My first book “If It Takes a Village, Build One: How I Found Meaning Through a Life of Service and 100+ Ways
You Can Too” is being published by Broadway Books and will hit stands on April 6, 2010! I am so excited
to share my life in service and pertinent information on how you can live a life of service too.
This is how we describe the book: Part memoir, part practical guide, If It Takes a
Village, Build One offers readers insightful advice on everything from how to find just the
right volunteer opportunity, how to get kids involved in a life of service, how to research
charities, how to advocate for a cause, and even how to start a nonprofit, as Malaak did
several years ago. All of this practical wisdom is grounded in inspirational anecdotes
about her own experience with service, including her work rebuilding after Hurricane
Katrina and her recent brainchild, Journey for Change: Empowering Youth Through
Global Service, a program for at-risk kids from Brooklyn, New York which takes teens
on a two week service mission to South Africa to volunteer and experience the world.
This is a book for everyone and we certainly hope you will help to make a book
on service a big hit! In fact, one way that you can do so is to pre-order it

Water 1st’s mission is to serve
families in the poorest communi-
ties in the world as they implement
community-managed projects that
integrate water supply, sanitation,
and health education. Water 1st
envisions a world free of extreme
poverty. Providing people with safe
water systems, latrines, and hy-
giene education is the 1st step to
ending the cycle of poverty and
death.
Why Water 1st? The lack of ac-
cess to safe drinking water and
sanitary latrines is the top public
health problem in the world and
the number-one killer of chil-
dren in the world. Lack of ac-
cess to clean water has a devas-
tating effect on women and girls
who are traditionally responsi-
ble for water collection. Water
1st wants to unite people to
fight this worldwide, silent ca-
tastrophe. We believe the global
water crisis will be solved when
we build a community of con-
cerned individuals and motivate
and mobilize them to take sim-
ple, effective actions. People
living in extreme poverty have
many needs, but we believe wa-
ter comes 1st. Through provi-
sion of sustainable water, sanita-
tion, and health projects, our
goal is to address the most fun-
damental issues of childhood
death, poverty and gender equal-
ity.

With Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn as our guides, we undertake an odyssey through Africa and Asia to
meet the extraordinary women struggling there, among them a Cambodian teenager sold into sex slavery and an Ethiopian woman
who suffered devastating injuries in childbirth. Drawing on the breadth of their combined reporting experience,
Kristof and WuDunn depict our world with anger, sadness, clarity, and, ultimately, hope. They show how a little
help can transform the lives of women and girls abroad. That Cambodian girl eventually escaped from her
brothel and, with assistance from an aid group, built a thriving retail business that supports her family. The
Ethiopian woman had her injuries repaired and in time became a surgeon. A Zimbabwean mother of five, coun-
seled to return to school, earned her doctorate and became an expert on AIDS. Through these stories, Kristof
and WuDunn help us see that the key to economic progress lies in unleashing women's potential. They make
clear how so many people have helped to do just that, and how we can each do our part. Throughout much of
the world, the greatest unexploited economic resource is the female half of the population.

Globe Aware develops short-term volunteer programs in international environments that encourage people to immerse themselves in a unique way of giving back. Every activity is intended to accomplish one of two things: promote cultural awareness and/or promote sustainability. The concept of cultural awareness means to recognize and appreciate the real beauties and real chal-lenges of a culture, but not to change it. The concept of sustainability is to help others stand on their own two feet; to teach skills rather than reliance. Chosen projects meet several key crite-ria: safe, culturally interesting, genuinely beneficial to a needy community, and involve significant interaction with the host community. www.globeaware.com
Global Volunteers is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian, non-governmental organization engaging short-term volunteers on micro-economic and human development programs in close partnership with local people worldwide. Working at the invi-
tation and under the direction of local leaders, volunteers help create a foundation for world peace through mutual international understanding. Our purpose is to maintain a genuine, sustained service partnership with the host community and provide volunteers a genuine opportunity to serve. www.globalvolunteers.org
