Successful Vote Count Evening .Another successful evening was held last Monday

evening at the Carlton Crest Hotel. I would like to, onbehalf of the Executive, thank my dedicated Adminis-trative staff of Sue Anderson, Brett Connell and AngelaGiles for their fantastic contribution to what I thought wasa wonderful evening . I should also include in this list parttime staffer Cliff Bastow (VAFA registration secretary) whocollates all votes during the season, prepares all printoutsand in general is at my side throughout the night keepingme "on cue".

Each club secretary has had mailed to him or her afull rundown of the votes earned for their club so thoseinterested should contact their club for all details .Major award winners were:A sec . Best and fairest - Michael Blood (Old Xaverians)B sec . Best and Fairest - Marcus Dollman (St Kevins)C sec Best and Fairest - Anthony Macgeorge

(St Bedes Mentone Tigers )D sec . Best and Fairest - Michael Hazell (SalesianOC)E East Best and Fairest - Nick Vasilopoulos (Old Carey)E South Best and Fairest - Leigh Murphy (Elsternwick)E Central Best and Fairest - Aaro n Thege

(Old Xaverians)Club 18/2 - Simon Dimattina (Marcellin)The inaugural winner of the Blades Umpire of the YearAward was presented to field umpire Mark Gibson .The Blades Club Champion of the Year received51500 .As announced last week Old Xaverians took outthis award .UHSOB and Beaumaris received S1500 each for jointlysharing the Quit Incentive Club Awards whilst St .Kevins received $500 for being runner-up in this award.

University Blues Under 19 team won the 1997 QuitMost Disciplined Team Award.

And now onwards for the biggest prizes ofall . .A FI.AG!

Well done to the E section premiers Southbank (E

F,

South), University Blacks(E Central) and YarraValley Old Boys (E East) .Not only premiers butalso worthy teams to be promoted to D section for 1998 . Amini "win" also to St Pats-Mentone, who lost the final toSouthbank, but who won promotion to D section for next sea-son (12 teams) as they were the highest placed team at theend of the home and away matches who lost a Grand Final.

Other premierships being contested this weekendbeing C, D and Under 19 sections and next weekendthe two big ones - in A section will it be Old Xaverians(three in a row) or will Old Haileybury or Old Scotch whowill come from behind and steal the flag from the reigningpremiers and outright favourites for this year's flag ?

In B section last weekend Old Brighton looked fairlyimpressive and should win. I'm sure St . Kevins andMelbourne High School Old Boys who meet this weekendfor the right to challenge Old Brighton will have other ideas .

Noel Rundle has dared me to predict the four seniorpremierships left in the season, and as Treasurer haspromised me a Christmas bonus should I pick four out offour - so here goes : Old Xaverians (A) ; St Kevins (B);North Old Boys (C) and in D section - Old Geelong!(l real-ly need to pick a draw here - living in Beaumaris but beinga Geelong fan )

A story to finish with .Picture the scene . Yours truly takes the call (late

Saturday morning) that a young goal umpire appointed todo the B sec. Reserves final is so sick he can't officiate .With only minutes to the game quick phone calls to possi-ble replacements are unanswered . In walks an old matefrom Haileybury coaching days . Roscoe dons white sunhat, white slicker, VAFA tie, is thrust two flags and is pro-pelled out on to the turf of EP. An independent observer(from the AFL) has been asked to have a close look at theyounger" umpire as, if he looks the goods, he will be given

an U/ 19 grand final and will possibly be invited to the VFLnext year. John Hall (goalies advisor) thinks "his" boy willget a great report - he is aghast to read "his" boy appearedtoo casually dressed ; walked too far from his behind thegoals area : engaged in social banter with spectators and atthe breaks seemed to be too preoccupied with talking tothe CEO and adopting an altogether "English cricketumpire" approach to this exacting science.

Se ri ously, best wishes to Shannon and thanks toRoscoe .

A SECTION3mokeftee by Jason Frenkel

Confident Old Xaverians supporters were rubbingtheir hands with delight on Sunday evening hav-

ing witnessed Xavs dispose of Scotch in a gritty vic-tory which secured a berth in next week's GrandFinal . An incredible feat - the threepeat - is up forgrabs and last Sunday's win placed Xaverians in thebox seat to claim the premiership for the third con-secutive year. If Xavs want to get that winning feelingthey ought to gather around ruckman, skipper an dWoodrow Medal winner Michael Blood, who took outthe coveted award last Monday night . It will sit nicelyalongside his premiership medallions and his JockNelson award, too . Blood won a prize in the raffle onthe night too, proving he just cannot put a foot wrong .

Spare a thought, however, for the enigmaticRedleg Micah Berry , who polled the highest numberof votes but was ruled ineligible because of a suspen-sion .

It was a phyrric victory of sort for Xavs, andbloody too . Gladman and Brennan were among thecasualties in a tough. physical encounter. From theopening bounce Xavs showed a preparedness to workhard for the ball and pressure the opposition when, they weren't in possession and Scotch were signifi-cantly frustrated in their efforts to utilise a stiffbreeze blowing on the scoreboard end in the firstterm . Ockleshaw's early goal into the breeze provedto be handy and when Scotch had registered just 2 .3for the quarter, an opportunity had been missed .

Just how great that opportunity was became evi-dent in the second quarter when Xavs booted 9 .4 to0.1 in a match-winning quarter of football . TheCardinals looked at all sea as the ball was repeatedlyswept into the Xavs forward line with ease . Dillon,Wood and Hunter were all among the goalkickersthat term as Xavs on-ballers and forwards slottedthrough majors from everywhere . Facing an eight goaldeficit at half-time . the Cardinals' fate was all butsealed . Wayne Harmes implored his players to sal-vage something for themselves - and the Scotch faith-ful - in his three-quarter time address, and to someextent they did with a six goal final quarter into thewind but one suspects the Cardinals might just be abit toey as they face a confident Bloods side today . Onthe bright side for Scotch was the ubiquitous RohanPrice's effort last Sunday, working hard and runningall day in a desperate bid to give the Cardinals drivewhile Wilson and Collins continued their good formfrom the home-and-away series . Ultimately it was aday for the defenders, however, with Brushfieid nul-lifying any impact Aujard hoped to have on the gameand Holmes blanketing the dangerous CampbellHeath . At the other end of the ground . Adam

Nettleton stoppedDan Richardson from ( f~having any influencewhile Jeremy Lairdhad a more even duel with Matt Bourke, who fin-ished with four goals.

