benefits of being actively involved in a eJ, :also give young people an opportuniiy to ronly enhance their football prowess but alsobenefit their own personal lives .

Whilst I congratulate this weekend's GrandFinalists and the clubs who have already wonGrand Finals or have been promoted to a highersection, I would like to reiterate iny messageconveyed on Presentation Night .

That is, whilst we applaud success of individualsand clubs, the success of the VAFA is not to befound in individual performance . It lies with 73clubs, 211 teams, 6000 plus players, 130 or soumpires and the many thousands of volunteerswho give some much of their time literally "ForThe Love Of The Game . "

is your President, I have great pride in ourAssociation and I am proud of everyoneassociated with it .

The contribution you all make is legion and isrecognized by myself and my ExecutiveCommittee, if not sadly, at the highest level offootball-the AFL.

te ur "a+ is the heart and soul of_ustralian Rules football .

I'is played for all the right reasons. It is not

ompromised or tainted by conunercialism or7e power of the dollar and our ideals and

traditions, existent for 112 years, reflect theaspirations of the game's founding fathers .

cpounding those sentiments hw-:ever, i tiould not be forgotten tl!it f, re wre 1<sues

the p h ; : : s of ton

In stating this he, r, if the problems thatbeset our game are to be addressed, there mustfirst be some acknowledgement and recognitionby the AFL that the problems endemic in juniorfootball, such as lack of umpires actually doexist .

Whatever action the AFL decides to take it mustbe taken sooner rather than later. Later will betoo late .

Once the filial siren has sounded on Sunday, itwill be a signal for us to commence preparing forthe 2003 season .

Already we are addressing the issue of tunpiringand we will be adopting measures to ensure thatumpiring numbers for 2003 are improved andthat a career in umpiring is promoted as a anadjunct to one's personal development .I wish our competing clubs this weekend goodluck and I sincerely thank everyone associatedwith the VAFA for your contribution this year.

ST BERNARDS and OLD XAVE S meet today for

the second time in an A Section Grand Final in thre e

seasons .

On that occ asion Xavs were looking to equal the VAFA

record of six A-grade grand finals in a row and theBernies were chasing their first flag in this grade since1975 .Today Xavs are trying to create another piece of historyby becoming the only club to win seven A Sectionpremierships in eight years and the Bernies their firstflag in this grade in 27 years to add to their 1991 and1984 B Section premierships .

Xavs six-behind loss to the Bernies in the second-semifinal was their fourth final loss from 16 starts sincetheir run of six flags in a row started in 1995 .

Last Sunday's 33-point victory over Scotch took that to17 finals .OX's dominance has accounted for all teams except lastyear's premiers Marcellin, in A Section since that time .

Perseverance and a positive attitude has given theDoggies another crack at the title.

After going out of the 1998 and 2001 finals series instraight sets, and losing the 2000 Grand Final to Xavs,a lesser club would have faded.

Not so the men from West Essendon who are a beaconof strength for the VAFA in Melbourne's north .

This year their experienced line up of Nick Mitchell andcousin Chris, Ben Jordan, Ben Hogan, Damien

McLaughlin, Anthony Thomas, Luke Turnbull, BenLoughlin, Luke O'Sullivan, Cameron Trewin, NickSmith, Joe Mount and Tim Harvey - most of whom have

come into the seniors over the past few seasons - havebeen complimented with the introduction of the bestfull-forward in the competition Dan Jordan, the

maturing of ruckman Liam Wilkinson, wingman Lucas

Fielding. half-back David James, forward-pocket roverSean Neeson, flanker Simon Clarke (the last four played

for the state Under-19 team this year), and flanker

Brian Ashton .

The average age for the team has been in the low 20s .

Also new to the club is dual-VFL premiership coachPeter Nicholson .The former Springvale coach introduced a third night oftraining - rare in A grade - and Nicholson encouragedhis young players to get outside their comfort zones .

The technique worked delivering the minorpremiership . by two-and-a-half wins, but moreimportantly a six-behind win over Xavs in the second-

semi .

Xavs were down by 50points in the lastquarter but kickingwith the wind in the last quarter came to ivithin fivepoints at the start of time-on .

To remain in control in this environment is testamentto the Nicholson philosophy .

The OX team today is looking better than the second-semi team.

Captain Nick Mitchell, who has been a key to theBernies push to be a force in A grade, said his club'sfinals record means nothing as this is a different teamand Nicholson said he "wasn't interested in history" andthat they had a full squad from which to choose .

Last week Xavs brought back one of its Fab-Four whchave played in all six flags, wing-specialist John Bowen,

Bowen, an excellent overhead mark, has been nursui€a hamstring during the latter half of the season and iiwould seem he is not up to chasing Fielding who wa ;the best in the second-semi .

The other three members of the Fab-Four, Dar

Richardson - six brilliant goals, Michael Blood -another impressive rucking job, and Andrew Dillon -smart across half-back, are all in form in lat

September. Will this be their swan song?

Chris Ellis, a key defender, also came back last wee]and he should take Dan Jordan who kicked seven goalin the second-semi and dispensed with Damian Stone.

and David Landrigan .

Former Collingwood utility Alex McDonald's dicky legand back flared up and he was replaced by JanieScanlon .Travis Ruyg, one of the best midfielders in thcompetition in his first season after playing in the VFIran water last week and said his twisted ankle inct .irrein the last home-and-away game, was "getting bett(each time we kick a goal" .

The key should be Ruyg complimenting Tim Ockleslia, and Simon Wood.

