GATHERING IN GOD'S NAME

1 Sentences of Scripture.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1.3

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise! Revelation 5.12

Offt Open our lips, O Lord, and we shall declare your praise.

This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us: so let us celebrate the feast, Not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

3 Christ once raised from the dead dies no more: Death has no more dominion over him. In dying he died to sin once for all: in living he lives to God.

4 See yourselves therefore as dead to sin: and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ has been raised from the dead: the firstfruits of those who sleep.

5 For as by one man came death: by another has come also the resurrection of the dead; For as in Adam all die: even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit: as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

Confession

Friends in Christ, as we join together to meet with God, we take our part in the building up of his Church. As we lift up our hearts in thanks and praise, we will hear from God's holy word, we will pray for this world, for each other and for ourselves.

Today as we continue to rejoice in the resurrection hope we give thanks for Christ being made known to us in the Breaking of the Bread.

St Peter said to the crowd on the Day of Pentecost, “Repent and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2. 38-39)

So let us draw near to God with sincerity and confidence, as we pray together,

Offt God of all mercy, we humbly admit that we need your help. We have wandered from your way. We have sinned in thought, word and deed, and have failed to do what is right. You alone can save us. Have mercy on us, wipe out our sins and teach us to forgive others. Bring forth in us the fruit of your Spirit that we may live the new life to your glory. This we ask in the name of Jesus our Saviour. Amen.

The minister declares God’s forgiveness

God desires that none should perish, but that all should turn to Christ, and live. In response to God’s call we acknowledge our sins. God pardons those who humbly repent, and truly believe the gospel. Therefore we have peace with God, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

The minister says

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His steadfast love endures for ever!

The minister greets the people, who may greet one another.

Grace and peace be with you and also with you.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

6 Prayer in preparation for the reading and teaching of the Scriptures.

Heavenly Father, give us wisdom and understanding. As we listen to your Word, may we know you better, love you more, and learn to please you in all we do; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Psalm 116. 1-4, 11-18

1. I love the Lord, because he heard my voice: the voice of my supplication;

2. Because he inclined his ear to me: in the day that I called to him.

3. The cords of death encompassed me, the snares of the

grave took hold on me: I was in anguish and sorrow.

4. Then I called upon the name of the Lord: ‘O Lord, I beseech you, deliver me !’

8 11. How shall I repay the Lord: for all his benefits to me?

12. I will take up the cup of salvation: and call upon the name of the Lord.

13. I will pay my vows to the Lord:

in the presence of all his people.

14. Grievous in the sight of the Lord: is the death of his faithful ones.

15. O Lord, I am your servant, your servant and the child of your handmaid:

you have unloosed my bonds.

9 16. I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving: and call upon the name of the Lord.

even in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.

A Reading from the First Letter of Peter, chapter 1, beginning at verse 1 [13-25]

Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; for it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.

11 If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God.

12 Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. For ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord endures for ever.’ That word is the good news that was announced to you.

13 The Song of the Church (Te Deum Laudamus)

We praise you, O God: We acclaim you as the Lord.

All creation worships you: the Father everlasting.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven: the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise,

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might: heaven and earth are full of your glory.

14 The glorious company of apostles praise you: The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you: Throughout the world, the holy Church acclaims you, Father of majesty unbounded: your true and only Son, worthy of all praise, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

15 You, Lord Christ, are the King of glory: the eternal Son of the Father. When you took our flesh to set us free: you humbly chose the Virgin's womb.

You overcame the sting of death: and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God's right hand in glory: We believe that you will come to be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood: and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting.

The Te Deum Laudamus ("Thee, O God, we praise") is a Latin Christian hymn written in the late 4th century. Authorship is traditionally ascribed to St. Ambrose (d. 397) or St. Augustine (d. 430), but in truth is considered as being of uncertain authorship.

The hymn follows the outline of the Apostles' Creed, mixing a poetic vision of the heavenly liturgy with its declaration of faith. Calling on the name of God immediately, the hymn proceeds to name all those who praise and venerate God, from the hierarchy of heavenly creatures to those Christian faithful already in heaven to the Church spread throughout the world. The hymn then returns to its credal formula, naming Christ and recalling his birth, suffering and death, his resurrection and glorification.

16 The Gospel According to Luke [24. 13-35]

Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’

17 He asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place.

Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.

18 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’ Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’

Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

19 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’

20 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Song of Zechariah (Benedictus, Luke 1.68-79)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel: who has come to his people and set them free.

The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of his servant David.

Through the holy prophets, God promised of old: to save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us,

To show mercy to our forebears: and to remember his holy covenant.

22 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear: holy and righteous before him, all the days of our life.

And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins.

Offt The Sermon

Offt I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father;

from there he will come to judge

the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF PRAYER

Offt Let us join together in the prayer which Jesus gave us.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

23 Be exalted, Lord, above the heavens, let your glory cover the earth.

Keep our nation under your care, and guide us in justice and truth.

Let your way be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.

Send out your light and your truth, that we may tell of your saving works.

Have mercy on the poor and oppressed. Hear the cry of those in need.

Hear our prayers, O Lord, for we put our trust in you.

24 The Collect of the Day

O God of mystery, out of death you delivered Christ Jesus, and he walked in hidden glory with his disciples. Stir up our faith, that our hearts may burn within us at the sound of his word and our eyes be opened to recognise him in the breaking of the bread.

Grant this through Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead, who lives and reigns with you now and always in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

25 Keep us, good Lord, under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty and distress. Sustain and support the anxious and fearful, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may rejoice in your comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

26 Faithful God, you have promised to here the prayers of all who ask in Jesus’ name. In your mercy, accept our prayers. Give us what we asked in faith, according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE

27 Eternal God and Father, by whose power we are created, and by whose love we are redeemed: Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves to your service, and live this day in love to one another and to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May the Lord make his face to shine upon you,

and be gracious to you.

May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you,

and give you peace. Amen.
