back one and all to another season of Amateur

ball .

isc football is back. Eight months must constitute the,es,_ off season of all time and has it been a busyai with legal proceedings consuming much time an d

ost- Olympic sponsorship hangovers making the

ir;ug of sponsorship dollars difficult, the extensiveou our website development and many other issueswe made the term "off- season" an incongruous

i.se, son promises to be as big, busy and bright as ever .cciding not to commence after Easter, this has meantalmost every weekend will either see home and away

chcs played or representative matches . We have beenznate enough to secure matches in Melbourne thison against the West Australian Amateur League (to

6ainst the VAFA C-D4 representative team in)ourne on April 3), against the South Australian„ ir League (to play against .the VAFA senior team in

bar of a body which represents football in this statemost importantly is the only body that will be

ne on April 10) and the senior team again playsVictorian Country, again in Melbourne (on July 22).

June 3 and July 22 matches will see players selecteding a round of club football and we are appreciative of:Iubs who have supported this.

e time of writing we are hopeful of securing Colonialjum for the playing of at least one of these senior:hes.

hter umpire uniforms.i the support of Sportscover Insurance and SchweppesField and boundary umpires this year will be seen in adesign of uniform with a splash of color added . Eachu npire will wear a number which will be consistentIns/her name which will appear in one of four lists~veek in the "Amateur Footballer" on the page besides

'Umpires' Corner` column.

'A signs Agreement with Football Victoriaof the most contentious issues has been whether we-ly sign an agreement or retain our absoluteadence. After months and months of deliberation ,

C'FA a fortnight ago signed an Agreement which inedoes not hinder our independence yet makes us a

d .

recognised by the AFL .What does this me an ?Simply the benefits arem any. We will be part ofa "big picture" that willdevelop football at alllevels in Victoria ; we will

PHIL STEVENSCHIEF EXECUTIVE

OFFICERreceive transfer fees as players are drafted or existing ex-VAFA players reach AFL milestones as well as otherfinancial support for other projects that can be presentedand justified . For example, Football Victoria assistedfinancially with the construction of the new fence atElsternwick Park even before we were formally a party tothe Agreement.

We are awaiting the VMFL (Metropolitan League) and theVCFL (Country) to sign and then we eagerly await FootballVictoria (with us), addressing issues such as providingcompensation for clubs that may be disadvantaged by thedecision of the AFL to broadcast live against the gate(2002) ; negotiating financial relief for clubs, leagues andassociations who find it difficult to pay spiralling groundrental charges as well as providing realistic insurancecosts and better legal protection for all volunteerparticipants.

We wish Football Victoria's chairman Neil Busse, CEO KenGannon and the board well in their endeavors .

Did you know that for this year. . . . . . . . . . . . . ?

Cards have been introduced into Amateur football for useby the umpires?

Each ground must be marked with 45 metre arcs andthere is a rule pertaining to these arcs?

A new rule has been brought in which should enhanceruck play?

Please refer to the "Umpires' Corner" column for fulldetails .

Good luck.On behalf of the new VAFA president Richard Evans, newExecutive chairman Bruce McTaggart, the ExecutiveCommittee and the VAFA Administration, I have greatpleasure in wishing you all well for the season ahead .

Welcome to another exciting season of A-section amateur football . The professional

leagues have been back on the field forseveral weeks now so amateur footy followersshould be champing at the bit at the prospectof today's round one clashes . Hope always

springs eternal at this time of the season.

There's been a certain amount of familiarityto the opening round report of A-sectionfootball for as many years as anyone cares toremember (six actually) . The central theme, of

course, has revolved around just how good

those Old Xaverians were last year, and towhat extent they're going to be half a yardquicker, half a foot taller and half a gamestronger in the year to come.

It's not a question I will attempt to tackle, butrather, here is what Old Xaverians triple-premiership winning coach, TimO'Shaugnessy, had to say about his charges'

prospect of notching up flag no. 7 and

thereby totally eclipsing once and for allUniversity Blacks' record six consecutivepremierships .

"We're pretty excited about it all . The goal ofwinning 7 is something really exciting aroundthe club, probably even more so than the last

few years . Getting that record, achieving thatgoal has really got the club going. We've got

something to strive for, because if we win itthis year we'll become the greatest club, rather than just equalling the record . That

opportunity will never come along again . "

It's worth noting that just five players fromlast year's premiership team will be missingfrom the 2001 model Xavs, and only about 6or 7 players from the full squad, and giventhe club's strength across all three grades, the reigning premiers will undoubtedly field aterribly strong line-up again .

Worth noting too, the names Dillon,

Richardson, Bowen and Blood . The quartet

have played in each of the Xavs sixpremiership-winning sides, a remarkable fea t

A TIJason Fren el

WOMMMMM7

and a source or

envy forfootballer s

throughout the

country. Xavs' opponents today, Old Scotc;i,

know too well the awesome strength of theiropposition, having lost the odd grand final tothe mighty red and black over the past few

years. Brendon Mason has been quick toearn the respect of his club in his brief timeat the Cardinals but Mason is not the type tobe patting himself on the back over last year's10-8 record (due to work commitmentsBrendan has stepped aside an d Andrew

Smith be Senior Coach for 2001 - Brendanwill remain in a coaching capacity at the

club) . Most believe Scotch have the talent tolaunch an assault on September action sodon't expect the Cardinals or their coach tosettle for anything less than a finals berth .

The most appetising clash from today's

matches pits St Kevins against University

Blues - last year's third and fourth-placedteams - in a replay of the 2000 first semi

final . The Blues conceded the lowest numberof points against last year and Lee

Adamson's water-tight backline was a bigfactor in the club's success and ultimateappearance in September action . Their

opponents today, St Kevins, fell just fourpoints short of a grand final appearance lastyear, knocked out by the eventual premiers inthe preliminary final in what was clearly theSKOBS best account of themselves under thetutelage of their successful and hyphenated

coach, Mike McArthur-Allen . A talent-laden

side with good players across most lines, nodoubt SKOBS will be looking to go one better

in 2001 .

Old Brighton return to A-section footballdetermined to secure a permanent spot in theamateurs' premier division having straddledthe B-section and A-section competitionsover the past few years . Few could question

Dale Tapping's success at the club but theexperienced coach will still be feeling cheated

Page 5: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2001

of a premiership given that Old Brighton wereclearly the best-performed side of B-section

throughout 2001 . Brighton may have wontwo games more than Mazenod during thehome-and-away fixture last year but they lostthe big one - the one that counts - and thatshould leave the club with a bitter taste thatneeds to be erased from their mouths in

2001. old Trinity could well be feeling a

similar sense of a goal not quite achieved

given that Leigh C arlson and co. finished

just one win short of a finals berth . Carlson is

:~ astute coach with a talented team ; teams

,_,, , treat Trinity with anything less thanl,-,pect do so at their peril .

i-iazenod open their 2001 season accounth a B-section flag under their belts and the

N,:e ;yhty expectations of a supporter basein to see the Nodders build on a strongfoundation and keep their place in A-section .

Expect a strong showing from David Murray

and his charges today, but the Mazenodcoach must have drawn a big breath when heran his finger down the fixture to find theclub's season-opening clash would be againstSt Bernasds . The 2001 A-section runners-upcaused headaches for every team in thecompetition last year and I don't fancy thistough side to be in any mood other than a

savage one today given the ultimatelydisappointing end to last season. Having

beaten the all-conquering Xavs in September(August) last year in the second-semi final,Gary Foulds will be heartened to know thathis team can beat the best, but that won'tease the pain of the sneaking suspicion thatmaybe last year was one that got away .

The final clash of today's opening round seesMarcellin host MHSOB at the College groundin Bulleen . Two teams with plenty to prove, neither the Eagles nor the Students couldtruthfully claim to be happy with their effortsin 2000, with both teams returning 6-12records that hardly kept them free of therelegation zone . Luke Soulos has taken overthe reigns down at Melbourne High and willhave the difficult task of harnessing theUnicorns' undeniable but erratic potential, while Simon Dalrymple has the unenviabletask of transforming Marcellin from a meekteam of also-rans into a powerful, finals-

threatening club .

Good luck to all players, coaches and clubsfor a successful and injury-free year. Andgood luck to all supporters for season 2001 -here's hoping your team wins on the day.

Greetings and salutations to everyone for the2001 footy year. You have the pleasure (orpain) of seeing my ugly mug again this year . Itseems like an eternity since premiershipcelebrations were going on . Good luck to alland sundry this year.

I've rounded up my coat pullers in an attemptto find out what's happening around thetraps with each club. Here's what the drumis . . . .

