The master of preparation did an excellent job ofgetting the foundations right when the clubwasn't sure where it would play this year and thebigger picture is developing beautifully .
From late in the first term in last week's second-semi final, the Eagles, with a blend of reinventedveterans like Anthony Caffry, six goals, risingruckman, Mark Browne, and established mid-fielders Glenn Cox and David Johnston, held afive-goal buffer over St Bernards for most of restof the match before winning by 38 points.
What a foil Caffry was with the withdrawal ofcaptain Andrew Treganowan, the competition'sleading goalkicker . Trigga took the Fifth on whatwas wrong. Fresh-faced Leigh McMillian replacedTreganowan . Caffry, who has lost his spring,responded to Dahymple's call to keep on leadingin the last term.
Mid-way in the quarter the honest but flat-looking Dogs had come to within 20 points whena goal was snapped by Steve McKeon .

The rain that was forecast did not eventuate,however, as usual, the howling gale that livesin Elsternwick was up to its normal tricks .
Mrs Weddle's lad won the 2-up, and chose toutilise the 5- 6 goal (maybe more) breeze, butright from the first bounce it didn't seem tomatter a cracker . The DLS boys were first tothe ball, and every time their opponent wonpossession, they were wrapped up by 2-3blue and gold junipers . When looking at the1/4 time score line, one could be forgiven forthinking that it was DLS who had the wind .®I were nowhere near out of the contest, butthe 17 pt margin could have been a lot more .
In the 2nd qtr, DLS continued on from theirgood opening stanza, and the momentumwas clearly with the boys from Malvern . Atremendous run-down from behind by thesmallest man in football (Bonnici) typified thedesperation, and no matter what 01 tried todo, nothing went right for them .Unfortunately for the favourites, Hope wasquieter than normal, and the tall forwards ofToovey, Weddle and Branigan were findingthe swirling breeze difficult, nullifying theirsignificant height advantage . As a result, 0 1
faced a half time deficit of 47pts .
To have any hope of winning the game, 01had to kick plenty of goals and kick themquickly. However, that did not eventuate, asDLS, through Corin, Ivlannix and Silversbottled up the play in the dead pocket verywell . For some 10-12 minutes, there werecountless boundary throw-ins and ball-ups,which was frustrating the efforts of OI . Theirintensity had lifted significantly and thisresurgence was led by the nippy Tully, butwere unable to convert this energy into goals,even though DLS were kept scoreless for thequarter. 01 had pegged back the margin to

Tom Hinds joined the Balaclava AFC as asupj"sorter in the mid 80's and during the reignnf Balaclava he was a regular at all games andtraining and donated the meat raffle for all theItome games .
r3al;iclava merged with Glenhuntly St Anthonyin 1991 to form the Glenhuntly AFC and Tomcame along as an avid supporter. Tom joinedthe committee in 1993 becoming vice presidentand remained so until 1998 . During that periodlie was notably a committee member but hasdone every job including purchasing, equipmentcontrol, fund raising, duty officer, cleaning,helped out in the canteen and was the clubinember to the VAFA. I reckon he would haveput himself up for a player if he had beenallowed . Unfortunately Glenhuntly in the late90's could not recruit players and as a resultmerged with St Kilda South Caulfield in 1999 toform the Glen Eira AFC .
Tom's work load was reduced thankfully but he-fill remained he club's member to the VAFA,dutv officer, and looked after the equipment .Unfortunately failing health in the last yeartogether with the death of his wife Nell tooktheir final toll and he passed away September7thThe highlights of his career would undoubtedlybe the premierships of Balaclava '86,Glenhuntly '92 (R) and '94 .To summarise Tom's involvement in football itwould possible be as follows :-a) He was the fella who was there beforeanyone else turned up and he was the fella whowas still there when everyone else went home .b) He was the heart and soul of a footballclub .

