MR CONSISTENCYIts a funny thing. When Brett O'Farrell played league footballhe couldn't shake the ghosts of the medical room, runninginto more injuries than a bung-eyed boxer and watching hisgame suffer as a consequence. The big man had no luck. Hewas delisted at the end of the year, and there was a sad ringto the parting. O'Farrell, a Prahran under-18 player who wastaken by Sydney in the draft, had been earmarked for bigthings at Glenferrie Oval . But O'Farrell, hands tied because ofreoccurring ailments, never delivered on his massive promise .Never had the fitness to do so .

The funny thing is that O'Farrell . now 25, has been as reliable

as a grandfather's clock in our competition this year .

Opposition coaches have conceded it is one mighty job to findthe right man to silence him . And it doesri t help that he

spends equal measures of time in the ruck and in the forwardline. It is a rare week that he doesn't figure as one of theleading goalkickers for Old Haileybury, or, for that matter, is

listed in the best players.

O'Farrell is thriving at his old school . There was a fair bit oftalk about when he left the AFL, with rumours linking him to

every second suburban club. But to O'Farrell, now a Channel

Seven sports reporter, it was a simple choice . The fact that he

now manages to string together games rather than quarters isa bonus. "Once I finished at the top level I just wanted to getback and play with my mates, get the enjoyment back infooty," O'Farrell says . "I sort of lost it a bit and I've just foundit again, playing with my mates .

"I couldn't get on the field, which got a bit annoying, but I'verun into bit of luck now, putting some games together .

"It's a great comp, I mean it's high standard. But it alwaystakes a while getting used to, the difference of the speed of thegame and that sort of thing . "There's not that muchdifference, to be honest . I suppose the higher you go it's thespeed of the game. The actual skills are the same - obviouslyif you train 9am to 5pm like the top clubs do there going tobe a little bit better - but the main difference is the speed ofthe game . "Even the difference between B grade and A grade- the speed's gone up again this year."

TODAYWe trust there is a sense of relief among the University Blues ,who cracked their first win for the year against Old Trinitylast weekend . DeCrispigny delighted with seven goals. half ofhis side's total. But the Blues have been handed scant time tocelebrate : they now face reigning champion St Bernards andwill need to lift further to be in with a sniff. The Beratespulverised St Kevins with a surprisingly comfortable win lastweek and will be unbackable despite playing away . OldHaileybury was chuffed after beating Old Melburnians in arematch of last vear's Grand Final at Junction Oval, and

tenacious Adam Flovdfinished with five goalsafter a fine day. Nippyhackman ScottGoldsworthy was theman of the match .

Old Haileybury is up against Old Trinity today and on formit is impossible to have Old Trinity . Old bielburnians and OldScotch are both seeking to expand on their win columns a- ..close losses to top-liners . Old Scotch spearhead Lu'Hawkins is in super form and will take minding. Match of tt,round . St Kevins . beaten like a drum by the Bernies, pla ;:the formidable Old Xaverlans in this week's game at VA',;headquarters . The Kevs have shown enough this year towarrant supporters bringing a few crumbs of hope to thegame, but the Xavs deserve massive favouritism after anothertop display from Damien Orlando . And Old Ivanhoecontinues its search for those elusive first pennant poin

t againstMarce llin to finish the round . They may need anothe rweek or so to find them . Old Ivanhoe was blown away in thelast 10 minutes against the Xavs after being competitive for

most of the game. The usual suspects - John Stevens tried hisheart out and was everywhere, Toovey in the forward line andWeddle in the ruck - did their bit but the gun is pointed to thismob's head . What's worse. Marcellin's forward line is white•hot, with Peter Spence, Darryl Mason and captain AndrewTreganowan slotting 16 between them last week.

I have been watching a variety of VAFA gan. ::

the past month from D4 to A Section . Now th:

an impartial observer, I have been able to sit bcand just enjoy the game, and some of them hs

been just great games to watch . There is som e

that really appeals to me about V,-zFA footy. T: _

genuine passion of each club ; the good-natured

barracking, often very humorous and clever ;

occasionally a self-appointed expert in the crowdmaking an idiot out of himself; and fortunately, on

much rarer occasions, some abusive, bordering onobscene language. The last part is unnecessary andnot to be encouraged but is part of the kaleidoscopethat makes up the crowd at any amateur game on

any weekend all over Melbourne .

Being a former coach of many years, I find Iinevitably watch a game through the eyes of a coach.

I have looked closely at some of the tactics andstrategies that coaching panels employ in amateurgames . The most puzzling question that crosses my

mind as I watch is : Why do VAFA teams try to use a

Defensive Zone on kick-ins ?

I am at loss to try to understand the motive behindthis very common strategy? Yet I find the majority of

tear- e .- --~ :- it, and have been doing so for thepast 7- 00 ye : ~ . I am sure most coaches would beevaluating le effectiveness of this strategy butunless I am missing something, not one game I haveseen this year has resulted in a consistent positivereturn for the zoning team .

In fact, quite the opposite is true . Teams areregularly surrendering the next possession to the

team with the football . Therefore, instead of havingto kick out into play from the goal square, kicking side consistently have the next kick fsome spot further into play . It all depends on ht

and t'se ' 'c'r i- as `a how far into play thatncleapo: : . sion is . who? Surely VAFA coaches are

The ~ ''s ` : , sss~,~ ` Pofl_~! y helps produceclean football . We believe that the game should beplayed in a free flowing manner where the mostskilled or those able to team the better will prevail .We believe tactics that impede, obstruct, interferewith or invade others' personal space not betolerated and those who engage in these tacticsare reported for misconduct .