Old Ivanhoe - g .~ "rT and PaulFahey give 01 a Parade fl, our, as they takeover one of the relegants from A grade in2000 . Sources tell me that a few high profilenames have departed. Whilst the practicematch form was nothing to write home about,it was only 2 years ago 01 were A gradefinalists . Expect them to be in and around thefinal four .

Old Melburnians - New coach Erwin Leydenhas been faced with the reality of a number ofsenior players leaving with the drop down toB grade . There's also that other distractionwhich will surely not be helping their cause. If the club can maintain their focus on thefooty, they will be more than competitive, although history shows that very few teamsare promoted straight after being relegated.

De SaIts been business as usual atMalvern, where Paul Cooper has been busyon the beat in an attempt to return to Agrade. This has included a very tough pre-season, where the emphasis has been onfitness . De La are looking to build on lastyear's first semi final appearance, go twobetter and earn promotion in 2002 .

Old Paradians - There has been a masschange in personnel at Bundoora. Arevamped committee and coaching staff hasbeen the result of a clean out . Star playershave been jumping out of the trees, givingnew coach Matt Ryan plenty to get excitedabout . The torturous pre-season began whenBrew charged home with the Cup, and themomentum continues to build at the home ofBr Garvey. My mail is that Ryan is an

e x c e l l e n tstrategist, andwith largenumbers attraining, a top two finish is almost a certainty!

North Old Boys - The dogs are barking in .Brunswick!! I% - ' : - s.aaell has kept most oflast year's list, and with the addition of somebig name recruits, the rumour is that NOBswill 'do an Essendon' this year . That is, they'llgo through undefeated and clean up in thefinals . Unbeatable is the word I keep hearing, and whilst a lot can happen, a premiership isa mere formality according to those in theknow. And no, Frank, I'm NOT making it up! !

Whitefriars - Under new coach GregFeutrill, Whitefriars will be looking toconsolidate again in B grade and maybe eveneye off a spot in the four. That may be a toughtask, however, as apparently a few playershave left the Donvale club, and, as has beenwith a lot of clubs around Melbourne, highquality replacements have been hard to find .However, with the backing of a strong schooland quality juniors, this still may be possible .

Old Haileybury - It's been a tough pre-season for Mick Dwyer this year. A numberof higher proffle players won't be pulling onthe boots this year. Combine that with adisappointing year from the U 19s, it may atough year down at McKinnon. Strangerthings have happened, though, and lastyear's enigmas could surprise everyone .

Therry - The chaps from Oak Park have onething on their mind . A grade. The committeehas been going gangbusters in the off season, and the signing of Wayne Harmes istestament to their persistence . Make nomistake, this mob are quite capable of comingup from C grade and finishing top four .

Beaumaris - The bongo drums have beenbanging loudly down at B grade's residentbeachside suburb . Only half a dozen or soplayers are left from last year's GF side.Whilst this may spell doom and gloom innormal circumstances for Jim Durnan, their

Page 9: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2001

U19s were Section 2 premiers last year, sothey have a winning culture, and maysurprise a few pundits this year .

orvaond _After a blazing start to the year in2000, the residents of E . E . Gunn fell away

towards the business end. New coach Ian

Jj_,ckn2an has been busy in the off season, attempting to move upwards towards finals

and promotion. The pre-season form hasbeen steady and combine that with the homeground advantage in Mr . Gunn's backyard, itindicates they'll be around the mark again .

Naturally, it would be remiss of me not to

i 1 ~ ive done some homework myself. So I spoketo our bookie friends at Vanuatu and Darwin, and theyve come up the markets for the year.

Such was the unanimous thought that NOBswould be a stand out, I requested a quote foran undefeated season . I was told 3/ 1 was thebest on offer, and rd needed to be MauriceGreene to get it !

Most of us would have at some time played"Pin the tail on the Donkey' . Well, as you canall appreciate Fm still playing it as I attemptto find the winners of the season opener. Stillcan't get the right end of the donkey. . . . •

Old Haileybury (2 / 1) play host to De La Salle

(4/11) at McKinnon . The big ground will suitthe DLS running game and the away side willbe too good by 35 pts.

The 2000 C grade GF replay is betweenI3eaumaris (7/4) and Therry (4/9) down bythe beach, where orange juice will be sold bythe truck load. I think that the result will stillbe the same as that game, and Harmes andhis boys from Oak Park will go home with thetrolley full when they win by 28 pts .

Old Ivanhoe (1/5) and Whitefriars (7/2)

meet at Chelsworth Park. The home groundadvantage is too hard to ignore, and I thinkthat the home side will give Sholly a good kickstart to the year when 01 'land the bickies' by

45 pts .

NOBs (1/3) and Old Melburnians (15/8)should be an interesting clash at Brunswick(that's Melways #29E6, for those OMs whowish to go to Wangaratta!!) . On paper, thisseems like this should be a close contest .

However, the raging flag favourites will live upto the huge boom on them and win like goodthings should, when Leyden and his men aresent packing. NOBs by 32 pts .

Ormond (11 / 4) make the trek out to visit BrGarvey and face the resurgent and super fitOld Paradians (1/4) . The away side has avery good record against the OPs, however, today is square up time for the green andpurples, and Tll go out on a limb here, and tipa massacre . OPs by 66 pts .

Where does one start?? Tll lead with my chinon a few here .De La Salle (1 / 7) vs Old Haileybury(11 / 2)De La to win by 30 pts .

Beaumaris (6/ 1) vs Therry (1 /8)Therry to win 39 pts .

Old Ivanhoe (1/2) vs Whitefriars (6/4)Old Ivanhoe to win by 20 pts.

NOBs (1 / 1) vs Old Melburnians (4/6)Old Melburnians to win by 5 pts .

Well here we go again . After an 8 monthsabbatical Footy is on the road again . Itcertainly has been a long break all batteriesrecharged and all enthusiasm should be tothe forefront as we kick off another Ammoseason today .

Things in C-Section will be a little bit differentthis season as having over the summersevered my ties with Beaumaris, I haveabsolutely no club involvement at all, andtherefore no bias whatsover in what I writeduring the season . Hopefully this will allowyou the clubs to be a bit more forthcoming ininformation provided to me and thus makingthis a well read and appreciated column.

At this stage I plan to see at least 2 matches

each weekend so that I will know what I am

writing about, if you have any queries likes or

dislikes about what and how I write the

column please feel free to approach and

discuss it with me . Of course if you so wish I

am open and available for any Luncheon

invitations etc . etc .

Good Luck to all Coaches, Players andAdministrators associated with all clubs, maywe play the game in true Amateur spirit forthe enjoyment of sport and may the bestteams win.

SUMMER FOIBLES.

AJAX. The Jackas have enjoyed a pretty goodseason and believe they are certainly fitterthan this time last season, and are veryimpressed with the way new Coach MarkSarau has the boys firing . The loss of GabDukes (Overseas) and Andrew Kalinski(retired at this stage) will hurt but they haveimproved their depth with the return of a fewplayers from 99 . Practice match form isencouraging with impressive performancesagainst higher grade clubs in Beaumaris andOld Brighton .

BYTLLEEId-'I'E LESTD ; Dean Matthewsin charge . A good move . Have not heard muchabout them, but an improved showing wouldnot surprise at all . Their ladder position last

year did not dojustice to theirendeavour . Earlyseason form willbe the guide to their chances .

CAULFIELD GRAMMAR . Back in the Sectionafter a few years in the wilderness . Impressedin their practice matches have worked hardwith the school to use it as a recruitingground, have some good players comingthrough from the Under 19's and will becertainly thereabouts . You have to respectany side coached by Dean Anderson .

COLLEGIANS. Good to see the club give TimHart another year at the helm . They are in arebuilding phase and showing faith in theCoach is a good start . Conflicting storiesabout practice match form but a good victoryover Mentonians should give them plenty ofconfidence going into Round 1 .

GLEN EIRA. Not a happy preseason for the

Sainters with no ground to train on, and no

certainty of when they will get it back . The

loss of Hasell to Black Rock has hurt too

with a couple going with him. Any side

coached by Paul Beddoe wiil certainly be

competitive but with the disruptions one

thinks they may struggle .

HAMPTON ROVERS. Certainly haverecruited the coaching panel of the sectionwith the Goss Brothers and David "Sammy"Holt all having input . Have not lost too many, the return from OM'S of Anthony Brownewill be a boost as will the signing of Brudarfrom Haileybury. I'm tipping they will bethereabouts again, will be very young but theexperience of Anderson, Artz, Fletcher, andScarlett helps them . Finals a certainty .

