Thoughts from Your Senior Warden …

Every Christian is chosen, called, and summoned to a vocation and moment that no other person can fill, though every calling is woven into the complex web of the Church’s being. We are members of one another, and yet every member has something, was given something, a gift of great value, hidden from all others. A lot falls upon every baptized person. We do not choose Jesus; he chooses us. He calls us and sets before us good works to walk in, whether in matters grave and small, in risk and danger or love and devotion. He calls us and gives us a life worth living, a life worth fighting for. To be a Christian is to know that an irrevocable lot has fallen on us, not by the cold hand of fate but by the heat of total and everlasting love. The passing of two long time members of our congregation and my unfamiliarity with the Memorial Garden process has brought to light the need for a document or brochure that explains everything and can be given to family members to make decisions about services and the internment in the columbarium. The change from ATT to Comcast to get higher speed service at lower cost is taking longer than expected. However, they are not charging us a very hefty connection fee and thus the delay should be tolerated. We (Allie) are sending monthly cards to a list of absent members. Phone calls are also added for a more personal touch. The Church grounds are looking fantastic, thanks to the leadership by Craig and the tremendous support by so many volunteers. We are getting quotes from several cleaning services to clean not only the church, but also the office and parish hall. The current service seems to only do a superficial job. The change would increase the expense and a proposal by Stephanie is to have us (volunteers) clean on a designated cleaning day. We should discuss this. You Senior Warden, Al Ragl

The 2nd 'Art At Advent' was held on February 16th and was attended by 6 fabulous artists. An array of oil, acrylic and water color paintings were available for sale

as well as beautiful jewelry made by our former Parish Administrator, Laura Hackney. A highlight of the day was a surprise visit by our Bishop, the Right Rev. Peter Eaton.

Thank you to our artists and all who attended this enjoyable event!

The Sunday that is seven weeks (50 days) after Easter Day is the Feast of Pentecost.

Pentecost is the is the day on which we remember the story given to us in the

second chapter of the Book of Acts.

The story goes:

40 days after the resurrection (which we celebrate at Easter) Jesus ascends into heaven (which we

celebrate on Ascension Day). But before he ascends, Jesus promises that he will not leave us

“comfortless”, but will send the Holy Spirit to strengthen and to guide us, to guide the church. Ten

days later, on the Day of Pentecost, Holy Spirit descended on the people gathered. (note: Pentecost is

an ancient Jewish festival of the harvest, the name of which translates from the Hebrew as The Festival of Weeks. This festival

is referred to in Exodus chapters 23 ad 34, and in Deuteronomy chapter 16.)

In the Book of Acts, the story is told:

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from

heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven

tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other

languages, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under

heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard

them speak in his own language.

So, on The Day of Pentecost in the church year, fifty days of

Easter and ten days after the Ascension, the clergy

wear RED vestments to signify the work of the Spirit. It is also a

custom for the people in the congregation to wear RED on the

Day of Pentecost as well. We wear RED to remind us of the fire

of the Spirt. In addition, a congregation with many dressed

in RED is colorful. And perhaps most of all, it is fun.

Church of the Advent celebrates the service of Rick Harrington as Junior Warden, Ande Bauzen-berger as Vestry Member and Nancy Junk as Senior Warden.

Bogo usually means buy one, get one free. But at Church of the Advent it means buy one, GIVE one! Please place items in the special baskets in the Narthex and they will be donated to LAHIA or House of Hope to feed the homeless and those in need.
