll be hoping to take it up the Divisions with a win over the Pies this week.
So after week one of the fi nals, Hawthorn have a week to cool their heels, Manningham have six months to cool theirs and Canterbury

or West Brunswick will join Hawthorn in the Grand Final AND Division 3 when they play off at Garvey Oval this Sunday. Both sides that play this weekend have come off the back of tight contests so the result could boil down to which side recovers better. That said, I’m tipping consistent intensity to endure over moments of swashbuckling brilliance in such an important game. That consistency is something that West Brunswick seems to have found based on their gallant display against the Hawks. Canterbury is certainly capable, but for mine West Brunswick by two or three goals.

Once the fi nals start it is certainly a whole, new ball game and A Section was no exception. In the fi rst
semi, Uni Blues were too strong for St Bedes Mentone Tigers and won the right to challenge in the prelim fi nal against De La Salle who were defeated by Old Xaverians, 19.14 to 5.6. Old Xavs had lowered their colours in round 18 to Collegians but certainly raised the standard once the fi nals were underway.
The B Section prelim was a huge win to Old Trinity over St Kevins 16.18 to 6.7. Scoring 7.5 to nil in the fi rst quarter with the wind, it was a great start by the OT’s. SKOBS didn’t manage to score in the last term with the wind! Best: Healey, Ramsden (6), Cultrera (4), Jessop, Eckersley, Chivers (OY) and Edgar, Keely, Williams, Aughton, Sheehy, Garvey (StK).
10 YEARS AGO – 2004
In B Section, Collegians celebrated their return to A Section for the following season by defeating Old Ivanhoe in very tough conditions 5.3 to 3.8. At three quarter time Old Ivanhoe’s inaccuracy was noted as Collegians had 4.1 on the board compared with 3.7. The scores remained tied at the end of the fi nal quarter but Collegians prevailed in extra time with 1.1 to nil. Best: Shinkfi eld, Davidson, Hosking, Harrison, A Baxter, Dixon (Coll) and Low, Weddle, Crowley. Clarke, Price, Bozzon (OI).
20 YEARS AGO – 1994
The Old Melburnians earned their right to compete in an A Section Grand Final for the fi rst time in 33 seasons when they defeated Collegians in the second semi fi nal 14.19 to 12.8. The OM’s had been 5 goals down at the fi rst break but were far too strong for their opposition in the remaining three quarters. Best: Bromell, Bryan, Webb, O’Brien, Susa, Handbury (OM) and Laussen, Schober (4), Bennett, Phillips, Harrison, Davidson (Collegians).
In C Section, St Kilda/Sth Caulfi eld fi nished Old Geelong’s season with a 14.21 to 12.11 prelim fi nal win. Ralph Bergman (interstate representative in 1994) with 6 goals was a key to the win. St Kevins secured a place in C
Section for 1995 when they overwhelmed Old Camberwell 15.20 to 8.11. Best: Brady, Fraser (7), Gross, Terzini, Chapman, Mulcahy (StK) and Taylor, Hetherington, Kyriacou, Morris, Kerklviet, Ewart (OC).
30 YEARS AGO – 1984
In A Section it was a fantastic 2nd semi between Ormond and De La Salle. De La held a 6 goal lead at half time but Ormond, played a great third term and set the scene for a great last quarter. It was De La’s defence that held fi rm to enable them to win by 5 points. This win would enable the D’s to play in their 6th A Grade Grand Final in 8 seasons. Best: Lowe (6), Murphy (4), Greene, Harrington, Czerkaski, Connolly (DLS) and Burke, A Mehrten, Barnes, Ritchie, McAsey, Beard (Ormond).
40 YEARS AGO – 1974
The A Section 2nd semi was a thriller as Ormond held on to win by 1 point over arch rivals, Coburg, 19.10 to 18.15. Best: Ladd (7), Cameron, Russ, Adrian Graham, Alan Graham (Ormond) and Hughes, Handley, Cleary, Wharfe (6) for Coburg.
Fawkner moved into the E Section Grand Final with a convincing win over AMP Society 20.23 to 15.12. Best: Stewart, Cash (7), M Stapleton (5), Nanscawen (Fawkner) and P Henderson, Roulston (8), Cribbes (3), Gates (AMP).
50 YEARS AGO – 1964
Two very young teams, Old Paradians and Old Xaverians, respective average ages 22.2 and 21.5, played in the A Section 2nd semi at the South Melbourne Cricket Ground. The oldest player in the game was Paradians’ John Booth (28). The Xavs wore down their opposition in the second half after it was level scores at half time. Final score 12.19 to 10.4. Best: Stanley, Meagher, Malone, Capes, B Gibson, N Gibson (OX) and Boyle, Weyman, Sheehy, Quinlan, Pickett, Williams (OP).
Assumption won the E Section preliminary fi nal against the Cassie Club, 13.16 to 7.12. Best: Higgins (3), Goudie, Forrest, Morden, Caldwell, Evans (Assump) and Constance (3), Lolatgis, Burke, Jackamos, Papadatos, Lucas (Cassie).