PREVIEW

Either Nettleton or Laird will be assigned thetask today on the Bloods burly full forwardEfstathiou . The youngster has in bursts proven to bea potent target in front of goals . Combined withAndrew Walden's leading role as playmaker in theBloods forward line, Efstathiou, Hucker and Moreyare more than capable of kicking a winning score andshould prove to be a handful for the likes ofNettleton, Holt, Laird and Grigg, who could findhimself standing Walden .

Scotch are not short on scoring potential eitheralthough it took them far too long to get a decentscore on the board last week with just 2 .4 at half-time . Although Rohan Aujard had little influence onthe game Bruce Phillips continued his good work infront of goals and Liam McDonnell made the lastquarter his own and finished with four goals . Expectthe likes of David Connell and Matt Armstrong totry and whisk the ball out of the backline and run theball . Tom Wilson has had an outstanding season inthe ruck for Scotch and will be an integral part of theCardinals plans again today . Simon Meehan's shift-ing of Mark Seccull into the ruck late in the gameagainst Collegians showed the Bloods' versatility inthat department in dual guns Hilton and Seccull .Both have had good seasons, too, the latter pollingwell in Monday night's count.

Two weeks ago the Bloods turned a dauntingthree-quarter time deficit not a euphoric victory andthey can only be strengthened by the win and theweek's rest that came with it . Scotch on the otherhand, come off a loss in a physical encounter withXavs on a day when a number of players were downon form. Will they hit their straps today? Tipping hasbecome a veritable nightmare - as I was reminded inno uncertain terms by various club identities onMcnday night - but I can assure punters that I don'thate your club and I certainly don't base my selec-tions on any religious preference! Having said that,Old Haileybury supporters will understand that Isimply cannot board the bandwagon at this late date(I'd hate to ruin a good thing), as much as I think theBloods might just be a good thing today .

Cardinals by 9 points in a thriller .

Tith the weather again superb, the second semi-final saw Old Brighton assert early ascendancy

before allowing MHSOB back into the game . Despitethe frghtback Old Brighton surged late in the thirdquarter to take control again and run away to a 32point victory.

REVIEW

Ladder leaders Old Brighton started well wit hBradley goalling early followed by three goals thatallowed them to dictate terms . Williams in the backpocket was a stumbling block for MHSOB whilstFitzgerald back from a four week holiday stint shutdown many promising MHSOB attacks .

The second quarter was a hard slog by both sideswith the ball being played wide for most of the quarter.MHSOB's big forwards in Johns and Woodley wereinvolved in very keen struggles whilst Pertzel an dHelmot worked hard at ground level to get MHSOBback into the contest. A 27 point lead by Old Brightonearly in the quarter had been reduced to a margin of 12points at half time with MHSOB taking the break withsome confidence and optimism about its' chances inthe second half.

Warren Fa ll revved up his charges for a third quar-ter effort and with Bruce and Cassell on top kickedthree early goals to race to a six point lead at the 15minute mark . Then the Old Brighton engine room ofReid, Perry, Dennis an d Farrel turned the gamearound resulting in 7 goals in 15 minutes to give OBFCa handy break of 38 points at the last change .

Old Brighton took charge early in the last stanzawith a goal from Kent to give it an unassailable lead .Dale Tapping's players appeared to relax a little asMHSOB made one last effort but to no avail .

This was a verypolished performanceby Old Brighton whothoroughly deservedthe victory and the reward of promotion to A Section ir1998.

PREVIEW

All roads lead to Sandringham today for th i

encounter between keen rivals in NHSOB and StKevins . The week's break will have benefited thSKOBS while MHSOB will be keen to take on lasyear's C Section premiers and stop the SKOBS advancto A Section. Both clubs have had superb years but awill be lost if victory does not come today . MHSOIscored well in the last encounter at Righetti Oval an,will rely on its strong ball brigade and powerful key forwards to win the day . SKOBS' height and ability to seup play from defence will worry MHSOB in a matc, that is seen as an even ball game. I am forced to tosthe coin . MHSOB, heads - SKOBS, tails. Up goes thpenny. Tails it is. SKOBS by 8 points .

RESERVES

Last week's cliff hanger saw Ormond lead all daand thoroughly earned its place in next week's GranFinal. SKOBS chased hard all day, did not use the batoo well but were beaten by a better side on the da~Today Old Brighton and St . Kevins do battle. 01Brighton's performance two weeks ago was excellerwhilst SKOBS' effort last week cannot be overlookeiOn the season's form I think SKOBS will win the d<here by 19 points.

ongratirlations to St Bedes Mentone skipperony Macgeorge who on Monday night was

awarded the title of 'C' section Best & Fairest playe rfor season 1997 . Tony amassed a staggering 36 votes tobe eleven clear of his nearest rival, North Old Boy'sLuke Boyle who himself did get enough to win theaward in any other section . It was a big night for Tonyas he was also awarded the trophy for the leading goal-kicker in 'C' Section, finishing the home and awayseason with 101 goals, again a total bettered by no-onein Amateur football this year. But as he said to me, hewould have given it all up if he had of kicked one goallast Saturday, the goal that could have changed theresult of the preliminary final between St BedesMentone and Marcellin at Sandringham.

REVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL :ST BEDES MENTONE V. MARCELLIN

It was a game that was always going to be close . Theresults from their two encounters during the seasonwere split one a piece, and neither was a blowout of anyproportions . The Tigers were backing up from a difficultloss to North Old Boys the week before, Marcellin rest-ed after a weeks break . And it was the boys who had thebreak that were slow out of the blocks . The Tigers keptgoing . Lalor an d Kinsella were firing and they helpedthe Tigers to a 7 goal first quarter, the Eagles hangingin there with 3 of their own . The Eagles then settled intothe second term. The Tigers slowed a bit and letMarcellin back in, the Eagles kicking 4 goals to theTigers one to be level at the long break. The third quar-ter was also the Eagle's, although they didn't have it alltheir own way. They worked hard and were rewardedwith 6 goals, but the Tigers were not to be discounted, and they put on four of their own and in peppering thegoals late added 6 behinds to be just 8 points down atthe final change, but pushing into a breeze. The lastquarter was a dour struggle, but the Eagle's Karavalis, who had kicked crucial goals in Marcellin's win over OldMentonians, was again proving elusive, and he, alongwith the otherwise quiet Treganowan, kicked goals andthe Eagles had gotten out to a 19 point lead with notlong to go . The crowd had gone silent but the Tigerswere not finished . Adam Thompson managed to clearthe ball again and scrambled through a goal and abehind to be just a kick down . With little time to sparethe Tigers pushed forward again, Marcellin scramblingbut unable to stop the push . The Tiger's captain thenmarked a pass just inside 50, but close to the bound-ary, and the siren went . With fans wailing in his earsthe Tigers skipper pushed the kick wide and the Eagleshad progressed to the Grand Final, and 'B' Grade by 6points after an absolutely action packed PreliminaryFinal.

RESERVESPRELIMINARY FINAL:

ST. BEDES MENTONEV. MONASH BLUES

This game a game not so much like the seniors . ThTigers got the early break, but Monash, a proven finalteam got back into the game to be just 1 point down athe long break . But the second half saw the Tigers performs, in patches, in a way that resembled the forrthat saw them unbeaten during the season . Monasltried, but were no match for the Tiger running gamthat saw them link well out of defence and convert uforward . The Tigers took over in the second half, particularly the third term ; an d got the win by 28 point:earning them a re-match with North Old Boys in thiweeks Grand Final.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEWNORTH OLD BO'i'S V. MARCELLIN

Unfortunately for most 'C Section fans, I do ncforesee this as, being too close a contest . Not suggestinthat it will be an entirely one sided affair, but I feel th-~North Old Boys will prove too strong for MarcellirNorth's running game will be well suited to the expan,es of Elsternwick Park, and their ability to kick goalhas been proven throughout the year.

Marcellin are a side that also'rely heavily onbrigade of running players, a lot of their drive cominfrom a very solid defensive line that is able to push thball, and themselves forward to create scoring opporthnities . They gave the Tigers a start last week and weiable to come back, but they cannot afford to do trsame thing against NOB's .

In the wash up, I think North's ability to take overgame through running and being extremely hard at itball will prove too much for Marcellin to handle. Nortto win by up to 30 points. Good luck to both clubs i'B' Section next year.

RESERVES GRAND FINALNORTH OLD BOYS V. ST. BEDES MENTONE TIGER

These two teams faced off two weeks ago, and tlNOB's inflicted the Tigers first loss for the year. It w~a very physical encounter, neither sides wanting to giian inch, but in the end, North were better able to coivert scoring opportunities and got the win. But itTigers managed to turn things around last week arshowed glimpses of form that could win them a flaThey were the yardstick all year . and it is a very haiask ~o go through an entire season undefeated and wa flag. North will be ready to make it a great day for theclub, but the Tigers will arrive and spoil the party .

The Tigers now know how to win and should talthe game, and the flag by around 2 goals .

`D' SECTION GRAND FINAL

Good Luck to all players selected to represent yourClubs in Beauma ris and Old Geelong who have

been promoted to 'C' Section in 1998, and will meetin today's Grand Final . Your clubs are justifiablyproud of your achievements and that you have doneyour job and gained promotion for the Club . Today isthe day for players. To the 42 who will take the fieldtoday to compete for the season's trophy, you haveearned your place in the respective sides . It is the cul-mination of that pre-season training in 40 degreesand the winter nights of 4 degrees . To those injuredor omitted the hard decisions had to be made andwhat is thought to be the best for the team has beendecided. To the two coaches Brett Marchant andMark Neeld congratulations on your efforts and bestwishes for today's result. The Whitefriars club will bebitterly disappointed after all three teams finished theseason third .

REVIEW OF LAST WEEKS PRELIMINARY FINAL .

Rese rve sThe Reserves match played between Whitefri ars

and Parkside was a hard fought game with a veryeven first quarter whilst both sides adapted to theground and conditions. Parkside were first to scorebut by quarter time the two teams were locked togeth-er at 3 .2 each . In the 2nd quarter Parkside attackedrepeatedly and were repelled by the Friars' Johnsonas he played a lone hand across the half back line .Caray playing at centre half back for Parkside thenturned it on and blitzed for the rest of the day as helong bombed into the forward arc where Stuart andDunabin teamed well to kick goals . In the third quar-ter the Devils nearly threw the game away with undis-ciplined late tackles and 25 metre penalties . Theythen settled to have a comfortable lead going into thelast . In the conditions it was obvious fitness wouldplay a big part in the result . The Friars goaled withintwo minutes of the start of the last quarter and withone minute to go were within 3 points but Parksidedug deep into their reserves and managed to hold onfor a hard fought victory .

SeniorsIn the Senior game a very fast game saw neither

side able to get their game plan into action as everyplayer was committed to the task . At the break OGShad wasted many opportunities and only led by 6points . In 7 minutes of playing time OGS kicked 6goals as they went on a rampage . Goals to Wiffen,Edmonds, Howells (2) Darcy and Neeld and itlooked like OGS by how far . The Friars at half timetrailed by 33 points . After the long break the Friarscame out running and kicked the first two goals andduring the quarter clawed their way back to trail by

only 15 pts at the last change. The last quarter wato see OGS finish with 17 men as a reported player iuthe third was off for the rest of the game and it waone of wasted opportunities and went like this . 1611hrs ball bounced, 1614 Howells (OGS) missed seshot, 1615 Ronchi (OGS) missed open goal, 1611Whitefriars forced behind but free kick for throw anset shot missed by OGS. 1617 Howells missed seshot, 1621 Neeld missed set shot, 162 ;Vandenboom (WF) missed set shot . At the 13 minutmark a goal finally broke the drought for OGS anwho then missed two more of the easiest of goal :Whitefriars then kicked the next three until Neel, kicked a team lifting goal which saw the next threkicked by OGS . Whitefrairs got one back and missethe last two shots to finish 4 goals down .