Ivanhoe Assumption went down to Banyulein the difficult north wind conditions whichthe Bears worked better on the day than theHoes could manage . In the circumstances,the Bears 6 goal lead at half time was a hugeadvantage, which the regrouped Hoeschipped away at in the second half but werenever able to seriously challenge . The Bearsused the wide wings of Box Hill to great effect,and why the Hoes persisted in trying toattack down the defensive flank will remain amystery. The Hoes did a good containing jobon Luke O'Connell & Scott Playfair, only tosee Dave Witchell pop up with some greatopportunistic goals . It was far from a bigman's day, yet Dave Williams again starred inthe ruck, and gave off a steady stream ofpossessions to his runners all day, some ofhis 2nd & 3rd efforts in ground play wereamazing . Brad Wilimore also dominatedround the ground, always seeming to bewhere the Bears' need was greatest. TheHoes were not far away, a couple of missedset shots with lots of time still on the clock inthe last term could easily have turned therun of play around and, who knows? Their

Old Camberwell and Banyule play off in th(main game, and with both having almost fullists to pick from, they will be at their peakWithout doubt these two sides were thosfthat the rest of the Section feared most, everthough both had injury problems at variowstages. Both are strong up forward, witlstrong spearheads in Ben Howard (Wells) 8Luke O'Connell (Bears), and each have ~range of ancillary goal kickers, such as Shan(Properjohn & Scott Playfair, to make liftdifficult for opposing defences . Each of thescdefences has been rock solid all year, and thehalf back lines in particular have the addeccharacteristic of both being stron~rebounding machines . FUNdamental phase, Training to train phase, Training tocompete phase, Training to win phase .A successful coach fits one of the following categories :1) Possesses the skills to be able to help their athletessuccessfully make the transition from one phase to thenext . 2) Possesses the self-reflection skills to realise thatwhilst they do not currently posses the technicalknowledge necessary to help athletes make the transitionsbetween phases, they are prepared to learn them . 3)Possesses the maturity to accept that they do not have thecoaching skills, time, experience, and facilities etc to helptheir athletes make the transitions, and has theprofessionalism to refer them to another coach who does .
The third option, which requires a great deal of maturityon the part of the coach, is often difficult to achieve. Thissituation frequently occurs when the talented athlete andcoach live in a country or regional area where theopportunities for training and competition and access toappropriate facilities are limited.
However, there is a real possibility that at some time in acoach's career, the talent of their athlete will exceed thelevel of knowledge or their skills as a coach. Mien thishappens, the coach needs to make some hard decisionsabout the future direction of their athlete's training andcompetition program.

The coachhas started to talk to the other athletes, asking them tosort out their training gear and get ready to starttraining .Ten seconds before the workout begins, the two 'earlyathletes get out onto the training arena and startwarming up before the session. The other 38 are stillstanding around, looking for equipment, adjustingclothing, filling up water bottles and thinking aboutgetting started . The coach of course by this time isyelling, screaming and getting very frustrated.

With the wind playing havoc with theskills, Bentleigh were able to break out to areasonable lead at quarter time. The Jocs weren'table to take advantage of the wind in the secondquarter, despite the classy Sharp being concussedduring the game. Bentleigh went further aheadduring the third term and appeared set for acomfortable victory. The Jocs had other ideas asHorbury and Coulon clicked into gear. Alas it wastoo little too late as Bentleigh finished three goalsup . The most pleasing feature for Bentleigh wasthe relatively quiet game (by his own loftystandards) of Martin as well as the non-contribution of Sharp due to injury.

In what ultimately turned out to be the mostappropriate match up of the season, the sidesthat finished first and second at the end of thehome and away season will be contesting theGrand Final today at Cheltenham . Fitzroy Redshave taken on and defeated all challengers, andwill certainly be aiming to finish off the season aspremiers and champions . They had a couple ofclass performers in Patrick Jackson and ToddClarke absent in the second semi final betweenthese two teams and if they return, the Redsshould be even more dominant than a fortnightago. That's not to say that Bentleigh aren'tcapable, of an upset, with veterans such as ChrisSharp, Dave Martin and Joel Seeleysupplemented by the likes of young talent such asAdam Henry and Scott Sice . Having said thatthough, just looking through the Fitzroy list, withnames like Drury, Urbancic, Cahill, Mitchell andCurtis to name just a few, well, it looks quitedaunting for any side really . In the final wash-up,I cannot bring myself to go past the Reds and it
would be aninjustice ifthey didn't wi n(but of cours ethey've still got to come out to play on the day) .Fitzroy for mine .