Xavs followed the example of Old Haileybury in the Egrade preliminary last Saturday, and went straight 1Elwood beach to do a recovery session inunediate :

after the preliminary final .

Xavs endured 28-degree heat and the game was play(in a strong wind .The Bernies have won the past two of their tlrn

Two years ago this column went with St Bernards. Forour tip this year we want to wait imtil the weatherforecast at the end of the week so you'll have to listen to96 .5 Inner FM at 9am on Saturday, and for those whodon't get this publication on Thursdays, then today(Sunday) at 2pm 88 .3 Southern FM well be part of thelive ball-by-ball broadcast team and we'll give it againthen.

A dry and still day will suit the younger Bernies, whereas wet and windy conditions will bring the ball tothe ground where Xavs' physical strength could betelling.

• LAST Sunday was Tim O'Shaughnessy's 100th ascoach of OX and he's won 75 and drawn one .

• FOR novices, this year VAFA umpires have beenthrowing the ball up except for centre bounces due toinjury issues .

• TACH section's scribe has been asked to name hisTEP_PJt OF THE YEAR for that section and here is ourA Section team:

The 2003 promotion to A Section issue has nowbeen sorted, so lets get on with the real reasonwhy we're here: premierships. Bring it on. . .

The Preliminary Final at Sandringham, was a closegame for a half, but then Old Fialieybury suddenlydecided that that was enough and away they went, and spanked NOBs to the tune of 56 pts .In the first qtr, OH kicked with the breeze. NOBswere hoping to contain their opponents to areasonable scoreline to set up a big second qtr, andeven though OH opened up a handy 20 pt lead andthe end of the term, it was certainly notinsurmountable . Lay (OH) and Collison (NOBs) wereplaying well for their respective teams .The second stanza was almost a mirror image of thefirst however, it was a do-or-die period for NOBs, asthey couldn't afford to give OH a big start at themain break . Goals to Mason and Lay just before halftime gave OH a 6 pt lead, and took a lot of the windout of NOB 's saits.

As mentioned last week, the third qtr is called thepremiership quarter, and it was OH who was able tomake the most of their turn with the breeze, andraced right away. NOBs had their pants pulled downin a big way, when OH piled on 8 goals to ni1, asJenke, Bourke and the big man O'Farrell went apedroppings snuffing out any hope that NOBs had ofstaying in the game. The margin at the last changewas 52 pts, and that fat bird was called in - it wasall over once she cleared her throat and bellowed .The last qtr was another big one for OR as theycontinued to press home the advantage in thegeneral run of play, but couldn't manage to gain therewards of their labours and boot goals . NOBs werebattling hard but their race had been run and werewanting the final siren to ring so they could enjoy acold beer and start planning for 2003.Good players for OH were aplenty' and they weresuperbly led by Bourke, Brooks and Armstrong toname a few. For NOBs, Collison, Eastaugh and 'TheColonel' (Sanders) tried valiantly all day, butunfortunately couldn't early the day for their team.

Old Paradiansgave the punters from the north cast

something to cheer about when they got over thelineagainst Old Haileybury by 13 pts, and get another

crack at OMs. OP won the toss and kicked against

the wind but it proved to be a wise move. A 9 goal

second qtr from OP blew the contest to theschizenhausen, with loose checking by OH going along way to helping the green and purple's cause .rn

OIi fought back toake it I pt th e

difference at the mainchange, but with thebreeze at their backsfor the last qtr, it wasn't going to be enough to holdoff the rampaging OPs

. 1va,)Qnan, Moyle and Laddwere good players for OH. Once again, didn't hearfrom anyone from Bundoora, so I must be on thenose! I

Old o~ -ni rnians (114) vs Old Haileybury (3/1)Well, here it is, after I8 rounds and 3 weeks of fuia}s ,we're down to these two .

The residents of the BowIing Green have been thepacesetters of fhe competition from virtually theseason's beginning. Erwin Leyden and ]its coachingcrew went about recruiting players that could makeup the difference they were behind from 2001, andtake them one step further. With the 2001 liststaying almost intact, in addition to the newrecruits, one could say that the objective has beenachieved. The 3 aims of an amateur club are finals, promotion and premiership (in that order), and ON-ishave got 2 out of 3 so far . A win today would be thethird of three objectives and icing on the cake inwhat has been a successful year. It's also been a successful journey for Mick Dwyerand his gang. They spent a lot of the year perched inthe bottom half of the four, but some big victoriesagainst key opponents when it counted elevatedthem to the double chance, and their win last weekindicated that finishing second was no fluke .Although they were pummeled into submission 2weeks ago by OMs, OH were able to recover very wel l(much like Adelaide), giving them a large dose ofconfidence going into today. It is no surprise as to who the selection will be thisweek. The bandwagon of OMs that I jumped on sinceRd 1 has been able to carry my big carcass and stillget to the OF, and there's no reason whv I shouldjump off today. To the roars of delight from MickIhwer and Keith Schilling, the Carroll Kiss of Deathgoes smack on the lips of OMs . The margin won't beas big as the 2nd Senu, but OMs will get thechockies today and add another flag on the wall, when they prevail by 28 pts .

Old M elbun:ians ( 1/2) vs Old Paradians (6/4)G.' by 20 ptsThe boys from Bundoora are back in town with agreat will last week and get another crack at the

premiership favourites . There's a big chance for aflag for the Green and Purples, and the KeepersArms will be pumping today (and tonight andtomorrow) if they can snatch a victory. Today will betheir d^r% although it will not be easy .