PRAHRAN. Excellent practice match formwith a i point loss their worst showing . Werecertainly the form side of the comp at the endof last season, and if they can keep themomentum going will be a dangerouscommodity . Have lost a few but gained a fewand Tony Free will be a lot wiser in his

p LO the standard .

OLD r~TrNTOHIANS• Will certainly be out tothemselves after a pretty dismal

,n Sven Sauailcl is at the helm again, and1,1urn of a couple of Legends in Adam

;; c_, iuau, and Drew Solley wiil certainly helpa-ise, and the young kids blooded in B

i1,i year will be certainly better for the

"Nprience. Chooka is quietly confident

bout the chances .

ST BELyES-IiRE2d°l'ONE TIGERS . RusselBarnes takes the helm at a club that haspromised plenty and delivered little in the last

3 years . The loss of Tony Macgeorge(coaching Mentone AFC) will hurt, believe acouple have gone with him too, and SamHecker is another loss . Timmy Beazley ispulling them on again and that with thecoaching skills of Barnesy still gives themstrong claims.

I'm not going to stick my neck out and pickthe Final 4 but it will come from the following5 in no set order; Hampton Rovers, Ajax,Prahran, Old Mentonians, CaulfieldGrammar. Let's see how close I get .

PREVIEW

Hardest week of the year to tip with anyconfidence and some interesting games toobut here goes ;

Glen Eira travel to Harry Trott and with aninterrupted pre season under their belt I feelthey may be a bit under done so am tippingthe Purple and Golds to start their season ona winning note but warn them to notunderestimate the Sainters .

Old Essendon welcome Ajax to the newly

named Teac Park, and this promises to be an

evenly fought contest . The OE'S are strong at

home while away from Albert Park the Jackas

can be a bit erratic, so I don't really know .

Based on last year's form AJAX are the best

side left in the section so I'm tipping them to

win .

B een play host to the Tigers in whatpromises to be another hard fought contestwhere no quarter will be given by either side .Hard to gauge the strengths of either side asyet so I am going to take the easy way out andgo with the home side. The combine to winbut only just.

Old Mentonians welcome back old rivals

Hampton Rovers to the picturesque playing

fields at Keysborough. Again it promises an

enthralling encounter. Both have a good

blend of youth and experience on their side,

which promises plenty it all boils down to

who is on their game more. Again early

season home ground advantage means heaps

in the early part of the season so perhaps

against my better judgement I'm going for the

Tonners .

Match of the round this one the newlypromoted Caulfield Grammar unfurling theirhard earned flag welcome the all conqueringTwo Blues . Tough test for the newlypromoted boys from the Grammar and theirform will certainly let us know just exactlywhere they are at and what their seasonpromises . I'm going to contradict myself hereand go against the norm and tip the visitorsbecause of their experience, but a reversalwould not surprise .

CYAN PRESS

Farewell and best wishes in C Section toCaulfield Grammarians and OldEssendon, who gave us some great finalsaction last year . Welcome to Uni.Blacks &

Yarra Valley promoved from D2, and toIvanhoe Assumption & Old Geelongarriving from C .

The Dl competition again looks as tight asthe proverbial piscatorial alimentarysphincter, so scoring the 11 or 12 wins towin a finals berth will not be easy. I wishsuccess to all the Clubs, in what promisesto be a splendid footy season .

St Leos Emmaus v Aquinas

Both the Two Blues and the Bloods havelost a few, gained a few from last year, butexpect an overall performanceimprovement through the maturation oftheir younger players . With each Clubstriving to improve their 'away' gameproductivity, today will be an acid test forAquinas . David Miller & Laurie Aghancontinue at their respective helms, andthis game will provide some clues as to theprospects for the rest of the Section . Iexpect the Two Blues to win a good gameby a couple of goals, mainly because of theBennettswood factor .

Monash Blues v Old Geelong

Headers tells me that a few weeks back, the Blues, with no McGee, Furnell,Caldwell, or Morrison, were definitelydrowning dahlias. Since looking at thefresh intake of students though, the Blueshave moved away from the mournfulpurple end of the spectrum, and now viewtheir prospects in a much rosier light .Simon Perry of OGGs on the other hand, wanted time for reflection beforecommitting himself, but whatever he sawin that mirror, he elected not to share withus, so methinks he must have somethingup his sleeve, the canny chap . Doc

Rogers remains as chief agitator at the

D1 SECTIONby Barry Hickey

Blues, whileOGGs have a newcoach in JonEdgar. I'll haveto go for the home side by 3 goals or so .

Banyule v Yarra Valley

Greg 31Thitcroft has had the Bearsbeavering away since last November, sothat, while they will be substantially thesame as last year personnel-wise, he isbanking on their early season fitness to getthem into 2001 finals action . Tim

Killworth will have a typical Yarra Valleyteam on the field again, with plenty ofpace, skill, and youthful enthusiasm .Today's encounter will favour

the Bears who play Warringal so well, andtheir edge in preparation should give thema 4 or 5 goal margin .

Ivanhoe Assumption v Old Camberwe ll

Both clubs have new coaches this season :Brad Hall, comes via Assumption College,Melbourne and elsewhere, for the homeside : while Jarrod O'Neill will be using hisBox Hill background to lift the Wells . I-Awill be relying on home grown talent toproduce the goods, which is a similar storyto that of the Wells, who have retained lastyear's list, with a couple of useful formerplayers returning. The Wells were a goodoutfit in 2000, whose performancemystified both myself, and their ownconnexions . As a Club they are in thewonderful position of being able to field anU17 team as well as an U 19s this year, which speaks heaps for their longtermfuture. The Wells' pre-season form hasbeen very good and on the strength of thatI'll tip them to take the points by 2 or 3goals .

University Blacks v Old Carey

Blacks have, naturally, retainedpremiership coach, Kane Bowden, and are

Page 19: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2001

looking forward to a big lift in performance~,rith the addition of experienced footballers

such as matt Armstrong from Frankston,

ix:. Dave Wilkinson from NOBs . In addition

big things are expected from rover, RonCunningham, Tom Chatfield in the ruck,

plus Nat Roberts and young former Old

Carey legend, Andrew Costello. Thepanther's have suffered the customarydepredation of their junior ranks by Asection pirates, but under new coach,Chris Hickey, with returning players in

Chad Esler, Andrew Jackson, Ash Ross,

Danny Walsh, & Chris Battle, added tooutstanding youngsters such as Richard

pppy, Andrew Kent, Damien Shutie,

Travis Bull , & Peter Unkles, look a much

more settled unit than they were in aninjury riddled 2000 . By all reports, Blacksare a little further ahead in theirpreparation than Old Carey, and could bea few points ahead at the siren after aterrific game .

Reserves winners should be: St Leo's,Monash Blues, Banyule, IvanhoeAssumption, & Old Carey.

5 YEARS AGO - 1996

Old Haileybury, 1995 'B' section Premiers, returned to 'A 'section under astute coach Neville Taylor, keen tovaporise the memories of their last dismal appearance inA' section. They will be joined by 'B' section runners up1995, Mazenod who joined the VAFA in 1989 and havealways looked as if they were headed for 'A' section . .

'A' section premiers Old Xaverians opened their 1996season under new coach Simon Meehan against OldMelburnians under their new coach Sean Ralphsmith. The first quarter was close, but from then on O .Ms werealways dominant, winning 15.13 (103) to 11 .10 (76) . Bestplayers were A . Thompson, Hewitt, Eabry, Susa (OM) andBlood, Richardson, McClelland, Mollard.

'A' section scribe Don Blackwood was prompted to say, would the Old Xaverians turn out to be a one premiershipwonder like the OMs proved to be after their 1994 W.St Kevin's O .B ., celebrated their 50th year in the VAFAwith a 40 point win against Old Mentonians who hadcome down from 'B' . Coach Tim Hart was pleased withthe team's all round strength. It was not much of a dayfor Old Mentonians 1995 B+F winner Tony Bournan toremember his big day, 150 games . Tony as always gaveall and was among his team's best .

Ivanhoe hosted a pre-match luncheon to honor theremarkable service of Harry Thomas, a stalwart of theclub for 51 years - player, committeeman, and Presidentin the 1969 premiership year.

Closest match for the round was in 'B' section where OldBrighton were held scoreless in the final term by NorthOld Boys whose inaccuracy 3 .5 lost then the game by twopoints, 8 .11 (89) to 7.15 (57). Best were Pryor, Lennox,Rickarby (Old B'ton) and Collison, Curran, Abrahams(NOB) .