Fitzroy's strength certainly has been its evenness,particularly up forward where they haven't reliedon any one player for their goals . The likes ofMitchell, Ronchi, Diacoglogis, Rawlins and Piditopresent match up problems galore for theopposition brains trust. The same applies in themidfield, where Addicot, Cahill, Jackson andWharfe play an extremely hard working brand offooty. Finally down back, Captain Drury and ToddClarke hold sway. As you can see, a team full ofclass !
Bentieigh are a little more reliant on their starsbut what stars they are! Martin and Sharp areabsolute class operators and capable of causingan upset . For Bentleigh to win however, the youngguns in Henry and Sice will need to star whilst theveterans Jackson and English will need toreproduce last weeks form. The other key factorwill be the need for Bentleigh to pack their kickingboots . They have managed to kick themselves ofprevious encounters with the Reds and won't beafforded the luxury this time .Very hard to go past Fitzroy. Have dominated thegrade like no other side in the VAFA this year andthe game seems set up for them . No discernableweaknesses makes the task of planning verydifficult against the Juggies but no doubt thecagey Ron Gordon has some plans up his sleeve.The only words of caution for Fitzroy is too payhomage to the history of last year, when four ofthe seven premiers were underdogs going into thegame. The Reds will be hoping history doesn'trepeat! Fitzroy for me, by about four goals .

2nd Semi Final
With a ticket into the grand final and D3 atstake, the much-anticipated match betweenRupertswood an d Syndal proved to be a bit ofa fizzer for the supporters who braved theelements last Saturday.
In their most important game to date,Rupertswood were made to look second rateagainst a more focused and determined Syndaloutfit . Syndal have been the yardstick for mostof the season and would still have had thethought of their recent defeat to Rupo at thefront of their minds when they took to the field .Syndal did not even give Rupertswood a look inas they tagged the Rupertswood playmakersout of the match and negated their much-publicised running game . With the supply cutoff to the Rupertswood forwards, Syndalpressed home the advantage and were never inthreat for the entire match to eventually win by59 points .
In the reserves, the weeks rest proved enoughfor Syndal as they took on North Brunswickand finished the stronger of the two teamswinning by 17 points to make it a great day forthe Syndal Tally Ho football club .
1st Semi Final
Much like Pete Sampras' defeat to LaytonHewitt at the US Open, the S windauraaeRazorbacks ensured that Bulleen was sentpacking in a straight sets exit from the finalscampaign .
A late withdrawal of Robert Cavicciolo had theSwinburne team a little worried before thecentre bounce, however, in the openingquarter, his Razorback teammates around thecentre and across halfback gained the earlyascendancy. With Ciaran Higgins and JasonPiotrowski providing plenty of drive on both
wings, an amplesupply wasmaintained to theR a z o r b a c kforwards. Inparticular was the seemingly unstoppable,Jason Murchie who kicked three goals for thequarter despite some close Cobra attention.
With a three goal lead going into the secondquarter, Swinburne were able to add a couplemore to establish a six goal lead midivaythrough the quarter. With Bulleen plavmaker,Aug Gencarelli being well held by AdrianFiumani, Bulleen were looking likely to buckle .However, some great work around the groundby Bandanjek, Paul & Mark DallOlglio andMatty D'Angelo enabled the Cobras to clawback the lead to go into half time only threekicks behind .
Kicking the first after half time, Bulleen werewithin two and the Razorbacks appeared to berattled, however, some undisciplined playaround the ground saw a few 25 metrepenalties and free kicks awarded down theground at critical times in the quarter . Thisallowed Swinburne to steady and go into thefinal quarter with an 11-point margin .
It went goal for goal in the nail biting lastquarter and as the pressure mounted, theback lines became dominant and some easyshots on goal by both tearns went begging .Brett O'Mara then broke free to register amajor to give the Razorbacks a much-needed20-point buffer . Bulleen added another beforethe final siren, but it was not enough asSwinburne continued their charge to win by 16points .
In the reserves, Bulleen won fought back froman early three-goal deficit against St .Mary's tobook their ticket to the preliminary final with awell-deserved 15-point victory . Good playersfor the Cobras were Sammy Petrilli, JasonCartledge, Rick Rigoni, Joe Trinchi, Fab Baldi,Pembo and Tony Mazzarella in a great teameffort .