Whitefriars took the Premiership Cup to Friar Parkwith a hard fought victory over a gallant St BedesM entone Tigers at the windswept Elsternwick Parkon Saturday. My congratulations to Eddie Power,Norm Elliott, Greg Feutrill, Anthony Carbone and all

the Friars team on a terrific season capped off withthe Premiership Cup. Cuz was to sleep with it onSaturday Night . To Dale Collins, Marty Ruddick,Russell Barnes and the Tiger players well done onyour efforts you gave of your best and your grace indefeat was terrific to see .

I now put my pen to rest after a terrific and enjoyableC-Section season and look forward to returning yetagain in 2003 . Thanks to you all for your greatsupport .

REVIEW'Very blustery conditions greeted the players as theyran onto the field to commence their last game for2002 . The Tigers started the better and seemedmore settled as the Friars appeared to be a fractionnervous . Timmy Beasley in arguably his last gamefor his club set the wheels in motion from the ruckconstantly getting the ball down to Andrew Hayesand the little Mouse who were giving the Friarsmidfield some worrying moments. Steven Kidd wasalso proving a handful for the Friars defense whowere made to work hard. At the first change theTigers led 5 .7 to 2 .0 a couple of posters not helpingtheir cause . But in was certainly their best start in afinal's game this year.

Nothing during the first term warned us of theavalanche that was to follow. Sure by the end of thefirst the Friars had settled into the game and kickingwith the wind they were certainly not out of it . But11 goals straight . WOW. It was some of the bestfinal's football anyone could wish to see . Long goals, high marking, slick handball, fast running, greatteamwork, and all of a sudden the course of theGrand Final had changed . The Tigers to their creditkept attacking and to kick three of their own goalsinto that breeze was still a good quarter of football .The third had to belong to the Tigers if they were tostamp their mark on the game and have any chance .They attacked incessantly but could not force theirway through the strong Whitefriars defence whocontinued to send the ball forward. Tim Beasley washaving a great battle with Rob Pasqualotto as wasMatt Power with Hayes . Richie Pawlik was markingeverything in sight, his brother Adam continuallydrove it out of the centre and the Tiges were missing

Mouse who had hurthis ankle, but the leftfoot of Moose was ana d e q u a t ereplacement . And soat the final break of the season it was the Friars whostill held sway.

The battle continued ferociously in the last as theTigers threw everything at the leaders in a last ditcheffort to switch the balance of power. At the 20minute mark it was still only 15 points thedifference, the breeze had abated slightly the boysfrom Mentone were still attacking and anythingcould have happened. But the Friars steadied theship as we entered time on and kicked 3 late goalsto extend the lead out to some 40 points when thecurtain was drawn on 2002 as the siren sounded onC-Section for the last time. It was fitting that the twobest sides in the competition over the whole year hadput on a great exhibition of football in the GrandFinal.

Matt Power was a worthy winner of the Rittermanmedal for the BOG, he was followed closely by thePawlik Brothers, Sweeper Northey, Swain off halfback and I thought little Kennedy was a real goer allday. For the Tigers no one tried as hard as TimBeasley a top performance, Andrew Hayes was goodall day, Paul Wintle held firm down back, MattMcCraw was terrific in the midfield and Steven Kiddwas always dangerous up forward .Congratulations to all the Umpires appointed to thegame especially Wayne Hinton and Timmy Sutcliffewho put aside their disappointments and did aterrific job .

Caulfield Grammarians played the conditions betterto record a hard fought, but well deserved win overOld Camberwell in the early game.

Congratulatii n 3t ° &! . u I one for giving thespectators such a magnificent game to watch lastweek . The N311-earned tcam trophy, the E .F.AucinsCup (intact this year I'm delighted to report!) willreside at Bennettswood for the next twelve months :and Guy Donovan of St Leos took out theJ .W.Manton Medal for the Best Player in the GrandFinal. Sean Walsh and Brett Sebire and theirCommittees, have every reason to be proud of theirrespective Club's achievements in 2002 !Well done to Michael Dixon of Mentoaie Amateursfor winning the L,S .Pepper Medal for the Di SectionB & F for 2002 .

An apology to Darren Turner of St Leos for omittinghis name as Coach of the D I Section Team of theYear published last week. I wasn't being deviousDarren, I simply missed transmitting a line of copy!Having done reasonably well with the H & A tips thisseason, I'm happy to admit failing to pick a .r7nnerin the Seniors' Finals Series! Final's footy ISdifferent!

Mentone Amateurs met at the City Oval Box Hill innearly ideal conditions, except for a 3-4 goalsfluctuating northerly favouring the Scoreboard end,to which Tony Macgeorge elected to kick . Gooddecision that, with the Vultures dominating thequarter and ending Qi with a 32 points lead . TheYellow Topped persons & Catering Staff were close toexhaustion by the first break, as the mid twentiestemperature increased the fluid intake demands ofplayers and spectators alike . The energy and skillsdisplayed by both sides in the opening term werequite outstanding, and that held true until the finalsiren . The Sullivan & Barr boys, O'Meara andRowley were all prominent for Mentone early. Q2was a reversed reprise of the first with thedominance role switching to the Animals, as theirrunners used the breeze to flood the scoring zonewith usable opportunities . Up fortvard, Vaughan ,Ash Brown, & Nick Hodder converted those chancesefficiently, and the Animals took the lead late in theterm. In addition, the St Leos' defence held theiropponents to a solitary point, with Tim McCann,Krebs, Buckle and Donovan all having a biginfluence on the rebounding rate . The long breaksaw the Animals convert a 5 goal deficit to a closing4 points lead, not significant admittedly, but DarrenTurner would have been happy with the way hisplayers had wrested the momentum from their