Old Geelong and the VAFA mourned the passing ofNugget Stephens, a life member of the club and a lifemember of the VAFA . From 1955, Nuggett served OldGeelong in every position, from unsung and mundanejobs through to President . He was always there - apopular friend, advisor, assistant and helper - and alwaysa wonderful diplomat for his club and the VAFA everconscious of the need to maintain standards, and of theneed to try your utmost but always to remember its agame. He was a wonderful worker on Interstate trips -any job was well done with a minimum of fuss .10 YEARS AGO - 1991

New teams welcomed were Boronia Park, St PatsMentone, Albanvale, Chirnside Park, St Johns OC,

Monash Gryphons .

Five times 'A' sectionpremiership coach withOrmond, Mike McArthur-Allen, joined the Administrationas Executive Officer.

Peter Sherwin, well respected Old Scotch star andrepresentative player on many occasions had beenappointed coach of his old club .

Former Collingwood and Fitzroy winger Leigh Carlsonhad joined Collegians as coach replacing long time coachBruce Ferguson who had taken over at Parkside whileOrmond had appointed former premiership playerMichael McCarthy.

An elite section had been introduced in the Under-19section, with the balance of the teams divided into northand south sections.

University Blues noted with regret the death in Januaryof long serving time keeper Graeme Coleman who joinedBlues from Caulfield Grammarians and to end of season1990 had time kept about 800 games .

VAFAUA office bearers were Andrew Belcher, PresidentPeter Keogh, Secretary: Stephen Hopper, Treasurer:Richard Simon, Social Secretary: VAFA Member KevinSegota.

AJAX won the Vic Health pre-season Under 19 LighteningPremiership .

The Executive had decided to honour the memory of lateGeorge McTaggart, widely known as father of VAFA Under19 football and the magazine 'the Amateur Footballer", byleather binding a collection of all "Amateur Footballer"magazines and calling them 'The George McTaggartCollection", and displaying them in a prominent positionin the Boardroom .15 YEARS AGO - 1986

President John Dillon welcomed five new clubs, StAndrews, St Leonards OC and Whitefriars to F section, and also to Eltham and GTV-9 to compete in G section .

Mark Hannebery had returned to coach North Old Boys.

'A' section scribe Ross Booth picked Collegians newplayer Rick Schober to have a big season.

Young Ormond star Simon Eishold had won a place onMelbourne's list.

A' section umpires to open the season were Ron Lippold,

Peter Wiseman, Shane Urwin, Steve McCarthy, ColinKing, Ken Coughlin, Brian Goodman, John Horwood,Brian Hayward, Dick Tracey.

Executive, committee were continuing to explore a ll

possibilities of a permanent headquarters .

There had been so much trouble at 1980 finals serieswith owners bringing their dogs along for a run (includingGreg Fisher of Ormond with his Alsation) that theTreasurer suggested to the Executive that owners becharged $1 .00 to bring their dogs into Elsternwick Park.Still , it's family football, and what's a family without aGreat Dane, or a St Bernard, or a Doberman Pincer toplay with the children!

'there was a sensati on to start the season when on theFriday night prior to the first game, an investiga tionwhich had taken place over several weeks, culminated inU . Blues being relegated from 'A' section to 'B' section forseason 1981, due to an irregularity in circumstancesconcerning a permit application for a prominent U. Bluesplayer. AJAX was promoted to 'A' section.

25 YEARS AGO - 1976

Alf Keam, a man of many talents was the AmateurFootba ller's 'A' section tipster for 1976, a new feature withother confident characters . 'B' John Byrne, 'C' AlexJohnson, 'D' Jim Fidge, 'E' Syd Whitfield, 'F KeithF"mdlay. Junior 1 Norm Nugent, and yes, they couldn'tkeep him out, Junior 2, the one an d only Peter Nathan.Alf Picked Old Trinity to beat U. Blues, 1975 premiercoach Gus Mitchell's St Bernard's to do PeterO'Donoghue's (State Coach) U . Blacks, NOB "alwaystrained to the minute" against Monash Blues, Coburgand Reservoir Old Boys "a thriller" - lean to NOB's andOrmond, eager for a first up win for new coach IanCameron to defeat De La Safe "minus Peter Murnane".You might say "Alfie needed the run" - for the record,

Blues annihilated OT. Gus did the right thing with a 31point win, NOB (L. Murray 6 gls) too good for Blues (bestplayer R. Booth), Coburg 110 points over NOB and poor'Cammie', De La swamped Ormond by 45 points, Onlytwo out of five, Alf.

A "sour note" to start the season - a record of 14 playersreported for an opening round.

30 YEARS AGO - 197 1

Lou Zachariah, a devoted Amatuer Footballer man formany years, and a particular enthusiast for interstateand AAFC games succeeded Ernest F . Atkins asPresident, who together with two former secretaries, JackMcCann and Geoff Moore, was appointed "Patron" of theAssociation.

Marcellin and North Brunswick joined the Association(Peter French, VAFA General Manager for 1983 to 1989,played on the wing in Marcellin's first game and kickedone goal - NR) .

Well known names among new coaches were Roger Head(Old Halleyburians), Kevin McLean (Old Ivanhoe), PaddyWalsh (St Kevin's) and John Bennetti (Ivanhoe).

1970 'A' premiers, Caulfield Grammarians, trailedCollegians by 2 goals at 3/4 time but put on 9.7 to 0.4 towin easily. Best for the victors were Atchison (5), Clarkand Lester and Crow, Opie, Roach (5) for Collegians.

After settling a club record by winning three successivebest and fairest awards Mick Quinlan deserved thehonour of appointment as captain of Old Paradians .

35 YEARS AGO - 1966

For the second time in four years the Association hasbeen forced to vacate its central ground, the latest blowbeing the loss of the St Kilda Cricket Ground . TheAssociation had used Olympic Park for five years after the1956 Olympic Games but the introduction of a dog racingtrack decreased the size of the ground and it became toosmall for Australian Rules .

The following clubs did not reappear in 1966 : RAAF,Postal Institute, BellHeld, Cassle (this was a club of aGreek brotherhood and whose equivalent in SouthAustralia were Al Premiers in the SAAFL in 1985),Monash Whites and Kooyong .40 YEARS AGO - 196 1

Ian Cleland (in the 70's and 80's and 90's an "authority"on ABC on lawn bowls, trotting and football and anything else he knows a bit about) was appointed VAFAumpires advisor. Rumour has it that Ian got re-appointedeach year because he sang so well at the Association'sAnnual Dinner - those smashing top 40's numbers, "AMan Called Peter", and "The Place Where I Worship". Heusually told a couple ofjokes of unusual quality before hesang.

Other notable events were that Mr Geoff Moore ofCollegians AFC was awarded Life Membership, and OldGeelong Grammarians, despite after finishing last in 'B'section, turned to former coach and "star" Noel Rundle torevitalise them in 'C' section as well as be club president!(A "star" hey Noel - BC) .

CLUB 111 SECTIONby Norm Nugent

The sixteenth season of Club XVIII footballin its present form commences today witheach of the twenty sides confident they will besuccessful .

Again this season there are several changesto the competing clubs . Unlike the 2000

situation there are no scheduled byes as

twenty clubs are fielding teams in the twosections.

SECTION 1 .Therry Penola replace Marcellin andBrunswick have moved from D4 so that thebye has been eliminated .Old Scotch are always competitive and withthe experience gained last season by manyyoung players they will again prove worthyopposition . Their visitors, St Kevins, playedwell at times last season, although theylacked the consistency of the top four sides .At Camberwell lean towards Old Scotch toopen with a win .Newcomers Brunswick are drawn to playMazenod at Fleming Park . Brunswick are along standing VAFA member, who first joinedin 1925 . Included in their membership hasbeen participation in 'A' section. How willthey fare in 2001 remains to be seen .Mazenod, who did not enjoy much successlast season, have been training well and areconfident of a lot more success . I suspecttoday that their greater fitness will lead toMa2enod's first win in 2001 .Two of last year's finalists, Prahran and OldXaverians meet at Gardiner Park. For manyseasons, each Old Xaverian team has beenthe measuring stick of its section. Willanything change in 2001? Overall matchpreparation and fitness will enable OldXaverians to defeat Prahran today.Last year's preliminary finalists De La Salleand Old Melburnians meet at Darling Park.A new look De La Salle led by MarkWilliamson will be confident of victory as OldMelburnians off field happenings may havedistracted the players . At home I select De LaSalle to win narrowly .Last season's runners up in season 2 TherryPenola will be at home to Old Brighton, whodisappointed in 2000, despite their club

enjoying asuccessful season .It has always bee ndifficult for visitorsto achieve success at Oak Park and today Iforecast victory to Therry Penola.SECTION 2

Of the twelve sides who played in this sectionin 2000 only six remain . They are joined byfour newcomers, two of whom will be makingtheir Club XVIII debut.Old Essendon Grammarians journey toBulleen to play Marcellin . Old Essendonplayed half a season in the section In 1996and if I remember correctly, Marcellin weretheir last opposition. With the benefit ofhome ground advantage and an A sectionpreparation by some of their players I predictvictory to Marcellin .Old Trinity play-Monash Blues at Bulleen .As University sides are often slow to start, Isuspect that last year's finalist may be shortof match practice and so I favour Old Trinityto open with a win. From reports, Whitefriars may be short ofplayers and if this March rumour is correct, last season's third placed side, Old Ivanhoeshould score a comfortable first victory. The two new sides, University Blacks and StLeos meet on the Brens Oval, which will benew territory to both. Even though Universitysides traditionally begin slowly, there wouldappear little between the virtual thirdeighteens of two D1 clubs . I therefore selectUniversity Blacks who are the more familiarwith Royal Park conditions .News has filtered through that Collegianscould be short of players . If this is true whatabout Old Geelong, who only won twice in2000?? This game could be a close contest ofthe wide expanses of Como Park . With nogreat confidence I select Collegians .

