This weekend sees the

curtain cm~_, da : :n on

another successful

season of Amateur

football .

ilst it has been a

successful one, i n

many ways it has also been a sad one, as a

number of people who were with us at the

commencement of the year are not with us today.

Our highly respected treasurer Noel Rundle

recently passed away, there have been numerous

club identities pass on and we all mourned the

tragic passing of De La Salle's Anthony Molan . A

highlight for me this weekend will be assisting Noel

Rundle's much loved partner Judy Watts with the

presentation of the A section reserves cup named

after the great Noel Rundle .

During these difficult times a salient feature of our

Association has stood out .

That is, apart from the playing of football matches,

this Association is about its clubs and their people .

It is about people drawing from each other

support, comfort, and solace. It is about

encouraging each other to carry on, and as I said

only a short while ago, it is about putting the past

behind us and looking to the future .

The manner in which you have all supported the

various families throughout the year has made me

very proud both of yourselves and our Association .

The A and r se 2 G--.nd Finals are the finale

our finals s( 5 .

They are the culmination of a year's planning and

hard work by the four respective clubs and I

congratulate St B ernards, Old Xaverians ,

uitefs-iars an d De La S alle on earning the righ t

to play off for the A and B section premierships .I wish all clubs the very best of luck . May you all

play well and represent your club and our

Association in the very best traditions of Amateur

football .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2003

In acknowledging successes of the year, I wouldo co: all the winners of

ie i ; :ided so far,rne suc4,ss of our Association should not be

centred entirelv on the successful.

We are made up of seventy-three clubs, all of whodisplay the same passion, the same desire tosucceed and the same love for the game . Noteveryone can win premierships but by playing ourgreat game and by being a part of our greatAssociation you are I. winners .I thank you all for you marvellous contributionand to the opportunities you provide to so manypeople .I announced at our recent Vote Count andPresentation Evening that this was my third andlast year as your President. As this is the final "Amateur Footballer"

publication for this year I want to say to all of you

what a very great honour it has been for me to

have been President of our Association and I want

to sincerely thank everyone for their support and

encouragement throughout my term .

What ever little I have done, could not have been

done without the great support and hard work of

my E xecutive Committee so capably led by our

Chairman Bruce Mc'f:agg€art, and also of course

by our marvellous staff led by Phil Stevens

supported by Brett Connell, Sue Anderson, Peter

Harris, Cliff Bastow and Kate Balme .

I thank each and everyone of you .

I invite you all to enjoy this weekend's games and

I look forward to welcoming you all back in 2004 .

Another season draws to a close today, and as Richard Evans remarked in hi s

colunul today it certainly has been a "bitter sweet" year, with plenty of fantastic

football played, many memorable achievements attained all tinged with a few

sad moments .The sad loss of De La Salle's Anthony Molan and the loss of Noel Rundle have

been well documented, but one sad story which inspired a triumph has been

without doubt the Beaumaris Football Club's remarkable C section premiership

win . Squeezing into the four by 0 .63% the Sharks then defeated Caulfield

Grammarians, St Leos Emmaus Wattle Park and flag favourites Collegians to

PHIL STEVENSCHIEF EXECUTIV E

OFFICER

secure the flag. The club had dedicated the season to young Damien Guidolin, the club's 2000 Under 19captain and an emerging talent who was tragically killed before the start of the season . It was fitting that

Damien 's best mate Brayden Haynes won the medal for the player judged best on the ground in the C section

grand final. What a wonderful example of turning adversity into a powerful motivating force .

When an AFL club experiences success you hear the president thanking everyone from the boot-studder up

to the club's best player. And so it is with the VAFA's Executive and Administration . Although not everyone

can find the time to put in the vast number of hours, that for example a Richard Evans has for years, every

person who serves on the Executive, works full-time or part-time for the Administration or serves on avoluntary basis on a sub-committee or who just plain "helps out" in their small way is thanked for their

contribution to the success of season 2003 .The wonderful thing about the paid and unpaid servants of the VAFA is that they contribute as a part of ateam and act on behalf of the team and not as an individual seeking the limelight for him or herself .

As it is Richard Evans' final "hurrah" today as our president, I thank and congratulate him on his

wonderful contribution during his term as president and before that his magnificent seven years as chairman

of the permit and reinstatement committee . Bruce McTaggart's contribution as chairman has been

wonderful in terms of support and guidance, and his legal background and ability to think clearly and fairly

has been of immeasurable value to myself, and also to Sue Anderson in the operation of the tribunal and the

investigations .To our General Manager of Football Operations Brett Connell and Administration Officer Sue Anderson, I

thank them both sincerely for "hanging in there" during what has been a year burdened by extra duties and

many draining emotional situations . Hey guys, we've made it !! !