opponents . Q3 was anarm wrestle, with IMentone temporarilyregaining theascendency, only to se eSt Leos, by sheer grinding persistency, increase theirlead by a further 8 points to take a 2 goals advantageinto the 3rd break. This was a major change fromthe three previous meetings between these two greatsides this season. On those occasions, the Vultureshad forced the Animals into a catch up modality, and had been able to answer every challenge . Theearly minutes of Q4 saw 'Stammer' Johnsonconverting defence into attack, culminating in TonyMac drilling a super goal at the 1 0 minute mark tolevel the scores! A couple of minutes later though,Nick Hodder slotted one through from theMiddleborough Rd boundary to regain the lead, andthat was followed in quick succession by great goalsto St Leos by Paul Ristevski (from a wonderfulmark), and Julian Hodder, repeating an apparentHodder speciality, a magnificent long shot from theouter boundary. A further goal to Brendan Vaughanin the 20th minute band gave his side a 4 goalsbreak, and though the Vultures reduced that to 17points in the last few minutes, victory was beyondthem . Thus the Animals took the flag, in the bestFlag deciding game this scribe has seen for manyyears . The match was a tribute to the level of skillsand endurance developed in their respective sides byCoaches, Darren Turner & Tony Macgeorge, in thatboth teams went flat out from beginning to end, andtheir discipline never faltered throughout. The gamewas further enhanced by professional performancesfrom Field Umpires Robert Sneddon & RichardEastwood .

University B] cks took on AJA"_ with the latterresplendent in catchy little Apple Green numbers (StKilda training jumpers) due to a declared jumperelash . Unfortunately, the Jackas alternate strip hadthe effect of rendering them semi-invisible againstthe grass of the arena, inducing a certain amount ofdysfunctionality amongst the Blacks, who haddifficulty 'finding a man' during critical parts of thegame.

Every time the Blacks thought they had the game intheir grasp, the Jackas kept at them, to force extratime in the first place, and then to overtake and ivinin the dying seconds of the 2nd 5 minutes ExtraTime period . A superlative effort! Jackas hadterrific efforts from defenders Elliott Rubenstein &

Sol Newstadt, with great support from NeilIsraelsohn, & Lee Szkolnik . Whilst they'd bedisappointed by the result, Blacks had good gamesfrom Hugh Peck who kicked critical goals, AndrewNeville racked up piles of hard-ball gets, NathanGorman across HB, and Mick Staunton at CHB .

_ - ~~r 71- ~}-----J ~ ---Nlonash Blues and AJAX clash in the final Dimatch of the season, unless a replay is necessary ofcourse! After last week's Preliminary t ri umph theJackas could rightly expect to be in with a showagainst the Ashers today. The latter have to beraging favourites, but so was Blacks last week, andthe Jackas just ignored the ratings! I will still go forthe Ashers to win by 3-4 goals, but they wi ll not beable to relax at any stage !

CRAIG'S SAYI NG FOR THE WEEK :Joe Frazier once said . If I lose I can always walk away and

not feet bad because I always did all I could - there wasnothing more I could have done."

The EN D is HEA R ! Whether you are a footballer, official, supporter, or umpire, good management principles suggestthat one should review the year. After reviewing 2002, we should assess our performance (andenjoyment) to determine how we went and what our agendashould be for 2003 . Will we, slip back gracefully, maintain ourperformance, or set our goals higher?Others may opt to retire or take a new direction in theirsportileisure endeavours. For umpires opting to change, youmay choose to transfer from, the Boundary to the Field, Fieldto the Goals, become an observer, or retire. Footballers lookingfor a change may choose to retire, become coaches, officials, ortake up a new sport. Some footballers and supporters mayeven contemplate becoming umpires and for these people hereare some insights on umpiring . Umpiring is the ultimatesporting challenge . If you specifically want to improve yourrunning ability, become a boundary umpire - running 10 to 15Kms per game is not unusual at the elite level. If you want tobe running fit and develop your supervision and managerialskills - take up field umpiring . If you have the ability tomaintain your concentration during periods of inactivity andthen respond instantly and correctly to explosive situations -become a Goal umpire . As an umpire you have to be mentallyalert all day. Umpiring - It's the instant feedback, non-contactteam sport . It's a real buzz to call the action correctly and havethe game flow smoothly . The biggest achievement must be, toknow that you have done what most people won't even attempt, let alone achieve, ie umpire . Umpiring is the supervision &managerial sport ; it's the ultimate sporting challenge. As anumpire - to use a boxing term - you are ringside to the action .If you want to accept the ultimate sporting challenge, come andjoin us . How? contact this column, the VAFAUA, or the VAFA.

We're happy to report Phil has nearly rectified that .

2 Grand Final revie :Yarra Valley continued its astonishing 2002 for mwhen it trounced Salesian by a massive 139 pointsat Central Reserve to win the club's thirdpremiership. The day was made more memorablewith the Bushrangers seconds also winning thereserves premiership .

Bushrangers coach, Tim Killworth capped off astellar season maneuvering his players anddelivering timely tactics to perfection . His chargerswere fierce at the ball, ran hard in numbers andturned on all the skill and team work that was theirtrademark throughout the year.

Ash Drew was outstanding with his pace and skillseemingly unstoppable. He won the A R Fellowsmedal for best on ground and after finishing secondin the league best and fairest the week before, wasthe toast of many celebrations .Phil Valoppi cut out Salesian's prime mover IvanBobetic, who appeared to get injured in the secondquarter and had little impact on the game . Chri sBeal was another key player through the middle andkicked four goals in tricky conditions, and in thenick the effort by Paul Cremean against Salesiancaptain, Andy Campbell was also important .