COACHES' CLIPBOARDV.A .F.A .

"Your Coaches' Association"

ROLE OF THE (;®At;® ® By Anne StephensLevel 2 Jumps and Multi-Evens Coach,

Australian Track and Field Coaches Associatio n

1~9ng goes that 'every coach will coach manyl leics in their career, but each of those athletes

only one career' . This, it is thought ,cnrnhasises to coaches the responsibility theyhave to their athletes . But I believe this quote doesnot go far enough . We must develop anunderstanding of coaching on a deeper, morephilosophical level .

Every athlete who comes to us brings with them adream - for some it is to be state champion, forothers it is to be world champion . Each of thesedreams are precious. When we accept an athlete'sdream as a realistic goal, then we are placingourselves in a position of trust - we become the'keeper of faith' . Between the athlete and thecoach there now becomes a 'bond of belief . Theathletes believe you have the ability to take themto the level they wish to achieve, and the coachbelieves in the athlete's ability to achieve that level .

Thus is born the coach/athlete relationship - adelicate balance of trust, faith and belief in eachother.

FACILITATOR OF LEARNING

I hesitate to use the word teacher because I fuidthe term restrictive and not conducive to the levelof joint communication required between anathlete and a coach . The coach has technicalknowledge and a picture/model of what they wantthe athlete to achieve . The athlete must develop a'feeling or kinaesthetic awareness of what themovement patterns feel like, to be able toconsistently reproduce the desired patterns.

Good coach/athlete communication must beinteractive . The athlete must be encouraged totalk to the coach about how a movement feels togive the coach the 'whole picture' . Conversely forthe athlete to have the 'whole picture' they mustunderstand the picture/model and the technicalrequirements the coach feels appropriate for them .

So the desired outcome of coach/athletecommunication, over a period of time, must bethat the athlete and coach have the same 'wholepicture' of1 . where they are going (the goal)

AFCA/VAFAA.RC .A

2 . how to get there (the plan )3 . what it feels like (the performance)

This provides a solid performance base for theathlete . They will go into competition knowingthey are physically well prepared, they will haveconfidence in their technique, and they will knowthat in the stands is someone who believes inthem, as they believe in themselves .

NETWORK SUPPORT

There are thousands of roles a coach can play -some of these roles you will take on, some you arenot qualified for and will need help with . As the'keeper of faith' it is important that you selectcarefully as those you trust to help you and yourathlete realise their dream .

I cannot stress how important it is that the healersand others experts that you choose to help yourathletes are 'like minded' people, who understandthe needs of the athletes and are 'like minded'people, who understand the needs of the athleteand are prepared to 'go the extra mile' for them .

Please do not underestimate the value of othercoaches . I often use the analogy that coachingathletes is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together .Sometimes you get stuck because you have beenstaring for too long . A fresh pair of eyes can oftensee what we are blinded to . Other coaches are notgoing to object to you asking their advice, most willindeed be flattered . It is always good to getanother viewpoint - it doesn't mean you have toagree with it, or even act upon it, but othercoaches can be a useful and stimulating coachingresource.

BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE

Coaching is the most challenging, most rewarding, most fulfilling job I have ever done . I amcontinually developing my communication skillsand my network of supporters. I also take everyopportunity to update and expand my knowledge .I owe that to myself and to my athletes . 'When youstop learning, you stop growing and you becomeless than you can be' .

D2 SECTIONby Elvion Bowen

Welcome one and all to what promises to beanother exciting season of D2 AmateurFootball! The extended lay-off over summe rhas provided clubs with possibly their longestpre-season ever, and hopefully a highstandard of football will ensue in this openinground . Best of luck to all players and clubs -if the 2001 season is as close as the previousone, then we are set for a beauty!

Mentone Amateurs has scored a major coupin the form of new playing coach TonyMacgeorge. Formally of St Bedes Mentoneand Sandringham, he should prove a handfulfor opposition teams either around thecentre, or up forward where his practicematch form has been ominous . A number ofplayers have followed him to Southern Road, with perhaps four likely to line-up this weekin the seniors. The Under 19's are alsolooking strong, which should assist theVulture's depth, and with no significantdepartures they will be eyeing a fmals berth .

Parkside was a little slow off the mark lastseason but finished in a flurry to be a genuinethreat come season's end . Laurie Zarafa wi llagain take the reins and will no doubt bekeen to ensure the Red Devils are a forceaway from Pitcher Park . They should haveenough class and balance to again becontender, however the trip to Mentone mayprove a tough one first up .

Round 1 will be a momentous occasion forPowerhouse when they unfurl their 2000premiership flag down by the Lake . They havesuffered a fairly high turnover of playersfollowing last year's success, the mostnotable of which include big Doc and a 100goal forward in Searle. Their ability to coversuch losses will largely determine their year, though doubtless they will be keen to utilisethe flag as a springboard to further success .The addition of Anthony Palmer (ex-NorthMelb) and Damien Murrihy (North Ballarat)to their ranks could well be the answer .

They lock horns with old rivals Peninsula, where Chris Gawne has ascended to the

senior coaching

position. He has

been joined byGreg Nelson andDarren Fenech to form what the Pirates hopewill be a winning formula . They will besearching for a greater level of consistencyfollowing a fairly hot and cold 2000 .Peninsula has secured some promisingyoungsters and will do their utmost to ruinthe Piranha's day.

Kew has enjoyed good numbers on the trackand has re-appointed Serge D' Angelo, withGreg Crimmins and Leigh Bradley his right-hand men. They've had solid hit-outs againstBanyule, Salesian and West Brunswick in thelead-up and have recruited from as far afieldas Warragul and Tasmania . After adisastrous start last season the K's ralliedhard to be extremely tough opposition byseason's end, and will be looking to take thatup another notch when they host WestBrunswick this week .

The Westies have appointed '98 reservespremiership coach Paul Cook to the top job,who faces the immediate challenge ofcovering a few departures from the Magpienest . These include Steve Benjamin (cricketo/s), Dave Edwards ( o/s) and DamienKoonan. Their practice match against Kewwas very competitive, and the result maydepend on the success of the West'srecruiting drive, which may take a little timeto bear fruit. The K's may just be gelling alittle more at this point .

La Trobe joins D2 section following adisappointing 2000, and are pitted againstOakleigh, who also rejoin us after suffering asimilar fate . Andrew Sutherland will againcall the shots with the knowledge that theTrober's have lost a few, including formercaptain and club stalwart Gerard Robinson, who has moved to Echuca for work .Fortunately, the University's colleges haveprovided both players and enthusiasm, andthe massive Main Oval out at Bundoora

Page 29: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2001

tiho.dld again be a daunting prospect for

opposition teams .

Qalcleigh will be hoping to bounce back aftersuch a tough season, but they are a proudclub that will no doubt be more thancompetitive this season following some

significant changes . New coach Russell

Brnerton is a former South Melbourne andpakleigh player with a wealth of coaching~,xperience, and an able assistant in formerSpringvale and Noble Park player Adam

Schultz . The Krushers have regained theT,ulk their '99 premiership side, and they'll be!wen to open their account early after therelative famine of last year. Other recruits tolook for include former De La player Mark

McHenry and 7ft giant Alex Mc Kenzie .

