Box 57 Colonial Heights, VA 23834 Non-Profit Org. U.S. Postage Paid Permit No. 12 Colonial Heights, VA 23834 Return Service Requested Fellow Legionnaires, This is the last message you will be getting from me as Commander. On June 14, Vice Commander John Woyansky takes command of, in my opinion, the most productive and essential post of the American Legion Department of Virginia. With his continued support from you, the post officers, and Executive Committee, I have no doubt we will continue to be a vital service for Veterans and an important part of the community. Please remember though, we cannot survive without our fundraisers (primarily Bingo) to pay the bills of the post’s utilities, maintenance and give to the needy. It is extreme- ly important to have members volunteer a couple of hours a month (or whatever you think your schedule permits), to make these fundraisers successful. Last month Post 284 donated over $11,000 to veterans and community programs. The community and local veterans are better off this month because of the efforts of those volunteers who helped out. I am sad to report the passing of eight-year member and Korean War Army Veteran Lewis E, Ford. Please keep their families in your prayers. The VA & Rehabilitation Chairman position is still available. Please call me at 804-218-1198 if you’re interested. Please sign up to get Post 284 updates and reminders texted to you. Text to phone number 33-222 the following: Post284. If you are interested in Bingo updates text Bingo284. That’s all there is to it. Thanks to our Membership Chairman Bret Bordwell for making this system available. Thanks to all who helped make the 2017-2018 year at American Legion Post 284 a successful one. I have learned a lot about the post and about giving. When I thought I was giving enough time and effort to the post and the community, I would see people like Linwood Moore, George Ahrend, Bill Feasenmyer, Rick Oertel, Craig Marsh or Jim Althouse (JUST TO NAME A FEW) on their way to volunteer again. Then I would realize what I did was really not that much, after all. I am honored to have served as your Commander and I will continue to do my best to help out when I can. Have a safe month of June, and a blessed year 2018. William B. - MEMBERSHIP - Greetings Legionaries, Thank you and a Shout Out to George Hankin, Randall

Grenier, Jerry Chenault and Lou Vallette for recruiting

new members. Just when it looks like I’m going to re-

port a ‘Goose Egg’ for new members, these guys save

the day. We are at 98% of our 2018 membership goals for the

year. That’s official numbers, actually, we are at 99%,

but as of this writing, those new members haven’t

been processed by Department yet. We are very close

to reaching 100% for the year. With the five I have

pending today; I now need less than 10 to hit our goal.

I need your help to hit 100%. June is the last month

left to pull this off. We start the 2019 Fiscal Year in

July and kick off Early Bird renewals at the 4th of July

Picnic. John Woyanski and I attended the Fort Clifton Arts

and Crafts Show in Colonial Heights on Mother’s Day

weekend. Bill Shill and Jerry Chenault assisted. Alf

Harper joined us for both days and is responsible for

recruiting two new members and one solid lead who

will eventually join. If you haven’t recruited a new

member lately, you may want to consider joining us at

one of these events and help us for a few hours. I’m currently working on a way to get leads that are

not ready to commit, an incentive to show up at the

post after they ‘Think About it.’ More to follow on

this plan will be in my next article for the News and

Views. The “Mobile Alerts,” I mentioned earlier is active. I

highly recommend joining this service by texting

“POST284” to 33-222. It’s free, and we plan to only

send about two messages per month. Renew online at www.Legion.org/renew. It’s fast; it’s

easy, and you can do it from your Smart Phone. Respectfully, Bret O. Bordwell American Legion Post 284 Membership Chairman [email protected] 804.712.8308 (text friendly)

- SAL SQUADRON 284 -

May was a month where your SAL at 284 conducted the

annual Law and Order Banquet. We recognized and award-

ed the Colonial Heights Police Officer of the Year, The

Deputy of the Year, The Firefighter of the Year, and the

Dispatcher of the Year. In addition, the State Trooper of the

Year for our area was recognized. This is a wonderful pro-

gram and I am proud to say this year was our 10th annual.

All the participants and families enjoyed the banquet and

awards ceremony. It was an honor to have Tommy Lee

Department Commander and his wife with us, as well as

Willie Morgan, the Commander of the SAL Detachment of

Virginia and Robert Wilson our Detachment Chaplain. The

ALA Department President, Cheryl Shine and her husband

joined us as well. It was a great night for Colonial Heights

and for Post 284. A special thanks to Linwood Moore.

Linwood started this night ten years ago; and it develops

more each year.

The SAL will be cooking breakfast Sunday AM June 17 for

the Post 284 Girls, Boys, and their parents as we send them

off to Boys State and Girls State.

The SAL at 284 is providing four, $250.00 scholarships to

graduating seniors – two from Colonial Heights High

School, and two from Thomas Dale High School.

June will see new SAL Officer’s installed for the 2018-2019

year. Officers for next year are Jeff Lee, 2nd Vice Com-

mander; Mike Nauseff, 1st Vice Commander; and Joe Gal-

lagher, Commander.