PREVIEWS OF TODAY'S GAMES.

SeniorsOld Geelong now meet Beaumaris again today fc

the fourth time this season . In what will be a verhigh standard and fast game neither side will be ablto afford to give the other a break. In the second-senfinal nothing separated the sides for three quarteruntil OGS went to sleep as Beaumaris turned it on ithe last to run out comfortable winners . The Sha

r will be well aware that OGS will not relax in this the :last chance for glory. OGS last week proved they caplay great team football and if they reproduce that ftfour quarters the Sharks will be hard pressed to stain touch. Beaumaris have had what some term a lu)ury of a weeks rest and most were there watchinOGS last week . This week will be harder than the setond-semi but I think Beaumaris will get up by 2 goalin an extremely close game .

ReservesIn the Reserves Parkside have forced their we

into the Grand Final against Old Geelong aft(accounting for Old Essendon by a point in the FirstFinal and Whitefriars by 3 pts last weekend . They wimeet an Old Geelong unit who easily accounted ftWhitefriars in the second -semi final . Old Geelonshould take this out with injuries and fitness beingproblem for the Devils .

The Season in Revie wPART 2 OF THE 97 REVIEW .

Reviewing the performance of teams in D Sectiecontirues this week .

Old Essendon - just couldn't produce enougconsistent form away from home but did well consoidating in D Section. With their present players an

Reserves depth they should finish in the top halfagain next season. (Rating 80% )

Parkside - Finished off the season on top of theworld after winning five from five to grab fourth spot .Fitness is their only problem and a little too muchreliance on six senior players to perform consistentlyeach week . Senior players need to be more committedto the task and although just missed winning thefirst-semi final would have struggled in better condi-tions to get closer to the top three . With two of thesesides gone for next season if they can lift fitness andrecruit as well as this season will be a force next yearand will finish in the final five . (Rating 84%)

Whitefri ars - Should finish top next season .Plenty of depth Seniors, Reserves and Under 19's alljust missing a grand final berth . They will shake offthis years disappointment and will be the measuringstick next year. (Rating 90% )

Old Geelong an d Beaumaris meet today and willplay C Section football next year - deservedly as bothproduced the goods this season . Beaumaris who Ipredict will win earn 99% rating whilst OGS receive97% .

To the scribes and personalities at each club thathave made me welcome and with whom I haveenjoyed a quiet beer - well done and thanks for yourassistance . To the respective Presidents, PeterClarke ( Old Geelong) and Ron Nicholson(Beaumaris) and the Committee's of each competingclub good luck today and well done . All the best in CSection next season .

E EAST SECTIONby Barry Hickey

E East in its brief history has been a top notch com-petition, and has produced three first class pre-

miers, St Leo's Emmaus Wattle Park, Aquinas andnow Yarra Va lley Old Boys. Many club bonds and per-sonal friendships have been forged in that time, whichwill, hopefully, endure much longer than the Sectionitself. Whatever the future holds though, as the clubsare regrouped for 1998, none of us who were in it, willever forget our days as E Easteners .

Congratulations to Nick Vasilopoulos of Old Careyon winning the Section B & F. Nick's ability, dedicationand loyalty are legendary in his club and this accoladecaps of an excellent year for him personally .

A very special thanks to our Editor, Ph il Stevens, and his hardworking unit at HQ, Sue Anderson, BrettConne ll and Angela Giles, and the ubiquitous PeterHarris, all of whom have made this scribe's duties anabsolute pleasure .

Our thanks to Richard Evans, Tom Johnston an dIan Munro our VAFA officials for this year's finalsseries . They were helpful as always, and calm . evenwhen confronted with three different starting times forGrand Finals! Again, special plaudits to JohnMontgome ry of Old Scotch and his team, in particu-lar Roz Speed and her kiosk crew, who all helped tomake our last Grand Final such a memorable one .SENIOR GRAND FINAL

Yarra Valley Old Boys triumphed over a gallantKew after a truly great match in near perfect condi-tions at Camberwell. The Bush Rangers have been aforce since their entry into the VAFA in 1993 becauseof the sheer weight of talent theY put on the field eachweek . Finalists in every year of E East competition . ittook two top sides in St Leo's and Aquinas to denyYarra in 95 & 96, but the 1997 season they have madetheir own . Coached superbly by David Kyle, and witha capable administration lead by Haydn Park and RodPenaluna, the Bush Rangers will be worthy D Sectioncontenders . Kew were magnificent in defeat, and a gen-uine credit to coach, Robert Bayley. and And rewBarnes an d his committee .

Kicking to the scoreboard, and traditionally, scor-ing end . Kew were in a spot of bother when they foundit hard to penetrate the hard running Yarra back lines .Kew lead by only 5 points at the 17 minute mark, andwere definite trouble in the last ten minutes, whenMcLeod and MeVean goaled to give Yarra an 8 pointlead at the change . Michael White, Brad Peake,Michael Fung an d Fraser MeVean were all lookingominous, with Ang Gencarelli and Ric Pulverentiboth strong for Kew .

Peterson kicked a great goal from the boundaryearly in the second quarter . but then Kew rattled on 3by Dimasi ( 2), and King (I). in 3 minutes to hit thefront . The next 25 minutes saw 11 goals scored, 8 tothe Bush Rangers . and 3 to Kew, with the ball racing

from one end of theground to the other i na super display of play Ion football . McLeod,Thompson, Laing and Downs were all prominent fa,Yarra, while Harrison, Cullen and Jamie Be ll wenlikewise for Kew. The Bush Rangers were 29 points uIat the long break and looking confident . Kew's Chow 8Cable Hope were effective in defensive roles.