Salesian has enjoyed some solid practicematches in the pre-season, with opponentsincluding Kew and Peninsula . Their playingstocks appear to be largely unchanged, although last year's D2 best & fairest winnerwas noticeably absent . Big Andy may prove atough loss to cover should he be missing fromthe Chaddy line-up this year. They will relyheavily once again on the experience of

Bobetic, Sutherland and Canavan andshould have a cracker first up againstWilliamstown CYMS .

Willi has Darren 'Dumbo' Williams on theclipboard once again and he has been buoyedby 'better than ever' numbers according toPres . Peter Sadler. They have faced Ivanhoe,Old Westbourne and Coburg (EssendonDistrict) in the lead-up and are anxiouslywaiting on the signing of a few big recruits, including Leigh Monkhorst (brother of you-know-who), who has played previously withWoori Yaliock .

End ofSeason2000 saw

some of our fellow umpires retire. We would liketo thank them all for their dedication andcommitment to the Association and hope everypath they take in the future is fruitful . A SPECIAi,THANKYOU is owed to John Kelly (13 years / 273games), Craig O'Donohue (moved to W.A - 9 years/ 200 games), Graeme Thwaites (15 years / 310games) an d Michael Lentini (moved to Bendigo)for their magnificent contribution to theAssociation .RULES

Each ground must have two 45 metre arcs drawnon it for every match played. When a full back iskicking the ball back into play after a behind a freekick will be paid against a club if its runner or anyother on-field official is positioned within the 45metre area . This free is to be taken by a player ofthe opposition team from any point on the 45metre arc in that half of the ground . If the team isslow in choosing player and point where the kickis taken the umpire will quickly do both .

This is a disincentive for clubs to "add to thenumbers" . Umpires will obviously show discretionif a trainer is attending a distressed player.Under the VAFA's audible obscenity rule a playercan be sent off, not be reported but be replaced -the only time in Amateur football that thiscondition exists . If this is the case the field umpirewill hold in the air a yellow card to indicate to allthat this is the case . This is to avoid the confusionthat often exists when players are ordered off .No yell ow card - the player has been reported andcannot be replaced until 15 minutes actual playingtime has elapsed.More on new rules as the season unfolds .

SPONSORS

VAFAUA would like to thank the followingsponsors for their continuing support towards theAssociation - Sportscover, Schweppes, PersonalMortgage Managers .UNIFORMS

Today, most of the field and boundary umpires willfeel 'brand new!' in their new uniforms . Theuniforms are finally completed and ready for wearand tear. The field umpires have been allocated acoloured number on the back of their shirts fo r

(D THE Presidents', Sec retaries' and Members,30th season launch at Crown Casino was a hit last,°eek. The new venue was ideal for before-and-afterfunction entertainment.

Highlights:-Business and AFL power-weight John Elliott, anold Carey boy, appeared to have no official role yet heturned up and enjoyed himself as one of the crew .

1 i(. was swamped during the breaks by fans and foesu-V!ng to get a word in and Big Jack supported the5 m o1:eFrce policy during the function ..Nancy McTaggart joined her late husband Georgeas a Life Member and she stole the show with thisduring her acceptance speech: -Ibis is the proudestmoment of my life" .Nancy joins Norma Fullerton, who was at the

launch, as the only women to be life members (moreon this next issue).

-Life Membership also to retiring president AndrewLangford-Jones who described the acknowledgmentas : " . . .special and wonderful" .ALJ, a former Haileybury and VAFA coach, threetimes went to court on VAFA matters during his reignand he handled the delicate issues professionally .His connection with Amateur Football spans fourdecades.-The Ansett Australia Media Personality of theYear was rightly given to The Age's Paul Daffey. His feature article at the start of last season headlinedFor The Love of the Game had a bit to do with thiscolumn firing up .Based on Paul's remark, that "I am welcomed by allofficials" he must be a unique journalist - mostscribes have a few places that are chilly even duringthe hot pre-season!-The famous four: Michael Blood, John Bowen,Andrew Dillon and Dan Richardson were given thePersonality (sic) of the Year Award .They are the only Old Xavs to have played in all six oftheir consecutive A Section flags. Records are sketchyon whether that is a first (Uni Blacks did the same 50years ago) but they are definitely the first to share thethis award which was struck at the inaugural dinnerand has been won only by individuals until now .Good touch to see each given a Cyan Press framedpicture of the four celebrating on Headquartersmoments after their latest triumph .-Next edition will have a wrap of the Merit Awardwinners and Australian Sport Medal winnersacknowledge at the night .-Essendon CEO Peter Jackson gave a wonderful

guest speech and it wasn't only about the issues ofincome generation for the AFL's dominant club .Peter recalled his day as a victim at the VAFA tribunalin the 1970s when he ended up being reprimandedfor his testimony even though he explained to theumpire at the time of the report he wasn't involved!Noel Rundle dined out on this line.-New president Richard Evans noted that apartfrom the 5000 players involved in our competitionthere are another 2000 volunteers required each, week.Appropriate recognition in this The Year of theVolunteer.Mr Evans quoted the American Medical Journal

(September 2000) that people involved in team sportshad a 62 per cent less chance of being involved in

crime or drug abuse and he asked : "Why can't they(the latest national drug campaign) depict the positiveaspects of getting involved and have contact numbers

for Football Victoria at the end of commercials ?

"Are we not ideally placed to have a positive influenceon men and women in this state?"Spot on .-Bombshell of the evening came from Old Scotchthat has replaced its senior coach on the eve of theseason .This is a legitimate case . The incumbent BrendanMason, a police training officer, indicated during hisre-appointment that he might be swamped by workso assistant coach and club pin-up Andrew Smithhas stepped up to the plate .Andrew played 299 games with one of Australia'smost famous clubs before retiring at the end of thecentury .Will the selection panel convince Andrew to play onelast time or will the coach have the final say?Brendan will continue in a coaching role.

0 Still at the Cardinals and one of itsadministrators and VAFA executive John Bell haslittle time away from organising sports clubs.John works for the MCC in its cricket program andthree weeks ago at the VCA Premier Final at theAlbert Ground he was did an excellent job lookingafter the player and guest facilities.JB - you've done it again !

Also spotted at the Premier Final was VAFA C-Dcoach George Voyage."I've captained the StKilda Fourths for two seasons,"explained George .The Saints won the title in a thriller.got a point? beitzelbCalphalink .com .au

The Football Integration DevelopmentAssociation (FIDA) returns to the field thisweek for Round 1 of competition atElsternwick Park (Sunday April 29) .

This season will see 3 Divisions made up ofrelative estimates of abilities .

Division 1 is for higher functioning players,

Division 2 for teams with a general mix of

both higher and lower functioning players

and Division 3 that will cater for lower

functioning teams .

It is the vision of the FIDA Executive for allclubs who field teams in Division 1 to alsofield a team in Division 3 to assist with playeroverflow.

Another major change will be that Division 1will be the only teams to play for both pointsand percentage, Division 2 will compete forpoints only (percentage only being used todetermine ladder positions), and Divisions 3will not play for points at all, but mainly theopportunity to compete against one another .

Round 1 Preview

Hawthorn host South Yarra 1 with bothteams hell bent on improving on last year'swin loss ratios . The Hawks with the extraexperience should finish in front.

The other match at 10am sees RingwoodBlues challenge iVloonee Vally (previouslyKeilor) . Neither team were consistent enoughto challenge the ladder leaders in 2000 andboth will be keen to get off to a good starttoday - the Blues in a close one.

Mambourin Tigers play Parkside who havemoved from Section 1 to 2 due to a lack ofplayer numbers . Given Parkside's ability fromprevious years the match should be a ripper, the Division 2 Premiers from 2000 the Tigersfavoured in the finish .

Geelong 2 versus South Yarra 2 is anunknown with South Yarra producing theirfirst Division 3 team in its short history . Theyoung Cats will be pleased to come upagainst some opposition of similar ilk and forthis reason their greater experience shouldhold them in good stead .

Ballarat will be still smarting from beingrunners-up in 2000 and Geelong 1 despitetheir strong numbers and playing personnelwill feel the brunt of a fired up Knights unittoday.

Karingal 2 and Bendigo 2 go head to headand if last year's results are any indicationthe Bulls should prove too strong, howeverthe Warriors are never to be taken lightly andwould not surprise should they get hometoday.

Karingal 1 and Broadmeadows 1 face off inwhat will be a beauty . The Kangas are a yearolder and likewise the Bulls. The Kangas havebeen improving week by week each year andcould well be ready to challenge the big gunsof Division 1 . One thing's for sure the Bullswill not have it all their own way today. TheBulls by a whisker.

The final match pits Maribyrnong Bulldogsagainst Colac. Expect Colac to be betterperformed than 2000 where they were clearlyoutclassed in Division 1 . The Bulldogs areasurprise packet annually and on this formthe Colac boys are tipped to open theiraccount .