Also to Peter Harris, Tony O'Ca ll aghan, Cliff and Mavis Bastow, Nancy McTaggart, "Mighty" Mick Hall

our groundsman, and in recent times our "new kid" Kate Balme - thank you for all your efforts and support .

There are two possible sta rting dates for the 2004 season - the Saturday after Easter or the Saturday

before Easter . Easter next year falls April 9 - 12 so round one would be either Saturday April 17 or Saturday

April 3. To allow the VAFA to finish as usual the weekend before the AFL Grand Final we could, in all sections

2004, commence after Easter and play a three week finals series with all first and second semi finals to be

played on the first weekend of the finals or play a four week finals series meaning we would have to play one

round before Easter. As this affects clubs, the thoughts of the clubs will influence the Executive's decision

which will be made in October. Whatever decision is made the finals for all sections will be consistent - either

a 3 or 4 week series . INDEXA and B sections will play a split round July 17 - 24 and there Awards Night Photos .. . . .. .. . .... .. .. .. ... .. . .. . ... . .. .. .. . .. ..29

will be two AAFC matches, one in May, where players selecte d

will miss a club match and the second on the Queens Birthdayweekend where there is a complete VAFA bye. Ps

Best wishes to all for the off-season and to the "Fab Four"

left to battle out the two big ones this weekend .

IT WAS about five minutes into the thirdquarter when Quinny did his block .

"Bloody hell," he said . "I've hardly seen any ofit because I'm running after my girls, but everytime I have a look Old Scotch seems to kick agoal. "At that stage, the Cardinals had a foot in the

Grand Final .

They had extended a half-time lead to threegoals and Quinny and the Old Xavs brigadewere dropping their heads .

Then, with that, Old Xavs turned on the tapsand drenched the ground in champagne

football .

Ruckman Carey, a regular battler in the twos, baffled the rain-soaked crowd at SportscoverArena by leaving league best and fairestAndrew Crowe in the shade, AndrewBiddlecombe kept the dangerous LukeHawkins in leg shackles and Sam Johnson ranaround with the confidence of a man preparedto fight the front bar .Up forward, the leads from Scotty Mollard andJames Drake became livelier. Biddlecombeeven had the audacity to run off Hawkins tolay a hand on it in the midfield .Mollard, a mad-eyed, wild-haired type, dashed

out from the square on daring sprints and the

ball stuck to his hands . He kicked three goals

after parading an elegant kick .

Drake, the other spearhead, also finished wit hthree but he could have had more for he was atad wasteful .Both will be pivotal today .It is not known what words Michael Shollyserved up his men at the adjournment, butthey had the desired effect .

Old Xavs poured in seven goals to two in thethird quarter to put the game under lock andkey, then dished out three goals to none as aparting insult .

Quinny and thefaithful in red andblack noddedapprovingly ,knowing they'd be back for another Grand

Final .CAI2E?INAI. SIN ?Old Scotch will be able to find a few crumbs ofconsolation from the wreckage given the timefor a cool assessment.Lachie Thompson, the son of Brownlow

medallist Len, capped a top year with another

fine game and showed all the signs of a player

in the making .

Broad-backed and with the presence of few

boys his age, the under-19 best and fairestalso has a wonderful kick, not dissimilar to

the great Plugger in technique .

Andrew Crow was dominant for the first half, offering both presents to his small men and atarget across the ground.Old Scotch was the form side that fell over, butit will come back a sturdier side next year .

THE BIG CAHUNA

Old Xaverians and St Bernards both carried acloud of uncertainty with them on the eve ofthe finals, having gathered losing streaks .But both have shown passages of dynamitewhen it matters - at Elsternwick Park inSeptember .Watch out for Danny Jordan : boy, the mancan play .After impressing the powers at Geelong earlyin the season, he was snapped up by the VFL

side and finished his season with a bang .What's next for Jordan is anyone's guess, but

he's passionate about St Bernards and wasstill talking up a premiership defence with theDogs while everything was happening with the

Cats .

Jordan might be stood by AndrewBiddlecombe, who was sent out for a free feedby the boys from 96 .5 Inner FM for his effortsagainst Old Scotch .The were unanimous in giving him the gongfor man of the match .M IDFIELD WAR

The men around the ruckmen will decidewhether Jordan or Mad Mollard gets the most

opportunities and the protagonists in themiddle will make for riveting viewing .

St Bernards will rely on Danny Byrne and BenJordan while the Xavs will lean on Tim

Ockleshaw, the exciting Adam Chatfield andformer Saint Caydn Beetham .

Beetham had a quiet day against Old Scotch, but when he's been good this year he has beenirresistible .He is one of several VAFA players talked up forthis year's national AFL draft, along with Old

Haileybury's Mark Corrigan .