Many say the key to our successes is our strongAlcohol Policy . The VAFA Executive has alwaysfelt there is a strong link between unruly spectatorbehaviour and consumption of alcohol, hence thegreat rule prohibiting the consumption of alcoholbetween the start of games and the end of play forthe day .

As stated any club can request an investigationinto a matter that is believed to have been outsidethe laws of the game or has contributed to mentalor physical pain . Minor infractions will see theVAFA offer the choice of a minor fine should theoffender /offending club agree the offence waswrong, or alternatively offer the offender /offendingclub the opportunity of defending the allegationthrough the investigation process .

These, and many more situations . allow ourcompetition to operate in a safe environment, withmechanisms in place to deal with those who takeit on themselves to bring the game, their club andthemselves into disrepute .

against Yarra Valley Old Boys . BJ played a

great game in the ruck and kicked 5 goals for

many more . Great start to the season from the

'smart fella' . Well done BJ! . Also we would like

to congratulate Nlaa°' "''-a 1' (for get trying tospell the last name) for playing his 50 fh gameagainst Yarra Valley Old boys . 'Yakka' has

Says :The two most interesting results coming from round5 was the La Trobe win over Fit= , teds whilst

rebound from a drubbing of last week . The Westieshave tanen the step up with aplomb and withSiebrand proving to be a headache for hackman, they should hold on .

Fancy an upset when La Trobe takes on ladderleaders Peninsula . Latrobe's first few steps were abit uncertain however they are now showing somefine form . Not off Peninsula's bandwagon butpossible a loss is looming .

Fantastic --me as Fitzroy host Old Carey. GlenTavlor's team had a slow start to the season but thelast few ~ s have been kicking the sweep . TheReds are in the middle of a mini slump . Tough one1 sre, in _)e Old Carev .

11 be looking to rebound against Old"Playing the kids" is the call fro m

Oa' ' ( ' ;h and no doubt the perseverance will pay offin the long run however Geelong should be able tomake it 2 in a row .

Finall" o travel to :aa with thehome team no doubt keen to show their solid homeground form is no fluke. Peter Tyson must be niingrunning over that black cat injury wise and it ishard to see the Hawks beating Willy ,

had a "disastrous" day last weekend .hew Says:

Bentleigh coach Paul Dimattina said that it was theworst loss that he had suffered in 15 years ofcoaching . He criticized his team for beingunaccountable, being led to the ball and losing toomany 50/50 contests . Whether they defeat WestBrunswick or not, Dimattina is certain that histeam will put in a better performance this week .

Second placed West Brunswick recovered fromtheir fright against Hawthorn to post a much moreauthoritative win against Oakleigh last week . TheDemons' horrific run with injury gives the Magpiesa tremendous opportuni',r record their fifth

consecutive win .

The all conquering

Peninsula can il lafford to lose theirMelways this week, as they make one of the longes-road trips in amateur football to face ha ; - _- ; . L aTrobe will be very confident after they narrowlydefeated Fitzroy in arguably the biggest upset of theyear so far. The long road trip and La Trobe'simproved form makes this a "danger game" for thePirates .

t3ak1e'igh coach Chris Moore will persevere with hisyoungsters regardless of how heavily they lose thisyear. This year, he has already blooded 12 U19'splayers .

"From a future point of view, we're on the rightline," he said . "if we have a system in place then wecan take relegation .- Youngsters Ashley Kitts,Shane Collins and Liam Kennedy are three-Kindergarten Krushers" who have performed withaplomb this year.

Old Geelong coach Michael Lockman is not gettingcarried away with his side's thrashing of Haw-thorn .He has challenged his team to win consecutivegames, a feat that has not been achieved by theclub for a few years now.

,,y games - all on big grounds - this seasonverage margin of 105 points . Williamstown

Ilant in defeat last weekend but coach Dene

will not be as tolerant of a loss this week .

~,, i,t c lll have them back in the four, a loss will

diem back with the pack . The winless HawksI1 led in the last quarter of each of their hom e

,u::ies and will cause troubles for the CYMS .

This week's match of the round features two likely

finalists for this year : the rebounding Fitzroy and

the rampant Old Carey . The Reds have lost theirlast two games and were extremely disappointing

against La Trobe . Fitzroy coach Graham Burgen

questioned the commitment of some of his playersand will be eager to see his team display more

mettle this weekend .

Old Carey has kicked 92 goals in three weeks butwill be hard pressed to continue their scoring spree

this week . Coach Glenn Taylor is looking forwardto the challenge of defeating Fitzroy, a side that hischarges could not defeat last year.

The students will be hoping to get back onto theinner's list against a refreshed Bulleen. The Cobras

have been improving each match and should not bewritten off in today's game, however, the class of theVultures runners id the dominance of Tate upforward ill be too hard counter. Therefore, I amgoing fc ;our Voal in to U-i Hi-h .BE v :The Saints hit the road for the first time this season, and in, find the unfamiliar surrounding ofBrunswick difficult . Brunswick, still looking to breakthe duck, will be hard pressed though to match thelikes of Jedda Wright and Francis Harrison and withAllen, Buyer and Schembri all doing well upfor =rard, I' .ink the Saints .ill keep their top five,,or : i a 29 point victc -~.- .