Broadmeadows 2 and Bendigo 1 begin the

season with a week's break due to byes in

their respective sections .

Good luck to all teams, coaches, playersand umpires today .

Page 38: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2001

The return of the football season not onlybrings with it the normal expectations butthis year it also sees the return of the dualreporting style that was so highly regardedduring the Bremner/Brain era of sportsreporting.

What Peter Thinks:

After an extra-long break, flrstly with theearly finish to the season due to theOlympics, and with the late start due toEaster, we have returned! !

And what better way to start the season thanwith last season's D4 Grand Final Replaybetween South Melbourne Districts andBentleigh.

South Were too strong on thato

being aware ccasion and I will say, admittedly withou

tpersonnel (rn of any changes to player

y caveat always for games earlyin the season), that I will pick the Bloodsagain today.

Another game which promises to be a hot

contest is that of Richmond Central andFitzroy Reds

. The Cobras are alwaysthereabouts while the Reds will be looking toreturn to D2 at the first attempt

. The word isthat Fitzroy have looked pretty handy in pre-season, and while Richmond are usuallydifficult to beat at home, the Roys are it forme .

EIsternwickplay host to Albert park, who

gained a reprieve from relegation to D4 due toother clubs' circumstances

. Elsternwickwere always competitive last year, their mid-

table fate only confirmed in the final weeks ofthe season

. Albert Park will want to make themost of their reprievai, but Will probablystruggle today (but heed the caveat)

. Wicks towin .

Hawthorn Amateurs entertain UgSOB atRathmines Road. The Hawks will again be an

influential team in this year's competitionafter falling short last season (when as aguest columnist, I tipped them as m

y36

"smokey")and UHSOBwill be

looking to improve on last year's effort .Hawthorn's solid core of veterans along withthe coaching smarts of Peter Tyson shouldsee them win comfortably.

Finally, Nionash Gryphonshit the road,

Playing away to St . John's OC in a toughopening encounter. Probably Grythetphs g

eoughtestit

road trip all year, at least th eout of the way early

. Monash have recruitedWell, and have at times looked top class intheir practice matches

. However, letting myhead rule my heart, I'll pick the JOCs totriumph in an entertaining contest

.

What Ed thinks:

Bentleighfor me in the Grand Final replay .T

hefeaeytwill still be smarting from last year's

d, having fallen at the last hurdle.

Should be a great game and one that willsurely have an impact for the rest of the year

.Central welcoming the Reds in anotherinteresting encounter

. Richmond farewelled astar or two at the end of last season but didsee the emergance of some new stars late inthe year

. The "Ammo" telegraph is workingovertime on the Reds, great numbers attraining, fantastic recruits and greatfacilities, already Pencilled in by many asbeing the team to beat

. Might get on the bandwagon early, Reds to win .Eisternwick host Albert Park, a side granteda Pardon from demotion

. Coach Murphy hadhis side running as well as anyone's at thestart of last year before injury began to takeits toll

. I expect the Wicks to be right amongstthis year and should start the season in fineform,

Hawthorn against iTni High looks close onpaper. The Hawks will be hoping their

youngsters of last year can take the next stepwhilst Uni High will also be hoping that the

next generation step up . These sidesgenerally split games along home groundlines so maybe the Hawks just .

In the last game for preview, Monash trip to

St.Johns for a tough road trip . Monash haverecruited well and will look to improve onwhat was a disappointing season last year .

St .Johns, on the other hand, will be lookingto build on a promising year in 2000 .

St .Johns are another side I have my eye on in2001 and should get the season of to a goodstart with a win .

For what its worth (and that wouldn't bemuch),- I fancy Reds, Bentleigh, St .Johnsand Elsternwick for the finals, 'Mushy'Jackson from the Reds for the league B+Fand Lauletta from Hawthorn for theGoalkicking.

D4 SECTIONby Gavan Flower

Season 2001 begins seeing the introduction ofnew side Rupert swood into section D4 whilesome last minute swapping has resulted in EleyPark moving back into D4 with Albert Parkreturning to D3, runners-up Bentleigh andPremiers South Melbourne move into D3 . Theseason also has, for the first time in D4 theintroduction of the bye, which will no doubtprovide some valuable respite from the vigoursof a hard season later in the year.Mt.Lilydale has had a solid pre season with aregular core of players attending most nightsand had twenty-five players in attendance in arecent camp to Bacchus Marsh. Twelve newplayers have signed up and all have shown goodform in recent intra-club games . David Keastremains as senior coach and is joined by ex-VFLPaul Cummerford who will take up the reigns inthe twos. The side should look to improve on lastseason's form and could threaten for a valuedfinals birth .

North Brunswick has had an interrupted pre-season with training on three different groundsas the club grapples with local councils . CraigFox has stayed on as senior coach but has seenthe loss of a number of players from lastseason's side, however, a few new faces aroundthe club have replaced these. The club wouldhave been disappointed with last season's finishand would need significant improvement tobetter their finish in the upcoming season.Syndal Tally Ho, buoyed by their finals finishlast season have picked up a large number ofnew players and have had in excess of fiftyplayers attend training. Kevin Hannett hasremained as senior coach and was pleased witha good win in their first practice game. Judgingby the pre-season form, Syndal will be one of theteams to beat in season 2001 .Rupertswood is the new side to D4 after asuccessful campaign in Club 18 last year whereit survived a nail-biter in the preliminary finaland then took out the grade's Grand Final .Located in the hills of Sunbury, the homeground advantage will be one factor that willweigh heavily in the sides favour. If it can carrythe form it had last season and also strengthenits reserves it could be one of the surprise

packets of thecompetition r thisseason:

Swinburne University is anothewould have been disappointed with their forthe 2000, season and' would be - looking tostrengthen its ranks with the new influx ofstudents for the new season . However, as withmany university sides, form can fluctuate withplayer availabilities and the side may find itdifficult to match it with some of the betterquality sides as the season progresses .

Werribee Amateurs have continued theirbuilding process and have significantlyincreased their player stocks thanks to anumber of past players returning to the cluband the progression of players from their under19 side . Their results in practice matches havebeen encouraging and the numbers at pre-season training have been consistent. The sidehas failed to impress in past seasons and will bedearly hoping that their building strategies paydividends in 2001, however, experience doescount for a lot in D4 and it may still be anothercouple of seasons before the side becomes a realforce in the grade.

Bulleen Cobras were solid on 2000 withoutbeing outstanding and are well poised toimprove on last season's form. Numbers havebeen good in the pre season and whispersaround D4 are that the club is quietly confidentto give the front-runners a run for their moneyin the upcoming season.

St .Mary's have had a number of retirementsfrom the previous season thanks in part to theirreserve's premiership . They have, however, beenfortunate enough to have had eighteen newplayers attend pre-season training and mosthave shown they have good form in the clubstwo intra-club matches. Peter Olivieri hasremained as senior coach and would dearly liketo improve on the clubs mediocre result from the2000 season . It is hoped by the club a numberof the reserves who played in the premiershipside last season can replicate their feats in thefirsts, however, the with a new mix of players itmay find the going tough early in the season .Eley Park have probably experienced the worst

Page 45: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2001

prcnliership hangover in the history of the VAFAn,he11 up until two weeks ago, only five playershad e_,pressed interest in playing in season 2001112 d the club was on the brink of folding. Theclub was therefore "demoted" to D4, aftero~liltiug promotion to D3 for their 1999 flag, inorder to try and save the club . Through the

efforts of the committee by door knocking andmail drops; they have been able to assemble

,_,lou'511 players to continue . Time will tell as theSeason progresses but it appears as though theclub ~vill struggle through season 2001 until the

; players get to know each other a little better.

old Westbourne has had disappointingw, imbcrs on the track with an average of onlywx, rt"= players in attendance most training

1 ;o1rts. The practice match form has, however, hen quite solid with a narrow loss to D3 side,Itichmond Centrals and a victory against a local

FDFL side . Jeff Wilson has stayed on as coach,&hough he will most likely not be donning theboots to continue his club B&F from of last

season . There will be a need for muchimprovement of their disappointing 2000 seasonform if the side is to threaten the finals this

season.

The Eltham Turtles have appointed a new,captain/coach at the club, Brian Doody, winnerof the club's past two best and fairest awardsand he has worked well in the off seasonretaining all but one from the 2000 finals seniorside. New assistant coach Wayne Hansen whooriginates from the Diamond Valley league joinshim. The Turtle's form in the clubs two practicematches has been good with a solid victory inone of the games . Once again the Turtles will betough to beat at home and should be amongstthe final's action again this season .