ONE'S NOT ENOUGH?Mick Hooper collected two goals and a flag

with St Bernards' under-19s last Saturdayand will have another crack at one today .

back in 12 months in this day and age is apretty ood effort. After a stellar season the past

Essendon. But they are resilient would have

learnt a lot from their experiences and willbounce back in 2004 .

REVIEWLittle Rob Bonnici thought all his Christmaseshad come at once when Sam Fleming won thetoss and amazingly kicked into the swirling,

howling breeze . Was this the Grammar Boy s

mindset for the day coming out in a negativemode . Well for the first 20 minutes you wouldnot have thought so as they matched it with DeLa and even kicked a couple into it to make itlook as the bold move had worked. But then forsome reason they relaxed and took the foot offthe pedal and De la rallied with Ben Mannix

each and a by the first break DMaloney a had opedned u p

a handy 34 point lead .Old Essendon had a pretty good second quarterwith Podger particularly dominant up forward

and started The Harrison Boys into

were providingthe De La forwards with plenty of opportunitiesas David Dugan and Jaye Foon missedrelatively easy s ots . The Grammar Boys tookthe ball into the forward half 15 times in thesecond quarter for only 4 major converts, but bythe long break had narrowed the gap to 8points .So the game was up for grabs as the ball wasbounced to begin the championship quarter. The wind had certainly not abated to any degreeat all so the Bombers task to contain the ~astrunning De La Salle players was not going to beeasy . ith the veteran Pat O'Callaghan nowtotally on top in the ruck and getting the ball toground where that little terrier Bonnici wassett in a fine example and was in and undereveryt~ing, feeding the ball forward where theBen Mannix show continued to prevail . Even

theseasoned veteran Andrew

Old~ssendon defended stoutly but a couple of

haphazard passesmade it easier for DeLa and at the finalchanise theGrammar Boys wer e48 points in arrears and their season and AGrade dream was all but over .

The Bombers tried to make a surge and goaledafter 90 seconds of play, but DLS steadied andtook total control of the many stoppages, withthe continued good form of Big POC and littleRobby totally influential. The e La defensiveunit was superb in containing the talented OEGside who had trouble with the conditions missedthe influence of Jordan Leask and mentallyappeared to be still suffering from last week .

Well done to De La Salle who advanced to theGrand Final

lpromoton to A Grade to celebrate te it's50 h year

in the VAFA.In the Reserves it was Old Brigton's ferociousattack on th

e the first quarter ball thwhil

e at shut the int o Old Parad astotally out of the game . OPS inaccuracycertainly did not help their cause 16 pointsbefore they scored their first major, but this is totake nothing away from the Tonners who wereterrific all day, especially Brook Logan whocontrolled the ruck, Liam O'Neill and- AndrewWalsh showed plenty of skill and courage, andAndrew Edge made a tremendous return aftercoming back from another injury .

PREVIEW

And so to the final game of the 2003 season theBig One, the Gr and Final. Something that everyaspirin club member dreams of being in whenall the ~ard yakka starts in January/ ebruary.

An all Catholic affair today promises to be agreat game . Both sides are at full strength andso will be offering no excuses . Let's hope theweather is One an we get conditions favourableto both sides .There is certainly some good natured rival rybetween the two club's with both Greg Feutrilland Tony Miller up to a few par ty tricks in thepast fortnight, but this wi ll be put in thebackground today as seriousness sets in . Thestakes are high . Friars would have enjoyed theweek's break last week while De La battled itout in the tough conditions at S an dy . PatO'Callagh an earnt his recall last week and if hecontinues that form he will make it hard forWood, and Pasqualotto to set it up for theirtalented mid fielders . But Leigh and PeterHarrison and Rob Bonnici give away nothing incomparison in that area .

Up forward Carrigg, Cunningham and RichardPawlik give the Friars plenty of marking optionsand of course Anderson always has to bewatched, while Ben Mannix was in superb touchlast week, while Maloney, Foon and Duggan arealways dangerous . Friars will welcome backKennedy and Campbell while DLS will re gainLaragy, Kosch and possibly young SpithilI sothere will be some disappointed players .

All in it promises to be a ripper game the fastflowing free moving Whitefriars unit who loveSportscover Arena against the good ordinaryDLS. Made the mistake of picking against theFriars last year and copped aew reminderphone calls on the Sunday, and as DLS do notwan t the Brain's Kiss of Death I will go with theboys from Park Orchards to advance to ASection with the flag .

RESERVES

With a full list to choose from DLS will be at fullstrength in the Ressies and thus and theirterrific Second Semi Final form should beenough to get them over Old Brigton who haveput in a fantastic effort to get here .