It was fi nals week in the Under 19s and Dairy Bell was the venue for both of the fi nals, starting with the elimination game between the Old Xaverians and Beaumaris. It
was a hardly fought contest early on, but after quarter time Xavs took the ascendency, Jeremy Hannan was terrifi c all day for Xavs kicking 5 goals, fl ying for everything, while Tom Wynne turned it on in the second half with 4 goals of his own after coach Pete Callinan asked him to lift at half time. Cannon, Anderson and Sleeman were outstanding. Beauy had a great year and worked
all day but couldn’t get there, Smout booted 2 and Cusack and Johns were outstanding for them. 19.14-128 to 8.13.61 was the fi nal score.
In the top of the table clash St Bernards went in favourites against St Kevin’s, but SKOBs booted the fi rst goal and looked sharp. SKOBs had an insane 2nd term, kicking 7 goals to 1 and couldn’t be run down from there. The upset of the fi nals so far, SKOB head to a Grand Final and Bernards get their second chance against Xavs. For St Kevin’s Kennedy and Lewin kicked 3 and Turnbull was their best. Dillon kicked 2 for Bernards with Riley and Woods were their best. 99-67 was the fi nal score.

University Blues have sealed their place in the Grand Final with an emphatic 52-point victory over Whitefriars. Level at halftime, an 8-goal third term by Blues, while holding Whitefriars scoreless, was the
diff erence. Blues’ Charles Craig (4 goals) was at his scintillating best, while David Cumming was as solid as ever. Whitefriars Tim Nilsson was amongst his side’s top contributors while Luke Sandy was dangerous with 2 goals.
Old Trinity despatched Parkdale Vultures with a no nonsense second half, eventually running out
42-point winners. Scores were level at the main break and it looked like an upset was possible after a dazzling start from the Vultures, but Old Trinity began to show their class. Trinity’s Seb Nicolosi was a match winner with 4 goals while Simon Emerson carried his season form into the fi nals. Parkdale’s Mac O’Donnell put in a great performance in and around the packs as well as ruckman, Will McGowan, who battled hard.
Whitefriars now play Old Trinity for the remaining spot in the Grand Final. The fi rst-placed Whitefriars will hope to bounce back from their disappointing loss but the class of Old Trinity will be a tough test to pass. It could go either way.

Williamstown CYMS took on
Old Ivanhoe at Chelsworth
Park. Old Ivanhoe led all day
and seemed to have a comfortable break at three
quarter time with the CY’s kicking only three goals
up to then. But the visitors came hard in the last
but just couldn’t quite bridge the gap, Old Ivanhoe
held on to win by 9 points. Pierri kicked 3 goals,
Gough kicked 2 and Erman was best on ground.
For Williamstown Knight, Christakakis and Ebinger
all kicked 2 goals and Morris was best for the CY’s.
In the semi fi nal Old Carey hosted Marcellin and it
was Marcellin that came away with a convincing
65 point win, which ended Old Carey’s season.
Old Carey were never really in it, unable to cut
the margin at any point, they only managed to
kicked two goals after half time. Burns kicked 4
and Tomat, Di Roberto and Robertson all kicked
3 goals for Marcellin and Lunn was best. For Old
Carey Harris, Nixon, Wooldridge and Wallace all
kicked 2 goals and Akec was amongst their better
players. With Old Ivanhoe straight into the grand
fi nal they can sit back and wait for the winner of
Williamstown CYMS and Marcellin.

It was up and down all day at
Goddard St for Banyule and
Wyndham Suns, but it was
the Suns that came out in
front by just two points. After
being 12 points down after the
fi rst quarter, Wyndham had a big second term,
which saw them gain a 20-point lead going into
the second half. Banyule responded strongly,
ensuring their opposition did not score a single
point, while they kicked fi ve goals. It was down to
the wire in the fi nal term and whilst both teams
didn’t convert all their shots, it was Wyndham
Suns who will play St Bernards in the Preliminary
fi nal this Saturday. Ryan and Iannacone can be

three-quarter time, never relinquished their fi ght,
ensuring St Bernard’s did not score in the fi nal
term. St Bernard’s will be hardened by a tough
game and have a second chance to get through

Oakleigh lost against top team Ormond, going down by 74 points. Ormond appeared to sail through the game, showing class and fi nesse and kept Ormond at bay to win their way
to a Grand Final. Ormond restricted Oakleigh to just one goal in the fi rst half, whilst they kicked ten. Five of Ormond’s players kicked two goals for the day and six others kicked one. Ormond’s Halsall and Holten were great performers on the day and will look to keep their form as they advance to the Grand Final. Oakleigh can be trusted to fi ght back hard for a second chance as they play
Hampton today. De La Salle were forced to play catch up against Hampton Rovers as they trailed them for the duration of the game to lose by 24 points. Hampton got off to a good start, setting themselves up with a 11 point lead in the fi rst term and only increased it from thereon in despite a hard fi ght from De La. De La tried desperately in the fi nal term, but could not convert their goals, managing 7 behinds in the last term. Jones kicked six for Hampton, with Roberston and Cullis being the most notable performers for Rovers. Rovers season is alive when they meet the Krushers in the prelim.