Match Previews

Mt Lilydale vs. Eltham O C

Eltham makes the trip out to Mt.Lilydale andboth teams with their good preparations wouldwant to get the new season kick started with avictory. The Turtles new coach, Brian Doody willwant to stamp his authority early as the Elthamside begins their premiership campaign, however, Mt.Lilydale will be a tough side to beatat home . With Doody continuing his B&F formthe Turtles should prove too strong in thisencounter to win by 15 points.

North Brunswick vs. Eley Park

North Brunswick may well have had aninterrupted pre-season with a variety of groundchanges, but this pales in comparison to thedisastrous start Eley Park have experienced .

a lot at stake early in the season, I think

North Brunswick will prove too strong for theundermanned Eley Park and will commencewith a win by 35 points .

Syndal Tally Ho vs. St.Mary' s

Syndal Tally Ho has had a dream preparationand is poised to take the next step in their questfor a D4 premiership . St.Mary's, however, arenot to be underestimated and with a lot of newyoung blood in the side, the support of radiopersonality Ernie Sigley as club president, theycould provide some stiff competition . However,Syndal have a great desire to commence theircampaign with a victory and should beatSt.Mary's by 19 points .

Rupertswood vs. Bulleen Cobras

Bulleen Cobras is the first team to make the epicjourney out to Sunbury to take on the new boysin D4 in Rupertswood . Rupertswood will bebuoyed by their 2000 club 18 premiership andhave a distinct home ground advantage. On theother hand, Bulleen would have beendisappointed to have missed out on the finalslast season and would dearly like to start their2001 campaign with a positive and should runout victors by 28 points .

Werribee Amateurs vs. Old Westbourne

Werribee Amateurs will christen its newly laidturf at Soldiers Reserve against local side OldWestbourne boasting a plethora of new playersand keen to start the season off on a positive .Old Westbourne on the other hand will berelying on experienced campaigners like Justinand Andrew Horsburgh and Glen Robson to leadfrom the front . The two sides have developed arivalry and results are often close, however, OldWestbourne's experience will tell against the newlook Werribee side and see it victorious by 18points .

Swinburne University has the bye in round 1 .

TREATING THAT INJURYLast time we spoke about the first 48 hours in the freatment of an ankle or knee injury. After 48 hours let's begin the rehab .

For both ankle and the knee reducing swelling, promoting healing, maintainingstability are essential features of getting the player back on track. We may use laser, orbiofeedback or interferential at first, together with soft tissue massage and stretching .

Later proprioception or ability to balance functionally using wobble boards and avariety of practical drills is critical before returning to training . Maintaining some aerobicfitness during that time using an exercise bike even if only pedalling with one leg is alsoimportant .

SECTION 1

U1 9 SECTIONby Tony Miller (U19/1 & Blue)

Adam Mc Nicol (tl19/2 & Red)

Welcome to the 2001 season of VAFA Unde r19 football! This year there will be aRepresentative Team from all 4 sectionsplaying against the Victorian MetropolitanFootball League. I ask coaches, players andadministrators of clubs to take this game veryseriously ; we need your full commitment inplayer assessments and recommendations .Make sure the nomination forms are in byRound 3 and congratulations to the playerswho make the squad.

Now that all those Easter eggs have beeneaten and those extra kilos are gone from longhours on the track, all teams are set to firethis week in Round 1 . Congratulations to thenewly promoted Beaumaris & Old Scotch, who play off against each other in the GrandFinal Replay . Congratulations to the VAFA indeciding to have a Final 5! Some questionsneed to be asked that only the 'season' willanswer . Can the Football Director maintainthe same intensity now that he is looking afterhis burgeoning football teams and family? Can Xavs go one better or are they happy toplay 'second fiddle'? Can the Blues finish offthe season? Can Old B . continue with theirexcellent improvement from last year? CanCollegians get their paperwork right so theycan play finals football? Will De La go for the5 in the first half or just rely on their 2nd halfrun home? Can St . B.'s who promised somuch, finally deliver? Can O .M.'s, Marcellinand Mazenod get their acts together and playmore consistently ?

Round 1 sees a number of great matches inthe G.F. replay from Section 2 in Old Scotchat home to Beaumar3s. Alas I don't think OldS. can reverse the previous result. Beaumarisfor me . O.M.'s travel to Victoria Park to meetManni's Xavs. Unfortunately the drive backfor O.M.'s won't be much fun . The Directorunveils his new look Premiership team onRighetti Oval against the Uni Blue Boys in agame they should win well . St . Bernard's areat home at the College to Maaenod . St . B .'s

have anumber ofn e wrecruitsthat will undoubtedly make an impression inSection i this year (or have I made anAssumption?) and prove too strong for thetravelling Nodders . Marcellin at home will bea tough team to get over this year, but I justcan't forget the outstanding form of Old B.'s .O .B.'s to win! Finally De La are at home toCo llegians with two new coaches looking fortheir lst win . Unsure on this one, so I'll go forthe home team . Well done, Browny!

SECTION 2

The action kicks off for the new season withOld Flaileybury hosting Yarra Va lley. OldHaileybury will be keen to improve on itsdisastrous season in section one last year, theclub managing to win just one game . YarraValley gets another chance in section twodespite finishing second last with just fivewins in 2000 . Ormond has been promotedfrom Section (2) Blue, despite its loss in lastyear's preliminary final, and will be a forceafter a tough pre-season . Ormond take onOld Essendon, which last year dominatedsection 2 Red, finishing a game clear on top ofthe table, but was then eliminated from thefinals in straight sets, eventually losing aclassic preliminary final to North Old Boys bytwo points . Melbourne High host OldIvanhoe in what should be an entertainingclash, the Hoes also surviving in Section 2despite taking home the wooden spoon lastyear. Hampton Rovers and Old Trinityshapes as one of the matches of the round, with both sides keen to improve on their mid-table finishes in 2000. Old Trinity waseliminated in the first semi-final byWhitefriars, who host Werribee, in whatshould be an entertaining clash . Werribee isa fresh face in the U 19's for season 2001 andwill be keen to show that it can challenge fora place in Section 1 . The final game of theround sees Caulfield Grammarians take o n

52

Page 53: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2001

St . Leos, both clubs having moved up from

Section 2 Blue . Both sides have recruited wellas they endeavour to push towards the top

fl ;ghl and will be keen for a first up victory .

UNI}ER 19 (2) BLUE

Section Blue sees two new teams in thecompetition from Section 1 clubs . St . Kevin's

,, nd Xavs. St . Kevin's 2 is being coached bySteve Clarke, Premiership runner up, playern-ith power-house and Old Xavs by Nick Fay a

Former player.

r .ound 1 sees Monash Blues at home to St . K.

1 can.'t pick against practice match form so theBlues to win well . Oakleigh are at home to

;v,avs in what should be an interesting match .130th dubs beat St . K. by 4 goals in practicematches, but due to Oakleigh's overall heightand their big F .F ., Oaks by 2 goals. SouthMelbourne host Ajax in a game in which theSwans should dominate from start to finish .They will need to keep the ball in the air as

.last year, but if it stays on the ground, thesmall running Ajax team might just get closeenough to cause an upset; I think not! TheSwans by 8 goals . Coach Buntine for De Lahas the week off, so I expect to see him downat the Glen Eira v . Mentone game . This willbe a fantastic contest! Mentone haverecruited well but will be tested by the PackerBoys, bolstered by the return of Mimmo,

Cassair, Clarke and the Ali's who are muchstronger and hungrier. Glen Eira just!

SECTION 2 RED

The match of the round sees Therry Penolahost 2000 Section (2) Red premiers OldCamberwell . Therry Penola boasted animpressive 11-7 win-loss record last year butstill finished two games out of the finals andwill be keen to atone for a season of missedopportunities . Old Paradians welcomeBulleen Templestowe, both sides coming offless than impressive seasons in 2000 . OldParadians failed to win a game in Section 1,but should be more competitive in the lowergrade, while Bulleen Templestowe couldmanage just five victories last year in thissection. Uni Blacks, which missed the finalsby just one game last year, hostIvanhoe/Fitzroy, the Blacks as usualboasting plenty of numbers at this early stage .Early victories are a must for the Uni side, before holidays and exams start to distractmany players from the task. Aquinas take onRupertswood and if last season is anything togo by it could be a long day for the home side .Rupertswood was eliminated in the first semi-final by North Old Boys last year, whileAquinas won the wooden spoon, managingjust two victories for the season. Beatengrand finalists in this section in 2000, NorthOld Boys, have the bye first up .