ReviewBeaumaris capped off a fairytale month offootball by taking out their first C Gradeflag over Collegians by 53 points . TheSharks were lucky to even be in the lastfour after sneaking into the finals by0 .63% from the Mentone Vultures . Thestory becomes even more amazing after itwas Collegians who defeated the Sharksin Rd18 by 12 points . One more goal fromLions would have ended the Sharksseason and may have provided them withthe 2003 flag . However, as fate would haveit the Sharks knocked off anundermanned Caulfield Or in the lst semiand tore apart the Animals in the prelimto face off against the Lions .The game was played with a 5-6 goalbreeze blowing towards the scoreboardend and it was the Sharks who had thefirst turn . The account was not openeduntil the 6min mark of the quarter asMark Boon slotted one through .Beaumaris then fell into the trap whengoing with a strong breeze and startedblazing shots from everywhere wastingseveral scoring opportunities . Mick Atkinswas dominant up forward giving theSharks a target to look for as Murray Pittsagain started in the goal square opposedto the tight checking Holst . Atkins cappedoff his good work with a goal and the gamethreatened to blow open in the Sharksfavour . The Lions persisted and startedmoving the ball into the breeze a lotbetter, leaving Shura Taft one out insidethe 45m are . A strong pack mark and goalfrom Shadbolt pulled the margin back in

after some. goodwork through themiddle fromShinkfield andHarrison. Goal of the day then quicklyfollowed from Jimmy Fry, dancing around4 Shark hackman before throwing it onhis boot to put his side within a kick atquarter time .The game was stacked heavily inCollegians favour as they took their turnwith the breeze in the 2nd qtr . The Sharkscoaching staff knew the only way theywere to stay in this game was to stack thebackline and sent the experienced PaulSherman to do the job as loose man .Ruckman Mick Matulick stood in theLions forward line making scoring goalsvery difficult for the Lions . It took them 11mins to finally penetrate through thedefence with a goal to Lang . Collegiansthen appeared to get on top but failed tocapitalise on their domination. Luck was

also against them, just ask Shura Taftwho would still be wondering how thatball bounced back over his head runninginto an open goal . The Sharks held on andrestricted their opponents to the one goal, thanks to the work of Brayden Haynesand Sherman .The premiership qtr was never moreevident with the Sharks coming out of therooms on fire slamming on 2 quick goalsto hit back in front . The Lions tried to slowthe game down and sent regular forwardBrock Mooney and Blumfield down backto try and stop the flow . The answer camein the fashion of 4 goals going over the topof the Lion defender's heads including abomb from Atkins inside the centresquare .Coach Hawkins pleaded with his chargesat orange time to believe that a win waspossible . However, any chance of acomeback was quickly put to rest as bigman Sean Coote calmly curled onethrough the sticks . The Sharks ended upoutscoring the Lions in the last qtr withanother goal to Coote and Rawlins gettingsome reward for a busy day. The defensivegame of Brayden Haynes earned him theMichael Ritterman medal for best onground. Tim Collins and Sherman alongwith Haynes formed an integral part oftheir team's backline and were the mainreason their side was kept in the game inthe first half. The Collegians pair of Roachand Holst battled hard for the entirematch .

Collegians were the best team for theseason, however it turned out thatBeaumaris were the best side in the finalsand that is when it counts .

Beaumaris would like to congratulateJustin Bryce on playing his 50th game inlast weeks Grand Final. A greatacquisition to the club on and off the field,Justin has fitted in well . Frustrated byinjuries over the past two years he hasshowed tremendous grit and determ-ination to force his way back into apremiership side . We wish him well for therest of career at Beaumaris .

LAST DRINKS

"Y feel like one

Who treads alone

Some banquet hall deserted.

Whose lights arefled

Whose garlands dead,

And all but he departedi "

Thomas Moore's bittersweet words from "The

Light of Other days", perfectly sum up a

Section Scribe's feelings as one season fades

out and another heaves into view. I write this

on Monday afternoon, & the Notting Hill

Hotel will be ringing with repeated renditions

of the Ashers' song, and every second of last

Saturday's GF will be recalled and analysed

in excruciating detail . Already, what actually

happened will have been improved upon, to

such an extent that variances between the

mental recalls and the 'video tape' replays

will be put down to dodgy camera work! So,

this Scribe 'treads alone' through the

'banquet hall deserted' of the 2003 Season

and reflects .

What stands out is, that Monash Blues andAJAX finished 8th & 7th respectively in

2002! That fact must encourage all of next

year's D1 Clubs! The Ashers & Jackas Clubs

put in a huge effort to turn their fortunes

round in 2003, and they are an example to

all, there to be emulated !