In the first quarter Yarra Valley kicked with the aidof a strong breeze. They finished with six for theterm and set up a reasonable lead. But it was theperformance in the second quarter that won thematch ; the Bushrangers bagged seven goals into thewind to Salesian's two . From here on it was aquestion of how far. Salesian players seemed to stopand lose belief, and after being beaten twice by theBushrangers in the past four weeks who could.blame them .

Bushrangers President, Steve Le Get says the teamsaved their best performance for last .

"The result is fantastic for the club. The boysrealised you don't get to many opportunities to winpremierships, so they really seized the moment,"says Steve .

"The second quarter effort to score so heavily intothe wind was the turning point. From half timeonwards it was a case of open the gates becausehere comes flood .

Yarra Valley booted an amazing 12 goals in the thirdquarter -a club record for the most in a quarter.Their forwards were dominant, midfielders ran hardand backmen snuffed any Salesian attempt to goforward .James Keem kicked four crucial goals in the first

half before leaving thefield with a knock tothe head. Ben Crowean under 19sgraduate took som etelling marks, Sam Savage provided play of the daykicking a huge goal from outside 50 meters in thethird quarter. He took on three opponents in thecentre, beat them and ran to just outside the arc tobelt home an inspirational goal to the delight ofBushrangers players and supporters .

It was Yarra Valley sixth senior grand final and theysecured the flag by playing with the same style anddominance they have showed all season . And witha young talented list, the average age between 20and 24 years, the future looks promising for theclub.Salesian can still be proud of their efforts thisseason . They were beaten by the D2 benchmark, ateam hardly troubled all year. They had terrificservice from ruckman Andrew Campbell who battledtirelessly all day, as well as support from Thain andKnott . In the end the rigors of a three match finalscampaign seemed to have an effect on the players asthey succumbed to the might and power of YarraValley.

Reserves:In a close match Yarra Valley hung on to win bythree points against Peninsula in tricky, windyconditions. The Bushrangers got off to a flyer kicking eight goalswith the wind, but from then on the Pirates workedthemselves back into the game. They kicked 10 ofthe next 14 goals and controlled the play in the lastquarter with the ball in their forward half for most ofthe term . In the end they ran out of time and YarraValley held on to a hard fought victory.

Better players for the Bushrangers were Hale withfour goals, Davies two and getting plenty of touches, and Gillies also contributed. For Salesian's theywere well served by Barber, Gardner and Stainforth.

The premiership is Yarra Valley's first from fourattempts at reserve level.

is a reminder i~ ; ~~. U . a 3t :e:-~ - in','w j'oflloaari ! a

a r on ogsPas-w t°itionally in sport evidenced by the recent demise of Nell

Balme at Melbourne FC, coaches bear the brunt ofre s,~onsibility for a team's poor performance. In some cases thesacking of a coach may be justified, but in others the team mayas well have been not performing to the best of its ability . In

lbourne's situation the pundits generally agreed that Balme:i an excellent coach. Joseph Gutnick also acknowledged

that. Then why was he sacked? Simply because the team hadlilt rock bottom and the administrators had to be seen to bedoing something to remedy the situation. The thinking is that

a new broom can't do any worse . My research on AFL coachingwould not support such a decision. A change of coach on

average, produces improved ladder positions in the following_ :ason on only 50% of occasions ie : you're just as likely to goback as go forward - a poor result when you consider that mostchanges are made when teams occupy a lowly position .

Such results are not surprising because a change of coach mayonly be a band aid solution for a club not willing, or perhapscapable of addressing more significant issues . Without beingclose to the Melbourne scene it is difficult to assess, but mediareports would indicate that Balme had support from most of theplayers . In the week of media attention very few specificcriticisms of Balme's coaching emerged, apart from a perceivedlaid back approached prohibiting his ability to "fire up theplayers" . When you consider the whole range of his skillsinvolved in coaching, such criticism would be meagre at best .The bottom line was that the team was not successful, so let'sget another coach became the catch c ry .So what is a better solution? I start with the premise that acoach builds up a relationship with players over time and thatsuch knowledge should not be tmderstated. He learns how tot - z t motivate and communicate with his players . Sack him andthe new coach has to start again - in most cases that is adisadvantage . What I advocate is that coaches and indeed allstaff, be subjected to critical review on a range of establishedcriteria . Once developed then die coach identifies areas toimprove his performance . In this sense desirable coachingbehaviours are shaped by the coach managers. Preferably thesemanagers should be well educated about the role of the coach .This process was undoubtedly followed at Geelong in MalcolmBlight's reign, and as a result he left a better coach . The clubrecognised his assets and worked cooperatively with Malcolmover the (6) years to shape him into an even more skilled coach .Perhaps Adelaide is now reaping the benefits of Geelong'sendeavours .So before your club thinks about sacking your coach considerthe possibility of engaging an independent consultant to reviewthe coaching process with a view to establishing areas for the

[, i :iC,;

continued development of the coach . Independent thinking ispreferable, since such a person is not hamstrung by traditionalvalues or personalities . At the very least, start to compile a listof criterion for evaluating your coach and conduct a detailedassessment before you decide to give him the bullet .It is beyond the scope of this article to outline the areas ofevaluation, but you might consider such things as organisationand conduct of training sessions, know, ledge of tactics . ability toanalyse the skills and to give meaningful feedback to players, preparation strategies for players and team, coaching roleduring the games, ability to liase with support staff - the listcould go on but hopefully you get the idea . In short coachingperformance should be measured more comprehensively thanon the scoreboard .Shaping coach behaviour may be preferable to the constantturnover of coaches, because a never ending return to squareone may inhibit optimal progress of your club, by negatingmany of the positive contributions of a coach . So perhaps theeasy way may not be the best .