Both teams have had their injury problems inthe finals thus far, and this may play a role in,,,,ho will be victorious today . The Razorbackshave lost Michael Debono with a brokencollarbone while Rupo have missed D Mac who
v; as injured late in the season . Swinburne willbe closely watching the fitness of their star halfback Cavicciolo with interest and would dearlylove his presence to control the supply to theRupertswood forwards .
The battle between the two leading fullforwards of the competition will be worth theadmittance price alone today. With the leadinggoal kicker in D4 at one end for Rupertswoodin Whitehead, and Murchie at the other, if theplaying conditions suit, it may turn out to be ashoot out of the for-wards to see who winthe match and receive the promotion to D4 anda shot at the premiership .
So far this year I have tipped one winner fromfour matches and therefore to the team I pick,I apologize for the "kiss of death" . Having notgone with Swfnburne this finals campaign, Iam tempted to jump onto the bandwagon whilethere is still room, however, I find it hard toimagine Rupertswood dropping two in a rowafter their sensational season . I think if theycan get their running game happening againand hopefully keep Murchie to fewer than fourgoals, they should have enough in the tank tosee them home in an epic battle to win by 12Points.

Reserve - (2nd XVIII teams) Players must be
registered and must have played at least two (2)
reserve grade matches and not more than ten (10)senior matches in the home and away games (first
round) . Where both first and second XVIII's are
playing on the same day the reserve grade player
must only have played two (2) games in either the
seniors or reserves to qualify. For clubs with
teams drawn in semi finals on different days of the
same weekend (ie . 1st semi Saturday, 2nd semi
Sunday - read as above teams playing on thesame day) .
Under-19 teams - Players must be registered andhold a permit. If a player has played an aggregateof more than 5 senior and reserve matches hemust have played more than 5 Under-19 matchesduring the season . If a player is ineligible due tohaving played more than 5 senior and reservematches and does not gain selection in his club'ssenior team in the first second round match, he isthen eligible to play in any subsequent Under 19final . Where a team has (2) U19 teams or is
involved in hybrid arrangement, the followingshall apply. Where a club has two U19 teams aplayer must have not played more than 1 0matches with the U19 1 side to play in the (2)team. To represent the hybrid team in the finalsthe player must have represented the hybrid teamin (5) first round matches - not including finals .
Club XV111 teams - Players must be registeredand have played in at least four (4) Club XVIIImatches and not have played in more than a totalof eight (8) senior and reserve matches during thefirst round .
An AFL or I, Este r will be eligible toplay in the finals for his VAFA club as long as hehas played a minimum of five (5) VAFA matches forthe team he wishes to represent in the finals . Atleast two (2) of these matches must have beenplayed after June 30th .
A°i'AC Under 18 player must have played five (5)VAFA matches for the VAFA team he wishes torepresent in the finals . For TAC players there is norequirement to play a certain number of matchesafter June 30th .

SECTION 1 - 2nd Semi Final
The toss of the coin saw Old Scotch kick with a 5gbreeze . The main match-ups read, O'Kane vHosking, Ross v Rodski, Farrow v Watts and Quail vMcDonnell . At first break, Old Scotch led by 3g butthe question was whether they could hold Xavs . Athalf time, Xavs led by 2pts in a fast, rugged andtough game of football. Biddlecombe was proving areal handful whether at CHF or CHB . Ross wasdoing well on Rodski, as were the other match-ups .This third quarter was going to be decisive ; and itwas . Xavs came out and dominated the centerclearances and around the packs . Ross dominatedat CHB & when running down the ground -damaging. 5g - lg against the breeze was anoutstanding effort . Donovan's Cardinals fought thegame out in the last but the 'horse had alreadybolted'. For Xavs, Quinn, Lopresti & McDonnell weredamaging around goals. For Old Scotch - the 'rollercoaster' continues!