A burst of goals to Porte, King and McMahon irthe opening 3 minutes of the 3rd saw Kew back in contention . The pace was tremendous, and the skill worthy of a much higher section . A magnificent goal on thirun from an acute angle by McVean steadied Yarraand he followed with another after marking 2 minute, later. Then Bria, . Harrison and Dimasi whacke(through 3 in as many minutes and the spectators' anxiety levels went off the chart again . Two more steadierfrom White and McVean, put Yarra back in the comfort zone, but Porte dobbed one from the square aftesensational mark just before the siren, cutting Kew ;deficit to 16 points at the last change . Yarra had prominent players in Koenen, and Drew . For Kew, Brunand McMahon were giving plenty of drive, and Mart,Chapman was curbing the dangerous McLeod .

Four minutes into the last, Kew were two pointup, followed great goals to Pulverenti, Lafranchi, amPo rt e . Once more though, the irrepressible MeVeaagoaled brilliantly on the run from 40 metres out, a

nthe Bush Rangers moved into overdrive. For the nex20 minutes Yarra absolutely dominated, scoring 6.6 t0 .0, with Peake, MeVean, Downs and Scales runninriot . A solitary response from that rocklike defendelJamie Bell , was all that Kew could muster, and 2 minutes later, at 5.10pm, E East Section, as we havknown it, came to an end. Superimposed over the joyof victory, and the tears of defeat, was the overridinaura of a great competition being brought to a fittinclose, by a match of epic proportions .

In truth, the mane of the match is a plurality . th42 players who participated . Nothing more could havbeen asked of any of them. But using scribe's licencFI'd like to salute Fraser MeVean of Yarra, whose seemingly effortless movement and abundance of skill :b ; ought such pleasure of E East patrons over the pa ;three years, culminating in his stellar contribution this Grand Final.RESERVE GRAND FINAL

Old Carey salvaged something from the year bunexpectedly downing the red hot favourites . YarrValley, surviving a late onslaught from the BusRangers, who had been hitherto stunned by the reeoluteness of the C's defence . The scores at half timfshowing the C's 7 .4 to 0 .3 . had even the Carey camgasping in disbelief. Many people had forgotten thethis game featured the Section's best Ressies attaci

Yarra, versus its best defence, and on the day, thedefenders won in a very entertaining and high stan-dard game . The Bush Rangers rattled home whenO'Sullivan an d Telford broke loose, but the C's hadenough margin to weather the 4th term revival . Potterat CHB was outstanding for Yarra, receiving terrificsupport from Ross, C rean, Lawton, Gentle an d Rowe.Chris Soccio, with his 50m dashes and 60m kicks wassuperb for the C's, Matt Curry was mercurial on hiswing, Ian Cohen was unflagging all day ruck roving,Mal Kennedy had a great day in defence, Matt Jonescontrolled the ruck duels, and the evergreen JamesMcQuie, capped off a wonderful year with another finedisplay. A highly commendable team effort from theC's.

fabulous day for football and a fabulous gamea with the cliche'd but undeniable reality being

that neither side deserved to lose .

Both sides went into the game with addedmotivation, Uni Blacks keen to erase the memoryof their '96 fade out and North Brunswick intenton making amends for their '95 Grand Final lossat the hands of Uni Reds . The game opened at afrenetic pace as Black's runners set out to takeadvantage of the expansive Preston CommunityOval and bypass North's strength that lay downthe spine . The Northerners found it difficult toclose down the spaces their opponents were creat-ing and the loss of skipper Dean DeMorton formuch of the quarter after a clash in the openingminutes was a low blow . A nervous start from bothsides produced some inaccurate disposal withBlacks taking the early initiative before Northeventually settled to finish out the quarter strong-ly and go into the break 11 points down .

Blacks started the second with early goals andlooked a chance to run away with the half beforethe momentum shifted . Midway through the termTirchett marked from behind and goaled to givehis side renewed hope and when Lynch played onand missed from twenty five metres the underdogsdug deep and took their chance . Two quick goalsto @Paites and the ungainly "Plugger" Wernhamreduced the margin to a kick before "Wizard"Warren snared the ball from a boundary throw into boot the goal of the day and make it 3 in fiveminutes . Another major from Ellis put North twokicks clear and only a freak snap by Gullan late inthe term allowed Blacks to be within 2 points atthe main break .

At the half Garry Connolly had plenty to thinkabout with Joe Boudoloh proving a headache inthe ruck and his defenders finding themselvesworking overtime for the first time in more than amonth . In the visitors sheds Craig Fox had seenhis charges storm home against Williamstown theweek before and knew he was in with a big chanceif only North could hold the students in the thirdas they kicked to what had been the scoring endall day.

Blacks came out on fire but had to work hardfor a lucky first goal . Poor kicking looked set toprove costly before Ben Henderson markedstrongly and kicked truly from fifty out to providea buffer . Just as Blacks looked set to break thegame wide open, the hard working John "Kanga"Kennedy goaled against the flow of play to justifyhis inclusion in the North side. When Thorpe

goaled from fortyNorth had comefrom nowhere to trailby just 2 points at "the final change .

As he had done a week earlier, Coach Foxcalled on Adrian Tirchett to lift and take advan-tage of the seeds of doubt he felt his side hadplanted in the minds of their more fancied oppo-nents, while Connolly used his three quarter timeaddress to settle his boys and insist they use theirgreater speed to advantage .

The final term was a desperate arm wrestle. After eight minutes North had managed only 2points but that was enough to level scores as thetension built on and off the field . As the clockticked passed 10 minutes Roberts took a scream-er twenty five metres out for Blacks but missed .Henderson marked the kick in and passed toLynch who also missed . Just as Blacks looked setto kick themselves out of the game a snap from athrow in stretched their lead beyond a kick . Aquick reply from Tirchett who marked strongly onforty meters had everyone on the edge of theirseats (even though most of the crowd were stand-ing) and when he marked in a similar position justfour minutes later Blacks looked to be in deeFtrouble . The long kick missed and the scores wereagain tied . As the quarter stretched on play ebbedand flowed between the two half forward lines asboth sides fought desperately to break the dead•lock . The game ticked into time on and Hendersonmarked on the point post for Blacks but theunsighted umpire refused to make a guess a

n rightly called play on. The resulting throw in fell t cRob Mackie who handballed through for the pointthat broke the deadlock and gave an exhaustedBlacks the game and their first Flag since 1974 .