GRAND FINAL RIUMWarm conditions greeted the combatants down atCheltenham Reserve as West Brunswick andHawthorn squared of.

The Hawks kicked with the aid of the breeze in thefirst quarter but failed to capitalise on some earlyopportunities . West Brunswick concentrated onshutting Hawk Dan Lauletta down whilst relying, upon Sam Pietch to drive the ball fonvard of the halfback flank . At quarter time, the Westies held a solidthree goal lead. The Westies kicked the first goal of the secondquarter and the game looked almost already over.West, Hamilton and Cannane were being wellserviced by Gartlan in the ruck . The Hawks dugdeep though and managed to get within a few goalsat the major break.

It was now or never for the Hawthorn boys as theyendeavoured to surge during the third quarter. Theygot within 2 points half way through but from thenon the Westies machine rolled into action. A tightdefence, a hard working midfield werecomplemented by an athletic fon.vard line . TheWesties three goals up at the last break . •

Hawthorn desperately needed the first goal but itwasn't to be as the Westies went on a rampage, slamming on a number of goals and putting thegame beyond doubt .A fantastic win for the Magpies as they look forwardto the challenges D2 brings as do the Hawks, buoyedby an average age of 22 years and whilst adisappointing finish, some satisfaction of a greatyear of footy.

Seas®nis Summary - Team by TeamWest Brunswick capped off a remarkable final'campaign with a fantastic win in the Grand Final .Adam Cannane in particular was the standout bothduring the season, winning the D3 Section Best andFairest, as well as Best on Ground in the GrandFinal . Other players of note included Richard andSteven Benjamin, Rob West, Sam Pietch and PeterHamilton . They will hope to be more competitive inD2 in the upcoming season .

Hawthorn , of course, would be disappointed atlosing the Grand Final, but at least achieved.promotion. Peter Tyson has been one of the bettercoaches in the VAFA lower grades for some timenow, and I'm sure the Hawks will be a credibleopponent next season, especially if they still havethe likes of Cargill, Steele, the Avery brothers and

Lautettaaround.

Even moredisappointedwould be St . John's dC. They certainly justifiedtheir lofty reputation by finishing minor premiers, but crashed out of the finals in straight sets. Usualsuspects Steven Koppens, Peter Walker and ScottHilton once again had great seasons, while ChrisHorbury was always a danger in the forward pocket.I still think they will be a force to reckon with in2003, as long as they can keep this calibre of player .

Elsternwick, under the coaching of Peter Olivieri, defied many people's expectations by clinching afinal's berth in the last round of the season after anentertaining race with Swinburne . Leigh Murphy'smid-season return was instrumental in theirresurgence, while the likes of Jack Neill, CraigMahony and Gary Elvin were also important to thecause, as were Anton Burney's 70-odd goals for theseason .Swinburne were unlucky to miss out on the finalsafter being most people's tip as relegation fodder .They were probably the most exciting team to watch, especially with their key fonvard combination ofJason Murchie and Matt Higgins, not to mentionSimon Fragiacomo at centre half back andmidfielder/on-baller Ben Prior. Definitely a team towatch.

Syndal Tally Ho had a solid season, although some

may have been disappointed after their allconquering reign on D4 in 2001 . Nonetheless, thecontributions of John Rutter, Chris Cachia and MattMoresi would have been pleasing, as would theopening of the new social rooms in the middle of thisseason .

South Melbourne Districts had an indifferentseason, and with a few weeks to go it seemedobvious that they had little hope of making thefinals, nor were they any realistic chance of beingrelegated . I really don't know as much of this teamas I'd like, but I 'was impressed by ex-SandringhamDragon Richard Cheevers.

Monash Gryphons were probably the biggestunderachievers this season. As their percentageindicates, they were very competitive in most games, but simply weren't able to chalk up the wins when itcounted . They still had plenty of talent at theirdisposal such as Adrian Flowerday, Lee Wells andTony Gross, yet their D3 status was not preserveduntil Round 18 .Power House's second consecutive relegation wasfinally confirmed on the last day of the season witha home defeat against Monash, and a poor start wastheir biggest hindrance . They showed signs of arevival in the second half of the year, and almostpulled off an escape of Houdiniesque proportions.Senior and Boland were their most consistent thisseason.

Richmond Central's never really got off the ground, with their only match points being awarded due to atechnicality . Nonetheless, they were still up for itweek in, week out and still had some talent on thepark, most significantly quintuple best and faires t

Thanks to anyone who has sent in information forour column this year, always a bit tough with adouble act, but with Ed's boys going up, and somenew teams coming in, it will be interesting to seehow things go next year, regardless of who is in thescribe's chair in 2003 .

After a long and arduous season, it had come down to th e

two pre-season favorites, in Rupertswood and Werribee to

battle it outfor premiership glory. The clubs administration

can relax somewhat, in the thought that their respective

teams will be in D3 next season, however, for the players,

they play for only one reason, and that is a premiership .

Well done to all the players on making it to the final hurdle

and good luck on bringing home the "Holy Grail".