I would like to thank the tireless efforts of the officers this

past year. We reached over 100% in membership goals by

March 1 and it continues to grow. A big thank you goes to

Mike Latham our 1st Vice Commander this past year and

Membership Chair.

June 14th is Flag Day; and we will put out flags along the

Boulevard. We encourage all members to fly the beautiful

symbol of our country. It is a privilege to be an American

and we as a family know full well who to thank for those

freedoms.

With summer upon us and new year

about to begin, let’s remember why

we do what we do, and the positive

impact we have on so many people.

- BUILDING & GROUNDS -

April showers bring...May showers! Got a pic at the last moment of swift creek behind the Legion as we were preparing for our June post clean-up. We will be priming the railings and seats on the deck...see pictures! Ok, after you see the creek, re-member that at the clean-up, we will have paint, brushes and drop clothes—we just need YOU! May's clean-up saw five members helping; three were building and grounds guys, Tommy Zadick and the Post Commander! We washed the building, ramp and paid a lot of attention to the deck. Saturday June 9th we need hands on brushes! We will start at 8:30am and prime until 11 or 12. If you can't paint, come on out and cheer us on! Let’s be a true family and see some of every part of our family. Michael Latham 804-835-3299c [email protected] Building & Grounds Chairman Post 284 SAL 1st Vice Commander/Membership 2017/2018

On-line registration for the American Legion Department of Virginia Convention is now available at

www.valegion.org. The convention starts July 13 and ends July 16 at the Dulles Hilton Hotel.

If the Legion Van is needed contact John Ronkartz at 804-586-5827. Besides making mileage entries in

the mileage log book, the driver must do the inspection of the van in accordance with the inspection sheet

located in the mileage log book. Just two or three hours on a Monday or Friday night will do it, 5:00 – 7:00 or 7:00 – 10:00. Helping out at

bingo is not that hard, and you get great satisfaction out of knowing you have helped a veteran or their

family with the money you helped raise. This year bingo allowed us to donate over $85,000 to the welfare

of children and youth programs. It’s a great group of people to work with and you can get a free meal be-

fore or after the session begins. You can cook, work the counter, make sandwiches in the kitchen, sit down

and sell bingo sheets or walk the floor and sell instant pull tab tickets. Contact me or Linwood Moore if

you can spare a couple of hours a month.

American Legion Baseball begins June 23, so come out and cheer on our Post 284 Bucs. A renovation to

Shepard Stadium is complete and provides more comfortable seating for handicapped spectators.

- FROM THE COMMANDER -

Approaching the Dais (The front table):

Members should salute the colors when approaching the

front of the hall and Members approaching the dais should

enter on the left side near the National Flag, salute the col-

ors and exit on the right side, if feasible.

Members approaching the front of the hall to address the

audience should salute the colors when coming forward

and leaving.

Breaking the Field:

Imagine an invisible line between the flag of our nation at

one end of the dais and the National, Department, District,

or Post flag on the other end. This is considered a field of

honor in memory of our departed comrades. It is not con-

sidered honorable to reach across this field. Members

should avoid “breaking the field” to give items to persons

on the other side of the field when approaching the dais

from the floor.

SOUTHERN VIRGINIA CHAPTER OF

THE AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS

Greetings to All,

Well even though the weather still is very unpredictable, the SVALR still stayed very busy this month.

May 1st, the SVALR participated in the Annual Law Enforcement-First Responders’ dinner at Post 284. Thanks to

all who were able to attend and help.

April 21st was the Honor Flight Historic Triangle where some of the Riders escorted WWII Veterans to Washing-

ton D.C. This is one of the most rewarding escorts we participate in, as it is an honor to meet, talk and spend time

with these World War II Veterans. On May 6th a few faired the rainy weather and road to the ALR installation of a

new charter at Beaverdam Post 90. On the May 19th, Stafford Post 290 will also have an ALR charter starting.

Memorial Day is around the corner and that weekend is packed. We have Rolling Thunder’s “Run to Thunder” on

May 25th thru May 27th 2018 and we end our weekend with the Wreath laying on Monday the 28th at the Colonial

Heights War Memorial.

A quick reminder to all riders, our meeting will be at the Bike Clinic. Hope to see you all on June 2nd at 2:00pm.

As always, don’t forget to come to the Topside on Friday nights for the American Legion Riders Queen of Hearts

from 5-7pm.

Lastly, please check out the latest ride schedule as it is always being updated. Until next month, enjoy the open

road and ride safe. . Carlton Drummond, Director SVALR

It’s a great feeling seeing how the disabled and handicapped Veterans respond to our visits to McGuire VA Hospital get

them to the Chapels’ service. Try to imagine knowing you will spend the rest of your life in a Hospital. It’s no wonder

a visit from the Post 284 volunteers to get

These volunteers meet at the Legion Hall on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays for breakfast at 8:00 AM (Chefs Tony Reagan

or Howard Perross usually cook) and take the Post 284 Van to the hospital (it leaves about 9:00 AM).

interested in the International Dinner contact Mike Latham at [email protected] or John Woyansky at