ReservesEarlier Blacks made it a six pack of ressies pre•

mierships with Souerby strong in the ruck andBrown, Dooley Sc Jessen damaging around thepacks . Underdogs Uni Reds had worked hard irthe first half and developed some momentum intcthe main break to be a real chance . But after .tight start, Blacks ran away with the second haland were even able to bring on Nick Carah as the}over ran the Reds across every line except the forwards where the trio of Evans, Senberg ancAtkins were superb in the last lin e

Congratulations to the Premiers . to Best an Fairest winner Aaron Thege from Vdilliamstow r

and Sharpshooter David Wallace of Uni High . Althe best for season '98 .

DO lLE GLORY : BA.i~t'EES

T ast Saturday dispelled any doubts that th eSouthbank Football Club was truly'Premiers'

and 'Champions' of Section E South for 1997 . As aclub, to win 40 of 41 games was a magnificent per-formance of endurance, strength and great resolveand indicative of the depth within the ranks of theclub. Accolades are many and it is difficult to find astart point, however without 'Punch' there's noshow, hence the players are to be congratulatedalong with the many, many helpers around the clubwho get little if any praise throughout the season .To the Match Committee and general committeeof the club the 'Flag(s)' are just rewards for hardyakka and for never losing sight of their vision andgoals.

Commiserations are extended to the St PatricksMentone Football Club as the vanquished . Theirperformance throughout 1997 was extremely com-mendable. As much as the Bankers were dominant,so too were the Vultures over the remainder of thecompetition. They too as a club are focussed on suc-cess and conduct the operations of the club and allfacets with it, in a most professional manner. The StPat's club is most definitely headed in the rightdirection.

REVIEW OF GRAND FINAL

SENIORSOn what could only be described as a perfect

day for footy the stage was set for a classicencounter . As had been mentioned previously byboth Tom and myself, the Bankers needed to bewary of any early on-slaught by the Patters . Well .the reverse was true, although Southbank took a lit-tle while to settle . their 5 goal to 1 quarter justabout had the game beyond St Pat's reach .

The second quarter was uncompromising footyresembling at times an arm wrestle with each sidetrying to gain the ascendancy . The ball was freeflowing between the respective half-forward zoneswith goals at a premium cost. Recognised gun play-ers from each team were being quelled by fair andlegitimate tagging roles and the coaches of both out-fits reacted by switching these players around in anattempt to get them into the action of things .

The penultimate stanza was the clincher forSouthbank . The move of Big Bad Roy to the goalsquare freeing up ace forward Craig Perry to roamfree was the catalyst for the Bankers attackingspree . Spilled marks early in the game were notbeing clutched and converted with comparativeease and an absolute 'pearler' goal by Justin

Nugent took the wind out of the Patters sails . Thecentre square contests were now favouringSouthbank and the scoring opportunitiesincreased . On the other hand, St Pat's when theydid go forward were frustrated by an extremely tightdefence. Again, like the second quarter, the 5 min-utes belonged to St Pat's and they rallied with thelast 2 goals, however they still faced the dauntingtask of kicking 7 majors to head the Bankers .

In the last, when most on-lookers thought thePatters might fall away they fooled everyone andplayed some of their best football of the day. Bykicking the 1st couple, the heat to a degree wasturned up on Southbank. The Bankers steadiedand answered each and every goal from thereon andif not for one of the funniest goal mouth incidentswitnessed for sometime (Tony - see, I've got it, nowI haven't - Rolls) they in fact would have squaredthe ledger. As it was, the Patters outscoredSouthbank by a goal but still and all, fell short ofthe mark by 34 points .

SUMMARY OF E SOUTH CLUBS PERFOR-MANCES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS .

Southbank and St Pats - Enough said, both upto D and will acquit themselves well .

Peninsula - Bowed in finals again, but in verygood hands and will prosper in '98 .

Power House - Specific off season recruitingand a good pre-season will see them high again in'98 .

Oakleigh - Good end to season and with rea-sonable depth will be thereabouts next year .

Glenhuntly - Consolidated well enough and i1they top-up their stocks will test the best next sea-son .

St Mary's - Disappointing end to the season .Must build up depth within to trouble the t

o teams.Elsternwick - Mid year strife no help . Too mu

c left to too few. 'F' a help, but need to recruit heavi-ly .

Monash Gryphons - Better than finish positiorindicates . Will give 'F' a bit of 'curry'.

ANZ Albert Park - Copped it for a fair whilenow. Will need to dip deep even in 'F' but good luck

PROMOTIONSCongratulations to the following clubs who have

been successful in obtaining promotion for 1998 : OldBrighton (A), North Old Boys and Marcellin (B),Beaumaris and Old Geelong (C), Yarra Valley,University Blacks and Southbank (D) . Either MHSOBor St Kevins will join Old Brighton in A Section afterthis weekend . Good luck to both clubs .

APPOINTMENTSCongratulations to all Field, Boundary and Goal

Umpires who were appointed to Grand Finals lastweekend. Umpires' Corner is sure you did the VAFAUAproud. Good luck to others still to do their 'GF' overthese next two weekends.

Special mention to fellow columnist, Leah 'Spider'Gallagher, on doing both the E Reserves Grand Finaland your 200th game last weekend. The spies tell meyou did us proud, umpiring with 'Gorgeous' GeorgeGioras who heads off overseas shortly. Well doneSpider.

BIG DAY AT MORDIALLOCAt the same ground, umpire's friend from

Southbank Neil 'Bubba' Wallmeyer had a big daycoaching the Magoo's to the flag, then playing for theones in their premiership team. Well done 'Bubba.Apparently many Grand Final umpires were seen latein the Yarra Park vicinity enjoying the VAFA sponsor'sproduct .