People talk about the joy and glory of ‘fi nals
time year round. It’s the fabled month at the
end of every footy season when players and
clubs forge legacies and premiers are crowned.
Some years, the weather joins the party, others
it doesn’t in spectacular fashion.
This year, Mother Nature smiled down on the
fi rst weekend of the VAFA fi nals series (Premier
B through to Colts) and people couldn’t stop
talking about it. “Looking forward to pulling
on the fl ats this weekend,” was a common
utterance at VAFAUA training. “Gee, how ‘bout
this weather?” “Wish it was like this every week!”
Both days were spectacular as were some of
the venues. A particular highlight was the party
atmosphere provided by the boys from Aquinas
as they cranked up the techno music behind
the goals at Clayton on Saturday. Sandringham
is looking a treat and Sportscover Arena with its
new portable terracing is gearing up for a great
Premier fi nals series. Take it all in, folks, because
goodness knows this is Melbourne in footy
season. Who knows what will happen next
week? We’re not just talking about the weather.

Similar to during the season, the Nodders were all class and started the match strongly, having a six goal lead at the main break. The third term was low scoring with both teams only managing one goal apiece. The fi nal term was much the same, as the Nodders extended their lead to 53 points. Power forward Kieran McKeogh and Fabio D’Alfonso kicked three each, whilst Joel Comito was best for the Snowdogs. The victory will give the Nodders that extra bit of confi dence heading into the big dance in two weeks’ time
In the second semi, it was a close knit aff air early between Westbourne Grammarians and Point Cook. The margin never crept out of reach in the fi rst half, as the Grammarians had the lead at quarter time by 8 points and led by 14 points at the main break. In the second half, the match was a blowout as the Warriors dominated, keeping their opponents to two behinds as they kicked six goals to push the margin out to 54 points, which set up their 46 point victory. University Blues Football Club
Applications for the 2015 positions of
Reserve, Thirds, Under 19 and Assistant Coaches
The successful applicants will have a good understanding of football and VAFA football in particular.
The applicants will have a minimum Level 1 AFL Coaching Accreditation and will be a strong
communicator being able to demonstrate an ability to work as part of a broader off-field team.
The VAFA have done the right thing by the two fi rst semi fi nalists and scheduled their match for Saturday. Whilst Old Scotch and Collegians will not play at Sportscover Arena, the winner will get a seven day break heading into the Preliminary Final. The data tells us this is more important than playing the match at HQ. No 1st Semi Final winner has progressed to the Grand Final since the Premier Finals series was reduced to three weeks.
What do we learn from Old Scotch and St Bernard’s fi elding a weakened side last week against opponents they meet this week?
St Bernard’s know their best is good enough to beat Blacks as was evidenced when they defeated the minor premiers at the Snakepit earlier this year. Blacks though, despite having led the competition for most of the year have improved further since then. The biggest change is the scoring force Blacks have become. They are the only side to average over 100 points per game, yet their leading goal kicker (Adam Pattison) fi nished seventh on the charts with 35 goals from 16 games. Whilst Cameron Roberts would like to have Pattison fi ring, Blacks certainly don’t need him to be a focal point. There are seven Blacks players averaging at least a goal a game.
St Bernard’s should be too concerned about their own ability to score either. On any given day one of Jones, Gleeson or Merrington are a chance of catching fi re and can kick a bag. St Bernard’s for all their dominance this year, have rarely put sides to the sword. Perhaps they are happy to work on game style once the game has been controlled but perhaps it is the fact they have such good forwards. When you have such great forwards, the coaching team would be telling players to stay out of the forward arcs, to leave space. This probably means the midfi elders and even the half back line have been less prone to fl oating forward to kick a goal.
On numbers alone, Blacks should win this contest. They are ranked number 1 in both defence for points conceded and attack for points kicked.
They have won the most games, haven’t lost at home and enter September having played two tough fi nals last year. St Bernard’s are fresh and should enter with optimism; they also have a very experienced coach who has been there before.
Collegians will be bullish about their chances against Old Scotch on the back of last week. However as already discussed the Cardinals could draft in up to 11 players into their 22. Last year Old Scotch played Blacks in rd 18 and won by 8 goals with close to their best 22 on the fi eld, then promptly got overrun in the 1st semi a week later. A diff erent tactic has been employed this time, but if match committee name 11 ins this week then that is a big change. Passador is crucial in this. He has been the form forward of the competition in the past two months and his guile in front of goal will be critical kicking into or with the bayside breeze that will no doubt be at Sandy. Strange and Seed are also important as are Hill and Routman for there pace and prodigious kicking.
Collegians on the other hand are no slouches either. Their form in the last third of the season has been as good as anyone’s. Taft is on fi re, as are Tardiff and Zimbachs with their marauding run off half back. Jorgensen is now well supported by Penberthy and they can expose the hole that Shane Neaves injury leaves in the Cardinals ruck stocks. What counts against Collegians is their failure to beat – with the exception of Old Scotch last week – any of the sides above them. Nevertheless they can only beat what is in front of them and the fact it’s the same opposition they beat by 13 goals last week must give them confi dence.