REVIEWSeniors - Preliminary Fina lRupertswood vs Albert Park On a day when the wind wasblowing like the proverbial, Rupertswood won the vital tossto kick with it . This allowed them to settle sooner than theFalcons, however, some fine work by Shaun Venables forAlbert Park enabled his team to remain in touch for thefirst twenty minutes . In true Rupertswood style, and withTreblecock, Webb and Spinner, all coming to the fore, a tenminute burst late in the quarter saw them pile on fourquick goals before the siren to see the Sunbury lads up byfive goals at quarter time.

In the second quarter, it was the Falcons turn to kick withthe breeze and with Julian Storey, Andre DiMingo, Wes Roeand Vinny Surace all doing well, Albert Park were able tomake some headway into Rupo's lead . Albert Park's ShaunVenables was strong in the air and was being wellsupported by Dave Overend and Joey Robilotta, however, the margin was still four goals at the main break .

Rupertswood then looked to bury the Falcons with thebreeze in the third quarter, and with Flinn and McDonaldplaying well, Rupo were able to bombard the goals. Withthe Albert Park defence under siege, some strong andtenacious defence caused most shots to be rushed and thetwo goals from ten scoring shots gave Albert Park somehope in the final quarter .The last quarter was the thing that final's football are madeof. Albert Park desperately fought their way back into thegame as they totally dominated play. With accurate kickingand a tight defence, the Falcons got within 11 points at the20 minutes mark . In the remaining minutes of the match, the Rupertswood team showed some of the character thatmay have evaded them in the previous season, andweathered the storm to concede only one point andultimately book a ticket to the grand final, and shake thatD4 finals monkey off their back with a ten point victory .

Reserves - Preliminary Final

North Brunswick vs Albert Park Albert Park took on thestrong North Brunswick team keen to make amends forlast week's poor form and kicking with the wind in the firstquarter were able to shoot away to an early lead . With Jodie

Taylor dominating theruck, the Falconforwards in Pastras,Parmansche andNorman were able toassert their authority to go into the first quarter break five

goals in front. North were able to regain some composure

in the second quarter through some good work by WayneDunson, however, the team failed to make any headway

into the Falcon's lead . In the third quarter. North fought

back hard and after kicking two goals into the breezelooked as though they could be a chance in the final

quarter. This was not to be however, and as Adrian Harper

stood up to be counted for the Falcons, his team was ableto regain their authority on the match to run out eventual

26 point winners .

PREVIEWSeniors - Grand Fina lWerribee Amateurs vs Rupert swood After two years ofshowing great potential, Rupertswood have finally beenable to deliver on this potential to their supporters andachieve a berth in today's Grand Final, while Werribee, after some fantastic pre-season recruitment, have takenthe next step in their club's progression to lead all seasonand deservedly have the chance to ruin Rupo'scelebrations. The teams have met three times this season, however, it was Werribee that won two weeks ago to gainthe mental advantage.

Werribee, fresh from their week's rest, will go into thismatch as the clear favorite, and with the quality of Lovelland Keogh likely to play big parts in the Tiger's game planit is going to take a huge effort to knock them off theirmantle . With that said, Rupertswood have proven theyhave the players to do just that, and having shaken thefinals monkey off their back last week are poised for greatthings. With the return of Malty West from injury andcombining with the sheer class of Baines and Burrows itcould be Rupo's day . However, I think that Werribee hasthe legs to stave off the Rupertswood running game andwith Tedesco on fire, the Bees will take out the D4premiership with a well-deserved 11-point lrictory .

Reserves - Grand Fina lWerribee vs Albe rt Park Albert Park has performedadmirably to get a chance to have another crack atWerribee after their semi final loss two weeks ago . The twoteams have been fairly even in their meetings during theseason . however, the Falcons will be hoping for good gamesfrom the likes of Steve Fairfield, Justin Norman and JasonRowe in order to ensure they do not get off to a slow startas they did in the Semi. Werribee on the other hand, will

Page 49: The Amateur Footballer, Week 22, 2002

have no doubt benefited from the week's rest and will behoping to set the tone for a big Werribee double . Collier andVelisha in defence will provide headaches for the Falconforwards and with a wealth of talent around the ball,Werribee should set the tone for the day with a memorable22-point victory .

into top gearin the second .

A fine sunny day presented itself for the Under 19Section 1 Grand Final . Old Brighton won the tossand elected to kick tivith the aid of the 4-goal breezeto the southern end . Match ups were Smith v .

Sierakowski, Peel v . Ryan, Gissfng v. J . Salem,

O'Keefe v. J . McCowan and Chard v . Hughes. The

game began as expected at a furious pace with bothteams running hard and direct at the ball . The first

goal came at the three-minute mark from a long ballto a long lead from Smith marking on the HFboundary - 50m out - goal . One minute later, A .

Salem roved a ground ball off HF and kicked truly -

the O. B. crowd erupted . Five minutes later,Mentiplay roved a boundary throw in and snapped

truly . Half way through the first, Furzer had kicked

another - O . B . 's were off to a flying start . SKOBS

were running hard and finally got some direction intheir forward thrusts with Gissing marking twiceand Kempton once to kick the final three goals of the

quarter. The second quarter was a bruising affair

with O .B . continually harassing the SKOBS on-batters and Furzer (the VAFA equivalent of ByronPickett) causing havoc around the ball . At half time

in a very even contest, SKOBS led by one point . The

huge crowd of between 1500-2000 people hadwitnessed a fantastic first half and with the game inthe balance, you could cut the air with a knife .