The same Grand Final at Mordialloc saw somethingunusual . In the Ressies, Spider and George bouncedall game on the hard surface but something must havehappened between games because Jerker an d Daggleshad to throw the ball up in the seniors . Must have beena very local shower out south during the afternoon.

Umpires . like the players can be either happy ordisappointed by their respective selections, particular-ly at this time of the year. However the umpires outRiddell way obviously got more wound up than most .Apparently the previous Umpires' Advisor was'bailed up' by a very unhappy field umpire who hadmissed out on the 'big one' and a new game called'chair throwing was started on the same night . MakesKenny Walker's audible seem docile doesn't it Lippy?

LAW OF THE WEEK (6 .6 Kick after siren) .Umpires' Corner would especially like to include

this law due to personal involvement in recent times . Itdoesn't happen often but when it does, like the goodscout, be prepared.

6.6 .1 In the event that two or more field umpiresare officiating, the ball shall be deemed dead when oneof the field umpires hears the first sound of the siren .That field umpire shall be the sole judge of whether theball has been kicked or handled or whether a free kickhas been awarded prior to the first sound of the siren .

6 .6 .2 If the ball is touched in transit the fieldumpire must be satisfied that the score was not assist-ed by another player, but if the ball touches any play-er below the knee it shall become dead and no scorerecorded .

The Grand Finals are upon usReview - Pre liminary FinalsSection 1

FFNie weather and the ground condition at Ted Ajaniwas immaculate as the Old Xaverians took on Ol d

Paradians for the right to challenge Uni . Blues in theSection 1 Grand Final of 1997. In an even first quarterboth side's defences held sway and the OP's held aslender (11) point advantage . The Xavs really turnedup the heat in the second booting (7) goals while hold-ing the OP's scoreless . The match looked like headingtowards a big win for the Xavs, but the OP's had otherideas . With Ciavola and Gale up forward finding themark and Talarico, Stevens, Villanti and Green hold-ing sway the OP's booted an amazing (13) second halfgoals to (7) to crush any thoughts the Xavs may havehad of defending their Section 1 title. The Xavs werebest served by Fleming, Webb and Healy, with Jones,Di llon an d Deane-Johns outstanding workers all day .From all accounts a fantastic game of football and ashame that there had to be a loser.

Section 2Whitefriars were jumped early by a fired up Old

Scotch team who led by the healthy margin of (20)points at quarter time . No rt hey an d Winterburn wereprominent for the Friars, as to were Gross and Love forthe Scotchies . The Friars hit back in the second termthrough the assistan ce of Phan, Reid an d Murray, butthe Scotchies were equal to the task with Crow, Craneand Davis leading from the front. The goalless thirdterm by the Friars put them well behind the eight balland despite the efforts of Johnson, they struggled tocontain a rampant Old Scotch brilliantly led byJunkeer. In the final analysis it was the better (4)quarter performance by the Scotchies that saw themadvance to the Grand Final against Collegians today.

Section (2) BlueOrmond had to battle very hard all day to wear

down a determined AJAX outfit . The Jackas openedthe better and attacked the football with much aggres-sion and determination . A feature of their play was thefield kicking and teamwork, and with Bock, Dukesand Snow leading the way early the Jackas looked infor an upset . Leading by (23) points at half time withGolvin and Czarny causing problems up forward theJackas had every right to feel confident, however theMonds would not lay down and through the efforts ofWonnacott, Dale and Gleeson kept in touch through-out the third when the Jackas threatened to go awaywith the game. Having narrowed the deficit down to (8)points at the final change the Monds gathered

resources and camehome like a train, hadthey kicked straightthe match could wellhave been sealed a lot earlier, but the efforts ofNaughton, Thompson, Robbins and Black instru-mental in the wash-up . For the valiant Jackas Segal,Weinstock and Blashki were excellent (4) quarter per-formers .

Section (2) RedSt. Leos Emmaus contiued their giant killing form

when they soundly defeated Yarra Valley last weekend.A fast and furious first quarter saw the Two Blues slamon (6) majors to (1) to hold all the aces at quarter timewith Gashen, Hodder and Willis doing as theypleased . Thompson and S . Lloyd were prominent forthe Valley but were battling against the odds early on,with the trend set to continue . The Valley were destinedto play catch-up football for the remainder of the daywith the Two Blues adding to their lead at every changeduring the match . For the Valley none tried harderth an Coleman, A. Laing, B . Reynolds and T.Wapshot, while the Two Blues were best served byThomas, Devlin and Manton . Yan•a Valley will be leftto lament on what could have been, but have proved inonly their second year of U19 football that they have asound basis for the years ahead .

Previews - Grand FinalsSection 1

Uni. Blues enter today's Section i Grand Finalwith the knowledge that they have defeated OldParadians on both occasions this year. The first timeby the slender margin of (3) points, while the secondtime around the OP's were comfortably defeated. TheOP's have come through from fourth position and havekey players in Talarico, Ventura, Ciavola an d Stevensto be wary of. Add to this Cosgriff, Lynch, Port eous,Vecchio and Joyce and the Blues will definitely havetheir hands full . The Blues on the other hand havetheir own match winners in Roydhouse, Kordick,Sturrock and Fricker, added to this list are primemovers in Eastaugh, Cobbledick, Kelly, Christie an dCamm and this match will be well worth viewing . Bothteams have solid defences and attacking mid-fielders,with enough firepower up forward to boot a winningscore . The close tough game last week may well take itstoll on the OP's and this is my reasoning in leaningtowards Uni . Blues to win a tight match.Selection: Uni . Blues

Scotch stands at (1) win apiece and with the teamshaving not met in the finals to date today's matchshould be beauty. Both sides can kick big scores ontheir day, and although both have desperate defencesthe Lions' would appear to be better overall . TheScotchies will rely heavily on Hawkins, Beattie, Grossand Crane . with handy back-ups in Junketer, Crow,Prendergast and Love. While the Lions have beensolid all year with the likes of Baxter, Van Der Venne,Byrne and Florentine consistently prominent. Add tothis talented group Champion, Byrne, Moon an dMoll ard and the equation is a rather exciting affair .With (1) win each and not much more than good formfrom both over the finals this match will no doubt beclose. My leaning is with the Lions given the week off, however the Scotchies have hit form at the businessend and will obviously keen to prove this predictionwrong. All the best to the two teams today .Selection: Collegians