THE GRAND FINALSReservesThe early game saw the AJAX and Monash

Blues having to contend with a strong 6 goals

northerly blowing towards the Weatherall

Road end . The Jackas defence worked hard

in Q1 to deflect many Ashers attacks and

they even managed to score a goal againstthe wind . The strong Ashers defence made

life difficultthereafter, bu

t fantastic efforts byi_

Ash Goldman ,

Mart Dudakov ,Jake Sharp & Adam Zemski throughout thematch saw the Jackas take the Flag with abig Q4. The Ashers were disappointedoverall, but not with the games played byLachlan Reddingfield at HF, & Justin PeelOtB .Seniors

The main game was equally wind affected, which was a pity, but it is Melbourne &September! The Jackas had first use of thatwind and it looked as though Julian Kirznerwould give Greg Chessari a harder time thanin the 2nd Semi . Even so, scoring anythingwas never easy, with the breeze a major aidto both defences . There was little betweenthe sides as Q2 ended, but the feeling roundthe ground was that the Jackas were lookingthe better, and the Ashers were going to hav e

to try Plan B! They did, and brother, what a

turn round! Liam `Hover' Holloway made Q3

his own after switching from CHF to CHB,

where his strength at the skyside contests

gave his team mates a massive confidence

injection, and life very difficult for the Jackasforwards . Holding the Jackas goalless and

scoring 2 themselves saw the Ashers head for

the post Q3 huddle in a vastly improved fame

of mind . Phil De Young & John White had

smiles on their faces, and even perennial

worrier, Andrew Headberry, wore a cautious

half grin! Monash turned Q4 into their own,

again holding the AJAX forwards to zip goals

whilst powering ahead themselves . Once

again the strength and flexibility of the

Ashers set up and the adroit management of

it by Tim Powell had come up trumps when itreally counted . Liam Holloway was a most

worthy winner of the John Manton Medal, his

presence at contests dominating. Ryan

Turton had a point to make about being a too

frequent bench warmer, and his performance

OtB was exemplary, as also was Aaron

Williams's in the Ruck . For the Jackas, Gab

Dukes, Elliot & Aldan Wollner, Jason

Ritterman, & Nick Gold were all sensational,

but Destiny wore different colours this day !

"Who turned the lights out in this bloody

hall! , :ow do I get out of here? Help! "

by Ed SillAndrew Wu

What Ed Says :We are the boys from old Fitzroy rang out

loud and clear as the Reds held on over a

fast finishing Peninsula in a great game of

amateur football! Big crowd, spirited but fairgame, great stuff! The Reds kicked with the aid of a strong

breeze in the first stanza . The wind coupled

with Grand Final pressure caused the game

to be fairly scrappy . A great goal from Vinnie

Cahill put the Reds three goals up at the first

break . The emergence of Bowen of the bench

in the last few minutes seemed to givePeninsula a bit of a sniff and both coaches

would have been satisfied at the break .

Fitzroy threatened to blow the game open inthe first ten minutes on the second quarter .

Dawson was playing a fine opportunist role

for the Reds, scoring a goal and having a

hand in a number of others . They had

stretched the lead to more than five goals

and a rout seemed possible . The Pirates

weren't keen on this idea and were ably led

by Sam Murray who had in the same half ofthe ground after the break, a clear indicator

that Coach Sill wanted him to be where the

ball was . Murray didn't let his coach down,

goaling three times in less than 10 minutes .

Centre half forward Payze was also starting

to get a bit of the footy although the human

blanket, Todd Clarke wasn't allowing too

much latitude . A late goal to the Reds saw

the margin remain at three goals at the

major break .The Pirates started the third quarter well butthe Reds suddenly got the machine rolling! An inspirational goal from full back Cairnswas a team lifter . Ronchi was nowdominating in the ruck, giving the likes ofCahill, Diacogiorgis and Addicott first use ofthe ball out of the centre . The lead hadstretched to over 6 goals when Glen Archerlook-alike, Julian Sill, imposed himself byforming a human wall in the last five

minutes if thequarter. The leadwas stillsubstantia lhowever it was still gettable .Reds coach Graeme Burgan stressed theneed to 'push back' into defence in the lastquarter whilst Pirate coach Sill implored histeam to run, run and run! Fortune favoursthe brave, something that Burgen clearlyhad in mind when he put Diacogiorgis ontothe dangerous Murray in the last quarter.

'Dacca', a slightly older version of LukeHodge, responded to the challenge inkeeping Murray quiet . Peninsula threatenedbut always felt just out of reach . Fast

finishing but just short of the mark .Ronchi was named best on ground with the

Cahill, 'Dacca', Dawson and Clarke also

prominent . Bit harder to find for the Pirates,

Murray at his end of the ground, Dentry andTeelow battled hard whilst Sill consistently

put his body on the line for his club .