Coach Obee made the match-winning move of thegame with Smith into the ruck after half time, wherehe roamed between CHB & CHF. His pure

aggression at the ball caused enormous pathways

for the O .B . on-ballers to run through and his longkicking into the goal lines continually gave A . Salem

the opportunity to bag his eight goals . St . Kevins

gave their all, but their on-ballers just didn't find theroom they needed to get the ball into their forwardzone quickly and clearly . The result being thirteen

last half goals to O .B . and two goals to St . Kevins .

Congratulations to Coach Obee and the O .B .F.C .

Well done, and just remember - when the Indianswere circling, this cowboy never got off the wagon!

SECTION 2 - _f HAL

Old Essendon took out the Section 2 premiershipwith a brutal display of powerhouse football lastweekend, so much so that Ormond were prettymuch left in their wake. Ormond had first use of thebreeze and failed to capitalise despite the untirin g

Not happy

home 6 majors to 1 behind to literally sow the game

up. Flaherty up forward was in everything, as towere King and Forrest, ably supported by Stormont,

Miles medallist Cooper and Mezo . The last half

proved to be all OEG as they ran out convineing

winners . Commiserations to the Monds who battledman fully but in the end their three week final's

campaign told on them, they were also outclassed

judging from all reports but never gave in . To OEG

and Marshall Fisher congratulations on an

exceptional season that I'm sure will have the seniorsection of the club rubbing their hands together, asthey plan for bigger and better things in years to

come in VAFA senior sections .

SECTION 3 - GRAND FINALA monumental game at Vic .Park with the two bestsides of the competition going head to head . It was

Old Paradians through the strong play of S. Maher,

D . Strickland and Hyde who began the better andalthough keeping their noses in front OP's looked tohave the upper hand . But take nothing away froman experienced final's unit like Old Cambenvell whothrough Manvood (5) and Birrell enabled the Wellersto remain within striking distance. At the half OP's

led but by a comfortable 14 points . In a dourstruggle in the third the Wellers through Clyne,Shanks and Whelan whittled the lead down to ten

points. The last was a ripper with both side :

throwing off the shackles and in the warneonditions both sides staged a shootout, the Wellenadding 6 majors to the OP's 4 to win by the barest o

margins . A wonderful display of U19 footballCongratulations to Michael Sigalas and the Wellenwho are making a habit of U19 premierships, and tthe OP's, Peter Hansen and Tony Quimcommiserations but well done on an equallsatisfying year - both clubs can definitely build o :

U19 success this year to add further strength to thsenior sections of their respective clubs .

Ajax defeated a gallant and bruising OakleigKrushers in a scrappy game at Bentleigh ReservCoach Moore had his Krushers absolutely pump(to the max and at their very aggressive best; yet Aj

were able to scoot away to a 32 point lead andquarter time. Leigh Fetter, who was probably theJackers best player last game against the Blues inthe second semi, was unfortunately knocked out inthe fiery opening quarter and did not return to thefray. (Special note: we all hope Leigh is O .K . andready for this week.) Oakleigh continued theirphysical pressure on the Jackers and by the majorbreak had clawed their way back to within 7 points .A number of questions were now being asked of bothsides, namely could Ajax get their free running goalkicking game going? Or would Oakleigh's man onman, physical confrontational style of playintimidate Ajax to such an extent that a boil overwas in the offing? The third quarter saw a very evenaffair with Ajax holding the ascendancy by 23 pointsat the last change . The fourth quarter was the sameas the first three . Oakleigh continually ran the ballforward but they had no real system up forward tokick the necessary goals required to win . Whereasthe Jackers had only to give the likes of Chester,Peters and Thurin some room and goals werekicked. Ajax home by 23 points .

St. Bernards (2) proved all punters right when theyran out convincing winners against Aquinas last

Saturday. The Bernies have been the yardstick allseason and in a super display of football in the

conditions kept the Bloods goalless in the secondand third quarters, while adding i l goals

themselves . Mitchel up forward -with 6 wasoutstanding as was Lyon medallist Levides and

Hurley. For the Bloods, whose three week campaign

began to tell on them in the warm conditions,Sorace, McMullen and Parker never gave in, while

Kogelman again tried in vain to lift his side. But all

said and done the Bloods had a wonderful seasonand playing off in the GF would have no doubt beena wonderfiil thrill to Terry McEvoy and all the

players and support staff. Let's hope the core groupof players can stick tight and put pressure on the

senior players in the next couple of years and assistin their rise up the grades . To David Law, John

Hughes, Paul Garth and the players - well done . You

were clearly the best team in the section all seasonand we wish you well for future successes at both

U19 and senior level - as all indicators point to avery successful era is just beginning .

JRANQ FINA LAnd now, bring on the Grand Final at Box Hill VFLground, 2 .00pm start, between the two clear leadersof the pack, Monash Blues and Ajax. The Minardisv. The Ferraris! The Monash team boasts bid, tallrunning players lead by Captain Blood himself an d%AFA Best and Fairest for Section Blue, Paul Neville .

reas the Ajax team boasts a fleet of small

running players and proven goal kickers in Chesterand Peters . In a cliffhanger, the result will be decidedby the big ruckmen Neville, getting his hand on theball first and therefore, not allowing the Jacker on-

ballers first use . This should allow the likes ofGilbert and Grace to get enough free-running clear

football in the forward line to kick a winning score .

But Monash - beware! The wide expanse of the BoxHill oval could hold enough open spaces for Ajax to

run into and score .

R.S . Thanks to Peter Cunliffe for his very descriptivec-mails! !

Note: Saturday 21st is truly a blockbuster with thecurtain raiser to the Under 19 Section Blue GrandFinal being the D Grade Reserve Grand Finalbetween Monash and Ajax - fanbloodytastic! !