Section ( 2) BlueOrmond face a rested and ready-to-go St . Bedes

Mentone Tigers for the fourth time in 1997, and stillare yet to break the ice . Key players in Ryan andKingwell will need to be watched by the Moods, as towill Wintle, Gangi, Falkingham, Kidd and McShane. The Monds will need to start well and maintain maxi-mum pressure on the Tigers whose skill and precisionteam work make them firm premiership favourites .While the Moods have gained a berth in the GrandFinal, they have done it he hard way with key contrib-utors being Ashford, Naughton, Cu llen, Robbins an dGale. For the Monds to win today Black and Brown willneed to be prominent as to will Byron, Gleeson,Pasara and Wonnacott. The Tigers goalkicking powermay trouble the Moods however I expect a closermatch than last time the two teams met . With theTigers holding the edge in all encounters to date theMoods have nothing to lose, and given fine conditionsthe match will be a tough and uncompromisingencounter from go to whoa . The Tigers deserve to startfavourites, although no favourite is a sure thing.Selection: Ormon d

Section (2) Re dSt . Leos Emmaus WP have emerged as the only

remaining threat to Old Trinity's flag dream. The lasttime the two teams met it was the Two Blues comfort-ably, and back in Round 1 the OTs walloped the TwoBlues easily. So at best the most recent match pointsto a strong turnaround by the Two Blues, and with thelikes of Devlin, Willis, Mo re l, Thomas an d McGloinfinding form at the right end of the season signs areominous. However the OT's must and will startfavourites with Gre ig, Newman, Arrowsmith an dJones all quality players capable of match winningperformances if left unchecked . Add to this talentedgroup Ramsden, Kennedy and Andrews and the bal-ance definitely swings towards the OT's. Overall theOT's have a better defence, with both teams fairly evenin terms of forwards and onballers . The match willcome down to whichever team settles first and I lean

® THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1997

towards the OT's being the better prepared fooccasion today .Selection: Old Trinity

All the very best to all (8) teams playing todaymay the best teams on the day win, and I trust thalsome fine football is produced in the process. Goocluck to all concerned.

Those who have achieved for most from Financial Planning are those who have imple-mented a plan . This is your opportunity to do the same . As a Member of COUNT, we

offer you an initial interview Free .

COACHES'CLIPE'AFCA/VAFA

0 ne of the most challenging aspects of coaching anamateur football club is the development of the

future of the club . In football clubs where the partici-pants are involved for many reasons, a coach and theclub committee are responsible for creating an environ-ment where the future of the club can be guaranteed .There are two major are as that a coach/club can usein order to guarantee its future. In simple terms thesemay be listed as: 1) player recruitment and on-field suc-cess, and 2) player development .

If we look at each of these aspects we may see thatthey have characteristics that could "make or break" aclub .

1) Player recruitment and on-field success

This is certainly an immensely important aspect ofany coaches position . Coaches are expected to recruitsenior players that will have an immediate effect on theon-field performance of the team. The recruitment ofquality people is just as important as the recruitment ofgood footballers. We all know of examples where clubshave recruited heavily, achieved some short term suc-cess only to find that the "recruits" moved on to anoth-er club the following year and leave the club "high anddry" . In the main clubs need to recruit good footballerswho will also become good, loyal clubmen . Amateurfootball , in that regard, is probably the last bastionof club loyalty that exists in today's dollar drivensociety.

2) Player developmen tThis can take on many forms including skill devel-

opment, social development and leadership devel-opment . Skill development requires no explanation.however social and leadership development of playersare also integral aspect of a coaches role . Many coach-es will tell you that they are often the players' confi-dantes, mothers, fathers . psychologists and nearly anyprofession that deals with the mind! In that respect, coaches often have a large impact on some of their play-ers' social development and it is responsibility that isnot taken lightly. Leadership development can be aneglected component of a coaches/clubs' plan .However, following a few simple principles can over-come any oversights .

As a coach you could make recommendations toyour committee regarding young players (or those play-ers with leadership qualities) to go to a Level 1 CoachesCourse . This will benefit both the coach and the club inmany ways. Firstly. the coach will have more people

around him who understand what he is trying to do.The coach can confidently break up training by utilis-ing one of these players to run a drill or even a wholesession (It's amazing how some people respond toresponsibility) . This can also ensure that players don'tget sick of hearing the coaches' voice.

A coach may also select one or a group of players tobe responsible for warm-ups and cool downsthroughout the whole year . The fact that they will havecompleted a coaching course will enable the coach to beconfident in their ability to do this task properly . Theplayers themselves will learn invaluable skills such aspublic speaking and group control which may come inhandy in other aspects of their lives .

Involving players in key leadership roles at trainingwill also develop a sense of ownership of training ses-sions and game plans etc . As a senior coach I am firstto admit that I don't know everything about football, and it is amazing what valuable suggestions can comefrom your players if you create an environment where-by they are encouraged to bring forward their ideas .

The benefits of sending players to Level 1 CoachesCourses are magnified if your club has limitedresources, particularly those working in an off-fieldcapacity. Players who complete a coaches course willensure that the club will have "home grown" talent forfuture coaching positions, particularly the Reserves/Assistant coach position which is often difficult to fill inthe lower grades. This can be an important elementwith respect to the new coach knowing the pysche of anamateur football club . Also, clubs will have "money inthe bank" should outside influences cause a coach tohave to leave the club .

By providing players with coaching experiences, players who may have only slightly held an intention tocoach in the future may find that it is much more suit-ed to them than they thought . As a playing coach I canassure you that I have learnt more about playingthrough being a coach than I ever thought possible .

Even if your players don't go on to become coaches, you may find that exposure to a Level 1 Coaches Coursecould improve their on-field performance . In short I canonly encourage coaches to recommend to your commit-tee that some of your players be sent to a Level 1 CoachesCourse . The cost is minimal compared to the invest-ment that your club will be making for it's future !