All in all, a great game of footy, well done toboth clubs and best wishes on advancing

into D1 .

What Andrew Says :Grand Final ReviewFitzroy are premiers again! After winningthe 2001 D3 premiership, the Reds onlyhad to wait two years before adding the2003 D2 trophy to the mantelpiece .

Peninsula's inability to cope with theReds' manic intensity at the ball left itfloundering during the finals . Accordingto Fitzroy coach Graham Burgen,Peninsula tried unsuccessfully tophysically attack his side last week ."They went after our blokes in the second

quarter," Burgen said ."They tried to intimidate us with our

young side but our blokes are smart so itdidn't work . "If a moment can define a football match, then Reds "balding father figure" SteveAddicott's attack at the ball on the half-forward flank deep in the second quarterwas it . In years to come at Fitzroy's 2003premiership reunions, this moment will beconstantly mentioned, reflected upon andexaggerated . Certainly nobody's idea ofMr Universe, Addicott's courageous andinspirational effort to not only win the ballfrom a contest he had little hope of gettingto, but to also leave his opponent writhingin agony resulted in his team scoring animportant goal into the wind . WhilePeninsula were only four goals behind atthis stage, it was hard to see Fitzroy losingfrom that point on .Fitzroy coach Graham Burgen agreed . At

Fitzroy's celebrations last Sunday, thismoment was replayed over and over againand greeted with cheers every time ."Everyone lifted around that," Burgen saidof Addicott's act .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2003

While Peninsula were undefeated for the

home and away season, Fitzroy's effort to

defeat the Pirates twice in a fortnight

showed that they were certainly the best

side during the finals and worthy

premiers .Although this will be cold comfort to the

Pirates, they should be applauded for

going through the home and away season

undefeated . This is a rare feat and

certainly an achievement not to be

sneezed at . While promotion to D1 will

only make it tougher for them to win apremiership, any team that can win 19

games in a season in D2 should be at least

a finals threat in Dl the following year.

But the sad reality facing Peninsula now

is that a golden opportunity to win a flag

has come and gone. Unfortunately for

them, they saved their worst football for

the most important month of the year and

now must endure an endless summer of

soul-searching and a torturous pre-

season before they get their chance toatone for their disappointing and

heartbreaking end to the season .

Peninsula didn't choke as many pundits

will suggest, but the tag of "runners-up"

will still be very hard for them to swallow .

NoteThank you to all the coaches and press

correspondents who contributed this

season. Without your assistance, this

scribe would have very little to write

about. Your contributions have been

greatly appreciated .

Heath (4gls) was akey up forward for the Scotchies while Tim Holt and RohanPrice shone .So to the OF and Old Xaverians were unbackable - (allExecutive and Administration thought so anyway) only PhilStevens and Angela Giles chose Old Scotch .In the end after a terrific first half the Xavs pulled away towin well . Simon Wood and Michael Blood wonderful all dayfor the Xavs, with Tom Wilson Scotch's best .Old Ivanhoe would take their place in A in '99 after a toughwin over Old Trinity in the B prelim. A surging last quartersaw Stuart Glascott's boys with some great work fromJarred Weddle, Brad Shadbolt (5gis) and Paul Donaldsonrun over OT - best served by courageous skipper RohanPhillips .The OF would be a thriller with Old Ivanhoe having 4 morescoring shots but failing by the barest of margins . FullbackGus Seabury and Glenn Cox were the Eagles best in whatonly can be described as a thrilling win .The shortest priced C Section favourite for a long time wentdown in a shock when Beaumaris, who had only lost twogames all year, went down by five points to Hampton Roverswho were really on a roll . The Rovers would win all threefinals including the GF with Hobson, Browne and Powertheir best . For the Sharks Sherman and Andrew Quinbattled hard.Whitefriars took control of their game against Southbank inD after half-time . Power, Pawlik and Jongebloed greatFriars (the first two still going strong in 2003) . Morgan andMcNamara good triers for the vanquished Bankers .U19 Premiers : Section 1 Old Xaverians over Be La Salle,Section 2 Old Scotch over Whitefriars, MHSOB overHampton Rovers & Yarra Valley over Old Ivanhoe .The umpires farewelled Mark Bushy" Bushfield who retiredafter umpiring his 15 OF. !In an unequalled form reversal, Oki Xaverians avengedtheir second semi 96 point defeat by North Old Boys whenthey controlled the A Section grand Final throughout to winby 18 points, 15 .21 to 13.15 . Nick Burne continued hisgreat form at full forward with 5 goals while StephenCurtain also contributed 3 and was a great performeraround the ground . The best player on the ground was OldXaverians captain John Noonan, who rucked strongly allday. A tightknit Old Xaverians defence shut out North'ssemi final star, Shane Maguire . Others to play well for OldXaverians were Vale, Atkinson and Carmody. Old Xaveriansjoined the select band of clubs which had won B&A sectionpremierships in successive years . Old Xaverian's only other