This elimination final saw two evenly matched teamsready to do battle at Kavanagh Reserve vying for thatPreliminary Final . The game opened with Gissingruck roving, Umbers on Legudi and O'Donnell atCHF. This quarter was tough and physical, with St .Bernard's ahead by 2g, but SKOBS missing a coupleof easy shots . The game was evenly poised! Thesecond quarter saw St. Bernard's dominant from themiddle through Buras & Bouzikas to the forwardswhere O'Donnell, Legudi & Neeson wereunstoppable . At half time the Director swung thechanges and appealed for his charges to 'persist' - toplay on and kick to open spaces . Again, St .Bernard's dominated with O'Donnell & Legudimarking everything & Neeson crumbing goals . 8g tolg saw St. Bernard's lead by 95pts at the lastchange. The last quarter saw Cousland finish offSKOBS with 4g from the wing. This was a fantasticTEAM performance from a very well drilled side.SECTION 2 - 2nd SE FINAL - WERRIBEE vCAULFIELI3
Well, Caulfield certainly surprised many watchers ofUnder 19 football by thrashing Werribee by 31points and moving straight into the grand final. Hoton the heels of their thumping victory over OldIvanhoe in the qualifying final, Caulfield startedslowly and trailed at the first two breaks. But sixgoals to two in the second half saw Caulfield run outvery impressive winners and gain premiershipfavoritism . Browne, Foster, Napier and Fallu were

Despite the shockingconditions, the game was a tremendous contest forthe first half, with the Hoes going into the long breakjust eight points in front . But the second half was adifferent game, the Hoes booting seven goals tothree, although the margin could have been a lotgreater had they turned a few of their 13 behindsinto goals . P Dinakis and M Luxon were strong focalpoints up forward for the winners, booting four andthree goals respectively, while C . Lynch, S . Curatoloand M Clarke were among the best players. UNDER 19 (2) BLUE - Preliminary Final
The first quarter provided a very even contest withonly a goal separating Mentone & South MelbourneDistricts at the first break . The second saw Mentoneget their running game going and provided plenty ofopportunities for their forwards to score goals .Subsequently 6g to 2g resulted in them being 49ptsup at half time. Coach McKillop rallied his team atthe main break and they came out firing to kick 5gto lg to put them back within 26pts. The stage wasset for a terrific last quarter but it was Mentoneagain that flexed it's muscles to run out winners by38pts . The secret to this side is their overall physicalstrength around the ground and their willingness toput their bodies on the line for their mates . Werribee will be smarting after their loss to Caulfieldlast weekend, while Old Ivanhoe should haveregained some confidence after comfortablyaccounting for Old Trinity. The true benefits of theweek's might not have been realised by Werribee inthe second-semi but it might just give them the edgein the preliminary, as Old Ivanhoe are fronting up for,heir third tough final in a row. LTADZR 19 (2) BLUE -Grand Fina l
This Grand Final sees Mentone v Ajax who wereclearly the best two teams in the competition.Menton were able to dispose of Ajax twice throughthe season, but in the all-important 2nd Semi, Ajaxiurned the table with a come from behind win tobook a week's holiday. Now Mentone have their
chance for retribution! Coach O'Connor would wellremember that Van Aken, Blieden, Givoni, Miller,Lewis and Cooper were the main players thatbrought the Jackers back into the game . He wouldalso remind his charges that you have to play fourfull quarters of football against this team . Ajax havea terrific group of players who continually run allday, preserve themselves at the contest & mostimportantly back up their mates . Coach Zuker onthe other hand, knows that he will have to try andcover the marking power of Mentone . Hayes acrossthat forward line will be extremely dangerous, but hecan't do it by himself. He needs the likes of Atherton,Sullivan, Little and Rocke to stand up and beaccountable . For Mentone to win this Grand Final,they will need to get back and play that aggressive,hard at the ball football and kick long and quicklyinto the forward line, which they will to win by l5pts .