Collegians win their second successive 'A' Sectionpremiership in a Grand Final played under shockingconditions . Old Scotch's position appeared hopeless, threegoals behind with 15 minutes to play . Then Old Seotehquickly added two goals but Collegians' defenders stoodfirm and they won by a goal. 'Old Paradians turned the tables on University Blacks in 'B'Section . Parade led by 6 goals in the first term, only to seeBlacks fight back and lead narrowly at the interval . Paradeagain took another good lead in the third quarter andmaintained their advantage until the finish .De La Salle confirmed their second semi-final victory whenthey again defeated Parkside . 6 .12 to 5 .8 to take out the CSection Premiership in their first year in the grade, aperformance that earns the team the right of record.

Well, we've come to the conclusion of anothe rterrific season of D3 football, and it must be saidthat the most deserving team got their just rewardsfor their efforts this year.On to the Grand Final review. . .Favourites Swinburne got a useful break on theunderdog Monash G ryphons early, establishing aquarter time lead of just over three goals, withhighlights including a brilliant banana goal fromthe boundary by the peerless Jason Murchie .The Razorbacks increased their lead slightly in thesecond quarter, and indeed were more than double

Monash's score, but the Grvphs must have stillfancied their chances for the second half of the

match .However, those thoughts must have quickly turnedto dust as the minor premiers scored six goals tonone in the third quarter, despite Fidler missingmost of this period due to cramp . The Gryphonsdefence battled manfully under this onslaught, butwere not able to get the support they needed on thescoreboard .It was a similar story in the last quarter asSwinburne scored four goals nine behinds to twopoints in the final stanza . The Swinny defence,

marshalled by the talented and controversialSimon Fragiacomo, were superb throughout the

game .Adrian . Fidler, one of my favourite players in thecomp this year was a deserving winner of the VicZanin medal for Best On Ground, while the likes ofSam Eager and Matthew Whiting continued their

good form from a fortnight ago . Jason Murchie had

an "average" (in the statistical sense) game, kicking

six goals . Other performers of note includedmidfielder/forward Richard Roberts and Anthony

Fricke, who started the game on the bench .

For the Gryphs, perhaps not that surprisingly, their best contributors were mainly backmen, including the likes of Lee Wells, Brett Coxhead, the

classy Dan Baxter and Jono Watson, withmidfielders Adrian Flowerday and Tim Gilchrist

also useful .I must acknowledge both teams efforts on gainingpromotion to D2 next season. Congratulations to

36

Swinburne coach DerekTheone and skipper TonyAlbert on claiming the big prize this year, while I'msure Monash counterparts Jack McDonald andSteve Bourbon have already started planning onhow to go one better . Both sides seem to have areasonable foundation to at least consolidate theirposition in the higher grade next year, but will, Iimagine, strive to improve on their current stocksto make a genuine impact in 2004 .In the reserves, Werribee defeated Rupertswood by78 points to claim the reserves' flag. Well done

lads .SEASON REVIEWObviously, Swinburne will have the most to be

please about . Winning all but two games (droppedin consective weeks straight after the half waymark of the season) and then scoring a crushingvictory in the Grand Final is as good a season as

most teams can expect .Monash Gryphons would have been disappointedby the conclusion of their season, but can takeheart in the fact that they exceeded most people'sexpectations, especially after avoid relegation to D4in the last round in 2002 .

Rupertswood's upward momentum propelledthem from D4 Premiers in 2002 into the finals inD3 this season, and, if not for a heartbreaking goalconceded with 20 seconds left in the preliminaryfinal, would have been promoted again . Watch forthem in 2004 .South Melbourne Districts managed to reach thefinals this season after spending the last couple ofseasons having a solid first 12 or so rounds beforefading away come crunchtime. They have someterrific youngsters and should be in contentionnext season .Werribee Amateurs, Syndal Tally Ho and I'owei

House all ended up on eight wins, albeit their

respective journeys to this result were markedly

contrasted . Werribee were in the mix early, withthe Synners solid while the Piranhas were

struggling. Later on it was Power House's turn toshine while the Tigers and Svndal fell away as the

finishing line drew closer . Hard to read based onoverall form for this season, but they should dowell enough to avoid relegation, and at least one ofthese teams should threaten for the finals .

Finally, St. John's Old Coll egians, Kew an d

Elsternwick round off the review. The Jocs only

managed to ensure their survival in D3 on the lastday of the season, defeating Kew, and condemning

the latter to D4 for next season . It is baffling thata team with a percentage of over 100, and fourth

best overall, struggled in the relegation muck all

year . A key factor was losing five or six games byless than a goal, and arguably perhaps theiroverhaul of playing personnel . A lot of these guys

are young, and should be better with a year ofsenior footy under their belts. Kew, the vanquished

team in that match, have now suffered twoconsecutive relegations, and are a district clubbattling to recruit kids in a private school

heartland . There is the possibility of bouncing

straight up if they can perhaps get some of theseguys who aren't getting a go elsewhere . As for

Elsternwick, the writing on the wall was there

quite early on . Although they have a classy core,

their quality of depth is lacking, and their majorpredicament seems to be similar to that of Kew .

Therefore a solution would also be similar .

TEAM OF THE YEARA couple of caveats before the team is read . Firstly,I have included eight on the bench to minimise thepossibility of a club v . country row (albeit in amicro sense) a la Sven-Goran Erikkson v . ArseneWenger/Sir Alex Ferguson etc . (or should that beDerek Theone, Jack McDonald, etc .?) . Also, assome correspondents were more diligent thanothers, those of whom I'm aware were starperformers but unaware of where they played Ieither guessed or put on the bench, and in one ortwo cases, a bloke I knew could play anywhere Imay have put in an unfamiliar position. Hopefully

that way, people will be more encouraged torespond next season . Anyway, here is the team :

Competition is still keen in the popular clubcompetition where if one of a club's two entriescorrectly forecast the winners of all sevensenior section premierships, that club (if itwas the only club to do so) would win $ 10,000in the Sportscover sponsored Pick thePremiers competition .

No entry did this but the $1,000 consolationprize is still open to a number of entries, with

two(2) results still to be determined (A and Bsection) .

Ormond and Bentleigh are the favourites on

Mentonians and Beaumaris both on 3, haveall selected St . Bernards as their chance for a

winning selection number 4; Bentieigh. (theirsecond entry) is on 2 and has nominated St .Bernards and Whitefriars this weekend. In

case of more than one club ending up with the

same number of selections the teamsnominated as the GF runner-up in each of

their correct selections will be used todetermine the winner on countback.

If no decision still then . . . . the editor of this

Howard had nominated theElliott brothers, Richard (275), John (250)and Ross (160) . Jack White had 5 sons whoplayed for St Kilda CBOC in the period 1961 to1985 - Kevin (Ox) played 326, John 301, Ian157, Terry 88 and Bruce 72 for a magnificenttotal of 944 . "Alf' from Alphington informs usthat the Harris brothers totalled 1,004 VAFAmatches - Keith 274, Peter 416, Bruce 53 andIan 261 .

SPORTS BOOK3

Exhilaration of Victory or the Despair

of DefeatWe all look towards coaching a

Premiership and back in February we all

think we are going to be their but out of

215 teams, only 22 will make it and only

11 will hold the cup aloft .

As coaches we have our responsibilities to

prepare players every week but on the last

day of the season we have a bit more

responsibility as the next 2hrs will decide

who has the Exhilaration of Victory or

the Despair of Defeat and none of use

want to experience the later, but some of

us will .We are a rare breed that allows this game

to take over our lives for the exhilaration

of a final siren on that last day with our

team in front which lasts around 20sec

and then the sharing of the moment takes

over with people that will give you

friendships for life that we all never forget .

We do all the things prior to this game

that we instruct our players not to . . .play

the game in our head several times over,

look at the match ups and plan the what if

scenario's no matter how negative that

may be, worry about how we plan our

preparation on the day, analyse how the

opposition could beat us, analyse what

players need special attention on the day

and through the week at training, make

sure the process is correct on Grand Final

week and all you ask of a player is to go

out and play the best game of his life but

A .RC. . V.A.F.A .

"Your Coaches' Association "

you know not all of them are capable ofdoing that at the one time, only on veryspecial occasion sNot many coaches would have commenced

any new projects or taken on too much

during this week at work as footy will have

consumed them, regardless how they trj

to get a break from it . You will have

workmates discussing it, family, brother :

and mates wanting to know how you thinl

it is going to go and even those who reall,

do not follow footy want to know sc

escaping the week is impossible .

All of those scenario's come into play anc

it is a tough week for coaches involved ii

Grand Finals but we are a strange breei

and no coach would trade that fo

anything for as weird as it may seem tha

30 sec Exhilaration of Victory at th

final siren is unique and some say uniqu

to our game .

The aftermath for the winner is week

sometimes months of great moments an

for the losers players recover quicker tha

coaches but the knot still remains fc

months and in some cases until you ge

another chance, if in fact you do gf

another chance . . . . . . . . .many players an

coaches never get another chance !

Take the moment when it present

itself.
